Chapter Ten
The house is cramped with seven monsters and one bitty gathered in the kitchen. Horror, Dust, and Killer have tucked themselves against one wall near the exit back to the living room. Cross is on the other side of the exit and leaning against a counter as he stands. By habit, the Bad Sanses want to make sure that they have a clear escape path. Nightmare is standing awkwardly between his boys. The Negative Guardian's tendrils hang low in shame. Dream and Blue are feeling a bit hemmed in by the others' positions. However, neither of them are willing to move away from the counter behind them. Pinto is lying on a cushion. He is dressed, but still unresponsive.
"So you say that Fate's strings are gone, but Pinto didn't do it. How are you free?" Dream asks his brother suspiciously.
Nightmare glances at Pinto before tilting his head to the side. "You can come out now." There is a moment of stillness before something climbs its way out of Nightmare's hood. Blue and Dream are shocked to see a second bitty appear on Nightmare's shoulder. He looks very different from Pinto. This bitty has ashy black bones. His clothes are more practical with a dark blue outer coat and matching boots. Strangely, this bitty has a large battery pack strapped to his back.
"This is Pixel," Nightmare explains, "Error sent him." The Negative Guardian holds up a hand, and Pixel climbs on without any reservations.
"But if Pixel broke Fate's stings, then Error must have....." Blue trails off.
"You can just check me," Pixel offers shyly. He seems a lot less outgoing than Pinto. It is difficult for Pixel to hold eye contact with anyone for longer than a moment. With Pixel's permission, Dream goes ahead and checks the bitty.
Corrupted! Bitty
Name: Pixel
HP: 15/15
DEF: 3
ATK: 62
MP: 112/Error(storage full)
- God of Destruction
- A soulless being with an artificial body
- He wants to make Error proud
Pixel' stats are noticeably higher than Pinto's even though they are supposed to be counterparts. Error made him that way. Unlike Pinto, Pixel was told about everything that would be expected of him if he accepted Errors title. The Ex God of Destruction dragged the bitty into the Antivoid. Once Pixel accepted, Error tampered with the bitty's codes to make him more suited to the abilities of god's. Pixel's stats are still a far cry from Error's normal ones. Error could only do so much without making Pixel's tiny body explode.
"You're soulless like Pinto is?" Dream asks quietly. It is usually a sensitive topic for such individuals.
"I wasn't always soulless. Error put my soul in this battery that I carry. Fate can't touch me like this," Pixel explains. He is much more well-spoken than Pinto. The idea of being separated from his soul does make Pixel nervous, but he completely understands why Error did it.
"Did you remove Error strings?" Blue asks. "Is he still in the Antivoid?"
"He's still there. I'm not strong enough to break those strings," Pixel answers. His attention turns to the counter behind Dream and Blue. "Can I sit with Pinto?"
Bitties are very social creatures that get along well with each other. Error tried to change as little as possible when it comes to Pixel's characteristics. His shyness is a remnant of that. Pixel still feels the need to comfort other bitties. He doesn't like seeing Pinto hurt. Pixel was there when Nightmare broke nearly all of Pinto's bones with one squeeze. It was so scary to witness that Pixel nearly lost his chance to strike.
Dream thinks that it is cute that Pixel wants to be near Pinto. The Positive Guardian is a bit nervous approaching his brother, but Nightmare amicably holds out his hand so that Pixel can go with Dream. Pixel is set back down on the same cushion as the other bitty. Pinto still does not stir despite the new presence sitting so close to him.
"Dream, I didn't mean for this to happen. I didn't mean for Ink....." Nightmare trails off, leaving the rest of that dreadful sentence left unsaid. "I was going to sign the peace treaty. I want to try again."
"Do you really mean that?" Dream asks with a fragile hope.
"I do."
While the monsters talk, Pixel crawls closer to Pinto. Pixel sits down next to the other bitty and pulls Pinto into his lap. Pixel wouldn't be able to tell someone why he did it. Only another bitty would understand. Pixel hugs Pinto to his chest watches the other monsters. Pixel thinks that it is interesting how easily their small presence is ignored. The others don't mean to be rude. Bitties are often treated like small pets; easily forgotten when something more important is happening. Pixel didn't notice these types of things back in his own AU. Error's tampering has made Pixel much more aware.
Movement draws the God of Destruction's attention back to the other bitty in his arms. Pinto is waking up! He wines quietly. His body aches all over. When Pinto opens his eyes, they are plain white. He doesn't look confused or surprised to see an unfamiliar bitty staring down at him. Pinto's face is flat and expressionless.
"Are you okay?" Pixel asks. Pinto doesn't respond. He curls up closer to Pixel, seeking comfort even without emotions.
Blue had been periodically glancing at the two bitties. He is the first to notice that Pinto is awake. "Pinto! How are you feeling?" Blue bends down to put himself at eye level with the bitties. Pinto briefly looks up after hearing his name, but he quickly buries his face back against Pixel's shoulder.
"What's wrong?" Dream asks when he sees the odd reaction.
"He doesn't have his paint vial," Pixel points out, "Do you have it?"
Nightmare winces. "Definitely broken."
"I have some," Blue says unexpectedly. "Ink kept an extra sash here in my home for emergencies." One of things that Ink hated the most was other people seeing him in an emotionless state. After catching a glimpse of it, many people treated him differently. Ink successfully kept Blue from ever seeing him that way. The Ex-God of Creation wasn't so lucky with Dream. Ink was always grateful that his best friend did not shy away after that.
Blue is quick to shuffle through one of the kitchen cabinets. From the back, he pulls out a replica of Ink's sash. Each of the vials are only partially full. Blue is easily able to mix the colors into one vial. He starts with the yellow one and pours small amounts of the other colors onto it. When he is done, he holds it out to Pinto.
Pinto hesitates to take it, but eventually pulls away long enough from Pixel to grab the vial. Pinto remembers what he is supposed to do with it and takes a drink. Everyone in the room is watching his reaction. Pinto blinks a few times. His eyelights shift to a yellow star and green diamond. He looks around the room with a hesitant smile.
"Did we win?" Pinto asks excitedly. Everyone is standing in the same room without trying to hit each other. That must be good.
"Yeah, we won," Pixel says quietly, shyer now that the other bitty is more aware.
It is only now that Pinto bothers to really look at who he's been clinging too. "Oh! You're like me!" Pinto gasps with a huge grin. "Who are you?"
Pixel can't help but return a small smile. Pinto's excitement is contagious. "I'm Pixel. The new God of Destruction." This moment is a bit surreal. Pixel was told that the old gods of Creation and Destruction loathed each other. Pixel sees it a bit differently. He can't see himself being mad at Pinto. This is supposed to be his counter part; a partner in this big wide world they've both bee thrust into.
"Like me!" Pinto repeats again. He crushes Pixel in a big hug. Pinto is so excited to have a new friend that is just like him. He looks around the room again. "Error? Is Error here?"
"No. Error is still stuck in the Antivoid. I'm not strong enough to break Fate's strings on him," Pixel explains.
Pinto grabs one of Pixel's hands. "Together?" the God of Creations asks. Pixel's eyes widen. Why didn't he think of that?
Everyone in the room has been listening on on the conversation. Nightmare sends his brother a speculative look. "Do you think that would work? Error could be free, too?" Error is not one of Nightmare's boys, but he is a trusted friend. Nightmare hates the idea of letting Error rot in the Antivoid. The Negative Guardian is even more worried about Error getting out while under Fate's control even if he no longer holds the god title.
"I don't know," Dream admits. "Ink and Error never worked together. I don't know if their magic can combine. They could repel one another instead."
"There's only one way to find out," Pixel says with a spark of determination. He stands up and pulls Pinto with him. "I can get us into the Antivoid."
"Let's go!" Pinto says eagerly. He still has one more monster to save.
Still holding hands, Pixel calls on his new magic. His form begins to glitch and distort. The scattering of pixels crawls across their joined hands and quickly envelope Pinto. The two bitties glitch out of time and space before any of the other monsters can offer help.
Error stopped watching after he was sure Nightmare was safe and Pinto wasn't going to dust. Error is tired. He doesn't want to fight anymore. Now...... he's not sure what happens now. Without his god title, Error can't leave the Antivoid even if he wanted to. Error is standing under his vast web of souls. If he squints hard enough, they look kinda like stars. What Error was not expecting was to be suddenly assaulted by Fate's demands without any time to brace himself.
Pixel and Pinto arrive in time to see the ex God of Destruction scream and drop to his knees, scratching bloody furrows into his own skull. Error's body glitches horrendously. He can't see a damn thing. Error screams again as Fate's voice gets louder, desperately clawing at the glitch's mind while the connection lasts. Error falls down to his elbows as he clutches his head in pain.
Pinto and Pixel are desperate to help. Their quick footsteps are so light that Error doesn't hear them approach. Error is so lost in his madness that he still doesn't notice them even as the two come up to his right shoulder. Pinto takes Pixel's hand again as they duck underneath Error's upper arm. The two of them grab the same string and pull.
Breaking Fate's strings has always been easy, but this one resists. The two bitties tug on it repeatedly with all the strength in their small bodies. It is only when they yank at the same time that something finally starts to give. Pinto and Pixel pull back with all their might and suddenly drop backwards when it breaks
The wailing voices in Error's head cease immediately. His glitching settles some, but much of it remains from the after affects of stress. Error raises his head and looks down at the two bitties in amazement. Error has never felt so light. He is free.
Fate is still out there, and Multiverse isn't perfect, but its two new protectors are eager to look after their world and new friends.
