Chapter 24 ~ Falling Apart

"Remus!" Ted called.

It was the next morning on The Other Side. The Marauders -that now included Fred- sat at the table. Lily and Snape were now getting along very nicely. James and Snape on the other hand weren't. James had forgiven and regretted his actions years ago, but Snape still hated him with passion. Same with Sirius.

Anyway, they were all sitting at the table, happily eating when Ted ran in.

"Remus! Come quick!" Ted cried, panting.

"What, why?" Remus asked

"Just come on. It's your parents. They're sick." Ted said

"Sick? But no one gets sick here." James said

"Exactly my point, now come on!" Ted cried before running out. Remus followed, soon followed by everyone else and a not so interested Snape. Ted led them to Remus's parent's house and burst in through the door. Remus came in a second later.

"Where are they?" Remus asked

"In their room. We'll leave you to it." Ted said, grasping his shoulder before turning to the crowd at the door.

Remus nodded before heading up the stairs slowly. He was breathing heavily, scared at what he would find. He pushed open the bedroom door and slipped inside.

"Mum? Dad?" Remus gasped. At the sound of his voice, they both turned their heads towards him extremely slowly. Both were as white as snow, as thin as bone, and looked as fragile as a flower petal. It looked like time had caught up with them, but they couldn't rot away.

"Remus...." Mrs Lupin said quietly, her voice only just audible. "Come here."

Remus walked over to her, eyes wide with shock. She took his hands in hers, and he was horrified at how old and shriveled they looked.

"I'm so proud...of you. We both our......we are just sorry.....that we...we weren't there for you." Mrs Lupin croaked happily.

"I'm sorry for shunning you." Mr Lupin said, his voice louder but no less hoarse. "When you got...bitten."

"It's fine. I understood, and I still do." Remus sniffed

Mr Lupin smiled. "Could we....have a word with....your wife....if you don't mind." He said quietly. "We love you you know Remus.....always remember that."

Remus looked a little confused, but nodded. He let go of his mothers hand and left the room. Everyone was still crowding round the door, talking quietly. But all chatter stopped when they saw him.

"Remus, what's wrong? Why are they ill?" Tonks asked, stepping forward.

"I don't know, but they want to see you." Remus replied

"Me? Why me?" Tonks asked, confused

"I don't know." Remus shrugged. He turned around and headed up the stairs again, Tonks following. He led her to the bedroom and stopped outside the door.

"They are in there." Remus sniffed. "I'll be downstairs."

Tonks nodded slightly. She kissed his lips before heading inside. Remus sighed before heading downstairs. He sat down on the sofa. Sirius, Lily and James sat next to him while Snape just stood awkwardly by the door next to Fred.

"I just don't get it. How can they be ill here, I thought you couldn't get ill here." Remus cried with frustration

"Maybe I can explain." A wise voice said from outside. Everyone turned to see a man with pure white robes, a long grey beard and half-moon glasses standing in the doorway smiling, his blue eyes twinkling happily.

"Dumbledore!" Everyone cried

"You're back!" Lily cried happily

"Hello Lily, James, Sirius, Fred, Ted, Severus, Remus." Dumbledore said happily, nodding to each of them individually.

"Dumbledore, what's going on, why are they ill?' Ted asked

"Because they are moving on." Dumbledore replied simply, "They have finished their waiting. They have no reason to stay."

"So they are dying?" Fred asked

"No, they are fading. It doesn't hurt. They can't really feel anything anymore." Dumbledore said

"How long till....till they are fully gone?" Remus asked, voice cracking

"About twenty minutes Our time." Dumbledore said sadly. "But you shouldn't be there. They may not feel anything but it still isnt pleasant. And since they no longer need this house, it with vanish instantly, taking everything inside with it."

Remus sniffed loudly, tears distorting his vision. Lily wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tightly, whispering soothingly into his ear. Snape tried not to let the jealousy show.

"So this happens to all of us?" Snape said

"If you have decided what/who you want to see one last time before you finally move on, then yes. You will all move on." Dumbledore said

"Then why do we go here first? Why couldn't we just past this part and move on?" Fred asked

"Because we all have something we want to see. Many pass by even though they want to wait. But they can't. The pain of leaving the Real World behind is too much for some." Dumbledore replied

"Could we suddenly decide we don't want to be here anymore and just leave?" James asked

"Of course, but I'm sure you are waiting for Harry."

"I think most are waiting for Harry."Fred said

Lily laughed when Fred said that. Mostly because it was true. They suddenly heard footsteps coming from the staircase. They all turned round to see Tonks sadly making her way down.

"Are you alright? What did they say?" Remus asked, meeting her at the bottom of the stairs.

"Just told me to look after you. And telling me somethings, things you'll find out on your own apparently." Tonks replied.

"And very soon I fear." Dumbledore said sadly

"Dumbledore?" Tonks said in surprise

"Hello Nymphadora." He said, smiling

"Please, don't call me Nymphadora." Tonks said angrily, hair turning slightly. Dumbledore chuckled along with Sirius, James, Remus and Lily.

"Still hate the name?" Ted laughed

"Yes, always." Tonks replied quickly. "We should go, they told me to tell you that we need to go, like now." Tonks said, turning to Remus and taking his hand.

"Yeah, one minute though. I have to do something." Remus said quietly.

He stood up and once again made his way up the stairs. When he opened his parents room, they were sleeping. He gently kissed both their foreheads before leaving again, for the last time.

He then made his way down to his old bedroom. It looked exactly how he left it. A pile of books by the bed, quills and ink bottles on his now very dusty desk, the brown paper bag lying on his bed. Tears started to fill his eyes as he looked around, memories of his childhood came flooding back.

Smiling happily with sadness in his eyes, he made his way downstairs. The living room was now empty, but Tonks was waiting for him by the door. She smiled sadly and held her hand out for him to take. He took it gratefully and they both left the house. They both joined the group of people by the street. Everyone but Snape gave him a sympathetic smile. Suddenly, the wind started to pick up.

"Stand back." Dumbledore ordered.

Everyone obeyed as the tiles started to rip off the house. Remus gasped, he'd forgotten something, something important!

"No." Remus whispered. He couldn't lose it, not again. Breaking free from the crowd, he ran towards the crumbling house.

"NO REMUS!" Tonks screamed as he was almost hit by a sharp piece of wood. Snape, who was standing next to her, chased after her as she started towards the door in which Remus had just disappeared through. She wriggled and kicked, but he wouldn't let her go.

"I have to go after him!" She cried more of the house disappeared.

"You can't. He'll be fine!" Snape yelled over the noise. He put Tonks back down, but he was ready in case she ran again.

The house was almost completely gone, but Remus still wasn't back yet. Everyone watched in horror as piece by piece, the hope of their friend returning got slimmer and slimmer.

Suddenly, a bright white light flashed, blinding them all. They all fell to the ground, sheilding each other and their eyes. The light soon dimmed and they could see again. As their vision returned, all that lay in front of them was plain grass, but no Remus. Tonks scanned the area, but he wasnt there, there was no sign of him anywhere. Then it hit her; he was gone, the house took him as well as his parents. He'd moved on and she'd never see him again.

Her legs buckled and she fell to the floor, sobbing. Ted sat next to her and took her in his arms.

"He's gone," Tonks sobbed, "I'll never see him again."

Sirius and James glanced at each other before hugigng each other tightly, tears rolling down their cheeks at the loss of their best friend. Snape had Lily in his arms, she was crying heavily as well. Although Snape wasn't fond of Remus, he still felt bad that he was gone. He seemed to be missed dearly already.

Tonks's hair was blue, bright blue. Blue as her broken and damaged, unbeating heart. She'd never see him again. Her last glimpse of her now gone husband was his determind face as he jumped through the shaking doorway. The group started to walk away solemly. Arms wrapped around each other in an attempt to forget the pain they were feeling. But pain demands to be felt, however pain and unbearable

This may be the Other Side, but tragedy will still occur at anytime........
