Chapter 10

"Fuckin' ridiculous, isn't it? Paul's gone absolutely mad if he thinks I'm going to stop spending time with you."

"Just let me talk to him..."

John shrugged. "He's going to have to get over it either way, Kat...but you talk to him if you want." John said as he walked away.

Katia sighed. She grabbed her shorts and put them on before heading to the hotel lobby. Paul was now sitting in a chair with his elbows on his knees; George leaning over and talking to him. Andrew saw Katia approaching and gave her a look of relief.

"Do you guys mind if I talk to Paul for a minute?" Katia asked as she reached them.

"Please do." George said a bit irritated. George and Andrew left them alone, but Paul didn't even look up at Kat.

"Paul?" He didn't move. Katia knelt down and leaned on her heels in front of him.

"Paul...please look at me...we need to talk about what just happened back there." Katia said softly.

Paul sighed and finally looked at her. He looked both angry and embarrassed. "I'm sorry you had to see that." he said.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah...it was pretty stupid to try and fight John, huh?"

"That was a pretty dumb move." Katia half smiled.

Paul chuckled, but winced and put his hand on his ribs.

"Why did you want to punch John?"

"It's not important."

"If it wasn't important, then why the fight?"

Paul took a few seconds to answer. "I was mad."

"With John?"

"Yeah."

"John told me you didn't want him to hang out with me anymore."

Paul looked down at the floor.

"Paul...that's not your decision. You know I'm friends with him...and I can spend time with whoever I want...that includes John..."

Paul looked up again.

"Then why won't you spend time with me? It's always John and Kat...John and Kat...that used to be Paul and Kat!" he said frustrated.

"Paul...there is no John and Kat...there's no Paul and Kat...there's only Kat. Please...just...cool it with John, okay? He hasn't done anything wrong. He's just been a good friend to me."

Paul didn't say anything for a few seconds.

"Okay...I'll talk to John." he finally responded.

"Thank you." Katia said standing up.

"Just give me a few minutes, alright?" Paul said. "I'll head out there in a bit."

Katia nodded as she walked back to the pool area, leaving Paul in the hotel lobby. Andrew was waiting for Katia next to the pool. She walked over to him and sat down putting her feet in the water.

"Everything okay?" Andrew asked.

"I think so. Paul said he was going to go talk to John."

"So why was Paul so mad at John? George couldn't get it out of him."

"John claims it is because he is jealous."

"Paul jealous of John?"

"My thoughts exactly...but I confirmed it with Paul when I talked to him. He went on about how these past few days it's been John and Kat...when it used to be Paul and Kat..."

"Hey...how about Andrew and Kat?" Andrew asked acting hurt.

Katia laughed. "Don't get me started on that! Apparently we were so much Andrew and Kat that we were forced into separate hotel rooms, remember?"

"How could I forget." Andrew smiled.

Just then, they saw Paul come back outside. Both Andrew and Kat watched him head over to John. John was having a drink with Mal, who immediately stood up and left his seat to Paul when he arrived. John offered a cigarette to Paul and he took it. Katia watched from afar as they talked, knowing that the conversation was about her.

"C'mon...let's get you a drink..." Andrew said as he got up and helped her to her feet. "It's not polite to stare, Kat." he whispered before taking her hand and lead her to a table with bottles of alcohol and drinks.

"Are you starting early today?" Andrew questioned.

"Well...it is our last day here!" Katia answered so Andrew went ahead and made her a rum and coke.

Despite not wanting to stare, Katia did find herself sneaking looks in John and Paul's direction as she sipped on her drink. She finally relaxed when she saw them laughing.

"Can we continue with our day now?" Andrew smiled. "Lennon and McCartney are back to being friends...all is right in the world."

"Oh be quiet! I still haven't told Paul our answer about staying...so don't get on my bad side or I won't put in a good word for you!" Katia teased.

"You wouldn't!" Andrew feigned indignation.

Katia laughed. It didn't take long before both Paul and John were walking over to Andrew and Katia.

"So...I hear you two will be staying with us a bit longer?" John remarked.

"I don't believe I've given an answer yet." Katia smiled.

"That smile is your answer, love." John laughed. "I for one, commend Paulie here on a marvelous idea." John said patting Paul's back.

Katia was always surprised and a bit jealous of how easily men could patch things up. Not even a half hour ago, John and Paul had to be pulled apart, and here they were as if nothing had happened.

"Why thank you, John. Now, for an official answer from Kat."

"Yes...we will stay as long as Brian agrees and has work for us." Katia smiled widely.

"Kat, you must know that with us, there's always work to be done!" John laughed.

Everyone laughed and Katia could tell Paul was happy with the news. He immediately said he was going to contact Brian so he could get the ball rolling on things. Katia brought up work permits and visas and Paul eased her mind by telling her Brian would handle everything.

"All you have to do is enjoy your last day at the Bahamas...I'll arrange everything with Brian. " Paul said as he headed into the hotel.

Once the reality hit that Andrew and Katia would be working for the Beatles, Katia couldn't contain her excitement. She drank more than she regularly would have, but she wanted to just have fun and not worry about Paul or Jane or anything. She really did just want to enjoy her last day here at the Bahamas.

"What's this?" she asked as Andrew handed her a glass of water as she sat by the pool.

"You need to ease up on the drinks or you'll never make it to tonight." Andrew smiled.

"What's going on tonight?"

"One last party before we leave."

"Well I should have seen that coming!" Katia laughed.

"Alright...no more drinks until tonight." she told Andrew as she laid back in the lounger and took in some sun.

About a half hour later, she looked around and saw George and Ringo in the pool, but Andrew, John and Paul were nowhere to be seen. She flipped through a magazine that she had brought with her looking at the latest fashion and to her surprise came across an article about Jane. She was tempted to skip it, but her curiosity got the best of her.

It was called, "The Jane Asher Look" written by Gloria Stavers:

It's Natural, it's long and straight, it's slim and feminine -and if you like it, here's how you can achieve it.

IF YOU'RE a Jane Asher fan, you probably know that she recorded the story of Alice In Wonderland about seven years ago. She did the role of Alice -and Jane (in real life) is a bit like the Alice of that mystical, marvelous story. She has very long hair, round blue eyes and a rather deliberate way of speaking -and thinking. (Who wouldn't have, when mum and dad are both university types?).

When Jane does a TV show or a film, the make-up men try to persuade her to let them do her up, but Jane is firm against it. "If my lips came out white on the screen," Jane explains, "I would certainly use lipstick, but they come out quite the right color if I put absolutely nothing on them. I would use lipstick if I found one that suited me, but I've never found one".

Jane feels much the same about nail polish. "I play the guitar, so I have to keep the nails on my right hand short," she explains. "Nail varnish would look silly on them. I don't mind it for other people, but it's just not for me."However, Jane loves "making up." She finds it great fun to experiment with eye liners, eye shadows, brush-on colors and any new thing that comes along. She's been interested in make-up since her first movie role in Mandy, at the age of five. She started wearing make-up for real when she was 15 "... and I became fairly expert at 16".

The Jane Asher Look is acquired by applying a light foundation (you can get it at the ten-cent store) and a light blush of powder. Then line the eyelash-root area of your upper eyelids with liner liquid (all these things are at the ten-cent store, luv). Last of all, apply mascara to the upper eyelashes. Try a little on the lower lashes. If it doesn't look good (and it doesn't on some girls) wash it off.

Hair for the Jane Asher Look is long and straight. Jane is very lucky in that her hair is gorgeous -like spun gold. It is expertly cut, so it is subtly graduated from the crown to the tips. She has it washed twice a week (does it herself, if necessary) and shaped once a month. If it gets curly or wavy "... like when I sleep on it", Jane has it straightened at the beauty parlor. If your hair is naturally straight, you can just wet it when it "wrinkles" and it will straighten right out again.

Jane once declared that if she weren't an actress she would have become a hairdresser. She has several curled wigs and hair-pieces for the different parts she plays, but on her own she prefers to go straight. For Maggie Tulliver in Mill On The Floss, which Jane did on English TV, she wore a long brownish wig. "I happen to like it very much and often wear it on myself," Jane admits. "It's just for fun."

Jane has a hard time pinning up all of her own luxurious mane so that she can get the wigs over it. She has to pin it down very tightly in order to get it all out of sight. On some occasions, she wears a wiglet the same color and length of her real hair. It is fastened to a black bow which hides the place where she pins it on (just at the top of her bangs). It's very handy. The Jane Asher Look is a slim one. Jane doesn't have to diet. She couldn't put on weight if she wanted to, so she can eat all the sweets and sodas she wants. Lucky girl!

Delicate looking and feminine, Jane loves wearing long dresses in the evening. She'd wear them more often if it didn't mean being the only girl in one. Naturally, she adores playing period roles in shows, so she can wear lovely full-length romantic gowns.Jane Asher is a natural. She is sure of herself -and, of course, she is lucky in a lot of ways. She has looks, talent and charm .Not to mention one of the grooviest boyfriends any girl could have!

"Well la de da...isn't she the perfect girl. She has the perfect hair, the perfect complexion, the perfect nails...she can't put on weight and has Beatle Paul McCartney as a boyfriend." Katia muttered to herself after she finished reading the article. She sighed and closed the magazine. "And she's very nice to boot."

Katia had liked Jane...a lot. If it wasn't because of Paul, she and Jane could have gotten along marvelously. Katia had purposely stayed away from her. Yes, she didn't want to be reminded that Paul and her were dating, but deep down Katia knew she could easily become friends with her. Even with the limited interaction she had with Jane while she was at the Bahamas, she could tell Jane was something special...and this was her biggest worry...

Katia saw Andrew come back to the pool area with John and Paul. They were all giggling like school girls and Katia knew exactly what they had been doing. Katia saw John hand something over to Andrew before he walked up to her.

"Having fun, Andrew?" Katia smiled knowingly.

"Here...John sends you a gift." he said as he tried not to giggle.

He handed her half a joint and then burst out in laughter. Katia looked at him and saw the same glassiness in his eyes as Paul had the first night she was introduced to pot. Katia took the joint and held it. She looked at Andrew and noticed his skin had taken a liking to the sun and had bronzed very nicely, complimenting his dark brown hair and green eyes. He had let his hair grow out more than normal and she thought his five o'clock shadow gave him a look of maturity...but his smile was as boyish as ever.

"Are you going to open your gift?" he questioned.

"Looks like it's already been unwrapped." Katia said as she took a hit.

She had never really thought of herself as someone who would do drugs, but in this environment, it didn't seem so eccentric...it seemed rather normal.

"Do you think Jane smokes pot?" Katia whispered to Andrew.

They looked at each other very seriously and then burst into a fit of giggles.

"She looks too sophisticated to even hang about with this lot...and yet, she's Paul's girlfriend...so anything is possible." Katia answered her own question, still laughing.

"She has nothing on you, Kat."

"Did you know she can't put on weight...even if she wanted to?"

"What are you going on about?" Andrew chuckled.

"It's true...I just read an article about just how perfect Jane is..."

"According to whom?"

"Gloria something."

"Well you tell this Gloria...that I say Jane does not even come close to Katia."

"Will you write an article on that?" Katia laughed.

"What are you two snickering about?"

Ringo asked as he sat down next to them and took what was left of the joint from Katia. "And why had you kept this little guy secret?"

"It was a gift from John to me...but I am going to give it to you... with love..from me to you." Katia smiled.

***

Everyone had gone up to their rooms to change for the evening. When she got to her room, she didn't see Eleanor, thinking she was most likely finishing up some of her scenes. As she got ready for the night, Katia's mind wandered to the article she had read about Jane. She stared at herself in the mirror. She had just pulled her hair up into a ponytail. She struggled with her pride a little, but finally undid the ponytail and let her dark brown hair cascade down. Her hair was long, but more wavy than straight and she typically put it up to get it out of her face. She was so different from Jane and not just physically...it was a mystery to her how both she and Jane could have caught Paul's interest. Katia went to Andrew's room and found him chatting with George and Paul. Everyone was dressed pretty casual- jeans and a button down shirt.

"Ready?" George asked.

"Yes." Katia smiled.

"Well let's go celebrate our last night here." George said as he escorted Katia out of the room.

As had become the custom, Andrew and Katia hung out while George and John mingled with the crowd. A few minutes later, Ringo and Paul approached them offering a joint, but both Andrew and Katia opted that one time a day was enough for them. While Ringo and Paul disappeared, Katia and Andrew joined a few of the crew members for drinks. They had been chatting for about a half hour when Katia spotted Mal bringing out a couple of guitars.

"Come with me?" Katia smiled at Andrew.

"Where?" he laughed.

"Just come..." she said taking a hold of his hand and walking in Mal's direction.

"Kat...Andrew. Enjoying yourselves?"

"Yes...thank you. Hey Mal...what are these guitars doing here?" Katia asked.

"I usually have them handy in case any of the boys asks for one."

"Could we borrow this one?" Katia asked pointing to one of the guitars.

"Sure...do you play?" Mal asked as he handed over John's 12 string Framus guitar.

"No...but Andrew does." she said taking it and turning around to face Andrew. "Will you play something for me?"

"You have the Beatles here and you're asking me to play something for you?" he laughed. "I haven't practiced in a while...and I'm a little drunk at the moment."

"C'mon...please?" Katia asked sweetly as she held out the guitar.

Andrew had played Spanish guitar for years. His grandfather had taught him when he was a boy and the times Katia had listened to him play, she had been mesmerized by his talent.

"Alright..." he agreed as he took the guitar Katia was handing him and sat in a nearby chair. Katia sat down next to him; he tuned the guitar a bit and then began playing what he knew was one of Katia's favorite songs. Katia smiled as she watched him play. He had a few false starts at the beginning, but once he got started, he was amazing. Mal stayed and listened to him play as well and before long, there was a small crowd that had formed. Andrew was too focused on his playing to notice the people that had stopped to hear him play; only looking up and smiling at Katia from time to time. Katia noticed George and Paul were standing next to Mal, watching and listening intently as Andrew continued to play. When he finished the song, everyone clapped. Katia noticed Andrew was a bit embarrassed by the attention, but she was beaming with pride. He never gave himself enough credit for his playing since this type of music wasn't very popular among their friends, but Katia knew that other musicians could surely appreciate it.

"Where'd you learn how to play like that?" George asked genuinely impressed.

"Yeah...that was bloody amazing!" Paul added.

While Paul and George talked with Andrew, Katia went looking for John. She had wanted to ask him something since she found out Jane had left, but really hadn't found the proper time. She found him chatting at a table and she asked him if she could pull him away for a moment.

"Sure...what's going on?" he said standing up and following Katia.

"Why did Jane leave?" Katia's forwardness about the subject caught John a little off guard, taking a few seconds for him to respond.

"Paul and Jane had a bit of a row...that's why she left."

"Does she know that Paul and I dated? Was that what the fight was about?"

"No...and Kat, all suspicion Jane could have had about you and Paul having some kind of romantic history was completely shot when you responded to her question about Paul's old girlfriends...and for the record, I didn't agree with that...I know for a fact that you were and are still very important to Paul."

"How do you know?"

"You don't think the fact that Paul tried to punch me this afternoon is proof enough?" John asked.

Katia couldn't help but chuckle.

"What happened today can only be explained by the fact that Paul was jealous. He doesn't like me spending so much time with you."

"Was that what you two talked about?"

"Yeah..."

"And everything is okay between you guys now?"

"Everything is fine. We're not like you birds that keep grudges for years." he laughed.

"Yeah." Katia nodded.

"Now that you're staying, Paul's going to have to get over our friendship...because I don't plan on limiting my time with you just because Paul doesn't like it." John said.

"It's a bit comical...to think Paul would be jealous of you and me, isn't it?"

"Paul's a bit jealous of every man that interacts with you right now."

"He didn't seem very jealous of George." Katia rebuked.

"Well...that is true." John replied after thinking about it for a second. "Guess he's just jealous of me!" He laughed. "Where is Paul anyway?"

"He's with Andrew and George over there?" Katia said pointing to them.

"Do you want a drink?" John asked.

Katia laughed.

"What's so funny?"

"I feel like I've had a drink in my hand for most of this trip. I have probably drank more in the time I've spent here at the Bahamas than all of last year combined!"

"You're on vacation...drinking goes hand in hand." John smiled.

"Not this much drinking!" she laughed as she walked with John to get herself another drink.

"It's just a way to help you relax, Kat...and you've kind of needed it these last few days."

"I suppose."

"Besides, you better drink up...soon enough you'll be a working girl again...wouldn't want you drinking on the job."

"Well with you to take care of, I don't know if I'll be able to refrain from drinking on the job." Katia smiled.

For the next half hour Katia and John chatted until Paul stopped and asked Katia if she wanted to dance.

"Ummm...sure." Katia replied.

"Have fun you two." John winked.

"So...Andrew can really play." Paul said as he pulled put his hands on her waist and she slipped her hands around his neck.

"Yeah...he's really good. He sells himself short most of the time though."

"George and I were really impressed. George is actually still with him trying to learn a few things."

"Really? I'm sure Andrew is enjoying that." Katia smiled.

They danced for the rest of the song. When the song ended, neither one of them separated. They continued dancing as the next song began.

"Can I ask you a question?" Katia finally asked.

"Sure."

"Do you love Jane?" Katia blurted out.

"Kat...let's not get into that."

"Why not? It just seems a little odd to me that you've been with her for years and then I show back up in your life and with a snap of a finger, you're telling me how you want to be with me and not the girl you've been dating for years. I mean you and I dated for only a couple of months..."

"Kat...we may have dated for just a few months, but you and I had something special even before we made it official back in Liverpool."

"That was years ago, Paul. And are you seriously going to stand here and look me in the eyes and tell me she doesn't mean anything to you?" Katia looked at him.

Paul shifted his gaze. Katia dropped her hands from Paul's neck.

"Paul? Look at me and tell me that she doesn't mean anything to you."

Seconds passed and still no answer.

"You can't. Because you still love her."

"Kat...I care about you. It was so hard to be without you after you left. You have no idea the pain I was in...not only because you weren't with me, but because of everything that was going on in your life. I couldn't be there for you...I...I don't ever want to let you go again...I want you to be a part of my life."

Katia sighed. "You didn't answer my question." She said moving Paul's hands from her waist. "I gotta go."

***

The next morning, Katia woke up with a pounding headache. Eleanor had all but finished packing.

"You almost ready, Kat?" Eleanor asked.

"You go on ahead...I'll be down in a minute."

"Okay." she said as she headed to the lobby.

Katia finished packing a few of her toiletries, put on a baseball cap and walked down the hall to the elevator.

"Kat? You feeling okay?" Andrew asked when he saw her walking toward the car.

"Do I look that bad?" she asked as she put on her sunglasses.

"Here, let me take that." Andrew said as he grabbed her suitcase.

"Thanks...I need to...go sit." Katia replied as she slouched into the backseat of the car.

Andrew put her bag in the trunk of the car before going to sit next to her. He leaned over her and opened the window. "You may need the window open for the car drive to the airport."

"Thanks." she leaned her head on his shoulder.

"Too much drinking last night?" Andrew asked.

"Entirely too much." she groaned.

Andrew chuckled a little to himself as she rested against him. Katia saw the boys heading towards the car and Ringo, John and Mal piled in while Paul and George joined Neil in the other car.

"What's the matter, Kat?" Ringo asked.

She didn't bother to even respond. She simply looked at him with misery.

"Oh." He sympathized.

"All that drinking finally did you in." John said.

"Yes...but I had so much fun last night...it was worth it." she half smiled.

"Tell me if it was worth it when we're on the plane." Andrew remarked.

"Please, don't remind me. My head is about to explode and we're on the ground."

"Have you taken anything for that headache?" John asked.

"No." John reached into his pocket and took out some pills. "Here. Take two of these. It'll do the trick."

Katia straightened up as she took the pills from his hand. She looked down at them. "What are they?" she asked hesitantly.

John laughed. "Aspirin. Don't worry, love. I wouldn't give you anything stronger without you knowing."

Katia smiled, a little embarrassed by what she had initially thought and took the pills. She rested her head on Andrew until they got to the airport. They would take a plane back to London and the boys would have a couple of days off before going into the studio to record some of the songs for the soundtrack. Katia slept for most of the trip back to London. Andrew woke her up just as they announced they would be landing.

"How are you feeling?"

"A little better, but still hung over." Katia confessed.

"Back to dreary London." George said as he started handing out everyone's coats.

"I'm going to really miss the weather at the Bahamas." Katia said to no one in particular.

"You better get used to it now that you'll be working here with us." Ringo said to Katia.

"I guess so." she replied.

As they landed, Katia saw that despite the rain, there was a large crowd of fans waiting for the Beatles. Neil suggested Andrew and Kat stay behind while the boys went into the first car. After the boys drove off, they would join Neil and Mal in the second car. As soon as the boys got off the plane, Katia heard the roar of the screaming fans. She looked out the window and saw hundreds of girls holding signs and jumping up and down. It was an impressive sight. All four of the boys waved as they got into the car.

"Where are the rest of the umbrellas?" Mal asked looking around.

"I guess the boys took them all." Katia said looking at the car that was now leaving.

"This is a bit of a predicament." Neil said.

"Oh, let's just run over to the car...this rain doesn't look like it's going to let up any time soon." Katia said.

"Alright...we'll have someone come get the luggage once the rain clears."

"We'll be right behind you." Andrew said to Neil and took Katia's hand. "Be careful not to slip."

Katia nodded.

Everyone hurried down the stairs as quickly as they could being careful not to slip and ran across the pavement into the car. Katia hadn't realized just how much rain was coming down and by the time she got in the car she was completely soaked.

"It's really pouring out there!" Andrew remarked.

"We'll be meeting the boys at the hotel..."Neil informed them as he tried to shake the excess water off his own coat.
