Chapter Twenty
Jensen sat on Elle's bed watching us do our makeup. Brenna actually joined in too. All of the boys were down stairs hanging out in the living room waiting on us. Jensen had worn a Unicorn horn to keep up with the Halloween spirit. Mr. and Mrs. Munro had bought candy for them to pass out since they would be home. Jensen was actually excited by the idea of getting to participate in Halloween without having to run into her ex. I couldn't blame her.
Elle was dressed up and Harley Quinn and Brenna was dressed as Poison Ivy. I loved it. I adjusted my aviators, trying to make sure they didn't mess up my makeup. I knew they would end up tucked into my shirt at some point.
The police outfit was a bodysuit with a zipper down the front to control cleavage. It had come with a hat and badge too. I felt like a stripper before the show but the girls assured me it wasn't too much.
We headed downstairs and got a bunch of whistles from the boys. Mrs. Munro was still in the kitchen decorating cookies for tonight.
She popped her head around the corner and said, "Well don't you all look cute. Love it."
At least we had one parent's stamp of approval. I still felt self conscious in my outfit.
Tyler walked up to me and said, "Hey, we can trade outfits if you don't like yours."
I laughed at the thought of that. I wasn't sure Tyler could fit into my outfit. I would have plenty of room in his. His outfit looked like the equivalent of sweatpants.
"Why do boys get the comfy outfits?"
Tyler looked me dead in the eyes, "Come with me." We walked back upstairs. Once we were in Elle's room he started stripping off his clothes.
"Ty, you can't be serious."
"Alex, I will rock that one piece. I want you to feel good. You already look sexy in a paper sack. I don't care what you wear. I care that you feel comfortable."
I peeled off my bodysuit and handed it over to Tyler. It took him a minute to rearrange his junk and he had to hike up the suit so that it fit all the way on but it was surprisingly stretchy. He grabbed my hat, badge and aviators. After throwing his hair up into a messy bun and putting the hat on over it he swung on the aviators.
"How do I look?" He asked.
I laughed, "Like the worst drag queen in Toronto but I love it."
He came over and hugged my still almost naked body, "And I love you. Now get dressed."
I put on his outfit and fixed my hair a bit. We took a selfie and then headed downstairs. Tyler made his grand entrance and had then entire room howling in laughter. Mrs. Munro's eyes looked like they were about to pop out of her head. I noticed that she couldn't help but notice Tyler's... package. It was hard not to notice in the skin tight suit. I handed him the pair of handcuffs I had left down here.
He twirled them around, "These could be fun sometime."
I rolled my eyes, "Cool it, fifty shades."
Tyler laughed, "Don't worry, I like my women mobile."
I rolled my eyes again. I gave Jensen a hug and she assured me that I looked awesome in the inmate get up. Once we took some photos we started walking down the block to the Flores house.
It occurred to me that I had never actually been inside their house. I had been to the Stone's house once, otherwise I had always just gone between my cousins, the Munro/Evan's house, and the Masons.
Everyone started out the backdoor instead of the front.
I was confused.
Tyler smiled at me, "Shortcut."
The very back corner had a side gate. I had assumed they had it there for trash pick up. We went through it and were in a back ally. Tyler led the way. We came out of the side street onto a cul-de-sac. There was one house lit up for Día de los Muertos. This had to be it.
"How did I not know the Flores lived that close?"
Tyler laughed, "Because you don't get out enough."
That was probably true.
"Orient me please, how far apart does everyone actually live from each other?"
Tyler smiled, "Let's say this is the start of the block. For all of us, it basically is anyways. The Flores' are 'First Street'. The Evans/Munros are 'Second Street'. You live on 'Fourth Street' and so do your cousins. I live three streets over on 'Seventh Street' and then Mrs. Stone lives on 'Eleventh Street'. So all the families live a total of eleven streets apart. Has no one told you that yet?"
I shrugged, "I mean, no. I just follow everyone. Where does Mr. Stone and the Leighton's live?"
"Oh shit, I forgot about Annie and Landon. They live somewhere on 'Sixth Street'. I've been there like twice. Which is sad since it's only one street over from me."
"So if we're counting streets, the school would be on 'Thirteenth street'?"
"Exactly. Been here a year already and you're just now getting it."
"I don't drive. Why would I need to get it?"
Tyler laughed, "You got me there."
Out in front of the Flores' house was a garden display. It had tea lights that could be lit. You could write a name on the light. Then there were marigolds surrounding the lights.
I looked at the others, "It's for Día de los Muertos. You can light a light for anyone you've lost this year." All eyes were on me, "I will light one later. I am not in the mood for that yet."
There was a group nod and we headed inside. It felt like we had stepped through a doorway into Mexico. Mrs. Flores had outdone herself. I had asked Danny and apparently Mr. Flores' parents were from the capital town of Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico and Mrs. Flores' parents were from Monterrey in Nuevo León, Mexico.
The house smelled amazing. There were subtle hints of incense and baked goods. We saw trays of Pan, Tres Leches, and Flan on one table and then flautas, fried quesadillas, street tacos, and gorditas on another. I was in heaven. It felt like I was back home in Dallas at the local taqueria. I had not found one that I liked here yet.
I walked over and got some Horchata to drink. It was delicious.
I handed some to Tyler. He took a swig and said, "Just needs rum."
"How do you know that?"
He smirked, "It's not the first Mexican themed party the Flores' have held, Bonita."
"Well it's the first for me. Makes me miss home."
"Texas is a lot closer to Mexico than Toronto. I will give you that."
"Jordan is half Mexican. She made us this stuff all the time."
"Jordan Baker?"
"Baker was her Dad's name. Gomez was her mom's."
"Gotcha."
We made our rounds around the first floor first. I walked out with Tyler to the back yard where most of the adults were. They all got a kick out of our costume swap. My dad was all for it.
"Yes, sweats. I love you in sweats."
"Love you too, Dad. Are you spending most of the night here?" I could tell he had already been adding rum to his Horchata.
He smiled, "Are you spending the night at Elle's? I was thinking of crashing at Uncle Jim's if you were. It's a little bit of a closer walk."
I wasn't going to say anything about it only being three houses closer. It just meant that my house would be empty. "I think so."
He hugged me and we went on with the rounds we were making.
I noticed Mrs. Flores getting on to Danny in his alter boy outfit. I wondered how that had gone. We hadn't seen Miri or Darcy yet.
We headed down stairs.
It was decorated like a graveyard down here. There was an old movie called Nosferatu playing on a projector screen.
There had to be thirty or forty people down here. Tyler wrapped an arm around me. There were strobe lights going and music playing. The couches had been moved over against the walls. They also had the egress window open and the backdoor was screened to allow some airflow. Otherwise I think all of this body heat would have made me faint.
Tyler whispered in my ear, "We can go back upstairs, Baby. I know tight crowds aren't your thing."
I shook my head, "We can stay here for a bit."
I walked around with Tyler and found Laura. I was happy to see Gavin had come in for the party. I hugged his neck as he picked me up.
He took one look at Tyler and said, "Did you raid Miri's closet?"
Tyler laughed, "Nope. Where is she?"
Gavin laughed, "She tried to show up in a mini dress and a habit and Mrs. Flores wouldn't let her in."
"Darcy too?" I added.
Gavin nodded, "Oh it was great. Declan went with them. I think they went to our house to watch movies."
I wanted the subject changed, "Did Dylan come with you?"
"Naw, he said he was over high school parties. I mean, I'm only here because of Laura. Otherwise I'd be back in the dorms."
That was actually sweet. Still a little creepy but I wasn't going to say it. I realized they were the same age difference as Ari and Darcy or Reece and Ryan. It just gave me the ick.
The music started getting louder, they were encouraging people to get out on the makeshift dance floor. Tyler led the way. I held on to his biceps as he led me into a rhythm. It was slow and intoxicating. Our eyes locked and it felt like the room was melting away. It was only us.
I felt myself grind against him in time with the music. Tyler leaned in and kissed me softly.
"Having fun, Baby?"
I nodded, "You're the only person who could get me to have fun at these things."
Tyler chuckled, "I try."
"Can we go back upstairs for a while? I need air."
We started making our way through the crowd. I saw Elle and Aaron making out in the corner, Brenna and Nixon were grinding on each other, and the rest of the group was either dancing or chugging what I assumed was more Rumchata than Horchata at this point.
Upstairs, Ryan and Reece sat on the couch talking. Danny looked moody in a corner. I wondered why he hadn't followed Miri over to her house.
I walked over to check in on him. "Rough night?"
"My mom won't let me leave and won't let Miri stay, so yeah. Shitty night."
"You know, your mom is outside in the back. Miri is seven streets down from here. Your house is full of people. Who's going to notice?
Danny's face lit up in a mischievous grin. "You have a point there Lex."
He stood up and slipped out the front door. Tyler came up behind me. "She's going to notice. Mrs. Flores is like a dog hunting for a bone when it comes to her kids."
I smiled, "Well, at least he gets to enjoy tonight then."
"And how are you enjoying tonight?"
"I am having a blast. But I am also ready to get the hell out of here."
"Ready to go some place quieter?"
"Exactly."
"It's still early. We could back to Ari's and help him and Jensen pass out candy."
"I want even quieter than that. I'm ready to go back to my house, if you're ready?"
Tyler smiled a devilish grin, "I was born ready, Baby."
