Chapter 30

Lucy

Lucy was in a state of shock as she stared at her daughter who laid in a hospital bed hooked up to machines. There were people trying to talk to her, but she couldn't hear them over her thoughts. People came in and out of the room but Lucy was too in her head to even remember who they were. Someone had to grab her arm to finally snap her out of it.

"Lucy," repeated Sheriff Lawrence. "We need to talk outside."

Lucy stared at Sheriff Lawrence. "I can't leave my daughter."

"Let me worry about your daughter," said Molly who was at the doorway. "I'm going to be at your daughter's side at all times. Go with Sheriff Lawrence."

"But Mr. Souza," said Lucy before hesitating.

Molly grabbed her hands. "Your daughter is all that matters to me right now. She is my only priority. I promise you that."

"Thanks, and I'm sorry," said Lucy, not knowing what else to say.

"Go," said Molly. "I won't leave your daughter's side until you get back."

Sheriff Lawrence led Lucy around the corner of the hall where there was no one to listen to them. "I'm so sorry, Lucy," said Sheriff Lawrence. "All the force is searching for whoever attacked Doramis."

Lucy didn't say anything as she thought about the incident.

"Lucy, I'm sorry for asking this, but do you have any idea who could have done this?" asked Sheriff Lawrence.

"Huh?" said Lucy, trying to concentrate on the person in front of her.

"Who do you think could have done this?" asked Sheriff Lawrence.

"I don't know," said Lucy. "Should I know? Do you think the person who attacked Dori did it to get to me?"

"Slow down, Lucy. At the moment, we don't have much information. I'm hoping you can help me out so we can get whoever this to your daughter as soon as possible."

"Larry," said Lucy as her sight went to the floor. "I don't know what's going on here. I think I might have screwed up."

"What do you mean?"

"I have no idea what's going on here. I have no idea if Dori was attacked because someone is trying to get to me or if this has something to do with something completely different." Lucy seemed like she was about to faint. "I think I need to sit."

Sheriff Lawrence grabbed Lucy by the arm to help her stay on her feet. "Come on, follow me." He led her to the nurse's station and let her sit down on one of the chairs. "Do you want me to get you some water?"

"Sure," answered Lucy as she laid her head on the nurse's station. Sheriff Lawrence rubbed her back as Deputy Tirado approached.

"Is she alright?" asked Deputy Tirado.

"Get her some water," said Sheriff Lawrence.

Lucy looked up and saw as Deputy Tirado left to get some water. Little Robbie was also with him, but he stayed behind. "Robbie," said Lucy.

"Hello Ms. Baez," said Robbie as he took a step forward. "I'm so very sorry for what happened to Doramis."

"Robbie," she repeated. "Do you have any idea who could have done this?"

"No ma'am," answered Robbie. "I assumed it had to be the person who shot at you."

Lucy looked up at Sheriff Lawrence who was staring back at her. "Is that who you think did this to Doramis?" she asked him. "Have you even written a report on that incident?"

Sheriff Lawrence was taken aback by the question. "I know you're angry -"

"Angry!" exclaimed Lucy. "Angry isn't even close to what I'm feeling right now." Lucy stood up. "Someone tried to kill my daughter. They might have succeeded."

"What?" said Robbie, who seemed like he was about to cry. "Dori is dying?"

Lucy looked at Robbie and that broke her. Lucy started crying and embraced Robbie in a hug. The two of them were crying as they embraced each other.

Deputy Tirado approached them with a bottle of water. He was surprised to see his son and Lucy crying in each other's arms.

Sheriff Lawrence went over to Deputy Tirado and put out his hand to take the water. "I'll take that," said Sheriff Lawrence. Deputy Tirado handed him the water as he stared at his son. "Have the nurses told you anything?"

"They're not sure if Mr. Souza died of natural causes or if he was killed," said Deputy Tirado.

Lucy pulled away from Robbie. "Of course he was murdered," said Lucy. "That's why Dori was brutally attacked. She saw what happened."

"Please calm down," said Deputy Tirado and instantly Sheriff Lawrence knew he messed up.

"He didn't mean that," said Sheriff Lawrence before Lucy blew up on Deputy Tirado. "What he meant to say was to not be so loud."

"You don't want me to be too loud?" she said, her voice getting louder with every word.

Sheriff Lawrence walked right in front of Lucy. "Of course we know that Mr. Souza was murdered last night, and we have a killer in our town, but we have to be really careful here."

"Careful?" yelled Lucy. "Why should we be careful about this? We should be hunting this person down like we did the bears last night."

Sheriff Lawrence grabbed her hands. "If we do that, we risk creating a mob and getting an innocent person killed. You and I know those bears didn't deserve to get killed."

Lucy stopped. "But we have a killer among us," she whispered.

Jordana walked in and stopped when she saw the intimate moment between Lucy and Sheriff Lawrence. "Am I interrupting something?" asked Jordana.

Lucy and Sheriff Lawrence pulled away.

"I'm surprised you're still in town," said Deputy Tirado.

"I'm surprised you care," snapped Jordana.

"I didn't say I did."

"Yet it seems like you do."

"Maybe it's because things didn't start to go bad until you arrived in town," said Deputy Tirado.

"Roberto!" snapped Sheriff Lawrence. "Outside, this instant." Sheriff Lawrence led the way out while Deputy Tirado followed.

Jordana went over to Lucy while Robbie watched them. "I'm sorry," said Jordana. "I don't know what else to say."

"You need to help me," said Lucy. "You need to help me find out who did this."

"I will," said Jordana. "I promise I'm not leaving until we figure this out."
