Chapter 7
The next couple of days were filled with filming for the boys and relaxation for Andrew and Katia. While the boys were shooting, Katia and Andrew would lay out by the pool or go to the different beaches. During the evening, they'd have dinner with the boys and the rest of the cast. Eleanor and Andrew had planned to have dinner later that night.
"So...where are you going to take Eleanor for dinner?" Katia asked while they waited for the elevator.
"I'm not sure yet...I guess we'll decide later."
"Ah...spontaneous...that's always a plus." Katia smiled.
Shooting had ended early that day and George had called Katia to see if they wanted to meet them to get some sun.
When they walked out, they saw tables of food and drinks.
"Aww...I wish we hadn't just eaten." Andrew said looking at all the food.
"I know...everything looks so good. Are you thirsty though?" she smiled.
"Always..." Andrew said as he and Katia walked over to the bar.
Shortly after, they saw the boys piling on the food on their plates.
Katia laughed. "Looks like all that shooting does wonders for their appetite."
"Kat...I don't think it's the filming." Andrew laughed.
"What do you mean?"
"It's all the pot they smoke."
Katia looked blankly at Andrew.
"Oh come on! You had to have known about the pot!" Andrew exclaimed.
"No...I know they smoke..."
"Marijuana typically increases a person's appetite, Kat." Andrew explained.
"Oh...well that explains why at dinner their stomachs are like bottomless pits!" Katia laughed.
"Are you not eating?" Ringo called out from the table where the boys had settled.
"We just ate at the hotel restaurant!" Katia responded. "We're going swimming!" she waved at all four Beatles.
The waves were calm and the weather was beautiful. Katia took off her beach dress to reveal a red polka dotted bikini.
"Is that new?' Andrew asked as he took off his shirt.
"Yeah...I bought it yesterday...you like it?"
"Red is definitely your color." he smiled.
"Are you coming?" Katia asked as she put her foot in the water. "The water is so nice."
"Of course...isn't that what we're here for?"
Katia and Andrew swam in the ocean for about twenty minutes and then laid out on the shoreline; the waves slowly crashing into them.
"I think I'm going to make myself scarce." Katia smiled as she and Andrew saw Eleanor approaching them. "I'll be at the hotel pool. You two have fun." she winked at him.
"Hi Eleanor!" Katia said as she passed her by.
As Katia walked to the hotel pool, she casually looked around to see if she could spot Paul, but instead almost bumped into John.
"Oh...sorry John." she laughed.
"Where are you running off to?" John asked.
Katia couldn't help but feel John's eyes on her. She hadn't bothered to put on her beach dress when she left Andrew.
"Just heading to the pool." she replied. "Do you want to come?"
"Oh no...I have somewhere to be." he winked.
"Oh okay...So I'll see you later, then." Katia started walking off.
"Wait! Kat...I had been meaning to ask you something."
"About?"
"What happened between you and Paul that first night we were here?"
"What do you mean?" Katia pretended not to know what he was talking about.
"When you two were dancing... anybody who saw it could see the sexual tension between the two of you."
Katia laughed nervously. "Sexual tension?...oh come off it, John. Paul and I had as much sexual tension between us...as you and I have right now!"
"Kat...with that little red bikini, you could drive any man crazy...in fact, with every second I look at you, the sexual tension between us rises."
"Very funny." she replied. She could feel herself blushing and thought it better to leave before it became evident to John. "Have a good time, John." she smiled and continued towards the pool.
"You never answered my question!" he called out to her.
"The answer is nothing!" she replied without looking back.
When Katia got to the pool, there wasn't anybody there. Apparently, everyone preferred the ocean to the pool. She laid back on a pool lounger to take in the sun. Fifteen minutes in the sun had Katia realizing why people preferred the beach. At least at the beach she could lay in the sun and have the water cool her down. She got into the pool and swam to the deep end and then swam back around to the shallow end. When she came back up, she saw Paul standing near her lounger.
"Hi." she smiled as she ran her hands through her wet hair.
"Hi...you mind if I join you?"
"No. Of course not."
Paul took off his shirt and stepped into the pool.
"It's a bit colder than I thought." Paul laughed as he slowly got in.
"You should have laid out in the sun for a full fifteen minutes before getting it...then you would have thought it was the perfect temperature." she smiled.
"How've you been?" Paul asked before swimming over to Katia.
"Oh!" Katia laughed as Paul popped up right in front of her.
"We haven't really talked much the last couple of days." Paul said.
"You guys have been busy filming."
"Yeah...what have you been doing?"
"Oh you know...pretty much what you see me doing now." she laughed. "...with the occasional eating and shopping."
"Shopping...like buying this little number?" Paul said as he took one of her bikini straps between his fingers.
"Ummm...yeah. I got it yesterday." she replied.
"I like it..." Paul said releasing the strap.
"Thanks. So...uhhh...how's the movie coming along?" Katia asked trying to change the subject.
"It's going great." Paul responded, but didn't expand on it.
"Good...good...that's really good." Katia babbled.
"Kat...why are you so nervous around me?" Paul asked.
"I'm not nervous."
Paul chuckled. "You're not mad, upset, jealous or nervous with me."
"If you're going to start with me again..." Katia said as she began walking towards the pool steps.
"No...Kat, wait!" Paul said as he held onto the side of the pool and blocked Katia from leaving. "I was just teasing."
Katia turned her body towards him, but wouldn't look at him.
"See...this is what I mean. Why won't you even look at me?"
Katia bit her lip. She knew exactly why she couldn't look at Paul.
"Kat..." Katia felt Paul softly lift her chin and she found herself looking into Paul's eyes. She was breathing fast and Paul took notice of it. He began leaning in and before Katia could stop him, Paul was kissing her. Not only did Katia respond to his kiss, but she reached up to stroke the nape of his neck. Paul immediately pulled Katia closer and pressed himself against her. It was then that Katia realized what was going on and abruptly pulled away. She looked at Paul wide eyed; they were both breathing hard.
"Kat..." Paul finally spoke.
"This can't happen...you have a girlfriend. We can't do this." Katia began to panic.
"Kat....calm down."
"No...I gotta go." Katia hurried out of the pool.
"Kat!" Paul called out to her.
"Just...forget this ever happened, okay?" she said as she began putting on her beach dress. "We're just friends, Paul..."
"Kat...you can't just walk away from this!" Paul said as he got out of the pool.
"I'm sorry...I gotta go." Katia said with tears in her eyes.
Paul cursed to himself as he saw Katia disappear into the hotel.
Katia waited for the elevator impatiently and she wiped the tears from her face. She didn't want Paul to catch up to her. She wasn't ready to talk to him again after what had just happened. When the doors opened, she quickly tried to get on, not expecting to bump into Neil and Mal who were coming out.
Hi." Kat said as she walked into the elevator.
"Kat...are you alright?" Neil asked noticing her puffy red eyes.
"I'm fine." Katia said managing to smile slightly just before the elevator doors closed.
As soon as Katia opened her room door, she felt the tears run down her cheek again..
"Oh my God." she said as she sat down on the bed. She grabbed a pillow and hugged it. "Why did I let him kiss me." she said to herself.
That kiss would surely open up Pandora's Box. How could she deny to Paul that she had feelings for him after that? She was going to have to...one way or another she was going to have to convince Paul that the kiss didn't mean anything. But how could she convince him of that when to her, it had meant everything. When she kissed him, all of the memories from Liverpool rushed in. Everything. Not only of their romance, but of her life there...of her dad...
Suddenly, Kat heard a knock on the door. She gasped. She didn't want to talk to Paul. It was the last person she wanted to see.
"Kat...open up...it's Andrew." she heard him say after knocking again.
Katia quickly got up and went to the door. She opened it and saw Andrew standing there.
"Are you okay? Neil told me he had seen you getting on the elevator. He said it looked like you had been crying. What happened?" he said coming into the room and closing the door behind him.
"We kissed. Paul and I kissed." Katia said walking back to the bed.
"Just now?" Andrew asked following her and sitting next to her.
"Yes...in the pool."
Andrew cleared his throat. "Ummm...how'd it happen?" he asked.
"I don't know...it was...he asked me why I was nervous around him. I denied it and he questioned why I wouldn't even look at him. So....I looked at him...and then...we kissed. Oh Andrew! This is terrible! I'm such an idiot!" Katia replied as tears fell down her cheek
"Calm down...it's...not as bad as you think." Andrew said trying to comfort Katia. "And you're not an idiot...you just let your feelings control your actions." he said wiping her tears. "It happens to everyone..." he said smiling at her.
"Has something like this ever happened to you?" Katia asked. It was then that she realized she didn't know much about Andrew's past love life.
"You mean kissing a Beatle and freaking out about it? No...never." he joked.
That made Katia laugh which was Andrew's intention.
"You know what I mean..." Katia stated.
"All I can say is that when it comes to controlling your feelings, some days are better than others."
"That's for sure." Katia said taking a deep breathe. "I'll be fine. I just needed to get away from Paul."
Andrew looked sweetly at Katia. "I don't like to see you cry."
Katia sniffed and cleared her throat. "I'm fine...I'll be fine." she said smiling at Andrew. "Besides...you need to get back to Eleanor...did you guys decide where you're going to go tonight?"
"Not yet...Are you sure you don't want to come with us?"
Katia laughed. "Now why would I go with you and Eleanor on a date?"
"It's not a date, Kat. We're just going to get something to eat." Andrew clarified.
"That's a date!" Katia pressed.
"Well if that's what constitutes a date, you and I have been on many dates since we met each other." he smiled.
Katia smiled back. "Go...enjoy yourself. Have fun."
"What are you going to do tonight?"
"I think I'll just take a long hot bath and then head to bed. Don't really feel like doing much else."
"Well...alright...but if you change your mind, we'll be down at the beach. We probably won't leave for another couple of hours...in case you want to join us."
"I appreciate the offer...but I think I'm going to call it an early evening."
After Andrew left, Katia did just as he had told him she would do. She took a long hot bath and slipped into bed. After watching a documentary on TV, she switched it off and went to bed. She heard Eleanor come in later that night, but didn't bother looking to see what time it was.
Early the next morning, she heard a knock on the door. She looked over at Eleanor and she saw she was still asleep. She quickly went to the door and opened it slightly. She was surprised to see Mal standing outside.
"Good morning. " Kat said.
"I'm sorry to come knocking so early...but the boys wanted me to tell you they're going to go wake up George...and they wanted you to come too."
"Wake up George?" Katia asked confused.
"For his birthday?" Mal explained.
"Oh shit! I completely forgot today was the 25th!" Katia gasped.
"No worries, Kat...shall I wait for you?"
"Yes...give me two minutes, Mal...let me just change really quick."
Mal nodded and told her he'd wait for her out in the hall. Katia changed into a pair of jeans and top. She quickly washed her face, brushed her teeth and put her hair in a ponytail.
"This'll have to do." she said to herself as she looked in the mirror. She quietly walked out of the bathroom, careful to not make noise so she wouldn't wake up Eleanor.
"Ready." Kat said as she closed the hotel room and walked up to Mal.
"Great. The boys are in Paul and Ringo's room." he said as Katia followed him. When they got there, the three of them were waiting for them.
"Looks like she made it after all." John smiled when he saw Kat come in.
"Of course." she said as she greeted everyone.
"Let's go then." Ringo said.
Katia avoided direct eye contact with Paul. She still wasn't sure what she was going to say next time they had the opportunity to talk in private, but for now, she was going to celebrate George. As they walked down the hall, she saw John had a small wrapped box in his hand.
"Is that for George?" Kat asked.
"Yeah...it's from all three of us." he smiled as he exchanged looks with Ringo and Paul. "What did you get him, Kat?" John asked.
"I don't have anything for him...how about writing my name on that gift too?" Kat smiled sweetly.
All three Beatles laughed. "Kat...you don't want to be associated with this gift, believe me." Paul said.
"Why...what is it?"
"You'll find out soon enough." John said as they reached the hotel room. John took out his key and opened the door. George was still asleep in bed. John began pulling out something out of his pocket and began handing them out. When he handed one to Katia, she realized it was a kazoo.
"On the count of three...Happy Birthday!" he whispered.
John counted off and they all proceeded to play their very own version of Happy Birthday on the kazoos. As soon as they began playing, George jumped and turned to face them. His confusion quickly turned into laughter as he saw them all standing in his room.
"Happy Birthday George!" everyone yelled as the song ended.
"Amazing rendition of a classic." George laughed. "Thank you!"
"Anything for the birthday boy!" Ringo said.
George got out of bed and everyone went over to hug him.
"Well I can honestly say I've never awoken to a kazoo playing band before. What a way to start a birthday."
"Well how about some prezzies?" John asked.
"Alright..." George smiled.
"Kat...why don't you go first?" John said.
Kat shot John a look. He knew very well she didn't have a gift for George and he purposely put her on the spot.
"Ummm...I don't really have anything to give you, George." she said embarrassed.
George chuckled. "Don't worry about it, Kat..."
"Oh come on, Kat...you can at least give the lad a good ol' fashion birthday kiss." John persisted.
"Yeah...I could do that." Kat said as she walked up to George and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"You call that a kiss??" John laughed. "I know you can do better than that! I've seen you do better than that!"
Katia turned to look at John. Had he seen her and Paul yesterday or was he referring to when she and Paul were together in Liverpool?
"Don't listen to him." George smiled. "You don't have to do anything."
"At least make it up to him since you didn't get him a gift." John pushed.
Katia looked at John, Paul and Ringo who were all laughing.
"She won't do it." John said to the others as he continued laughing.
"You don't think I'll do it?" Katia remarked.
"Of course you won't do it, Kat." John answered with confidence.
Kat looked at George and he smiled at her. Without thinking about it, she walked up to George again and this time kissed him on the lips. She immediately heard all three Beatles laughing and shouting words of encouragement to George. To her surprise, George responded by not only placing his hands on her hips, but by sliding his tongue in Katia's mouth. Katia reciprocated for a few seconds and then pulled away.
"Happy Birthday." she said with a smile. She turned around and looked at all three Beatles.
"Hm! Guess Lennon was wrong after all!" she boasted.
You may have given him something more than just a kiss, Kat!" John howled.
Katia knew exactly what John meant with that comment and stifled a laugh, a bit embarrassed. She didn't look at George, but instead glanced over at Paul. To her surprise, he didn't seem a bit jealous of the fact that she had just kissed George. After everything he had said to her about Andrew, she would have thought he'd have more of a hostile reaction to watching her kiss another guy, but it was the opposite. He was laughing and teasing George just as the others.
"Looks like you might need this sooner than later!" John said throwing the small box in George's direction. He opened it and the room filled with more laughter.
"A box of condoms?" Katia smiled. "Really?"
"He's going to need it at his party tonight." John countered.
"Told you, you didn't want to write your name on that gift!" Paul winked.
