V: The Fundamentals of Teamwork.
chapter five.
( the fundamentals of teamwork. )
"Recognised: Robin, B-Zero-One. Kid Flash, B-Zero-Four."
Yue turns toward the zeta-tube, her lips curling into a smile as she watches Dick and Wally run towards the group; rather than wear their supersuits, the duo were – just like the rest of their new team – dressed in civilian attire.
"Did you ask him?" Dick asks excitedly, his eyes flickering between Yue and Kaldur.
While Dick took a pitstop in Central City to retrieve Wally – who had a habit of sleeping in on important days such as today – Yue arrived at the cave bright and early that morning, more than ready to get a headstart on whatever their first mission assignment would be.
It had been just over two weeks since Batman formed the covert operations team. It had to be time for a real mission. They deserved a real mission.
Yue softly nudges Wally's arm with her elbow. "What did Speedy say last night?" She whispers over to him. "Is he going to join the team?"
She had been caught up with a Gotham Academy soccer-team meeting in preparation for the upcoming school term last night, unable to tag along with the others as they paid Roy Harper a visit in Star City. She had been fast asleep by the time Dick returned to the Manor.
"He said no," Wally starts, a sigh following in pursuit. "Actually, he said no and called us the junior justice league." He corrects.
"The junior justice- Why do we want him on our team again?" Yue frowns and crosses her arms over her sweater in frustration. The insult cut deeper than she'd like to admit, especially coming from somebody she had considered a friend. "He's always been a pain in our asses, anyway."
"He's arriving now." Kaldur directs their attention to the holoscreen, where he, Yue and Miss Martian had been eagerly watching Red Tornado's movements on a map as he travelled toward Mount Justice.
"Then what are we waiting for?" Wally grins. As always, he's about five steps ahead of the others, already dashing in the direction of the cave's entrance.
"Hey, wait up!" Yue calls out to the boy as she and the rest of the team follow him outside to confront their assigned den-mother.
Wally waves his hand high-above his head as the robot lowers himself onto the grass. "Red Tornado!"
"Greetings." Red Tornado glances down at him, then looks over to the rest of the team standing behind him. They all had eager and hopeful expressions painted across their faces. "Is there a reason you intercept me outside the cave?"
"We hoped you had a mission for us," Kaldur informs the robot politely.
Red Tornado blankly stares at them, "Mission assignments are The Batman's responsibility."
"Right," Yue lets out a frustrated huff, blowing a stray strand of her hair out of her face. After the Cadmus mission – after their failed secret mission to save Selena – Batman still hasn't kept his promise of assigning the Team missions. Whenever she or Dick bring it up at the manor, he would just shoot them down.
It's safe to say she, and the rest of the team, are growing weary of waiting.
"It's been two weeks, and nothing-"
Red Tornado holds his hand up to silence Dick. "You'll be tested soon enough." He informs them. "For the time being, simply enjoy each other's company."
Yue's dark eyes narrow in Red Tornado's direction, her hands falling to rest on her hips. She already saw enough of Dick and Wally, any more time getting to know them was going to drive her crazy.
She needed a mission.
A real mission.
"This team is not a social club." Kaldur says.
"No," Red Tornado agrees with a nod of his head. "But I am told social interaction is an important team-building exercise. Perhaps you can keep busy by familiarising yourself with the cave." He doesn't give them a chance to ask any more questions as he hovers into the cave and leaves them outside to ponder his suggestions.
Wally knocks his shoulder against Yue's, watching as the girl turns to face him with furrowed brows. "Keep busy," he repeats Red Tornado's words mockingly.
Dick rolls his eyes, "Does he think we're falling for this?"
Miss Martian's face lights up, her lips curling upward. "Oh! I'll find out!" Her eyes begin to glow, but within a matter of seconds they return to their natural amber colour and she huffs out a loud sigh. "I'm sorry. I forgot he's a machine. Inorganic. I... cannot read his mind."
"Nice try, though," Wally smiles reassuringly, stepping forward to stand beside the Martian. "So, uh, you know what I'm thinkin' right now?"
"We all know what you're thinking now," Dick scoffs and elbows his friend in the side. Wally lets out a quiet yelp.
"This is annoying." Yue mutters. She stares across at Wally, her brows pinching together as she watches the boy continue to flirt with Miss Martian.
Kaldur, who stands next to her with his arms crossed, nods with a frown. Assuming she was speaking about the situation with Red Tornado, he speaks up, "And now we tour the clubhouse."
"Well, Superboy and I live here." Miss Martian turns to glance at the eldest of their team, her hands clasping together excitedly. "We can play tour guides."
Yue's eyes flicker over to Superboy. Due to his silence, she almost forgot he was outside with them. Almost. It was quite hard to forget him when his brooding spoke louder than words ever could.
Superboy shakes his head when he feels the eyes of the entire team on him, "Don't look at me."
"We won't." Wally waves him off dismissively and turns back to Miss Martian with a smirk. "A private tour sounds much more fun."
"She never said private!" Yue points out, about to walk forward to step in between the two of her teammates. Before she gets the chance to, Kaldur's hand shoots out to rest on her shoulder.
"Team building." He states calmly, the feeling of his hand on her shoulder almost enough to make Yue forget the ache in her chest. "We'll all go."
"Fine." Yue grumbles and knocks his hand away.
"The cave is actually the entire mountain." Miss Martian explains as she leads the team back into the main room of their base of operations. She had hovered for most of the tour, but now she lowers herself to the ground and turns back to face the team with a grin.
"It was reinforced by Superman and Green Lantern in the early days of the League," Wally comments, his emerald eyes scanning over the hollowed out cave system they stand in.
Superboy raises a brow, "Then why abandon it for the Hall of Justice?"
"The Cave's secret location was compromised," Kaldur answers.
"So they traded it in for a tourist trap?" He rolls his eyes in distaste. "Yeah. That makes sense."
His question reminds Yue of the day they found him. When Roy informed the team that the Hall of Justice was only a front for the League's true headquarters; an orbiting satellite none of them had been given permission to step foot on. The more she thought about it, the more she realised just how dumb they were to believe in the Hall.
Of course the Justice League has a secret base of operations in space. It's The Justice League, after all.
Miss Martian gasps, "If villains know of the Cave, we must be on constant alert!"
Dick shakes his head, then reaches out to softly hold her hand in his own. "The bad guys know we know they know about the place, so they'd never think to look here," he attempts to explain to her.
Wally glares at his friend, gently knocking him away from the Martian while Dick smirks triumphantly back at him.
Ignoring their bickering, Yue smiles over to Miss Martian. "In easier terms, they won't attack the same place twice. We're hiding in plain sight."
"Ah," she nods. "That's much clearer. Thank you, Flamebird."
Superboy looks around cautiously, sniffing the air before grimacing. "I smell smoke."
It takes a second before Miss Martian's eyes widen, a gasp falling from her parted lips as her feet lift off the ground. "My cookies!" She takes off in the direction of the kitchen. Yue and the boys follow quickly after her, and arrive just as Miss Martian drops a tray of burnt cookies onto the counter.
Stepping closer to the counter, Yue grimaces as the cookies sizzle against the baking paper.
"I was trying out Granny Jones' recipe from episode 17 of-" Miss Martian laughs sheepishly, "Never mind..."
"You can try it again some other time," Yue suggests, reaching over to gently place her hand on her shoulder. "I can even help! I'm not the best at cooking, but-"
"Not the best?" Wally laughs as he plucks a burnt cookie out of the pan, "You're like the worst chef, Yue." His words have her head whipping around, her dark eyes narrowing into a glare.
"I bet they'd have tasted great, Miss M." Dick speaks up, then glances over to Wally as he shoves almost an entire cookie into his mouth, "He doesn't seem to mind."
Wally shrugs. "I have a serious metabolism," he replies, his voice muffled by the food in his mouth.
Miss Martian's brows furrow, "I'll make more?"
"It was sweet of you to make any." Kaldur smiles.
Her gaze softens as she glances in Kaldur's direction, smiling brightly at his reassurance. "Thanks, Aqualad."
"We're off duty, call me Kaldur'ahm." He corrects himself, "Actually, my friends call me Kaldur."
"Oh! I'm Yue," she grins at the Martian, her dark eyes flickering between her and Dick as the boy raises a brow at her lack of hesitation to reveal her identity. She simply shrugs her shoulders in response to his questioning gaze.
"And I'm Wally." The Speedster chimes in, leaning over the counter and resting his chin in the palm of his hand as he smirks. "See? I already trust you with my secret I.D.. Unlike Mr. Dark glasses over here." Wally points toward Dick; as usual when in civilian clothes around other heroes, he wears his sunglasses instead of the domino mask. "Batman's forbidden Boy Wonder from telling anyone his real name."
Miss Martian nods, tapping her chin in thought. "But not Yue?"
"It's part of my charm." She jokes. "Bats can't say no to me, but he says it to Robin all the time." Yue couldn't see his eyes behind those dark shades, but she was sure Dick was glaring at both her and Wally.
"Mine's no secret, it's M'gann M'orzz," Miss Martian introduces herself happily. "But, you can call me Megan. It's an Earth name, and I'm on Earth now."
"Megan?" Wally repeats. "That's cu- Hey!" He huffs when Yue's elbow comes into contact with his forearm.
"Oh, my arm slipped," she plays it off with a shrug of her shoulders. "Whoops."
"Slipped on what? The air?"
"Maybe it did."
While Yue and Wally bicker, Superboy tucks his hands into the pockets of his jacket and wanders away from where the rest of the group stands in the kitchen.
As he reaches the entrance, his head whips in M'gann's direction. His eyes narrow into a glare, "Get out of my head!" He growls.
His shout causes both Yue and Wally to fall silent, the two of them sharing a look before they – as well as Kaldur and Dick – face M'gann in confusion. "What's wrong?" M'gann's voice echoes in Yue's head, a loud and rather unwelcome intrusion that causes a small headache to form. "I don't understand, everyone on Mars communicates telepathically."
"M'gann, stop." Kaldur orders as calmly as possible. "Things are different on Earth. Here, your powers are an extreme invasion of privacy."
"Besides, Cadmus' creepy little psychic genomes left a bad taste in his brain," Wally partially covers his mouth with one hand, as if his weak attempt would make it suddenly impossible for the boy beside him to hear what he was saying.
"I-" M'gann frowns as her amber eyes flicker from Kaldur to Superboy. "I didn't mean to-"
Superboy cuts her off, "Just stay out."
Yue silently watches as Superboy storms out of the kitchen area to make his way over to the small couches across from a TV screen. Turning back to M'gann, she smiles softly. "It's okay, you didn't know," she reassures the girl. "Besides, you'll figure out Earth's customs in no time. It's not like the League is giving us anything else to do..."
"Hello, Megan!" M'gann presses her palm against her forehead as she exclaims loudly, though her words only create more confusion amongst her teammates. "I know what we can do!" She takes off from the kitchen.
Yue leans closer to Wally, "What do you think that whole "Hello, Megan" thing is about?"
He shrugs his shoulders, not questioning M'gann's odd choice of words as he follows her out of the room. Yue frowns at his lack of reaction, he'd usually crack a joke in light of something like that. Especially if it were her or Dick.
What was so different about M'gann?
She folds her arms over her chest and strolls forward to follow after M'gann and the boys, freezing by the doorway as her eyes fall onto Superboy. He was still sitting in the small living area with a scowl; Yue was beginning to wonder if it was a permanent fixture on his face, she'd certainly be surprised to see literally any other expression.
"You coming, Supes?" She asks.
Superboy turns his nose up at the question, utterly silent while Yue's gaze remains focused on him. With a sigh, she rolls her eyes and heads out the door.
If he wanted to sit around and sulk all day, she wasn't going to make it her job to stop him.
Joining others in front of the elevator, Yue raises a brow as M'gann passes by her, floating back towards the living area with a bright grin. "I'll be right back!" She calls back to them as she disappears around the corner.
The second she was gone, the smile fell from Dick's face. He heaves out a heavy sigh, "You don't think Roy was right about this, do you?" His eyes flicker between the trio standing at his side.
"What? The Junior Justice League?" Yue questions as she tucks her hands into the pockets of her jacket. When Dick nods his head, she finds herself rolling her eyes, "Of course he isn't. We'll get a mission any day now."
Slinging his arm around Yue's shoulders, Wally chimes in with his typical grin, "And if birdy's wrong, we can just poach missions off Roy."
"I do not think "poaching missions" off Roy will help this team." Kaldur comments. "Red Tornado is right about one thing; familiarising ourselves with our base of operations is an important team-building exercise."
His words, though correct, do nothing but bring a frown to their faces.
"We're back!" M'gann's cheerful voice echoes through the hallway as she makes her way toward the elevator with Superboy following slowly behind.
Wally's arm drops from Yue's shoulders the second his eyes meet M'gann's.
With a frown tugging at her lips, Yue hits the button for the elevator and steps inside with the rest of the team. "Where are we heading, anyways?" She asks, watching carefully as M'gann presses the button for the hangar.
"You'll see when we get there." M'gann speaks excitedly, clasping her hands together in front of her. Just a few seconds later, the elevator doors re-open and M'gann turns around to face the team, "It's my Martian Bio-Ship!"
Yue stares at the red and black pod-shaped object behind M'gann, and her brows furrow as she strolls out of the elevator for a better look. For some reason, she was expecting so much more from an alien ship.
"Cute," Wally rests his hands on his hips as he grins, "Not aerodynamic. But cute."
"It's at rest, silly." M'gann laughs, "I'll wake it." She extends her hand in the bio-ship's direction, ever-so-slowly it begins to morph from its pod-like shape into a larger ship.
Yue's eyes widen in awe as the ship, following the movements of M'gann's hand, turns itself around and opens to let them inside. "That is so cool!" She grins, not hesitating for even a moment before rushing up the ramp and into the bio-ship's cockpit.
M'gann giggles at her enthusiasm and turns to face the rest of the team. "You coming?"
The team comes to a stop in the cockpit as six seats morph from the flooring; three seats line the front of the cockpit, with two others slightly off to the side behind them, and a pilot's seat on a landing-pad in the middle.
"Strap in for launch." At M'gann's order, Yue rushes to take a seat at the front with Kaldur and Superboy, while Dick and Wally sit behind them on either side of M'gann. Straps emerge from the seats, winding themselves around the teens much like seat-belts.
"Red Tornado, please open the bay door," M'gann speaks up. The metal doors ahead of the ship slowly begin to part and the martian summons two steering mechanisms from the floor. Placing both of her hands on it, the bio-ship shoots out of the cave and up into the blue sky of Happy Harbour.
"Incredible," Dick murmurs in awe.
Yue leans forward in her seat for a better look out of the window in front of her. Truthfully, it wasn't anything different than the bat-plane, and yet it gave her a whole new feeling of excitement.
"She sure is," Wally sighs dreamily, and it has Yue's shoulders stiffening. Any ounce of excitement she feels suddenly drains from her body; if the rest of his actions today were anything to go off, she didn't need to turn around to know Wally would be staring at their new teammate.
"I- I mean the ship! Which, like all ships, is a she!" He back-tracks, crossing his arms and sinking in his seat when M'gann glances over at him.
"Fast with his feet, not so much with his mouth," Dick laughs at his friend's expense.
"Dude!"
Yue attempts to tune out of the conversations, both the one behind her – the bickering of Dick and Wally while M'gann shyly laughs it off – and the one beside her, between Kaldur and Superboy. At least until Dick's voice grows loud enough to capture the attention of everyone within the cockpit. "How about showing us a little Martian shape-shifting?"
Yue turns her seat around to face M'gann as the girl stands up from the pilot seat and shape-shifts into a familiar form. Robin. Though Yue could spot quite a few key-differences between her brother and the Martian-Version of him; not only was M'gann still a few inches taller than Dick, but her version of Robin still had breasts.
Turning around, the next form she takes is Kid Flash, and she flexes her arms as Wally watches in awe. "Is it wrong that I think I'm hot?" He wonders.
Yue scoffs and crosses her arms, "Obviously."
"Impressive," Dick claps his hands together as M'gann returns to her normal form. "But you know you're not exactly going to fool anyone with those." He motions to his own chest.
M'gann averts her gaze, "Mimicking boys is a lot harder."
Before she knew it, it wasn't M'gann standing in front of her, but Yue herself– fit head to toe in the reds and golds of her Flamebird attire. Unlike M'gann's attempts at mimicking Dick and Wally, Yue could barely spot the differences in the Martian's attempt to shapeshift into her. From the parting in her bangs to the mole under her eye, it was almost scary how accurate her portrayal was.
With a sheepish smile, M'gann returns to her green-skinned and red-haired figure and takes a seat.
"And your clothes?" Kaldur asks.
"They're organic, like the ship," she explains. "They respond to my mental commands."
Superboy, who had been watching in awe, turns back around in his seat and mutters under his breath, "As long as they're the only ones."
M'gann's face falls at his words, but Wally – ever the hero – jumps in to distract her. "Can you do that ghosting through walls thing that Manhunter does?"
"Density shifting?" She glances over at him, then shakes her head. "No... It's- It's a very advanced technique."
Dick grins. "Flash can vibrate his molecules right through a wall-" Wally's eyes widen in realisation as Dick lets out a laugh and continues, "When he tries it, bloody-nose."
Wally's emerald eyes narrow in his friend's direction. "Dude!"
Yue snickers at her brother's statement. She knew it was wrong, she knew the story embarrassed Wally more than anything, but part of her couldn't help but laugh. With the way Wally's been acting since he saw M'gann at the cave, he truly needed a little humbling every now and then.
"Here's something I can do." The outside of the ship slowly disappears as the fly over the nearby town, "Camouflage mode."
Yue is barely given the chance to find the excitement in it, when Red Tornado's voice echoes from the bio-ships communication system. "Miss Martian. An emergency alert has been triggered at the Happy Harbour power plant." He explains. "I suggest you investigate. Covertly. I'm sending coordinates."
"Coordinates received. Adjusting course."
With a roll of his eyes, Dick looks out the window on his right. "Tornado's keeping us busy again."
"Well, a simple fire led you to Superboy." M'gann happily reminds them all as the bio-ship flies toward the power plant. "We should find out what caused the alert."
"Uh, I think I know the cause." Superboy points out the window, drawing their attention to a tornado heading straight for them. With perfect timing, the tornado surrounds them, preventing the bio-ship from escaping.
Yue grunts as the ship is vigorously shaken back and forth by the strength of the winds. "We need- M'gann, we need to get out of here!"
M'gann's hands shoot out toward the steering mechanisms, her grip on each of them tightening as she manoeuvres the bio-ship out and away from the strong tornado. She safely lands the ship near the power plant's main-building, and one by one the team drops down into the parking lot.
"Robin, are tornadoes common in New England?" Kaldur wonders, glancing behind him at where Dick was standing just seconds prior. "Robin?!" A childish laugh echoes through the area.
"He was just here!" M'gann's eyes widen as she looks around worriedly.
Yue lets out a sigh and slips the red domino mask over her face – she always keeps one in her pocket; revealing her identity to teammates was one thing, but Bruce Wayne's ward could never actually be seen fighting super-villains. "He always does, you get used to it after awhile."
She takes a quick look around, mentally taking notes of the scene around them. Power plant workers are pouring out of the building, screaming as they run away from the site. The second floor catches her eye in particular, the windows exploding from violent gusts of air.
Robin must've seen it, too.
"Up there!" She points out to the team. "Let's go!"
Aqualad's the first to rush into the building, with the rest of the team following closely behind, arriving just in time to see Robin being thrown back into one of the stone pillars.
Superboy jumps over the railing, dropping down to Robin's side with a raised brow as the boy picks himself up off the ground. "Who's your new friend?"
"Didn't catch his name but he plays kinda rough!" Robin groans.
Wind swirls beneath the feet of the heavily-armoured villain. "My apologies." He speaks up. "You may address me as Mister Twister."
Yue grimaces as Superboy, who had been charging towards Mister Twister, is suddenly thrown back against the wall by a small tornado. Kid Flash slips his goggles over his face, and the five teammates share a look before they each take off towards the super-villain.
Faster than the rest of them, Kid Flash speeds forward. He presses his hands against a knocked-over barrel, using the object and his momentum to twist his body around and kick the man in the chest.
Mister Twister is even quicker to react, he reaches his hand out to form another twister and flings Kid Flash out of the open window and into the parking lot outside.
Miss Martian and Aqualad are the next to rush in. He aims for the middle while she attacks from above. But, like those before them, Mister Twister easily knocks them away with large gusts of wind.
Yue ducks as Miss Martian is tossed in her direction, she glances over at Dick, who stares back with a mutual look of concern and confusion behind his sunglasses.
"I was prepared to be challenged by a superhero." Mister Twister faces Robin and Yue. She remains crouched behind Robin's shorter stature, slinging her utility belt over her shoulder and around her chest. "I was not, however, expecting children."
"We're not children!" Robin shouts. Yue pushes herself up, tossing an explosive device toward the robot. As expected, he summons twisters to push it away; and as it explodes mid-air, he's left vulnerable to Robin's two bird-a-rangs that lodge themselves in his chest.
"Objectively, you are." He barely spares the bird-a-rangs a second glance, flicking them away with the tip of his finger before they have the chance to explode. "Have you no adult supervision? I find your presence here quite disturbing."
The team rises to their feet, joining Yue and Robin in the centre of the room. "Well we hate to see you disturbed!" Robin calls out. "Let's see if you're more 'turbed once we kick your can!"
M'gann extends her hands to bring down the vent that hangs above the armoured man. As she rips it off its hinges, dusty air blows down onto the villain. Superboy uses the distraction to charge forward, though once again he's caught in a twister before he can land a blow. His back hits the ceiling, and as he comes tumbling down, he knocks M'gann out of the air mid-flight.
Dodging her teammates' falling forms, Yue runs forward alongside Aqualad and Robin. Mister Twister simply summons another set of twisters; and while Robin and Aqualad are forced to collide, Yue gets thrown back into the wall behind them.
"Indeed." Mister Twister stands before them in triumph as they each struggle to pick themselves up. "That was quite 'turbing. Thank you." He hovers off the ground, escaping the powerplant through the open doors he had thrown Kid Flash out of just minutes prior.
Carefully, Yue moves to stand back up. Ignoring the ache in her back, she sprints out the open door with the rest of the team to follow the villain.
Kid Flash stands outside facing the Mister Twister, though as he gets thrown back toward the building, Miss Martian reaches her hand out to catch him. When the dust clears, M'gann slowly lowers Kid's hovering form back onto the ground. "I got you, Wally!" She calls out.
"Woah." He glances over at the Martian, "Thanks."
Mister Twister stares at them. "I thought you all would've learned your limitations by now."
Aqualad takes a step forward, his brows furrowing in frustration. "What do you want?!" He demands.
"Isn't it obvious?!" The villain shouts back as he rises into the air. "I'm waiting for a real hero."
He sucks in a deep breath, then glances over his shoulder at Miss Martian. "Read his mind, find a weakness."
Miss Martian's eyes widen. "I thought I wasn't supposed to do that," she points out in confusion.
"It's okay with the bad guys!" Robin reminds her frustratedly.
With a frown, she closes her eyes and presses two fingers to her temple. A few seconds later, she lets out a sigh. "I'm getting nothing!" A wave of realisation washes over, and she gently places the palm of her hand against her forehead. "Hello, Megan! Mister Twister is Red Tornado in disguise! He's inorganic, an android," she explains. "How many androids do you know that can summon tornadoes?"
Yue frowns. "He sent us here," she realises, her dark eyes narrowing into a glare up at the android still hovering above their heads.
"After saying we'd be tested soon enough," Robin glances over at Yue. "This is his test. Something to keep us busy!"
"Speedy called it." Kid Flash sighs, "We're a joke."
Anger blooms in her veins, pricking at her skin like the thorns of a rose. Was this Batman's idea? He was in charge of their so-called mission assignments, so it had to be him who planned all of this.
Years of hard-work, of dedication, surmising into this; this test. It was some sick joke being played on them by those they trusted the most. Yue looked up to the League, she admired them more than she ever had anyone else, and yet this was how they chose to conduct their test?
Treating them like children despite how much they've gone through...
"This game," Wally snaps, "So over."
The four heroes, the original sidekicks, stomp towards the android in their anger.
"We know who you are and what you want!" Robin points up at him.
Aqualad glares, "So let's end this."
"Consider it ended." The android speaks menacingly, it raises its hands into the air. The sky above begins to darken as the tornadoes forming above the android grow larger with every passing second.
Yue flinches as thunder echoes and lightning strikes the ground. "This... This doesn't feel right!" She calls out to the team, raising one of her arms to shield her face from the strong wind. "Something's wrong!"
"Uh, can Red Tornado do that?" Kid Flash wonders.
"You think I'm Red Tornado? Ironic." With his words, lightning strikes the ground directly in front of them. Rocks and dirt fly up from the ground under the immense pressure, everything seemingly going in slow-motion as Yue feels a hand wrap around her wrist. Kid Flash holds her close to his chest, shielding her, as the blast sends the entire team flying back.
"Fine then." The android lowers himself closer. "I won't deny you children have power."
Yue groans, gently rolling Kid Flash's half-conscious body off of hers as she hastily sits up. Miss Martian turns around, placing a finger over her lips in a shushing motion. Her brows furrow, yet without questioning the Martian, she reaches out to cover Kid Flash's mouth as the boy parts his lips to speak.
"But playing hide and seek with you will not help me achieve my objectives, so stay concealed." The android drawls on. Yue couldn't understand what he was saying, she didn't remember hiding from him and he was clearly right there; but even with a hazy mind, she could tell from Miss Martian's look that she was the reason he couldn't see them.
She saved them.
"If you can find me again, I will show no mercy."
As the android flies away, Yue drops her hand from Wally's mouth and pushes herself onto her feet. "What happened?" The speedster questions as Yue helps him stand up.
Miss Martian, still sitting on her knees, frowns. "I placed the bio-ship between us." She explains, flinching as Superboy begins punching the rocks next to him.
He aggressively turns around to face her, his eyes narrowing into a glare. "And that's supposed to make it right?" He growls as he stalks toward her. "You tricked us into thinking Twister was Red Tornado."
Yue's eyes widen as Miss Martian's face falls at the accusation. "That's not her fault." She defends her teammate with a shake of her head. "He's inorganic, like she said, she wouldn't be able to tell the difference no matter how hard she tries."
"She didn't do it on purpose," Aqualad agrees.
"It was... a rookie mistake." Robin sighs, "We shouldn't have listened."
Yue glances over at the shortest of the group with a pointed gaze, "That's bull and you know it! We listened because it made sense, because before now, Red Tornado was the only tornado-making android we knew."
"Doesn't matter if it makes sense, you are pretty inexperienced," Kid Flash's eyes flicker to Miss Martian. "Hit the showers, we'll take it from here."
As Superboy walks past her, he growls, "Stay out of our way."
Turning around, Yue catches a glimpse of Miss Martian; her lips curl down and tears begin to form on her lash-line. All she can do is offer a small smile of sympathy to the Martian, before Kid Flash gently lifts her off the ground and takes off toward the town.
Hues of pinks and oranges are painted over the skies of Happy Harbour by the time the team, minus Miss Martian, arrive in town. The civilians run amuck, trying to escape their homes as Mister Twister wreaks havoc.
"Certainly this will get the required attention!" Twister says manically.
Kid Flash skids to a stop near the entrance of the town square, letting Yue jump out of his arms as he shouts, "You got ours!" He speeds in the android's direction, "Full and undivided!"
Using his momentum, he lifts off the ground and kicks the android, only slightly knocking him back.
"Immaterial and insufficient! You are a distraction I can no longer tolerate." Twister growls.
Superboy comes crashing down from the sky with his fists clenched, prepared for a fight. The pressure forces the android back but does little else as Mister Twister tosses two tornadoes in the direction of Kid Flash and Superboy.
Yue's eyes widen as one of his tornadoes lift up a nearby car, tossing it in her direction. She throws herself to the side, narrowly dodging the vehicle as it crashes against the nearby fountain. She winces as she pushes herself up just enough to watch the rest of her team.
Aqualad and Robin jump over the car, charging toward the android as Superboy rushes at it from another angle. Aqualad is soon thrown into a nearby mansion and a set of explosions go off as Robin throws whatever weapons he can at the android.
Kid Flash, dodging various tornadoes that spin through the town, plucks Yue up off the ground and takes off running with a tornado hot on their trail. She throws an arm around his shoulders, clinging to him as she glances behind them with a frown on her face.
"Nothing seems to work against this guy!" She complains as Kid Flash slows to a stop behind a row of cars. The second her feet touch the asphalt, Yue begins to rummage through her utility belt with furrowed brows, "And I'm running out of explosives."
The house Aqualad had been thrown into crumbles under the weight of both Superboy and a boat Mister Twister had picked up with one of his various tornadoes.
"Your bola?" Kid Flash questions, his emerald eyes flickering back over to her as she raises her gaze from her belt.
"I left it back at the cave."
"Seriously?!"
Her nose scrunches, and she jumps to defend herself, "I didn't think I would need weapons to explore Rhode Island!"
"But you brought your- whatever." Kid Flash turns away from her, his eyes scanning over the surrounding area and falling onto Robin. "Look, there's Rob!" Without another word, he lifts Yue off her feet and takes off toward Robin.
As they reach the Dark Knight's second protege, both he and Yue duck behind the rubble. "You got a plan?" Yue glances over at the boy, watching as he too slings his utility belt across his shoulder.
Kid Flash raises a brow as he looks between the two Gothamites. "You both brought your utility belts?"
Yue scoffs, "Of course?" She answers as though it were obvious.
"Never leave home with it. First thing Batman taught us." Robin chimes in.
"Yeah," Kid Flash chuckles, "Right after 'never go to the bathroom without it'."
With a roll of her eyes, Yue reaches out to softly punch the speedster's shoulder, only to stop when a familiar voice echoes through her mind. "Listen to me!" Yue clutches her head as Miss Martian speaks telepathically. "All of you!"
Despite being a few blocks from where Superboy was climbing out of the rubble, she could hear his voice like he was right beside her, "What did we tell you?!"
"I know! And I know I messed up, but now I'm very clear on what we need to do." Miss Martian pleads, and slowly the images of a well thought-out plan begin to flicker through Yue's mind. "Please, trust me."
Yue meets Wally's gaze, the two sharing a silent look of agreement. "Alright." She thought, agreeing to Miss Martian's plan on behalf of the team. "Let's do this."
Following the plan, the team gathers in the middle of the town square; but not before Red Tornado lowers himself from the sky, his emotionless gaze meeting that of the team's. "Hit the showers, kids," he orders them. "I was hoping you could handle this, clearly you cannot."
His words bring a frown to Yue's face. She knew this wasn't the real Red Tornado speaking, it was all part of their plan, but hearing it in the League member's automated voice sends a chill down her spine.
"But... We've got a plan now!" Robin's eyes narrow at the android and he takes a determined step forward.
"The subject is not up for debate." Red Tornado states. Reluctantly, the young heroes begin to split off, their heads hung low in defeat as they leave Miss Martian behind to act out the rest of their devised plan.
"I was beginning to think you would never arrive." Mister Twister's voice echoes through the town.
"I'm here now." Disguised as Red Tornado, Miss Martian waves her hand and – on the ground below her – Wally begins sprinting at a speed fast enough to replicate a tornado.
With ease, the enemy replicates the attack and forces Miss Martian to dodge to the side. "We are evenly matched, Twister," she taunts in the emotionless voice of the Android.
"No we are not!" Lightning strikes from above, though rather than hitting Miss Martian, it zaps the boat below her.
An explosion rocks through Happy Harbour, and Miss Martian's disguised form hits the concrete limply. The villain lands in front of her, the tips of its fingertips opening to reveal small wires.
"Remain still, android," it orders. "Reprogramming won't take long."
A smug smile tugs at Miss Martian's lips as she turns her head, her face shifting from red to green as she returns to her original form within Mister Twister's grasp. "Longer than you might think." She throws her hand out, knocking the android back into a speedster-made tornado with her telekinesis.
Kid Flash skids to a stop, his signature grin on his face as the android is tossed from his tornado over to Superboy. The clone, with heavy hits, punches two holes into the metal of the android's body, then tosses him into the harbour's water.
Aqualad waits below the surface, electrocuting the android as soon as it dives under the water. The intense pressure blows not only gallons of water, but the android itself, out of the lake.
Yue waits on the pier, her wet bangs sticking to her forehead and her bo-staff in hand as Mister Twister lands in front of her. Swiftly, she raises her bo-staff above her head and jams it into the weak spot between the android's arm and chest plate.
Prying off its arm, she takes a step back and watches Miss Martian raise the almost-destroyed Android into the air. Two birderangs slice through the air, exploding against the punctured metal surface of the android.
It falls to its knees on the concrete with an echoing thud, the chest cavity falling open as the team gathers in front. A man, dressed in a green jumpsuit, scurries out of the mech with a groan. "Foul. I call foul!"
M'gann happily smiles down at the man, though she remains silent as her hand reaches out for a nearby boulder. She drags the boulder into the air, not allowing another word to be said before she drops it onto the man.
"M'gann, no!" Kaldur shouts in horror and rushes forward, too late to stop the Martian.
Yue's heart falls in her stomach, her eyes widening as she stares at the boulder in complete shock. It had happened so fast, she could barely wrap her head around it...
With his glasses still covering his eyes, Dick spins toward M'gann, fire burning in his veins. "I don't know how things are done on Mars," he spits angrily, "but on Earth, we don't execute our captives."
M'gann smirks down at the shorter boy. "And you said you trusted me." With a soft giggle, she faces the boulder once more.
Yue winces as the boulder rises into the air; though instead of seeing the remnants of a man smeared across the pavement, the remains of another robot laid smashed to pieces. The revelation causes a grateful sigh to fall from her chapped lips. "Oh, thank god!"
"That's why I couldn't read his mind." M'gann explains as the boys let out various noises of relief.
Wally lifts his goggles atop his head, and leans down over the robotic parts. He grins, plucking an eyeball off the ground, "Cool! Souvenir." He tosses the piece toward Yue.
Without a second thought, she catches the object in her hands. Her nose scrunches in disgust as her dark eyes rake over the robot's eye. "Seriously, Wal?"
Kaldur reaches out to rest his hand on M'gann's shoulder. "We should have had more faith in you."
"Yeah." Wally nods happily as he drops his souvenir into the pocket of his shirt. "You rocked this mission, get it? Rocked."
Yue rolls her eyes, yet grins as she turns toward M'gann. "Ignore him, he's probably been dying to make that joke."
"We're just 'turbed you're on the team." Dick's words bring a sheepish smile to M'gann's face.
"Thanks," she glances at the boy, "Me too."
Arriving back at the Cave later that night, with the remains of the humanoid robot in tow, the team gathers in the briefing room with Red Tornado. "It was clearly created to sabotage or destroy you," Kaldur informs the android.
He nods. "Agreed."
"Is that why you wouldn't help us?" M'gann questions, a curious look in her amber eyes as she faces Red Tornado.
"No." He answers. "This was your battle. I do not believe it is my role to solve your problems for you." He glances over at Dick and Yue, watching the two Gothamites put a pause on their search for the manufacturer. "Nor should you solve mine for me," he addresses them.
"But, if you're in danger..." M'gann points out sheepishly.
"Consider this matter closed." Red Tornado turns away from the team and begins to walk away.
Wally lets out a quiet scoff, then pushes himself up from his seat. "Batman, Aquaman and Flash, they'd have jumped right in to fix this." He points out, looking between Yue and Dick.
Dick shrugs as he turns the holo-screen off, "Guess if we're to have a babysitter, a heartless machine is exactly what we need."
"You shouldn't say that," Yue whispers with a shake of her head.
"Yeah, dude," Wally agrees. "Harsh."
"And inaccurate." Red Tornado, with his back still facing the team, chimes in from the doorway. "I have a heart. Carbon steel alloy." He looks over his shoulder. "I also have excellent hearing."
Dick gulps, then lets out an awkward laugh. "Right... Sorry. I'll strive to be more accurate."
Kaldur steps over to the boy, "And more respectful."
Yue stands up from her seat and strolls toward the three original sidekicks, throwing her arm around Wally's shoulders with a grin. "You still think Speedy was right about this?"
"No." He answers with a playful roll of his eyes. "This team thing might just work out."
