Chapter 12
It was about three am when Tonks awoke. Her head and back were sore but it passed in a matter of minutes. Sitting up, she noticed a few things she didn't remember being like that before:
1) she was inside on her bed.
2) shorts and a vest top was all that she was wearing.
3) Remus was awkwardly sleeping underneath her. He was lying on his front, one arm covering his face, the other hand under his stomach. His feet dangling off of the bed, legs underneath Tonks's back.
"How the hell did we end up like that?" Tonks wondered to herself. Before she could even answer her own question, her stomach growled deeply. She was absolutely starving. Trying her best not to disturb Remus, she slipped off the bed and out the door. A few steps creaked from under her weight as she tip-toed down, but apart from that, the night was pleasantly silent.
Tonks flicked the light switch on in the kitchen and sleepily made her way to the fridge. The kitchen is where she seemed to always be the most tired, strange....
As Tonks opened the fridge door, she sighed happily at the fridge full of food, that was now at her mercy. Grabbing an apple, two chocolate bars, strawberries and marshmallows. Tonks placed all of it on the table before melting the chocolate bars, pouring it over the marshmallows and cut strawberries, and waiting for it to set, she ate her sweet, red apple.
"Mmmh." Tonks sighed once the chocolate had solidified again. She sat down on the sofa munching away as he watched a muggle film called 'Treasure Planet'. It was a child's film but it was still good. But the Cyborg reminded her a lot of Mad-Eye. A tear came to her eye, but she blinked it away, no point in crying over the past that you can't change.
The chocolate marshmallows and strawberries were nice and sweet, but she was still craving sugary things. Carrying the empty bowl, she went in search of more sugar goodness. Unknown to Tonks, she wasn't alone in the kitchen.
"Hungry are we?" A voice from the shadows said.
Tonks cried out in fright and threw the bowl towards the source of the voice. She heard it make contact, followed by a cry of pain.
"What was that for?" Remus exclaimed, moving forward so she could see him. He was rubbing his head in the place where the bowl hit him.
"You scared me." Tonks exclaimed, breathing fast. "Why are you down here so early?"
"I should be asking you that, shouldn't I?" He replied
"Don't answer my question with a question." Tonks sighed.
"I was wondering where you were. Then I noticed the kitchen light on and wondered what you're doing down here so I came down. I found the fridge open, the rest of the marshmallows, strawberries and the last of my two chocolate bars gone." Remus said. "So I'll ask again, why come down here and eat all this so early?"
"I woke and was absolutely starving." Tonks replied. "And I was craving surgery foods."
"So you're feeling better then?" Remus asked, sitting down.
"Yeah, I feel alright." Tonks replied, sitting across from him. "The sickness comes every now and again. But I'm fin-"
"Don't say you are fine. I know you aren't, and it's not just a sickness bug like you said."
"But I am fine. And it's simply just a sick bug." Tonks protested, taking his hands, but Remus removed his from the table.
"There is something you aren't telling me. And I'd like know right now because you haven't been fine for a while. At first I thought you were just nervous about the war but then I remembered you're stronger than that." Remus said bluntly, avoiding her eyes.
"I'm not certain about what is wrong." Tonks said quietly.
"Could you at least enlighten me because I'm getting worried, and if you are sick then let me help you."
"Remus, I'm not exactly sick, but I'm not fine." Tonks started slowly. "I-I'm..."
"Mmmh."
"I think I'm pregnant." Tonks said quickly. She looked at Remus. His face was hard to read, it was frozen with thought.
"W-what?" He said slowly
"I might be pregnant." She repeated
"You're kidding, right?" he asked hopefully, but her face said it all, she was serious. "But you can't be! I mean we didn-"
"Yes we did." She said, cutting him off.
"Ok we did but we were carful weren't we?" Remus asked, almost pleading.
"No. We weren't carful." Tonks sighed. "But I'm not 100% certain, yet. It's only been at least a few weeks and I haven't taken a test yet." She said quickly.
"Oh, t-that's alright then." Remus sighed, sounding relieved. "It might be nothing."
"You sound happy. Why?" Tonks asked
"Tonks, if you are pregnant, our child could be infected like me. Transformation is horribly painful. I hid the pain from you so you didn't have to hear it, but a child should never have to go through what I do." Remus said
"But it might not be infected. It could be fine." Tonks said. "Don't you see, this is good"
"What's good about this? Our child could be a werewolf like me. Shunned by society because of a condition." Remus yelled. "It's almost certain that our son or daughter if you are pregnant will be a werewolf because if you aren't bitten, it also mostly genetic. Hopefully it won't be a full werewolf, but there will be a small percentage that is!"
"Why are you yelling at me?" Tonks cried, tears forming. "It's not just my fault I'm possibly pregnant, it's ours. Takes two make a kid Remus."
"I know. I just don't ever want to put a child through what I do. And again, I'm too dangerous to be father. I could attack it, or even kill it. I don't want to do that, not again."
"You are only as dangerous as you think you aren't." Tonks said sympathetically. "Tell you what, I'll get tested later today. That could put our minds to rest. But remember, the fault is mostly your's for getting me pregnant."
Remus smiled and sighed. He yawned loudly before leaning back on the chair. Tonks rested her head in her hand.
"Are you going to go back to bed and sleep some more, or finish watching whatever you were watching?" Remus asked, calming down.
"No idea. I'm not exactly tired, but the film has already finished." Tonks sighed. "I'll probably just stay down here."
"I'll join you." Remus said, smiling.
Tonks nodded and stood up. She walked out of the kitchen and into the living room. Sitting back on the sofa, she flicked through the channels, seeing if anything good was on. A few good looking movies were on but she waited for Remus to join her before she properly decided. Remus sat close to her and pulled her close with one arm. Tonks liked the heat radiating off of his body, and snuggled closer. Remus kissed her head softly before turning his attention to the TV.
They chose to watch 'Scary Movie 3'. Although, they didn't watch much of it because they fell asleep about half an hours after they started watching.
They slept until just after eleven. Both woke up at almost the exact same time.
"Morning, again." Tonks yawned, her pink hair messier than it was earlier.
"Morning." Remus groaned as he stretched. Tonks leaned over and kissed his lips softly before pulling away.
Remus stood up unsteadily and trudged through to the kitchen, Tonks following. They each had a piece of toast before showering and getting dressed.
"Right. I'm off." Tonks announced. It was quarter past one. Remus was reading in the living room. His head turned to Tonks as she spoke from the doorway.
"Where?" He asked
"Muggle chemist. Buying a pregnancy test or two. Remember?" She replied
Snapping his book shut, Remus stood up. "I'm going with you. We shouldn't be going out alone." He said
Tonks sighed but nodded. "Would probably be best. I'll wait down here."
Remus hurried out of the room. He went upstairs to collect his wand, a jacket and some extra money. Hurrying into the living room he saw Tonks staring out of the window.
"Ready?" He asked
"Ready." She replied
Remus took Tonks's hand as they left the house and made their way to the the nearest muggle chemist. It wasn't too far away and they could do with a walk. They'd been inside for too long.
"Are you worried?" Tonks asked as they walked down the pavement.
"A little." Remus replied honestly.
"I am too." Tonks said. "Never thought I'd have a child."
"Neither did I. But, we don't know for certain if you're pregnant so..."
"Yeah, just trying to make conversation." Tonks sighed. She rested her head on his shoulder as they walked. Talk was minimal, there wasn't that much to say.
Tonks went into the shop first and headed for the women's isle, leaving Remus to awkwardly look around. He gave up and joined Tonks at the counter.
"Got it?" He asked
"Yeah. Three." Tonks replied, taking the bag.
"Three? Why three?" Remus asked
"So it's more accurate." Tonks replied. "Wait! I forgot something!" Tonks hurried back inside. She returned a few minutes later with a large bottle of Cream Soda.
"What's that for?" Remus asked, seeing the size of bottle.
"I well I'm going to need to piss a lot so I'll need to drink a lot." Tonks replied.
Remus nodded before walking off down the road again. Tonks was the first home. She'd been drinking from the bottle all the way home and desperately needed to pee. Racing up the stairs with a test in hand, she went to the bathroom. She came out ten minutes later, test in hand. Remus had been waiting in the hall the entire time. When the door opened he stood up.
"Negative." Tonks sighed unhappily. But Remus's face lit up. She wasn't pregnant! But he couldn't help but notice how unhappy she looked.
"These aren't always accurate though, that's why I bought three. I'll do the other two later. In a few hours." Tonks said. She walked to their room and threw the test in the bin.
As their bed time came around, Tonks did the third and final test. As she waited for the results, butterflies formed in her stomach. She was scared but excited. She could be a mother. Something she'd always secretly wanted to be. And there, in her hand, was the final answer.
"Remus!" Tonks called as she left the bathroom, holding the three tests. She'd taken the one straight back out of the bin after she threw it in. Remus came up the stairs. He hurried when he saw the things in her hand.
"Well, what do the other two say?" He asked anxiously. Tonks hadn't told him the the result of the second one, yet. Tonks hesitated and looked at the answers over again, making sure it wasn't a lie.
"Positive. Two positives, one negative. I-I'm pregnant." Tonks said, showing him the two plus sign on the test screen. Remus's face fell. That was it, they'd be parents to an infected child. But seeing Tonks's happy face, he tried to smile, it worked but, you could see the hesitation in it.
"Congratulations to us I guess." He said happily.
"Yeah. We are going to be a family." Tonks said. Her smile grew wider at the thought. Remus stepped forward and hugged her tightly, kissing her head.
"Three of us." Remus said. Tonks nodded. She stood on tip-toes and kissed him.
"Three of us." She agreed. Tonks sighed before heading to the bedroom. She was already ready for bed so she just collapsed onto the covers. Nine long months lay ahead, for her, for Remus, for the Wizarding World. But as long as they were together, she'd be alright. Remus lay next her on the covers, playing with her hair. Tonks giggled before rolling onto his bare chest.
"I love you." Tonks whispered, her lips brushing against Remus's, teasing him.
"I love you too." Remus replied. He closed the small gap between them and kissed her passionately. His fingers fiddle with her hair again, Tonks rested a hand on his chest. The night passed on to early morning, and they were still together.
But both wondered, for how much longer.....?
