Chapter 17

I jump around a lot in this chapter. And, I've lost my DH book for now so I'll probably miss some things.

-------------------------------------------------------

Two more months had passed, and it was now October. Remus, still hadn't come back to Tonks, but she'd moved on already. There was no point in denying that she didn't still love him, because she did, but she wouldn't cry everyday or lock herself up in her room just because she was without him. And anyway, she was still pregnant with their child. Her bump was beginning to show more and she was getting over the 'morning sickness'. But there were still the mood swings and cravings.

Remus on the other hand, had partly settled down. He found some members of the Order and they had started an underground radio station, telling the listeners how it really is. It was over at the Weasley's house that most broadcasts were made. It was safest there because there was that many people. Molly had given him the cold shoulder once he told them why he was alone. But she warmed up to him once he told her of his plans (plans he didn't particularly want to stick with)........

"Mum?" Tonks sighed over the sound of the radio.

"Yeah?" Andromeda replied

"Will dad be ok? Out there I mean?" Tonks asked

"I'm sure he'll be fine. As long as he isn't alone, he'll be alright." Andromeda said. But she sounded as if she was trying to convince herself. Tonks tried to hug her mum tightly, but the bump got in the way. She chuckled slightly as they pulled away. Tonks gasped.

"What is it?" Andromeda asked

"Stomach pains. I'm going to get some chocolate." Tonks replied. She stood up, hunched over as it was pretty painful.

Tonks had gotten a bad craving for chocolate ever since she became pregnant. It helped not only make her feel better, but also help her forget how bad everything is. Helps her forget that he may never see dad again.

"I'm just going out Molly, I need to get some things." Remus said as Molly entered the kitchen.

"Ok Remus. Will you be back soon?" Molly asked

"Possibly. If I'm not back by nightfall tomorrow without sending word I'm safe, assume I'm dead." Remus replied stiffly. Molly nodded, hugging him before he left.

The thing most people had accepted in this war is that you are most likely going to die. So if you just accept that without cowering in the shadows, it might help you live longer......might.

Remus stood outside his house. He needed a proper place to stay. It was predictable, but he was tired of relying on others to help him through.

The house looked like it had the night he left. His clothes sprawled on his bedroom floor, food inside cupboards (food that really needed to be thrown out), Tonks's clothes were now gone. And was the amount of dust everywhere had increased, and how big and lonely it felt. Sighing, Remus turned on the lights, but not before putting up stronger protective charms around the property. It made him feel safer as he waved his wand, and everything was clean again.

"Expecto Patronum!" Remus said. A glowing wolf erupted out the end of the wand and landed in front of him.

"I'm safe. Thanks for letting me stay but I must leave. Keep in touch." He said. The wolf stood for a second longer before vanishing out through the window. Sinking into the couch, Remus sighed deeply.

And for the first time he realized something; he missed her. He missed Tonks. Her smile, her worried face, her colour changing eyes and hair, her giggle. Heck he missed all of her. But after all he said, he wasn't sure if he could return, too much was said. He would have to try because h-he....he was in love with her......

If anyone had told Tonks that being five months pregnant, during a war and a bad winter would be easy, she'd have hexed them then and there, straight into oblivion. Her baby bump was pretty big, but still not full size. She could feel the baby moving and kicking sometimes; one of the best feelings a first time mother could have. And according to her mum, they would have a baby boy. Something to do with the shape of the bump or something.

She still hadn't heard from her dad, and they couldn't find the pirate radio station anymore. Miss one password, you miss a lot.

*.*.*.*.*.*.*.Christmas Eve*.*.*.*.*.*.*.

Tonks and her mum were snuggled up together on the sofa, keeping each other warm and watching muggle Christmas movies. Some were very entertaining, others were sad. They watched them all day and for most of the night. It had started to rain at lunch time, badly.

At around midnight, the rain hadn't eased at all. Suddenly, a loud banging came from the door. Tonks looked at her mother in worry. Who could that be?

Tonks went first -much to her mums protests- with her wand drawn and ready.

"Who is it?" she demanded harshly, startling even herself.

"Someone who's been a bastard, and extremely sorry for it." A man replied from behind the door, a ver familiar sounding man. But it couldn't him, never.

"That doesn't answer my question. Who are you and what do you want?" Tonks spat.

"My name is Remus John Lupin, also known as Moony, one of the four creators of the Marauder's Map, werewolf, married to Nymphadora Tonks, know as Tonks or Dora, father of her child." The man said.

It was him, definitely him, but why was he back? Tonks could feel tears in her eyes again, bringing back the memories of when he just left her.

"C-could you open the door please? It's very wet and cold outside and I can't feel my face or hands." Remus called to her, snapping her out of her sad memories.

She opened the door slowly, her mum watching cautiously behind her. Once the door was opened, they could see him clearly. His hair was plastered to his face, his cheeks incredibly red, lips blue, he was soaked to the bone and shivering madly.

"What are you doing here Remus?" Tonks asked, not letting him inside yet. She tried to say it coldly, but her voice cracked when she said his name.

"I-I want to say I'm so so so so s-sorry for leaving you like that. I was a stupid, h-heartless bastard because you really needed me and I left and wow your b-belly is huge." Remus exclaimed, shivering even more.

"Happens when you're pregnant. Now if that's all I'll-"

"No wait please, wait." Remus cried. "I was a fool for leaving you and not seeing that I love you. But I do now. I love you, Tonks."

Tonks was taken back by the sweetness and honestly in his quivering voice.

"I want to help raise our child like a proper dad. A dad isn't just the guy who helped make it, he's the one who helps raising it with respect and love. And, I missed you, I still do. And if you still want me, will you take me back?" Remus pleaded, trying to keep his voice under control.

"Are you just saying all this because it's cold and you want in, or because it's true and you really are sorry?" Tonks asked, a slight menace to her tone.

"I'm saying it because I really really really want to come inside as it truly, very cold out here. But! But, also because I am truly sorry that I left you and I want to be with you again, help you through the pregnancy and war, and being without your dad." Remus said, with so much honesty, it shone in his eyes.

Tonks looked at her mum with uncertainty, but she knew her decision.

"Do you want to stay out there and freeze, or will you come inside?" Tonks asked, stepping aside. Remus's cold and frozen face lit up as he step inside, his coldness radiating off of his body made her shiver. When he saw Andromeda, her eyes were sad and pained.

"How did you know about Ted?" she asked, not looking him in the eye.

"I knew he was muggle-born and would have had to run. But also because I spoke to him last week -i think- before we very quickly had to go our separate ways." Remus replied.

"He's ok?" Tonks asked hopefully.

"As far as I know yes, he's alright. Last time I saw him he was with two goblins and a class mate of Harry's, Dean Thomas."

Tonks and Andromeda sighed with relief. Andromeda took out her wand and with a flick of it, Remus was completely dry and starting to warm up a bit.

"Thanks." He said gratefully.

"I'll leave you two to it, you have a lot to discuss." Andromeda said smiling before heading into the living room, giving the two lovers some privacy.

"What made you come back?" Tonks asked

"Many things. Harry, Molly, the empty and lonely house, missing everything I love about you." Remus replied

Tonks could feel her cheeks going red.

"How far along are you now?" Remus asked

"About five months. Getting there." Tonks joked happily.

"I truly am sorry you know." Remus sighed. "I would have come back sooner but, I wasn't sure if you still loved me."

"Of course I still love you." Tonks said. She stepped forward, closing the gap between them a little.

"I'd love to hug you closely again, but I'n afraid our son would get in the way." Tonks laughed. Remus did as well.

"Our son." Remus sighed happily. He kneeled down so his head was level with the baby bump.

"Hey buddy. I'm back now, we're going to be a proper family again." He said sweetly. Remus pressed his lips gently against the bump before standing up again. This time, he pressed his lips against Tonks's -with a little difficulty- and kissed her lovingly. As they pulled away, they heard the clock chime midnight.

"It's good to have you back." Tonks said sweetly. "I missed you."

"I missed you too." Remus said, before kissing her softly again.

That night,Remus stayed with the two women. Tonks lay in his arms as they cuddle up together on the sofa, both resting their hands protectively on their growing child.

"Merry Christmas Tonks." Remus whispered sleepily.

"Merry Christmas Remus." Tonks yawned quietly.

And before long, the two were sleeping soundlessly on the couch again, like nothing had changed.....but everything had.
