The sirens are a curious bunch. They're shapeshifters, able to shift between a human or an aquatic creature at will. Many of them also have other magical abilities, and all of them draw their power from the sea. They have their own language and culture; they typically stay away from humans, so not much is known about them.

Fortunately, I'm not a human. Most sirens live in small, tight-knit groups that travel and hunt together. These groups have a specific name in the siren language, which is usually translated to "pack". They protect each other, whether it's from humans, sea creatures, or other packs of sirens. They are generally mistrustful of those outside their packs, but not always.

There are also lone sirens who do not live in a pack. There are many reasons for this- their pack may have died or abandoned them, they may have been born outside of one, or they may simply prefer to be alone.

However, certain sirens are less reclusive (to humans, anyways). They may attack ships passing through their territory, or they may live among humans. Either way, these sirens run the risk of being killed or captured by siren hunters.

More about the siren language- there are many, many dialects. Some of them are close enough that they can communicate, and some of them are... not. It usually depends on how far apart they are, but not always.
