Chapter 25 ~ You Just Can't Win

The two days after Remus's departure passed by slowly. Tonks's hair was brown again, and she wouldn't speak to anyone. No matter how hard anyone tried, she wouldn't say anything. Most night she sat on their bed, crying over the if's and but's and what she could have done to stop him.

The next morning, breakfast was the same. People talking quietly, Tonks stabbing at her food with no interest, people throwing her sympathetic looks. Tonks just stared at her pancakes. She nibbled them a little, but she didn't feel hungry, so her plate disappeared.

Lunch came around quicker than Tonks had hoped for. She had been cheering up as the day progressed, but as they sat at the large table for the second time that day, she was laughing and back to her usual self. She realized that moping around wasn't going to bring him back, and he would move on anyway. Her hair was right pink again so everyone knew he was alright.

Sirius, Fred, James and Tonks were all arguing over who could shove the most marshmallows in their mouth. Obviously Sirius said he could. So, to find out, they had summoned a massive bowl of marshmallows and shoved them in one by one into their own mouths. The little competition was almost over when talk took a sad route.

"Yes! Yes, I remember that!" Sirius yelled happily. "Hey, do you remember that Rem-"

Sirius stopped. He kept on doing that. Everyone's faces dropped as they remembered Remus.

"Sorry, I-I didn't..." Sirius said before trailing off.

"It's fine Sirius. It is understandable." Ted said sympathetically

Tonks sighed heavily. She had tried not to remember him that day, and it had worked, until now. The room suddenly felt very cold and lonely. It just wasn't the same with him.

Suddenly, the door to the room burst open.

"Why all the long faces. Who died?" a man said happily.

Everyone spun round and gasped. A battered looking Remus stood in the doorway, smiling. The group at the table didn't really react at all. He was meant to be gone, but how was he here?

"Remus!" Tonks cried in surprise. Remus smiled when he saw her coming towards him. She stopped in front. She raised a shaking hand to his face and......slapped him, hard. He stumbled back, clutching his face. Sirius, James, Snape and the others chuckled and gasped.

"What was that f-" Remus cried, but was stopped when Tonks started yelling.

"Remus John fucking Lupin you are in so much trouble!" Tonks yelled. "But it's so good to see you." Tonks sighed happily before crashing her lips agains his. She pulled back smiling happily.

"What the hell was all that for?" Remus cried, still rubbing his cheek where a big hand mark had formed.

"The slap was for scaring me to death and making me believe you were gone, properly. And the kiss was because I'm so glad you aren't gone and I've missed you." Tonks said quickly.

"And hitting somewhere else or hexing me wouldn't have worked?" Remus exclaimed.

"Nope. Slapping is more dramatic." Tonks chuckled before sitting down, still smiling.

Remus cautiously took a seat in between Fred and Lily, across from Tonks and her dad. Fred smiled at him happily and Lily hugged him.

"How the heck did you get out of that one mate?" Sirius asked. "And what did you need to get."

"I jumped. From the window." Remus said. "I knew the house was about to disappear so I jumped. But, a piece of wood whacked me just before it blinded us all. I went flying and landed in a dangerous part of here. And what I had to get is not important anymore since I lost it in the woods.."

"Where?" James asked

"The Forbidden Forest. It's were all the bad people and creatures are sent. They can't get out and have lost their magic." Remus said. "I would have come back sooner but, I got into a bit of bother while there."

"Like?" Sirius asked eagerly.

"Well, first I ran into your dear cousin and aunt Bellatrix-"

"Bellatrix is dead? Karma." Tonks sung happily. "Bella is the one who killed me for those who don't know."

"-and she was very eager to try and kill me....properly. But with no magic she couldn't. Then I ran into some giant spiders....that could talk. Then I saw Wormtail-"

"Slimy bastard." Sirius and James growled at the same time

"-and gave him a good kicking. And I think that's it." Remus said. "Nope wait, I ran into some Hogwarts students who died during the Battle and talked to them. And, I met up with someone who would have loved to have come back, but she wanted to move on fully, leave everything behind."

"Who?" Lily asked. Remus sighed before looking at Tonks and Ted.

"I'm so sorry." Remus said sadly. "It was Andromeda."

Ted and Tonks gasped. Tears welled up in her eyes. Ted tried to not let his tears overflow, but they flowed anyway. Sirius stiffened at the news. His cousin, his favorite cousin was dead, and she never wanted to see them before moving on. But, he'd missed, truly missed her.

"Mums dead?" Tonks croaked.

"I'm so sorry sweetheart." Remus said. "She wanted to stay, but she just couldn't do it. She wanted me to tell you that she was sorry, she looked after Teddy as best as she could. And, that she loved you three very much and that you'd hopefully understand why she couldn't be here."

"Three?" Fred asked

"Sirius. She missed you Sirius. And she always loved you even after everything." Remus said. "And, there's someone, someone else I met."

"Oh god who now?" Sirius asked. Remus looked him straight in the eyes.

"Your brother" he said. "He was in the forest. Wanted me to tell you that he was sorry for being such a prick, and that he let your mum and dad warp his mind."

"I don't care. He was what he was, couldn't care less." Sirius said bluntly. "But Andromeda.....I've missed her so much."

"So mum's really gone?" Tonks asked sadly

"Afraid so. She wanted to see you, but she just couldn't." Remus said. "But she wanted me to also tell you that Teddy got married into the Weasley family. To Bill and Fleurs oldest, their daughter. They have a few kids already, but I don't remember their names."

"Married with kids.....wow." Tonks sighed sadly. "I hate this. I hated that we had to leave so early. Teddy never knew us, probably won't even recognise us if he comes here."

"I'm sure Harry and others told him about us. It would have been cruel to keep him knowing who his true family is." Remus replied. "He might even tell his kids about us."

Tonks chuckled "Wait, so we are grandparents?" she said, "God we must be so old!"

"Forget that, I'm a great grandad. I'd be ancient." Ted laughed

"I wonder how old I'd be." Fred said, "How old George is for that matter."

James clapped his shoulder, "I'm sure he'll be fine." Fred smiled gratefully, but it was forced.

For the rest of the day, James and Sirius let Fred prank with them. Remus helped occationally when they needed more people. Tonks, Lily and surprisingly Snape, were all talking. Tonks still didnt like him, but she was warming up to Lily so she thought she'd try. The three sat outside in a field where the men were messing around. Well, Sirius was chatting up a very pretty women, and Fred and Remus were trying to mess it up.

"Tonks, I never asked. But how did you and Remus get together?" Lily asked. "Did you ask him out, or did he ask you?"

"I think I'll leave you two to your...chat." Snape said uncomfortably, standing up.

"No stay. I was just wondering." Lily said quickly, taking hold of his sleeve, "Please Sev."

Snape sighed before sitting back down, much to Tonks's disappointment.

"Uh...well I told him I was in love with him, he tried to deny he was but he was, pretty obvious. Then after Dumbledore was killed," Tonks paused to send a death glare at Snape, "I argued with him about it again in front of everyone. Then he followed me home, kissed me in the rain, and here we are I guess."

"Well then..." Lily said. "How old was Teddy again when you last saw him?"

"In life, about three weeks old. Here, nine years old I think." Tonks said sadly

"What do you mean you saw him here?" Snape asked, his black eyes analyzing Tonks

"Lily showed me a place where you can see the living. It was a bit of a mistake that we looked, but we had to. We had to see that he was ok and that mum was ok."

"I didn't know you could do that." Snape said

"Trust me, you'd be better off not going." Tonk said sadly.

"Hurts doesn't it?" Lily asked, taking her hand. Tonks nodded, her hair turning slightly blue. Lily hugged her tightly, rubbing her back in comfort. Tonks pulled back smiling happily. As she turned to look around, she saw Fred and Remus take out their wands as they sneaked towards Sirius who was smushing faces with the women. James was still nowhere in sight.

"Where did James go?" Tonks asked

"I believe that he is that women snogging Sirius." Lily laughed

"Excuse me?" Snape asked

"It's a spell James made in fifth year I think, changes everyone to the opposite sex for a few months or something. I'm guessing thats what they did when Sirius wasn't looking." Lily explained

Tonks burst out laughing and Snape, surprizingly, smilied.

"Oh my god, they have to teach me that sometime." Tonks laughed

"No, this place will crash and burn if you do." Lily said, laughing and watching the scene unfold.

Turns out that it was James who was kissing Sirius. When Sirius found out, well let's say it got interesting.

"JAMES YOU PRANCING BASTARD!! HOW COULD YOU!!" Sirius yelled fruriously at his friend as he chased him round the field. Remus and Fred hid behind a tree for they knew Sirius would turn on them as well. Sirius aimed his wand at James and sent many hexes, but none made contact.

"It wasn't just me, what about Fred and Remus!?" James yelled over

"Oh yeah. LUPIN! WEASLEY! YOU ARE DEAD MEN!!" Sirius yelled, heading towards the trees. James was panting hard as he collapsed next to Lily and Tonks.

"Having fun are we?" Tonks asked happily

"Oh yeah. Brilliant fun." James panted sarcastically. He rested his head on Lily's lap and she started playing with his fringe. James closed his eyes happily. But a scream snapped them back open again quickly.

Sirius had been aiming his wand at Remus and firing hexes at him, when Remus ducked. A hex hit Tonks in the chest, sending her backwards slightly. She'd hit her head so hard off the ground that she'd knocked herself out. And to make matters worse, her front teeth were growing and growing.

"What happened to her?" James asked, sitting up.

"Black must have gotten too excited when he used Densaugeo." Snape replied.

Remus came hurrying over. He scowled at Sirius when he saw Tonks. He pointed his wand at her and managed to stop her teeth from growing and put them back to their normal size.

"Should we wake her?" Lily asked

"No. I'll take her home. Let her rest." Remus said. He scooped her up and started to carry her home.

"I'm really sorry." Sirius called to him.

"Sure." Remus called back. Tonks was still out cold when he reached their house. He carried her upstairs and lay her on the bed gently. He kissed her forehead before turning to leave.

"Please don't go. My head hurts." Tonks groaned.

"Oh, you're awake!" Remus said happily.

"I have been for most of the time. But you looked quite happy carrying me so I didn't want to stop you." Tonks chuckled weakly.

"You sneaky little-"

"Yes?"

"Sneaky little witch."

"That I am Remus. That. I. Am." Tonks said. "But seriously though, please don't leave."

"Fine. But you need to rest. I'll leave once you are sleeping." Remus said, shuffling next to her on the bed. Tonks rested her head on his chest it was weird not hearing a heartbeat, but the quietness was still just as soothing. Remus was playing with her hair gently, it felt soft under his touch. She turned over to look up at him sleepily.

"I love you, you know that?" she yawned.

"I do. And I love you too." Remus said quietly, playing with her fringe. Tonks sat up so their lips could meet. They met slowly, but it turned fast quickly. Soon they were tugging at each others clothes, but Remus stopped them when Tonks winced almost silently.

"Maybe, you should rest." He said, pulling back breathless.

"Maybe you're right. Tonks sighed, rubbing her head.

"Night love." Remus said, kissing her lips one last time before leaving the room. He trudged down the stairs, running his hand through his hair. Remus didn't want to admit it, but staying in The Other Side is hard. The pain of not knowing is probably the worst. But the pain of knowing is even worse than that.

"Pain for knowing, pain for not." Remus sighed, "brilliant."

Suddenly, there was a soft tapping at the door that he could only just hear. He looked at the door to see Sirius peaking in.

"Hey Moony. How is lil Nymphie?" Sirius asked

"Fine. She's just sleeping." Remus said. "Come on in."

"Nah I was stopping by before I get the Stag." Sirius laughed

"Ok, well if that's all then-"

"Actually no. You see, there is someone here who'd really like to meet you."

"Who might this be?" Remus asked. "If this is some joke you planned with James then-"

"No it's not, I swear." Sirius said quickly. "Remus, I'd like you to meet Teddy Remus Lupin."

Remus stiffened when he heard the name. Sirius stepped away from the door to reveal a turquoise haired man, about eighteen or nineteen years old standing awkwardly by the door. What shocked Remus the most at how alike his son looked to when he was that age.

"Teddy?" Remus gasped, standing up quickly

"Dad?" Teddy said, he even sounded just like him.

Teddy rushed forward and hugged his dad tightly. Remus returned the hug, tears welling up in his eyes.

His son. He finally had his son back in his arms. But he wasn't the baby anymore, he was a young man now.
