Ch. 17 Steven's First Official Mission
Steven, Diana, and the Crystal Gems stood in the glowing light of the teleporter, their forms shimmering as they prepared to be sent to their destination. Garnet turned to Steven, her usual calm and confident demeanor ever-present.
"This is your first serious mission," Garnet said, her voice steady but warm.
Steven gulped, his eyes wide with both excitement and nervousness. "I'll do my best! I promise!"
Diana stepped forward, reassuringly touching her little brother's shoulder. "You've trained hard for this, Steven. We're all here to help, and no matter what happens, we've got your back."
Steven looked up at her, her words bringing a small smile. He nodded eagerly. "Thanks, Diana. That really helps."
The teleporter activated, and in an instant, the group was transported to their destination—the legendary Gem Battlefield.
The moment they arrived, Steven's jaw dropped. The landscape before him was both beautiful and eerie. Rows of lush strawberry plants stretched endlessly, their vibrant red fruit contrasting sharply with the countless swords, spears, and shields sticking out of the ground like silent sentinels. The air was thick with a strange, solemn energy.
"This is... amazing," Steven whispered, his voice filled with awe.
Diana smiled softly, remembering her first time seeing the battlefield. "It's something, isn't it? But there's a lot of history here. It's not just a field—it's a reminder of what the Crystal Gems fought for."
As they walked through the field, Pearl began to speak, her voice tinged with nostalgia and reverence. "This used to be a battlefield, Steven. Long ago, during the Rebellion, we fought here against the Homeworld Gems."
Steven's gaze lingered on the swords sticking out of the ground, his expression shifting to one of concern. "All these swords... it must've been a huge fight."
Pearl nodded solemnly. "It was. Many battles were fought here, and this place symbolized the struggle for freedom."
Diana walked silently beside them, her gaze scanning the area. For her, the Gem Battlefield wasn't just a place of history—it was a place where she trained to hone her abilities and better understand her connection to her incarnation, Pink Diamond. She glanced at Steven, hoping this place would help him understand his connection to their mother, Rose Quartz.
After some time, the group arrived at their destination—a massive, upside-down pyramid temple loomed ominously in the distance. Its surface was covered in intricate carvings and murals, each telling a story of ancient Gem battles and secrets.
Steven stared up at the temple, his awe returning. "Whoa. This place is huge!"
"Be careful," Garnet warned. "This temple is filled with traps. Stay close and pay attention."
Inside, the air was cool and heavy, and the walls were lined with murals. Pearl ran her hand along the carvings, her gaze sharp as she studied the images.
"These murals depict the traps within the temple," Pearl explained. "They also show the history of its construction. And look, Steven—this one shows your mother."
Steven stepped closer, his eyes lighting up as he saw the image of Rose Quartz carved into the stone. She was depicted in a fierce battle, her shield raised against a powerful opponent.
Diana lingered nearby, her eyes narrowing as they landed on the figure Rose Quartz was battling. It was unmistakable—Pink Diamond. The realization sent a shiver down her spine, though she quickly composed herself.
Garnet glanced at Diana.
Diana kept her thoughts to herself, recalling what Garnet had told her not too long ago—the truth about Rose Quartz and Pink Diamond. The battle depicted here wasn't as simple as it seemed. Rose hadn't "shattered" Pink Diamond in hatred. It had been Pink Diamond's choice, and Diana herself now carried the essence of Pink Diamond within her.
Shaking off the heavy thoughts, Diana focused on the present. This mission wasn't about the past. It was about helping Steven take his first steps as a Crystal Gem.
"Alright," Garnet said, her voice firm. "This temple is a maze. We'll need to work together to navigate it. Stay sharp."
Steven clenched his fists, determination shining in his eyes. "I'm ready!"
Diana smiled at him. "Let's do this."
And together, they ventured deeper into the temple, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
As the group explored the ancient temple, Steven's curiosity got the better of him. His eyes lit up when he noticed a smaller, peculiar pyramid sitting on a pedestal in the center of the room.
"Hey, what's this?" Steven said, reaching out instinctively.
Diana's eyes widened as she realized what her little brother was about to do. "Steven, wait—!"
But it was too late. The moment Steven touched the pyramid, it glowed brightly and flipped over with a loud, echoing click. The floor began to rumble, and the group suddenly found themselves pulled upward by a powerful force of gravity, spiraling toward a hole in the ceiling.
"Everyone, hold on!" Garnet commanded, trying to stabilize herself as the pull intensified.
"Steven!" Diana called, reaching out to grab him, but the gravitational force was too strong.
With a rush, the group was sucked into the hole and tumbled into a large, dimly lit chamber. They landed in a heap on the smooth stone floor, surrounded by multiple looming doors, each adorned with unique symbols.
Pearl stood up quickly, brushing herself off and surveying the room. "Well, this is... unexpected," she muttered. She glanced at the doors, her mind already strategizing.
"Okay," she began, straightening her posture, "the only logical course of action is to split up. Steven, you'll come with me—"
Amethyst cut her off with a laugh, swooping Steven up into her arms. "Nah, he's coming with me. We'll have so much fun!"
Steven looked up at her, a little nervous. "Uh, Amethyst? I don't know if—"
Pearl's eyes widened in alarm as she marched over and pulled Steven back. "Absolutely not! Together, you and Steven would be a disaster! He needs someone to teach him how to explore a Gem temple properly!"
Amethyst rolled her eyes. "Ugh, boring. Let the kid have some fun for once."
Before the two could bicker further, Garnet stepped forward, her voice cutting through the tension. "Steven will come with me." Her calm yet commanding tone left no room for argument.
Pearl looked ready to protest but hesitated. "Fine. But please be careful with him."
Diana, who had been silently watching the exchange, stepped up beside Garnet and Steven. "I'll go with them," she said. Her voice was calm, but her tone had a protective edge. "I want to keep an eye on my brother, just in case."
Pearl nodded reluctantly. "Alright, then Amethyst and I will take another door. We'll meet back here once we find something useful."
Amethyst gave Diana a playful grin. "Good luck keeping those two out of trouble."
Diana smirked. "Same to you."
With the group divided, Garnet, Diana, and Steven stood before one of the doors. Garnet pushed it open, revealing a dark corridor filled with faintly glowing symbols on the walls.
Steven gulped, gripping his shield tightly. "So... uh, what do you think's behind these doors?"
Diana placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Could be traps, puzzles, or something worse. But we'll face it together. Just stay close, okay?"
Garnet nodded. "You're ready for this, Steven. Trust yourself."
Encouraged by their support, Steven took a deep breath and smiled. "Okay. Let's do this!"
The trio stepped into the corridor, their footsteps echoing as the door closed behind them.
The trio moved cautiously through the temple, navigating one treacherous room after another.
In the first room, pressure-sensitive tiles shot out arrows when stepped on. Garnet led the way, expertly stepping on safe tiles while Steven followed, mimicking her movements. Diana stayed close behind, ready to shield her brother if needed.
"Good job, Steven," Diana said as they exited. "Just remember to stay calm and trust your instincts."
The second room featured a rotating platform suspended over a pit of glowing green ooze. With Diana's steady aim, she used her enchanted bow to hit switches that stabilized the platform while Garnet helped Steven keep his balance.
"This is so much harder than it looks!" Steven exclaimed, wobbling as the platform shifted underfoot.
"You're doing great," Garnet said, her calm voice steadying him. "You're learning."
The third room was unlike anything Steven had seen before. The floor was a deadly mix of molten lava and spiked platforms. Gigantic axes swung rhythmically from the ceiling, and jets of fire burst unpredictably from the walls.
Steven gulped. "Uh... is there a cheat code for this room?"
"Nope," Diana said, pulling out her bow and nocking an arrow. "But we'll get through it, one step at a time."
As Garnet and Diana worked together to deactivate the more dangerous traps, Steven noticed a path of hanging ropes and platforms across the room.
"I think I can do it," Steven said, gripping his enchanted spiky yo-yo.
"Steven—" Diana started, but Garnet raised a hand.
"Let him try," Garnet said softly. "He's ready."
Steven took a deep breath, spinning his yo-yo with confidence. With a running leap, he swung from the first rope to a small, safe platform. He paused to steady himself before leaping again, narrowly avoiding a jet of flame.
Diana watched intently, her heart pounding. "Careful, Steven!"
"Don't overthink it," Garnet advised.
Steven swung again, this time landing on a moving platform. As it shifted towards the exit, he threw his yo-yo to latch onto a sturdy beam above, propelling himself to the final ledge.
"I made it!" Steven cheered, turning to wave at Diana and Garnet.
Diana let out a relieved breath. "That was incredible, Steven."
"Nicely done," Garnet added, her tone full of approval.
As Garnet and Diana made their way across using their skills, they spoke quietly, their voices steady amidst the room's chaos.
"He's growing fast," Diana said, eyes on Steven, who was examining the room's exit. "He's more resourceful than I expected."
Garnet nodded. "He has potential. He needs confidence and experience. You're good for him, Diana."
Diana glanced at Garnet. "We're both good for him. He needs all of us to guide him."
Garnet smiled faintly. "He's lucky to have you as his sister. And we're lucky to have him."
As they joined Steven at the door, Garnet touched his shoulder. "You did well, Steven. You're proving yourself, one step at a time."
Steven beamed, his nervousness replaced by pride. "Thanks, Garnet. Thanks, Diana. I couldn't have done it without you."
The three exited the room together, ready for whatever lay ahead.
Diana, Garnet, and Steven found themselves in the same room they had started in, the glowing doorways taunting them with their cyclical nature.
"Garnet, Diana!" Pearl exclaimed as she entered the chamber. "You're back here too?"
Diana raised an eyebrow. "Looks like it. I take it you've tried all the paths?"
Pearl nodded, exasperated. "Yes! No matter which path we take, we always end up right back here."
Amethyst burst into the room, covered in soot and ice, clearly worse for wear from her attempts to brute-force her way through the traps. "Guys, I got this!" she yelled, only to trip and fall flat on her face, still encased in a block of ice.
Steven and Diana both sweat-dropped at the sight of Amethyst's injuries.
"Amethyst!" Pearl scolded, shaking her head. "How often do I tell you that recklessness gets us nowhere?"
"Eh, worth a shot," Amethyst mumbled as Pearl chipped her out of the ice.
Steven, visibly upset, tugged at his hair. "This is all my fault! We wouldn't be stuck here if I hadn't touched that weird pyramid."
Diana immediately crouched beside him, placing her hands gently on his shoulders. "Hey, Steven, don't think like that. This isn't your fault. None of us knew what that pyramid would do."
"She's right," Pearl added, softening her tone. "These temples are full of mysteries. Sometimes, we have to solve them the hard way."
Steven sniffled, wiping his eyes. "But... what if we're stuck here forever?"
Diana smiled, her voice calm and encouraging. "We'll figure it out. We always do."
Steven suddenly perked up, his expression shifting to one of realization. "Wait a minute! This place—it's like the teacup ride at Funland!"
"The teacup ride?" Garnet asked, tilting her head.
"Yeah!" Steven explained, standing up. "It spins you around so much, you don't know where you're going! I think the rooms here rotate too, so when we go through a door, it connects us to another room and sends us back to the main chamber."
Diana and the Gems exchanged glances, impressed.
"That... actually makes sense," Pearl admitted, stroking her chin.
An idea struck Diana. "If the rooms rotate, the solution isn't in the doors—it's in the mechanism controlling them. Garnet, can you break through the floor? There's gotta be something underneath us."
Garnet nodded, summoning her gauntlets. With a powerful punch, she shattered the floor, revealing a hidden chamber beneath.
The group fell into a massive mechanical room filled with gears and glowing gemstones. At the center was a large device pulsating with energy that seemed to control the rotation of the temple's rooms.
"There!" Steven pointed to the centerpiece, his eyes lighting up.
As Diana and the Gems fought off defensive traps within the chamber, Steven used his enchanted spiky yo-yo to latch onto the central gem. Channeling all his strength, he yanked it free, causing the machine to grind to a halt.
The removal of the gem destabilized the temple. The walls began to crumble, and the floor cracked apart.
"Look out!" Diana shouted as debris rained down.
Thinking fast, Steven summoned his shield bubble, expanding it to encase everyone inside. The explosion rocked the temple, but Steven's bubble held firm, protecting his family from harm.
As the dust settled, Diana, Steven, and the Gems emerged from the rubble unharmed.
"Steven, that was incredible!" Diana said, ruffling his hair affectionately.
"You figured out the puzzle and saved us all," Garnet said, her voice filled with pride.
"You've got a sharp mind, kid," Amethyst added with a grin.
Pearl adjusted her ribbon, nodding approvingly. "And excellent use of your shield. That was very advanced for your first mission."
Steven beamed, his earlier nerves replaced by pride. "Thanks, everyone! I just wanted to protect you like you've always protected me."
Diana smiled warmly, wrapping an arm around her brother's shoulders. "You did more than that, Steven. You showed us just how strong and clever you are. You're a true Crystal Gem."
The group stood together amidst the temple ruins, ready to return home, knowing that Steven's first mission had been a resounding success.
