Chapter 5
Katia was awoken by the phone ringing. She looked at the clock on her nightstand and read it was a little past 4 in the morning. She stumbled through the dark apartment until she reached the phone.
"Hello?" she answered half asleep.
"Hello. Kat?"
"Yes. Who is this?" she asked yawning.
"It's Paul."
"Paul? Why are you calling at 4:00 in the morning? Is something wrong?" She asked becoming aware that something might have happened if he was calling at this hour.
"Oh shit. I'm so sorry! I completely forgot about the time differences. We're in London right now. Everything's alright. I just thought I'd call since we had some free time. I guess my timing was a bit off though."
"Don't worry about it. I'm sure with all of the traveling you do, it's hard to keep up with the time zones. How is everyone?" Katia asked as she took the phone to the couch so she could sit down.
"We just came back from a photo shoot. Everyone's fine though, a little overworked, but we're doing okay. How about you? And Andrew?"
"We're both fine. Working a lot too. Waiting for this last month to pass. It seems like these last few weeks are going slower than normal. "
"That's what I was calling about. We were thinking that instead of you meeting us at the Bahamas, we could all leave from London and arrive there together. You two could fly here to London on the 17th of February and spend a few days here. We wouldn't be leaving until the 20th due to prior engagements. What do you think?"
"That would be amazing! I love the idea!"
"Great! So I'll have Brian make all the arrangements and we'll see you here in London on the 17th."
"Absolutely! I can't wait!"
"I've been looking forward to February since August!" Paul laughed.
"That makes two of us...well three of us!" Katia laughed. "Andrew can't seem to talk about much else but going to the Bahamas these past few weeks. I'm sure hell be thrilled that we'll get to go to London before going to the Bahamas."
"The weather here is a bit depressing, so I'm sure the sunny beaches will be more appealing."
"As long as I get to spend some time with you guys, the weather doesn't matter."
"Well, I'll let you get back to sleep. Sorry for the inopportune time to call, Kat."
"Again, don't worry about it. I'll talk to you next week."
"Definitely. Get some rest."
"Bye Paul. Thanks again for calling."
"Sure. Goodbye."
Katia couldn't help but smile as she hung up the phone. Visiting London was an unexpected surprise that she absolutely loved. Paul had kept his promise of calling her every week. They talked every week even if it was just for a few minutes. There was always more for Paul to tell her since his life had a lot more going on, but Katia loved hearing about it. It definitely beat reading any article about them in the magazines. Getting that call from Paul was always the highlight of her week.

"So who's supposed to be meeting us here?" Andrew asked as he and Katia walked through the London airport.
"Mal. Do you see him?"
"I'm looking for him."
Between the early wake up call in LA, the layovers and the little sleep both Kat and Andrew had gotten, they were running on empty after having finally arrived in London.
"Oh! There...I think that's him." Katia said leading Andrew.
As they got closer, Mal smiled and started walking up to them.
"Welcome! Let me help you with those." he said taking Katia's suitcase and setting it on the floor before hugging her.
"Hi, Mal! I'm so glad we finally made it!"
"I'm so glad to see you...especially without that sling."
Katia laughed. "Good as new!"
"Andrew...how are you?" he said shaking his hand.
"A bit tired, but happy to be here."
Mal quickly led them to the car. The wind was picking up and Katia was regretting having brought such a light coat. Mal told them he'd be taking them to a hotel near the studio so they could change and get some rest.
"The boys should be free this afternoon. I'm sure they'll head over to see you as soon as they can."
"Sounds great." Kat replied.
After having checked them in, Mal accompanied them to their room to see everything was taken care of. He called Brian and told him they had arrived and were now getting settled into their room.
"Thanks for everything." Katia said as he started leaving.
"Get some rest, otherwise the jet lag will do you in."
"I'm already starting to feel it." Andrew smiled.
"If you need anything, just call down to reception. See you soon."
"Will do. Thank you." Katia said as she walked Mal to the door.
Once Mal was gone, Andrew sat on the bed and began taking his shoes off.
"Looks like we'll be sharing another bed." he laughed.
"We should probably say something about the bed situation." Katia smiled. "I think Mal might intentionally be trying to get us a single bed."
"Beggars can't be choosers...isn't that what you said? I'm not having to pay for the hotel, so I'd sleep in the bathtub if I had to."
"You're lucky I don't mind sharing my bed with you." Katia winked.
"I'm going to try and get some sleep. I'm feeling a bit tired." Andrew said as he stretched out on the bed.
"I was planning on a shower and then getting some sleep."
"By all means...the bathroom is yours."
Katia took a long hot shower and dried her hair before walking back into the room. She had to push Andrew over to one side of the bed. He didn't even wake up. The truth was that the shower had relaxed her and she was looking forward to getting a few hours of sleep before the boys showed up. Andrew and Katia slept right through lunch and into the afternoon. It wasn't until she heard knocking on the door that she realized they had slept most of the day.
"Andrew! They're here!" she shook him awake.
There was another knock on the door.
"I'm coming!" she called out as she untangled herself from the covers. She looked back to see Andrew yawning and rubbing his eyes.
"I'm awake." he said only half asleep now.
Katia ran to the door and opened it. "Hi!" she said excitedly when she saw all four Beatles standing outside the room. As each Beatle walked into the room, she gave him a hug.
"Now this is so much better!" Paul, who was the last one to come in, said as he wrapped his arms around her. "No more sling!"
"I know!" Katia replied as she hugged him back. "Come in!"
Andrew was saying hi to the others as Katia closed the room.
"Did you guys get some rest?" Paul asked looking at the unmade bed.
"We did. Slept right through the day." Andrew answered. "Kat...come here for a second."
Kat walked over to him and Andrew patted her hair down.
"Bed hair?"
"Most definitely." he laughed.
"Sorry for the delay...we wanted to be here sooner, but we had a press conference and then a photo shoot. How's everything?" Paul asked as he went over to Andrew to shake his hand.
"Great! I'm really happy to see you guys. Thanks again for inviting us!" Katia responded.
"How was the flight?" Ringo asked.
"It was long." Andrew replied.
"So are you guys going to tell us what the movie is about? Why did you guys choose the Bahamas?"
"The Bahamas is only the first stop. We'll be going to Austria, we're shooting here in London too, and we're also going to the Salisbury Plain at Knighton Down, Larkhill and Wiltshire." George replied.
"How long will the entire movie take to film?" Andrew asked.
"It'll take a few months to get everything filmed." Paul replied.
"Do you guys think we could continue this conversation over a meal? I'm starving." Andrew asked.
"I was just about to ask you guys if you were hungry. I just talked to Cyn and she wants to have you over for dinner. It'll give you a chance to meet Julian too."
"Are you kidding! I'd love that! Let's go!" Kat said as she stood up.
John laughed. "I thought you'd like the idea."
Everyone piled into the car. It was a tight fit and after a few minutes in the car, John finally spoke up.
"Can anybody move over a bit?"
We're all as crammed in as you." Paul replied.
"Well we gotta do something...It's a 40 minute drive from here to the house." John continued.
There was a bunch of grumbles and everyone tried to shift, but the more they shifted, the worse it got.
"Kat, just sit on someone's lap." Paul finally said.
"Great idea!" John exclaimed.
Katia sighed and agreed. She was sitting between George and Paul.
"Do you mind?' Katia asked Paul knowing she'd feel a little more comfortable with him.
"Of course not."
Katia shifted and pushed herself onto his lap. As soon as she did, the car was filled with sighs of relief. Paul held onto Katia's waist during the ride to John's house. Although it was an innocent gesture, so Katia could keep her balance while in the car, Katia couldn't help but focus on Paul's touch.
When they arrived at John's house, Katia's jaw almost dropped. She had been amazed by the mansion in LA, but this was something else. There was a heavy sliding wooden door at the gate entrance. Katia assumed it was to keep the fans at bay. When they had driven up to the property, she had seen four girls waiting outside of the house.
"John...this is incredible." Katia said in awe as she looked through the car window.
"I'll give you a tour, if you'd like." John smiled.
"Of course!"
When they reached the house, everyone stepped out of the car.
"Hope it wasn't too uncomfortable for you." Katia said to Paul.
"Not at all." he smiled at her.
John opened the front door to an entrance hall. He called out to Cynthia, but instead of Cynthia, a housekeeper by the name of Dot answered. She informed John that Cynthia would be back shortly.
"Let's take that tour while we wait for Cyn to come back." John said to Andrew and Katia.
He took them across the hall to a large living room with black carpet, two large sofas and a marble fireplace. The other Beatles made themselves at home in the living room while Dot poured them drinks. Through the living room was a dining room, which had purple velvet wallpaper. Adjacent to the dining room towards the back of the house was a small sunroom with a yellow chaise-longue.
"This was a gift from Mimi." he smiled.
Behind the sunroom was a split-level kitchen with an abundant amount of appliances that Katia had never even seen before. They looked at one small lounge before going up the main staircase to the next floor. Here, John showed them four guest bedrooms. He pointed out two drawings he had hung that were done by Stuart.
"I have them here...for sentimental reasons, you know?" John simply said before walking out of the bedroom and taking them to the master bedroom.
Katia had heard about Stuart's untimely death, but she didn't dare ask any of the boys about the details.
John proudly showed off the master bedroom which featured a double bed with white carpets and an absolutely amazing master bathroom, complete with a sunken bathtub, shower, jacuzzi and double sinks. The last floor, which was the attic was claimed entirely by John. He had installed all of his music equipment there.
By the time John, Andrew and Katia had gotten through the tour, Cynthia and Julian had arrived.
As soon as Katia and Cynthia saw each other, they both shrieked. Katia rushed over to Cynthia and gave her a huge hug. She introduced Andrew to her and shortly after, Katia had Julian in her arms. He looked a lot like John and seemed content to be in Katia's arms.
"Children look good on you, Kat." Cynthia smiled.
"One day." she casually commented, still admiring Julian.
Cynthia and Katia chatted all through dinner. When Julian was ready for bed, Katia accompanied Cynthia to put him down. It was here that Katia asked Cynthia about Stuart.
"How did it happen? I haven't wanted to ask any of the others."
"It's a sensitive subject for everyone, especially for John. He hardly talks about it."
"I can imagine how hard it must have been for everyone."
"Astrid told us Stu had been having frequent headaches...very intense, violent headaches. She found him unconscious in his bed and called an ambulance. The diagnosis was that he died of a brain hemorrhage."
"How is Astrid?"
"She was absolutely crushed. She still is. I don't think she'll ever get over it to tell you the truth."
"I can't even imagine how she felt. She loved Stuart so much."
"It was a hard time for everyone."
Before leaving that evening, Katia and Andrew made plans with Cynthia to go sightseeing and shopping the next day.
"You sure you can handle both of them?" John asked.
"I'll let you know tomorrow." Andrew smiled.

Cynthia arrived the next morning to take Andrew and Katia out for breakfast before going sightseeing. Katia was surprised she didn't have Julian with her.
"I usually leave him with Dot or my mum when I go shopping. Fans aren't exactly the greatest towards me and I prefer not to have Julian with me when I am out without John."
"You think the fans would harm Julian?" Katia asked surprised.
"Maybe not intentionally...I'd like to think not intentionally, but I am not about to risk his well-being."
After breakfast, Cynthia drove them around the city to see some of the most popular touristic spots. Andrew had never been out of the States and was incredibly excited for the experience. Later that afternoon, Cynthia and Katia separated from Andrew so everyone could do a bit of shopping. They agreed to meet back up in an hour to head back to the hotel.
"So Cynthia, I'm assuming you're going to be going to the Bahamas with us, right?" Katia asked as she looked through the clothes on the rack.
"Actually no." She said sadly.
Katia looked over at her surprised. "Why not?"
"I was planning on leaving Julian with my mum, but her cousin is in the hospital and she's gone down to care for her. I don't like leaving him for so long with Dot...but I told John I could most likely meet him in the next film location."
"Oh...I was really looking forward to having you there." Katia said disappointed.
"Me too...but at least we're able to spend these days together."
Cynthia helped Katia pick out a few key pieces to go with some of the clothes she had already brought.
"Those are very pretty outfits Kat. I'm sure Andrew will love them on you." Cynthia said as Katia paid for the clothes.
"Oh...uhh...Andrew and I are just friends." Katia said. "We're not together."
"Oh I'm sorry...I just thought that..."
"No." Katia laughed. "We live together, but that's it."
"Really?"
"Do we really give off that vibe?" Katia asked curiously.
"You two just seem to get along so well. Last night, when you introduced him to me, I just assumed he was your boyfriend. He kind of reminds me of..." Cynthia started, but drifted off.
"...of who?"
"He reminds me of Paul. You and Andrew remind me of how you and Paul were when you lived in Liverpool."
"My relationship with Andrew has never been like what I had with Paul...it never could be." Katia replied.
Cynthia looked at Katia for a few seconds before speaking again.
"Katia...do you still have feelings for Paul?"
Katia scoffed. "Of course not!" she said as she began walking out of the store.
"You do! Don't you?" Cynthia said following close to her.
"No...Paul and I are just friends. Oh! Look, there's Andrew." Katia said trying to change the subject.
Cynthia took Katia and Andrew back to the hotel so they could get some rest. The boys had planned on having dinner with them that night, but the recording session at the studio ran long and they called to let them know they'd have to postpone it for the next day. In all honesty, Katia didn't mind much. Running around the city with Cynthia all day had tired her out, and Andrew seemed to share the same sentiment.
Katia and Andrew spent their last day in London being tourists. Despite having gone with Cynthia the day before, London was a big enough city to need a full week's worth of sightseeing to be able to see everything that it had to offer. Earlier that morning, Paul had phoned Katia to see if they'd meet them for a quick lunch. He apologized for not spending much time with them, but they needed to finish some recordings at the studio before filming started. During their lunch, they discussed the travel arrangements for the next day. The plane would be leaving at 8:30 in the morning. Neil or Mal would be at the hotel to meet them by 7 am.
Once at the hotel, Katia and Andrew made sure everything was packed and ready for the next morning.
