Girl in the Glass Box
"Sometimes when I'm writing, I wonder if the words have a mind of their own and if they're really just using me as a puppet to manifest themselves."
― Travis Jeremiah Dahnke, Write like No One is Reading
With a crystalized prism in hand, the doctor smiled as in his mind he knew he could convince Janneth to forego with his plan. In it he enclosed a warning message that read:
In case if this box is ever found, do not (I repeat DO NOT OPEN IT! ) You have been warned!
After all, she was the one who wanted Piper to stop her tantrums and have people believe she was sane.
Nolan made the prism especially for her; to entrap Piper.
He also asked Wilson to mold a special whistle ... similar to one that would attract an animal to come forward. And that was his idea on how to lure Piper inside his trap.
The next day, Nolan made a special appointment with Janneth and Joanne.
He met them at a nearby wharf, a place that wasn't far from the mental institution. And it was here that Piper would soon meet her next fate and release the souls that she entrapped in the wax museum.
The social worker was aloof at first on what was happening, but went ahead with the doctor's plan because she wanted this fiasco done as well.
"Are you ready, doctor? You sure she cannot get out?"
"It's stainless steel and I made sure of it Janneth, as I asked a friend who is a welder to make it. His specialty is creating stained glass windows. And I witnessed it, as he turned the glass around in burning heat. It also comes with a specialized whistle, one that I hope will attract Piper to come aboard. Now Blow!"
With his final instructions, Janneth blew through the whistle's holes and hoped for the best.
A swoosh of whispering wind came after the sound was heard causing the social worker to shriek.
A face of evilness protruded within the air. Immediately, Janneth recognized the figure; the one who didn't want to perish in the flames. And Janneth smirked knowing that now she has won the battle with the doctor's help.
"Piper, do you remember me? I'm going to get rid of you this time. Whether you like it or not. You were never a part of me in the first place!"
As the spirit was lured into the prism, Janneth quickly enclosed it with a glue gun.
Together the doctor and Janneth placed Piper's box in the sea, hoping that it would sink.
Now that Piper was trapped inside the box, she was stuck as her spirit couldn't break through the walls. The spirit was afraid of all the mirrors that captured pictures of her true self. Backwards and forward, behind her and in the front; clearly there was no escape. Moving her head with twists and turns didn't help her either. But now she was able to see how ugly her insides have been.
Looking back at herself was a beauty like the dolls she hid in before. But as she once heard someone say "Beauty is only skin deep"; that thought of hers came back to haunt her. Piper came to a realization that it was herself who somehow got stuck within a curse and it was she who made a deal with the devil.
Her earliest memories came back to her. Her real name was Prue and at sixteen years of age, she worked in a brothel. She was a runaway, an orphan that many did not want. But at least the ladies she stayed with gave her a home and that is all Prue could ever ask for. And a few years after she was found, Prue grew up to be a confident woman. At the age of twenty, she was tremendously a vital person, interested in everybody and everything.
But that is when Prue remembered how this pirate's curse she was stuck in came about.
A dark-haired man in pirate attire came to her bordello looking for a night of relaxation. He wore a scarf over his neck and a curved hat with an emblem where two bones crossed over each other, to signify that he was indeed a captain of a pirate ship.
With a shirt left open below his neck, his brown chest hairs were exposed. Prue remembered touching each one and kissing them as if she had never seen a man's rich body before, and was thrilled to be the woman the captain chose to be with.
Prue was the first to greet the man, hoping she could make love to him. And he introduced himself only with the name of Nathaniel, since he knew this would only be a one night fling. And he chose her as he was captivated by her beauty.
That night was magical, as she let him take her to bed. They fondled each other from dusk till dawn making the other harlots jealous. And when the Captain left, he smiled at her as he paid Prue with gold coins for her service.
Yet, she didn't expect to give birth to his daughter.
After experiencing morning sickness, the women who once abhorred her felt pity on what Prue endured. They sought a witch doctor who came from afar, but since the women didn't have any money, this lady, Esmeralda, was their only choice. They wanted Esmerelda to care for their friend in her time of need, for they didn't know how to take care of a pregnant woman. And this was how the curse begam, secretly through a negotiation.
Once Esmeralda learned about Prue's baby, she sewed some twigs together, made a doll's face out of it and gave it to her. With it, Esmeralda put it under a spell as she was jealous and wanted to be the mother of this baby for she was childless. But since she could not leave her people behind in her village, Prue would live as the doll's evil spirit if her baby was harmed.
When baby Jasmine was kidnapped by her father, Prue's spirit sank his ship once her human form could no longer bear losing her only child. It was a price to get her daughter back and in return for that deed, Esmeralda made Jasmine's doll come to life to cause havoc.
Once they were released from their entombments: Tabitha, Astrid, Hansel, James and even the bully, Serina, ran to their parents' arms once they saw them outside of the wax museum. All were entrapped in Piper's spells. Even a furry little furball was able to be revived out of a canister and wagged her tail.
Janneth informed the families of the missing children to wait outside of that building.
At first, it wasn't easy to convince everyone that the wax museum was where their children lurked, but an old witch named Gretchen offered to help. It was as if she knew about this catastrophe from the start.
Once the children came out, all apologized for running away without their parents' permission. Of course, telling the truth of their whereabouts would only cause further chaos.
The missing townspeople were able to show their faces again. They didn't remember why they were placed in an old building with worn out flooring tiles and brick walls that had paint fading away. But all they knew was that they were thankful for being alive.
And as the family reunions came about, Janneth and her social worker walked towards the crowd.
The children shouted out with glee as they took their teacher by hand.
Meet our teacher, Janneth Hudson. Our hero!
"Is that the end of the story, Miss Hudson?"
The new doctor fidgited in his seat while he waited for Janneth's answer.
"I hope so Dr. Jekyl. I mean it was a great feeling when the kid's called me their hero, but I'm not sure if that's the end of Piper."
Dr. Jekyl shifted his glare to reason with his new client. He was called to see her after the mental institution let her go. The nurse that was promoted to be the head of the institute happened to be Nurse Anne Reynolds. The same school nurse that Piper tried to capture.
Learning about this shocked Miss Hudson. She knew that Anne wasn't someone she could trust from the very beginning.
Two men took her arm, after she ran from the madhouse and took her to the office of a Mr. Jekyl.
