I rant about the Werewolf genre
Okay. This might be a bit more of a tame rant, but it's probably going to be kinda long, so prepare to read quite a bit.
So the thing about werewolf stories is that they have a bit of a rep. People only really know them for the possesive bad boy alpha mates, and the horrible abuse stories that are brushed off as nothing, as just part of the recommended section that you don't really care about.
But the thing that I always say about clichés can also be applied here: any reused plot can be interesting if you spin it in the right way.
Here I'm going to be using a werewolf book called Catching Genesis, which I really recommend you read if you're looking for a good read. Also, if you plan on reading it, then this probably warrants a SPOILER ALERT.
So the book starts off as so many others do, with the main character (Genesis) turning 18. This is a particularly momentous occasion, because this is when she can first feel an attraction to her mate.
So Genesis gets to school, blah blah blah, and oh, look! There's our bad boy alpha stereotype, Logan Carrington. He's a grade-a douchebag, and Genesis doesn't really like him. Surprise, surprise.
And then we get introduced to some really great characters, the lycan pack. They are like werewolves, but Genesis tells us that they're the children of the moon goddess, and that they're pretty much werewolves but better. They can run faster, jump higher, all that good stuff.
Also, they're hot.
Because of course they are.
So blah, blah, Logan turns out to be Genesis's mate, blah blah, rejection, blah, blah, revenge scheme.
Sounds typical, right?
I don't want to spoil it all, and you should really read the book, but by the end of the book, people in the comments were saying "RIP Logan. That one douche that nobody really remembered when all the cool stuff started happening."
Okay, SPOILER ALERT OVER.
So the point I'm trying to make is that even though the author used a really common werewolf trope, she spun it around and made a completely new story with lovable and hateable characters, a genuinely good plot, great romantic scenes, and- yeah, I really like this book.
So in conclusion, I might be writing a serious werewolf story sometime, and I'll try to make it good.
