[30] Back In School

"(Y/n) wake up!! You're gonna go to school today!!"

Your eyes flutter open as you heard your mom yell from across the hallway. You groan, literally rolling off your bed. You felt yourself hit the floor. Never again binge watch TV shows a night before school.

It was Wednesday. Outside your apartment, you heard the usual traffic noises from the streets. The sun was starting to peek it's way through the clouds, making the dawn sky colorful and aesthetically pleasing.

"(y/n)!!!" Your mom calls out again. With a huff, you put your arms under yourself and push yourself up in a push up position. You shake your head to further wake you up. Then you actually stood on your feet, shuffling your way to your bathroom, adding in a yawn on the way there.

You turned on the lights and looked at the mess you called your hair in the reflection of the mirror. You went on with your morning routine.

*time skip*

'What are people gonna think? No, they don't know! I'll just say I had strep throat or something! No one can know...'

You turned the last corner on your way to school. Your mind was flooding with thoughts.

'What about Peter? It's probably gonna be hella awkward...'

Making your way into the school, no one looked at you differently so that was a relief. You kept your head low as you made your way to your locker. Of course, Peter was at his locker, always before you.

Not saying anything, you open your locker and silently exchanged your books. You saw Peter take a glance at you, but you didn't return the look. Closing your locker, you began to head in the direction Peter was in, planning to pass him. As you slung your bag over your shoulder, you feel a tight hand on your free wrist.

You were pulled to a halt and you just knew who that hand belonged two without even looking back. You knew that grip too well to even second guess and that alone makes your stomach turn.

"Please don't ignore me." You hear Peter's quiet and uneasy voice in your ear. You move your eyes to the other side. Gulping, you contained yourself.

"You can't tell me what to do, Peter." You replied more sternly than you intended. You yanked your wrist back, feeling Peter's fingers slip against your skin. You didn't turn back, but continued on your way to English class. Then the tears came back, but you dared not to let them go.

*time skip to lunch*

Lunch was even harder than the morning. Instead of sitting next to Peter, you switched your spot with Ned. You got at the table there first, so when Ned saw you, he looked at you, but didn't question it. You really wished you didn't have to sit with Peter at the table, but where else would you sit? Alone? No..

At first, there was an uncomfortable silence between you four. Michelle was at her usual, reading her book and minding her own business. You, Peter, and Ned were eating your lunch a bit awkwardly.

'Oh my god this is s fucking awkward... maybe I can hide in the bathroom until the period ends..'

In the midst of picking your food, you heard Ned say something to Peter. They exchanged words that you didn't even care to know what they were, until Peter started laughing.

That brought your eyes up to him. You saw him laugh that contagious laugh, but this time it didn't make you smile. It did make the corner of your mouth twitch up a little, though.

You secretly watched as Peter's eyes closed tightly, his nose scrunch up, and his big smile spread across his face. On the inside you miss that laugh. That joyful sound you two shared was slowly haunting you. Now you wished things were like before.

Peter's laugh dialed down, and that gave you a signal to move your eyes away. You did so, going back to your food.

'I'm not hungry.'

Grabbing your lunch tray, you get up and walk over to the trash. You tilt the tray letting everything that you paid for fall down in the garbage bag. Putting the tray back to its place by the counter, you made your way back to your seat. It was a short and awkward walk back to the table.

Taking your seat, you noticed that Peter was looking at you. Giving a quick glance, you saw his eyes, now calm, looking at you like he always did. You took back your gaze to the table not wanting to look anymore.

*time skip to chemistry class*

"So when forming organic compounds..." The teacher droned on. Your eyes were falling heavy, not because of the lesson, but because you stupidly only got 3 hours of sleep. Your head was resting on your hand as you tried to fight sleep.

You shut your eyes tightly for a moment to hopefully stir awake. Then you sat back a little on your stool since science class doesn't have individual desks.

"Peter!" You hear Mr. Arrow. You furrow your brows and look across the room at the brunette boy. Peter's eyes open in surprise and he almost falls backwards in his stool. This causes the class to let out a chuckle, and it even made you smile a little.

"Are you with us?" Mr. Arrow puts his back on the smart board and faces Peter. Sitting up, Peter puts an arm on the table and nods. You slyly get a look at him and suddenly you remember those times Peter would fall asleep in class.

For the hell of it, even if you were seated next to each other, you wouldn't wake him up. Instead, you'd let the teacher find out and get Peter yelled at. It was a small thing between you two. Peter did the same thing to you a couple times, but those were just rarities because you would never really fall asleep. Peter, on the other hand, almost always falls asleep.

*time skip to the end of the day*

'And it's gonna be awkward again at the lockers."

You were in a better mood once the last bell rang. Maybe it was because you can go home now. You went to your locker and Peter wasn't at his locker yet. You then tried to be your quickest and change your books. But once you opened your locker, Peter already made his way next to yours.

'Dammit'

Putting the last book in the locker, Peter decided to say something to you.

"I saw you laughing at me in chem." A small grin comes across his face. You then feel yourself starting to smile, but you bit your cheek to hold it down. "Mmhmm." You nodded shortly having a bit of trouble zipping up your bag.

"Can I walk you home?" Peter then asked after a moment. By then, you closed your locker. You looked up at Peter with soft eyes. He looked at you with hope. Gazing your eyes down, you nodded.

Peter shut his locker and began walking, you following next to him.

Now it really was like old times. You two walking out, him walking you home, and both of you just... talking.

You two didn't exchange much words on your way to your apartment. Most of the trip was like "Did you take that math test?" "Yeah." "Was it hard?" "A little."

That was probably the only real conversation you had with Peter since Friday. God, it's been a hot minute.

Feeling the light breeze of the New York streets, and hearing the typical traffic sounds, you felt calm for once. You didn't feel anxious or stressed. And the fact that Peter was next to you, in a strange way, you felt safe.

You saw your apartment coming up, and you quickly thanked Peter, but before you could make it up the steps, you felt a soft hand on your hand. You turned to Peter questioningly.

"(Y/n) you know I love you and I would do anything for you to forgive me, but.." He trailed. You turned your body to Peter, giving a small squeeze on his hand.

"I just want you to know that seeing you at school makes me happy. Even if you don't talk to me, knowing the fact that you're okay makes me feel better. These past days have been torture without you and it's okay if you want to break up with me. I know what I'm doing is so stupid," Peter's eyes started to become glossy. Your mouth opened a little in awe.

"B-but if you don't want to be with–" "Peter, no." Now you let a tear slip. You tugged at his hand as Peter's eyes made its way to yours.

"I love you too.." You waited for a second. "But I just need time to think. Everything is just," You took a breath, "Everything is just happening to me so fast I don't know how to handle it." Then you didn't know what else to say.

Peter nodded as he tightly held your hand. "I know." He whispered as you saw a tear roll down his cheek. "Please don't cry." You sighed taking your thumb and wiping away that tear. "You make me happy, too, and I don't want to see you cry." You managed to pull out a sappy grin.

"I gotta go, but I'll see you soon, okay?" You moved your hand for Peter to let go. He hesitantly let his fingers slip and he wiped his face a little as he watched you go up to your door and unlock it.

Like he always did.
