4. Honeypup

Gouenji, Kidou & Kira stood facing the back gate of Honeypup's villa. The balcony was in their plain view.

"So this is Honeypup's place. " Kidou announced.

"With a name like that, she never had any options but to train dogs. " Kira remarked confidently. The two men slowly turned towards her with ridicule.

"Kira, do you think her parents named her Honeypup?" Gouenji asked with earnest concern.

She fumbled when she sensed she had said something wrong.

"Sat on the front bench, did you say?" Kidou leaned over to Gouenji and whispered.

"Oh, shut up!" Gouenji was miffed, "Don't forget why we're here. "

This was enough to make Kidou focus on the mission again.

"In about five minutes Honeypup will leave for the gym at which point it will be safe to climb up this balcony and into the house. " Kidou explained, "As soon as we get there we have to fan out and look for the diary. "

They leaned against the wall, hiding and waiting for Kidou's signal. Gouenji and Kira stood beside each other on one side of the gate while Kidou stood on the other side.

"You know, " Kira began, "I'm somewhat of a dog whisperer myself. " She announced proudly.

"Oh, really?" Gouenji's interest was piqued.

"Yeah, I can befriend them easily. Sometimes easier than I can befriend humans. " She answered.

"Why do you say that?"

"Oh c'mon!" She turned to look at him in disbelief, "Like you don't remember the fact that I was mostly alone in school. " She then added quietly, "You were my only true friend. "

Before Gouenji could respond Kidou gestured for the plan to begin.

Kidou climbed up the balcony first, then Gouenji and lastly Kira. Once again Kidou had to be the one to help pull her up as Gouenji stood aside in disappointment.

"Woah!" Kira looked around the balcony and the bedroom it led into. She awed at the size and lavishness of it.

"I didn't know there was so much money in dog training. " She remarked.

"Dogs are the new children. " Kidou shrugged, "Now don't waste time! Fan out! "

They began looking for the diary starting from the balcony where he had supposedly left it. But it was not there.

"What if she has already found it?" Gouenji commented.

"Don't say that! That will end my life!" Kidou exclaimed in a hushed tone and almost knocked over a vase.

"Stop riling him up!" Kira shushed Gouenji, nervous that they would get caught.

She strolled out into the adjoining living room, still looking everywhere for it. A huff behind her startled her and she turned around to find a small dog lounging on its dog bed. Tucked under its butt was a small notebook that matched the exact description of Kidou's case diary.

Kira carefully began approaching it, whistling and clicking to ease the tension. As she got closer and closer, it continued to stare directly at her with its beady eyes.

As she tried to reach her hand over it, the dog suddenly began barking aggressively.

"Shuuya! Shuuyaaa!!" Kira screamed and ran as the little dog chased her.

As soon as she entered the bedroom again, she was pulled into the closet to hide, by Kidou.

"Where's Gouenji?" Kira whispered.

"In the opposite closet. " Kidou answered the same way, "Obviously you couldn't hide with him. "

"Who's there?" A maid came calling out apprehensively. She became even more alert when she saw the dog bark incessantly. She looked around and out through the balcony into the backyard. When she couldn't find anything, she picked up the dog and walked back downstairs.

Everyone almost fell out of their closets as they gasped for air.

"I thought you were a dog whisperer. " Gouenji commented immediately.

"I am!" Kira pressed, "But you see these little ones are not dogs, they're demons!" She exclaimed annoyedly, "They're compensating for their size with their temper. " She huffed.

"Guys, stay focused!" Kidou interrupted anxiously. Gouenji frowned at him.

"Actually, I have found your diary. " Kira said and this time she easily walked over to the dog bed and picked it up.

"Oh, thank God! " Kidou took a deep sigh in relief. He turned over the pages and even though the edges were gnawed on a little bit, most of the content was intact.

"Thank you so much Kira, you saved me." Kidou exclaimed and she smiled in response.

They made their way back to the shop and in the evening Gouenji and Kira returned home together. On the way back, Gouenji suddenly remembered,

"Back there, you called me by my name!" He commented.

Kira was immediately flushed as she remembered it, "Oh I guess I did! I'm sorry if I offended you, I had no right..."

"No, no, it's alright. " Gouenji immediately cut her off, "I could get used to that. " He muttered.

Kira heard him and while she didn't respond, she couldn't help but smile.

...

Two days later Kidou was back at the shop asking for Gouenji again.

"New case, new reward. " He let him know, "Let's go. "

However, Gouenji gave him the cold shoulder,

"I'm busy. " He said as he took out his phone and began scrolling.

"You're lying!" Kidou exclaimed.

"I have pies in the oven. " Gouenji said.

"Don't worry I took them out. " Endou answered as he walked by.

"Well, I don't feel like going anywhere. " Gouenji continued.

"What's the matter with you?" Kidou was greatly confused.

Gouenji didn't respond instead just sulked and frowned.

"Okay, you're mad at me. But why?" Kidou sighed.

Gouenji hesitated to say because deep down he knew he was being unreasonable. But now it was too late so he maintained his fervour.

"Back at Honeypup's house, you didn't have to pull Kira into the closet. She could have hid herself elsewhere. " He turned towards Kidou and frowned.

"Oh my God!! Are you serious??" Kidou screamed.

Endou and Kira were both alerted by his yelling. Gouenji caught his head between his hands and looked down.

"What's going on?" Endou asked.

Kidou glared at Gouenji as if to threaten to spill everything. Gouenji glanced up and shook his head lightly, pleading for him to let it go.

"Nothing Endou. " He finally said. Endou shrugged and resumed his task.

"You know I almost wanted to tell him everything after what you have just said but I didn't for everything you've done for me. Kidou rebuked Gouenji, "How can you even think that?"

"I'm just going crazy! " Gouenji exclaimed in frustration. He still kept his voice low.

"Evidently!" Kidou retorted. He paused to stare at him for a moment and then added, "I just never pegged you for the jealous type. " He chuckled mischievously.

"And this is all before you have even confessed your feelings to her. " He continued, "When are you going to do that?"

"I'm... I'm getting to that. " Gouenji said evasively.

"Do it anytime before you lose your sanity. " Kidou commented, "Now come with me. "

"Leave me alone, man. " Gouenji sulked and put his head down on his arms on the table.

Kidou rolled his eyes in exasperation and walked away.
