Chapter 21 ~ The Other Side

Some of you will remember this from Shine Bright Like a Wolfstar. Except I don't end it here, I have left out Amy because she doesn't need to be here and I change some things. Enjoy

White................

That was all Remus could see. Things echoed faintly inside his head, memories, whispers of his past. They eventually ceased into nothing. He just lay there, wherever 'there' was exactly.

"Well get up then you lazy ass." Someone laughed. Remus knew that voice all too well. He opened his eyes, and there he was, a man he had missed terribly.

"Didn't think I'd be seeing you so soon mate, thought you'd have grown old." Sirius laughed

Sirius looked different, he looked younger, healthier and stronger. He helped Remus to his feet.

"I'm dead?" Remus gasped.

"Afraid so." Sirius sighed, grasping his shoulder.

"But, what about my family?" Remus cried. "My wife and son?"

"Wife and son? " Sirius exclaimed "You need to tell me everything. Who's your wife, how'd you meet, what does she look like, her age and when the hell did you have this kid!?"

"Later." Remus sighed, not ready to talk about what he'd left behind.

Remus was looking around, but it was just white "Where are we?"

"Now that is a matter of opinion and belief." Sirius said.

He started walking and Remus followed. "Some say it's Heavan, other's say it's a Train Station because we can move on properly when we want to, some say its the Afterlife. And some say it's a space caught between life and death."

"What do you say?" Remus asked

"I call it 'The Other Side'." Sirius replied

"Why?"

"We aren't on the living side of things anymore. That's gone from us, forever. This is the other side, the side of the dead. The side we can live and be eternally young." Sirius explained

Remus was about to reply when colours started drifting towards him in small broken fragments. Shapes, buildings, smells and noise began to appear and they switched his senses back on.

"Where are we now?" Remus asked, a little scared

"This is where we stay." Sirius said "We all have a house, each one designed for our needs. I've met many familiar faces around here. Would you like to meet them?"

"Sure." Sighed Remus, knowing that he didn't have anything better to do

Sirius walked up to a big red bricked building and knocked on the door five times before entering. Nothing could prepare Remus for who was inside. Inside the building was a massive living room with a large circular table. And around the table, were many many faces he thought he'd never see again.

"Lily!? James!?" Remus cried in shock when he saw them.

Those two people turned round and stared at him in shock. Lily, James then instantly smiled warmly. Lily jumped up and hugged Remus tight. James soon replaced her in Remus's arms.

"Welcome home buddy." James said

"Thank you Remus," lily said happily "Thank you for looking after our son, I couldn't have asked for a more perfect friend."

"It was my pleasure." Remus said sadly, suddenly remember his son he left behind. He sighed loudly, trying not to remember.

"You ok?" James asked

"Remus has a wife and son!" Sirius yelled happily.

"Tell us everything." Lily and James said in unison after a moment of shock.

"Not until we've said hello." A deep voice behind them said.

Lily and James backed off to reveal who it was.

"Dad!" Remus cried. He hugged his dad tightly, tears of joy forming in his eyes. A women walked up behind them and smiled.

"Mum." Remus cried again, hugging her like a long lost child

"We are so proud of you sweetheart." She said to him. Remus stepped back and had to wipe away tears from his eyes. He hadn't felt so loved and wanted or such a long time.

"You've done us all proud, for sticking in there even when it felt hopeless." James said proudly.

"So what about this wife and son of yours eh." Lily laughed, elbowing him in his side.

"My son's name is Teddy. He is only a few weeks old." Remus said sadly. "Here, I've got a picture " Remus dug the clean photo out of his pocket. Lily, James, Sirius and Remus's parents crowded to see it. The all laughed happily when they saw the turquoise haired baby waving at them happily.

"Remus, I'm so sorry." Lily cried, pulling him into a hug.

"Mate, I'm sorry." Sirius said sympathetically.

"So am I, hardly got a chance to be around him with all these attacks and my-".

"Furry little problem." James laughed.

"Yeah." Remus sighed, not wanting to tell them the truth. His eyes soon glistening with tears of sorrow. "But at least he'll have his mother and grandmother."

They all sat down at the table. The occasional sympathetic look was given in Remus's direction, but he didn't notice. Lively chatter started back up again. Mostly them asking Remus everything that had happened since they died. Suddenly, the front door opened slowly. Heads stepped towards it as it revealed the red haired man behind it.

"Hi, um, where exactly am I?" the man asked.

"Fred!?" Remus cried in disbelief, standing up. Fred looked at him with equal shock.

"Lupin? But wh-" Fred stammered. "What's happened?"

"We're dead. All of us." Remus said solemnly.

"No, no I can't be. What about Ginny, mum, dad...George!?" Fred cried, tears streaming down his face when he remember his now twinless twin.

"I'm so sorry Fred." Remus said, stepping up to him. "I'm sure they'll be alright."

Fred nodded, but he was still shaking

"So who's this?" Sirius asked

"Fred Weasley." Fred sniffed

"Oh, Fred.....Hi Fred." Said happily.

"Hi Sirius. Been a while." Fred joked

"Not long enough." Sirius sighed

Fred nodded.

"Fred um, this is my mum and dad, Sirius obviously, and Lily and James Potter." Remus said, pointing to people around the room.

"What, Harry's mum and dad?" Fred said quickly.

"The very same." James laughed, sticking his hand out to Fred.

"James, this is one of the boys I told you about. They found our map." Sirius said happily.

"Your map! You helped create the map!?" Fred cried

James nodded. Waving his wand, James drew up another chair and he, Fred and Sirius talked about all the adventures they had with the map. Remus shook his head before sitting back down. Lily came and sat next to him.

"So, tell me about this wife and son of yours." Lily said quietly.

"I don't know if I can just now." Remus sighed

"Rem, talking about it can help. Trust me, I know." Lily said, taking his hands

"Yeah but, I'm just so worried about her. I know that when I was alive I still wasn't so sure how much I loved her, though we were married and with child. But now I'm gone...I know now my heart was in the right place, that it was always right." Remus sighed.

Lily smiled sadly before hugging him tightly. Unknowing to the two hugging, James was watching them suspiciously from the side.

"And why are you hugging?" James asked coldly.

"Merlin's sakes James it's a hug." Lily sighed, releasing Remus.

"Yeah but why?"

"Remus misses his wife and son." Lily answered.

"Oh, right ok. James said, feeling bad for asking in the tone he used.

"You know, you never did tell us about your wife, just your son." Remus's dad said.

"Yeah. So, tell us." Sirius said like a playful child.

"Can I not, not just now anyway." Remus sighed, avoiding everyone's eyes.

"Fred, you know right?" Sirius said

"Uh huh..." Fred replied

"So te-"

"Fred I swear to Merlin if you say anything I will hex your ass off." Remus growled sadly, a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

Fred pale and sunk further into his seat. Sirius and James just smiled.

"And there is the Moony we know and love." James said triumphantly.

Remus scowled a scowl Snape would be proud of, but soon turned it to a smile and laughed.

"Well, we'd best be heading off now. Dinner time I think." Mrs Lupin said, standing up.

"We'll need to catch up. Please visit us tomorrow." Mr Lupin said.

"I will " Remus said, standing up. "It was good to see you again."

"You too." His mother said, hugging him tightly. Remus shook his dad's hand wrote they left. Remus sat next to Lily who had moved back next to James.

"Is anyone hungry, I'm hungry." Sirius said, looking around.

"Padfoot, you're always hungry." James said

"So, I love food. Problem?" Sirius said

"Yes. You're going to eat all the food there is here, and there is unlimited food supply!" lily laughed

"I'll take that as a no then shall I." Sirius said

"No I'm bloody starving." Lily exclaimed.

Sirius laughed before waving his wand. The table was instantly covered in food ranging from the sickly sweet to the horribly sour. Remus's jaw dropped. It was just like the feasts at Hogwarts! With an encouraging growl from his stomach, he filled the plate in front of him. He didn't need to worry about trying to squish all the food together to make it fit, as the plate grew in size whenever it needed to.

Desert came soon after, and it couldn't have tasted more delightful if an angel had made it.

"I have a question." Remus said as he finished his food, plate instantly disappearing

"What is it Rem?" James asked.

"What happens after this? Does it end, do we die again? What happens?" He asked

"You move on." Lily replied

"Move on?" Remus asked

"Yeah. When you have finished your waiting you simply, disappear. We will all remember you, your name will be added to your family memorial and then you'll simply cease to exist." Lily replied glumly

"When you've finished waiting for what?" Remus asked.

"Whatever you are truly wanting to see one last time before you're truly gone. James replied

"Wait, family memorial, could you please explain?"

"There is a Cemetery here, each has a place for every family that ever was and will ever be. Each had a statue of the deceased since the start of your family name. There is a description of your life and death underneath your statue." James explained "It's so you can find out about everyone you are related to. It's great."

"Wow." Remus breathed

"There is more to explain but later, we have all the time in the world." Lily said

"Speaking of time, is there actually time here?"

"Yes and no." Sirius replied "It really depends, sometimes an hour here could mean a few minutes in the Living World. Or a few minutes here could mean a few centuries there. It just depends."

"So, ten years could have passed and we wouldn't ever know?"

"That's right."

Remus sighed sadly and sunk deeper into his chair. He hated not knowing if Tonks was alright. Worst of Teddy. He was only a few weeks old, and already lost his dad.

"That's depressing." Remus sighed, running his hands through his no longer grey riddled hair.

"Yeah. But that's death my friend." James agreed

Remus was about to ask something when the door opened. A young women with bubblegum pink hair peaked round the door, a nervous look on her face.

"Wotcher. Sorry to interrupt but I was wondering if you could tell me where I might find Remus Lupin, if you know him.

"Nymphi?" Sirius asked ", standing up when he saw her.

"Sirius?" Tonks gasped. "What are you doing here?"

"Same thing as you. Living the life of a dead person. He replied.

Tonks rushed forward and hugged him tightly. Sirius hugged her back. Remus was shocked at the sight of her. If she was here then...she was dead! Was Teddy alright? How old was he? Was the war over?

"Tonks?" Remus said, shaking himself from his daydream.

"Remus!" Tonks squeaked. Her eyes filled with tears when she saw him. She couldn't believe he was there, he couldn't be there. Remus jumped up and rushed over to her, Tonks doing the same. They met in an emotional embrace. Tonks pressed her lips against his. They felt like his lips, tasted like his.

And that's when the terrifying truth hit her. They were both dead. Teddy was an orphan. And her mother, Andromeda had now lost three members of her family, in the space of a month......
