Chapter 29

Doramis

It was the night of the hunt and Doramis was left home to rest. She laid in her bed and stared up at her ceiling. She pulled out her cellphone and held it above her head. She pulled up Ken's contact and gave him a call.

"Hello," said Ken.

"Hey Kenny."

"Hey Dori. How are you holding up?"

"Arm is still broken, but I'm okay."

"That's good. Not that your arm is broken, but that you're okay. That's what's good."

"Thanks, and I know what you meant. Did your mothers also go on the hunt?"

"One of them did," answered Ken. "Paloma stayed home with me."

"So Anita went to the hunt," said Doramis. "I'm a little surprised she went."

"I was too, but she mentioned that someone from the family should be there."

"I wonder if that's why my mother went," said Lucy.

"I'm surprised she went as well, but she did go to the first one too, right?"

"Yes and got shot at."

"Are you worried about her?"

"Not really. My mom can take care of herself, and she's probably more prepared this time. That might be the actual reason why she went, to see if her shooter tries it again."

"Isn't that dangerous?"

"Yes, but I'm sure my mom has a plan. If someone goes after her tonight, she's going to get them."

"I guess that's good to know," said Ken. "What did you call me for?"

"I don't know. I guess I needed to talk to someone."

"It's okay. What do you want to talk about?"

"I just feel so bad about what happened to Mr. Souza," said Doramis. "He didn't deserve what happened to him."

"Yeah, he didn't."

"I feel so stupid for investigating him. I should have just asked mom about him. What we did was so stupid."

"Mr. Souza isn't dead you know," said Ken. "I'm sure he's going to be alright."

"We don't know that. He might not make it."

"Kenny," called a female voice from the other side of the phone. "Are you still up?"

"I have to go," whispered Ken. "What happened to Mr. Souza wasn't your fault. It was nobody's fault. A wild animal attacked him. There was nothing we could do."

"Kenny," said the female voice and Doramis heard a knock.

"Good bye and good night." Ken hung up the phone.

Doramis stared at her phone, not knowing what to do. She dropped her phone on the bed and let out an exasperated sigh. "I'm so bored," she yelled to herself.

She got out of bed and pulled out clothes from her closet. She got dressed, grabbed her phone and went downstairs. She grabbed her car keys and went outside. She took in the cold air before getting inside of her car.

"My mom is going to kill me if she knows I left," she said to herself. She pulled out her cellphone and Ken's contact. She typed on her phone Going to the hospital. Let's hope my mother doesn't find out. She sent the text and turned the car on.

Doramis arrived at the hospital within fifteen minutes. She felt her phone vibrate as she got out of her car. She grabbed her cellphone and saw she had a text from Ken. Why? Aren't you punished?

I am but my mom is not home and I'll probably won't get this chance again, she texted back.

Doramis went inside the hospital which she found extremely quiet. Almost all of the lights were off and not many people work in the small hospital to begin with. She imagined there would be at least two nurses working, but hasn't seen them as of yet as she walked through the halls. Her phone vibrated again.

Why are you in the hospital? asked Ken.

To apologize to Mr. Souza, wrote Doramis.

Doramis was almost at Mr. Souza's room when her phone vibrated again.

Why now? Do that during the day like a normal person, wrote Ken.

I want some privacy when I do this. This is the only way I can do it. Doramis shoved the phone back into her pocket.

Doramis was about to open Mr. Souza's door when it opened on its own. It was pitch black and Doramis couldn't see a thing. It took a second to realize there was someone standing in front of her.

"Sorry," said Doramis as a reaction when she took a step back.

Doramis was hit so hard in the face as she fell back. Whoever was standing in front of her had just struck her. She laid on the floor in pain and it still hadn't registered to her she was just hit by someone.

She looked back and saw a dark silhouette looking back at Mr. Souza who was laying in his bed.

"You're not supposed to be here," whispered a voice.

"What's going on?" said Doramis as she tried to get back up.

The person returned their attention to her and kicked her in the stomach. Doramis rolled on the floor in pain. She was in so much pain she couldn't even scream.

"I'm sorry," said the dark silhouette.

The person kicked her again and Doramis was struggling to stay conscious. The person mounted her and began to punch. They repeated this three more times before Doramis finally passed out.
