Chapter 6

A little past 7am, Mal phoned Katia and Andrew's room to let them know he was downstairs waiting for them at the lobby. He led them to a limousine that was waiting for them outside of the hotel. When they opened the door, they found all four Beatles inside.

"Hi...I didn't realize you guys were coming. I thought we were meeting you at the airport."

"Change of plans, love." Ringo replied.

There was no big talk or anything on the way to the airport. As we approached the airport, however, a crowd drew near. The boys would be getting into another car that would take them directly to the airplane. "Brian will meet you guys on the plane. " Neil said to them; all four of them nodded.

"You stay close to me." Neil said referring to Andrew and Katia once the boys were in the other car.

Getting to the plane, even with Neil, proved to be a struggle. Once they were out of the car, both Andrew and Katia got stopped and pushed back into the crowd of fans that were being blocked by the police. Luckily Neil noticed their absence and went looking for them. They eventually found each other and finally made it to the plane.

When they got to the plane, the guys were already seated and were serving themselves drinks.

"Don't you think it's a little early for this?" Katia asked

"Care for one?" he grinned.

"Please." she smiled.

"Just keep this one. I'll pour myself another." he said handing her his drink.

"Thank you."

"What's with the drink?" Andrew inquired.

"Too early?"she replied.

"I'd say a tad bit early, yes." Andrew responded as he sat next to her and questioned her with his eyes.

"It got a bit stressful back there...that's all." Katia said taking a sip of the drink. She felt the burn of it go down her throat and realized Andrew may have been right. It was too early to be drinking on an empty stomach. She set the drink down and didn't touch it again.

The plane ride to the Bahamas went quite fast for Katia. Waking up only for meals, she slept for most of the trip. They arrived at the Bahamas in the early evening and were picked up at the airport. They would be staying at the Balmoral Club, near Cable Beach. When they arrived at the hotel, they were informed that the rest of the cast had arrived a few days earlier. There was a dinner party planned for everyone that night around 9 o'clock. The club had been reserved entirely for the cast and staff of the film, so they would have a bit more privacy and be a bit more shielded from any fans.

Shortly after their arrival, Mal began handing out room keys. Katia, who was sitting in the lobby, watched as Paul talked to Mal about something when Mal handed him his key. After their short conversation, Mal quickly went back to the reception desk and after a few minutes returned to handing out keys.

"Kat...here's your key. You'll be sharing a room with Eleanor Bron. She's one of the main characters of the movie. She's in room 244."

"Oh...uhh...thank you." Katia said taking the key. As he was walking away, Katia called him back. "Is there a reason why I won't be staying in the same room as Andrew?" she questioned a bit surprise they had separated them.

"Oh...uhhh....well..." he stumbled with his words. "...we're a bit short on rooms...and you and Eleanor are one of the few females...you understand."

"So who will Andrew be sharing a room with?"

"Clive Reed. He's the assistant director."

"Okay...thanks, Mal." Katia said somewhat skeptical.

She turned to look at Paul. He was glancing over at them, but as soon as she looked back at him he turned away. Had Paul said something to Mal? Did Paul purposely separate her from staying in the same room as Andrew? She wasn't positive, but the thought did cross her mind.

"So it looks like we won't be sharing a bed this time around." Andrew laughed as he walked over to her.

"Looks like it."

"Well let's go up to our rooms to meet our new roommates. I'm in room 262....you?"

"244."

"At least we're on the same floor."

Once they were on their floor, Andrew dropped off Katia by her room and he continued down the hall to his. Katia knocked on the door.

A brunette girl opened the door.

"Eleanor?" Katia asked.

"Yes?" she replied.

"Hi...I'm Kat...your new roommate."

"Oh." she said surprised. "Come in...I didn't realize I would be sharing a room. Not that I mind at all...I just wan't aware of it." she said as she stepped to the side so Katia could come in.

"Hmm...you weren't?"

"No."

"I guess it was a last minute change." Katia replied, now knowing for sure that Paul had said something to Mal.

The room was gorgeous. Two queen size beds, a television set, a spacious bathroom and a balcony that overlooked the beach.

"I've been sleeping on this bed." she said pointing to the bed nearest to the balcony. Katia set her bags down on the other bed.

Katia and Eleanor chatted for most of the evening and by the time 9 pm rolled around, Katia was actually kind of grateful that Mal had given her a room to share with Eleanor. She didn't really have many girlfriends and even though Andrew and the boys were great, she enjoyed having some girl talk. It was something that she had really enjoyed with Cynthia and Astrid when she lived in Liverpool and during her time at Hamburg. Because tonight's dinner was going to be on the beach and quite casual, Katia had taken a quick shower and changed into a skirt and a simple top. Eleanor had changed into something similar. Andrew had stopped by the room to escort them down a few minutes past 9pm. It was then that Katia introduced him to Eleanor.

Down at the lobby, Katia left Eleanor and Andrew chatting while she went over to where George and John were standing.

"Hi..."

"Kat...you're looking lovely as always." John said.

"Thanks John..where's everyone else?" she asked looking around to the empty lobby.

"Oh...the party is going to be out on the beach. We're just waiting for Paul and Ringo to come down."

"Oh. Okay."

"Looks like Andrew wasted no time in chatting up Eleanor." George smiled looking at Andrew and Eleanor.

Kat looked at them. "Sure looks like it. But Eleanor doesn't seem displeased by it one bit." she laughed.

John had a confused look on his face.

"What's wrong with you?" George questioned.

"Um...I thought Andrew and you were dating." John directed his comment to Katia.

"No...we're just friends." Katia repeated what she had already said many times before.

"And you knew?" John asked George.

"Yeah."

"How?"

"I asked Andrew." George replied matter-of-factly.

"When?"

"When we met him in LA."

"And how come I didn't know this?"

"You never asked." George responded.

George and Katia laughed as John took in the new information. By that time, Ringo had come down and was walking towards them.

"What's so funny?' he asked.

"Did you know that Kat and Andrew weren't dating?" John asked him.

"Yeah..."

"How did you know?"

"I asked George." he said.

"Was I the only one that didn't know?"

"Well you know now." Katia laughed.

"So shall we head out? Paul is going to come down in a little while...he was on the phone." Ringo said.

They all walked out and within a few minutes, Katia was lost in the crowd. She had been told that it would be a cast party, but by the amount of females present, she knew it wasn't simply reserved for the cast...well unless these were extras, which she highly doubted. She quickly lost sight of John, George and Ringo and when she did find them again, she refrained from going up to them; their interest was now focused on the more than a few girls who were flirting with them. Andrew and Eleanor were now chatting over drinks and Katia didn't want to interrupt their conversation.

Katia walked over to the shoreline. She could feel the mist of the water on her skin and the sound of the waves was very mesmerizing. She could hear music and chatter behind her, but the calmness of the sea had her attention. So much so, that she didn't feel Paul walking up to her.

"Kat." he said as he put his hand on her shoulder.

Katia gasped and quickly turned around to see him. "Paul...you scared me."

"I'm sorry..." he apologized. "Why are you here all alone?" he asked.

Katia looked at him and noticed there was something different about him. His pupils were dilated causing his eyes to look glassy and instead of him having that warm smile, he was staring at her with a goofy looking grin.

"Paul, are you okay?"

"Of course Kat; never been better." He laughed.

Katia stared at Paul. She had never seen him like this...not even when he had been completely smashed in Hamburg. It was something different.

"Looks like Andrew's taken a liking to Eleanor." he said looking past her.

Katia followed his gaze and then looked back at him. "Yeah...looks like your plan to have Mal keep us in separate rooms is working out for him." Katia commented.

"What are you talking about?" Paul asked.

"Are you going to deny it?" she raised an eyebrow. "I saw you talking to Mal."

"I thought you said there was nothing going on with Andrew. Does it really upset you that much that you won't be sharing a bed with him?" Paul replied.

Katia sensed a bit of jealousy in Paul's reaction, but that was not reason enough for him to talk to her that way.

"Not that it's any of your business whether I enjoy sharing a bed with Andrew or not, but I was going to bring up the single bed situation to Mal myself."

"So I just sped up the process for you." Paul smiled.

"Why? What does it matter to you whether Andrew and I sleep in the same bed?"

"I figured it'd be a bit awkward for you...especially if you're not having sex with him."

"You and I never had sex...and we slept in the same bed...was that awkward for you?" Katia questioned.

Before Paul could answer, John and George came running towards them.

"Hey Macca! We just saw Ringo and he told us you had the stuff. Come on now, hand it over."

"Eey, hold on, will ya."Paul responded.

"From the looks of it you already knocked yourself up pretty good. Weren't planning on sharing?" George asked.

"I was, don't be soft." Paul said as he began taking something that looked like a cigarette out of his shirt pocket. John stuck out his hand, but Paul didn't give it to him right away.

"Ladies first." He said. He held out the cigarette for Katia, but she didn't take it. "Still don't smoke." she smiled.

"It's not just any kind of ciggie, love. It's a joint. Take a hit, you'll like it. Trust me." John put in.

"You mean Marijuana? Is it safe?"

"Would we be offering it to you if it wasn't?" John countered.

"I guess not..."

"Go on then..."

"Uhh...you go ahead."

"You're the one that is missing out, Kat." John replied as he grabbed the joint from Paul and lit it. He took a drag and passed it to George. The joint was passed back and forth between George and John and occasionally Paul. They had almost finished it when John urged Katia to take at least one hit.

"Come on, just one hit!" John insisted.

"Well..." Katia could see all three Beatles looking at her anxiously. "Alright." she finally said.

"Now, just take a drag and hold it for as long as you can." George advised as he handed it to her.

She hesitantly took the joint and inhaled; it wasn't even a few seconds after that Katia found herself in heaps of coughs. She handed the joint back to John.

"You're just not used to it. You'll get the hang of it." Paul said

Katia didn't think she'd be trying that again. She'd never even been a fan of smoking regular tobacco and her first time trying marijuana hadn't exactly been enjoyable.

"If you'll excuse me, I have a cute blond waiting for me at the bar." George smiled.

"I'll go with...that brunette next to her seems to need some company." John laughed.

"We should head back to the party." Katia said as she started following John and George.

"Why the rush? Don't you want me to answer your question?" Paul asked taking a hold of Katia's hand.

"What question?" Kat asked confused.

"About whether it was awkward for me to sleep in the same bed as you..." Paul began. "..without us having sex."

Katia knew she had asked the question right as John and George had showed up, but somehow when the question was isolated from the original conversation, it felt a lot more intense. Katia avoided direct eye contact with Paul; she felt nervous discussing this type of thing with him when their relationship was no longer a romantic one.

"Oh..." she said softly as she pulled her hand away. "Well...was it?" she asked finally looking at him.

Paul chuckled. "No. Kat, I've never felt awkward with you...you on the other hand, seem to be feeling somewhat uncomfortable with me...or at least that's what I'm sensing. "

She had hoped it wouldn't come across, but Paul was right. It was evident as she stood there with him that she did feel a little uncomfortable and it had nothing to do with the fact that he was one of the most popular and sought after men in the music industry. Katia felt at ease with George, John and Ringo, but whenever she was alone with Paul, she felt tense and anxious. She hadn't wanted to admit it to herself, but the truth was that she still had feelings for Paul and that was the reason for her discomfort whenever she was around him.

Katia scoffed. "What are you talking about, Paul? I'm not uncomfortable around you? Why would I be?"

"That's what I'm trying to figure out."

"There's nothing to figure out." Katia replied a bit defensively. "C'mon, we should head back."

"Kat...I didn't ask Mal to put you and Andrew in separate rooms. I brought to his attention that you and Andrew weren't a couple and that putting you in a room with two beds would probably be more appropriate. Turns out the hotel didn't have any more available, so that's why he put you with Eleanor and Andrew with Clive."

"Okay..." was the only thing Katia managed to say.

Paul and Katia walked back to the party. John and George were sitting at a table with the blond and brunette and Ringo was at the bar talking with Neil and a few other people that Katia didn't know.

"You want to get a drink?" Paul asked her.

"Sure."

They hadn't even reached the bar when two petite brunettes approached Paul. Despite knowing that Paul was always polite with fans, Katia felt ignored when Paul and the girls began chatting. She walked away unnoticed and went ahead to the bar to get the drink she desperately felt she needed.

"Kat...what are you drinking?" Ringo smiled when he saw her.

"Umm...whatever you're having."

Ringo called the bartender over and asked him for a drink for Kat.

"Thanks."

"Are you enjoying yourself?"

"Of course!" she said a bit forced.

Ringo looked at her a bit skeptical and then caught sight of Paul laughing and chatting with the two girls.

"Here." he said handing her the drink. "This will make you have an even better time." he winked.

Katia took a sip of the drink and realized it was a very strong rum and coke.

"Wow...one of these and I'll be set." she laughed.

"That's the point." Ringo smiled.

Ringo introduced Katia to a few of the members of the crew and she spent the next twenty minutes talking about what scenes they planned to film. Ringo had managed to make her forget the frustration she had felt with Paul, but that was short-lived when he met her at the bar.

"Kat...there you are...why'd you run off like that?"

"Run off? I just came to get that drink you had offered about half an hour ago...before those two girls caught your attention." Katia replied.

Paul chuckled a bit. "Is that what's got you all upset?"

"I'm not upset!" Katia replied irritated. Clearly that response was not doing much for her case. "I'm not upset." she repeated with more control.

"Prove it...dance with me." Paul said extending his hand.

"Fine." Katia said taking his hand.

Despite there not being a formal dance floor, there was a group of people that had unintentionally created one. Paul led Katia to the informal dance floor. He placed his hands on her waist and she wrapped her arms around his neck. Elvis Presley's 'Love Me' began playing as they swayed to the music. Katia didn't look at Paul, instead she focused on the buttons of his blue button down shirt.

"Kat...don't be mad at me...I was just talking to those girls."

"I'm not mad...and I don't care if you talk to every girl here..." Katia replied trying to sound indifferent.

"Maybe you're not mad...but you do seem a bit jealous."

Katia finally looked at Paul and saw him smiling at her.

"Don't be so smug!" She said angrily. She pushed him away and started walking away, but Paul grabbed her hand and forcefully pulled her to him, causing Katia to almost stumble. Paul wrapped his arms around her waist to prevent her from falling.

"Let me go!" Katia said crossly trying to push away from him. The fact that Paul was laughing was making her even more angry.

"Your reaction tells me you were at least a little jealous." Paul continued laughing.

"Don't flatter yourself, Paul." Katia replied. In order to avoid a scene, Katia stopped struggling and she felt Paul's grasp loosen a little, but he still held onto her. Sam Cooke was now playing and Paul began moving to the music. Katia sighed and moved her hands to Paul's shoulders. She didn't look at him though; instead she saw Andrew looking over at them. He mouthed to her if she was okay and she slightly nodded and gave him a small smile.

"Even though you won't admit that you were jealous of those girls..."

"I-" Katia started looking up at him, but Paul interrupted her.

"I'll admit that I was jealous. Knowing you and Andrew were sleeping in the same bed made me jealous. That's why I told Mal to not give you and him a single bed."

"You really don't have a right to interfere in my relationship with Andrew...nor our sleeping arrangements." Katia replied. "Besides, you have a girlfriend...you should be focusing on that relationship."

"Can I help it if I feel jealous when I see you and him together?"

"Well you shouldn't." Kat said rationally. "You are dating Jane...you don't have a right to feel that."

"Well I do, you know."

"Well...you better stop because I can do whatever I want with whomever I want...and I don't have to answer to anyone." Katia said surprising herself at how confident she had spoken.

"I know." Paul replied softly as he dropped his hands from her waist.

"Thanks for the dance." she said leaning in and giving Paul a kiss on the cheek.

She walked over to where Andrew was sitting and took a seat next to him.

"Where's Eleanor?" Katia asked.

"Nevermind that...what was all that about with you and Paul? I was getting ready to go and tell him something."

"It wasn't that big of a deal...really."

"Kat, he was yanking you around like a fuckin' ragdoll." Andrew grew upset.

"No...it was just a misunderstanding. I appreciate your concern, but I can handle Paul...really." Kat replied trying to defuse the situation. The last thing she wanted was for Andrew to have it in for Paul.

Andrew wasn't completely convinced but Katia noticed his body language relax.

"Is this yours?" Katia asked pointing to a drink of the table.

"Yeah-go ahead."

"Thanks." Katia replied finishing off the glass.

"So what did Paul tell you?"

"He accused me of being jealous of some tarts that were talking to him."

"Were you?"

"A little, but I wasn't going to tell him that! I denied it...and then he told me that even though I didn't want to admit it, he would. And so he told me he was jealous of you and me sharing a bed."

Andrew couldn't help but laugh. "I told you...didn't I tell you...since back in LA...at that mansion." Andrew continued laughing. "And then his face in London when he walked into our hotel room to see the bed unmade!"

"Well, he's the reason we're not staying in the same room." Katia added.

"He actually asked Mal to separate us? Well played, Paul..." Andrew smiled.

"Well not exactly separate us...he just requested we have two beds." Katia smiled. "And since there were none left, they split us up."

"So what did you tell him?

"Well...that he doesn't have a right to interfere in my relationship with you...and that he has Jane and he should focus on that relationship."

"What did you really want to tell him?" Andrew leaned in and smiled.

"That I was jealous...and that my heart started racing when he told me he was jealous too...because that means he still feels something for me..." Katia replied meekly. "But it doesn't matter what I wanted to tell him...because he's with Jane, Andrew."

"Yeah but if he says he feels jealous it's because he's not completely committed to Jane."

Katia sighed. "You think he's having problems with Jane?"

"He might be...just be careful, okay? I don't want you to get hurt. Bottom line is Paul is dating Jane. That's a fact. What he feels for you right now...we can only assume that."
