Twelve

Cas was ridiculously happy over the next few days, and so was Dean.

"Do you think Gabe is ever going to win Sam over?" Dean asked one night as they were on the couch.

"A while ago I would've said not a chance, but now I'm not so sure," Cas said.

"Really? What makes you say that?" Dean asked.

"I don't know, its just a feeling," Cas said.

"Well I guess we'll see," Dean replied, rubbing Cas' arm. Dean's phone started ringing and he picked it up. After he looked at it, he put it down, not answering.

"Who was that?" Cas asked.

"My dad," Dean said. Cas sat up fully.

"You still aren't talking to him, then?" He asked. Dean nodded.

"I left. I'm done with him," he said. Cas frowned slightly.

"Dean, are you sure? I mean, he's your dad," he said.

"He's a drunk who can't keep a job. He didn't even come to our wedding!" Dean exclaimed.

"But he's your dad," Cas said calmly, taking Dean's hand.

"Cas, I appreciate your effort, but... the only reason I stayed as long as I did was Sammy," Dean said. Cas leaned forward and kissed Dean.

"I'm sorry you don't like your dad," he said. Dean smiled.

"Why do I need him when I have you?" He asked. Cas smiled.

"I love you, Dean," he said.

"I love you too Cas."

A few days later, Cas decided to visit Dean at work. He'd gotten bored at his bookstore so he closed early and headed up to the apartment. He checked the pantry for... there it was. He grabbed the pie and cut a slice, packing it up and going down to his car. He didn't drive much, mostly because Dean always said he was a horrible driver. He was right, too, it was a miracle Cas hadn't gotten in a wreck.

Cas drove over with a smile on his face. Dean had surprised him so many times, he was excited to return the favor, even if it was a small surprise. Bobby greeted him as he walked in.

"I assume you came to see your man?" He asked.

"Yeah. Is he busy?" Cas asked. Bobby shook his head.

"Nah, I think he just went out back for a break," he said. Cas nodded.

"Thanks Bobby," he said. Bobby nodded to him as he walked past.

"Dean," he said as he opened the door, "I brought you some-" No. No, no no no. The container with the pie in it fell from Cas' hand and hit the ground, spilling its contents everywhere. Everything he thought he'd put behind him came rushing back. Dean was there... but so was Angel. No, Cas couldn't believe it. But he'd seen it with his own eyes. Dean was kissing Angel. They broke apart when the door slammed shut behind Cas.

"Dean?" Cas asked hollowly. He could feel an emptiness opening up inside him, ready to swallow him whole. Dean stared at Cas with wide eyes.

"Cas, no, I-" Cas didn't wait for the rest of it. He wasn't good enough for Dean, he knew it. He should've known he could never make Dean happy. Cas turned and ran back towards his car.
How could he have been so stupid?

"Cas, wait!" Cas heard Dean shout, but he couldn't, he just couldn't stay. He climbed into his car and tore out of the parking lot, tears streaming down his face. He should've seen this coming. He never should've believed that the person he met in college could ever change. He couldn't believe how stupid he'd been. He wasn't sure where he was, but he slowed to a stop, resting his head against the wheel. Then... he heard the horn, but he didn't have the will to react. Dean, I love- CRASH!

His world went black.
