Fourteen
Cas hated not knowing things. Five years down the drain, he couldn't believe it. He had a lot to catch up on. He felt bad for Dean though. Cas wasn't sure what, but he could tell that Dean was going through a lot. He wanted to know so he could be there for Dean, but he was scared to ask. One thing he did learn was that Dean was an amazing cook. Cas hadn't expected it from such a rock-n-roll guy, but he could make anything, and make it good. It was over one of the best cheeseburgers Cas had ever experienced that he asked his first question that day.
"Dean, am I dating anyone?" He asked. Dean paused before answering, the expression on his face changing.
"No. You never really dated. You did hook up with someone in college, though," he said. Cas almost choked on a piece of burger.
"Hooked up? As in..." Cas felt a blush creeping up his face.
"You aren't a virgin, my friend," Dean said.
"Is that pride I detect in your voice?" Cas asked, raising an eyebrow. Dean smiled a bit.
"Maybe," he said. Cas rolled his eyes. Dean got up and leaned over the table to grab the salt, and as he did, a necklace fell out of his shirt and dangled there. Cas was fascinated by it, it was pair of silver wings on a chain. Dean noticed Cas staring as he sat back down.
"Cas?" Dean asked quietly.
"Wings... was that... was that important to me?" Cas asked, looking up into Dean's eyes. Dean stared back with so many emotions on his face that Cas couldn't identify them.
"I mean, you're the only person who would really know, but... I think so, yes," Dean said eventually. Cas practically heard the I hope so but he didn't know what to do with it.
"Was that necklace mine?" Cas asked.
"Yeah. I was always stealing your stuff, I guess," Dean told him, looking back down at the table.
"Well you can keep it if you want. For a second I thought I remembered something, but it's gone," Cas said. Dean nodded, avoiding eye contact.
"Did I see ice cream in the freezer earlier?" Cas asked, desperate to cheer Dean up. He nods.
"Yeah, there's a thing of chocolate," he said. Cas nodded and jumped up to get some. He gets two bowls and starts scooping ice cream into one. Dean walked into the kitchen just as Cas topped off the first bowl.
"I don't think I want any," Dean said. Cas scoffed and handed him the bowl.
"Yeah right. Ice cream always makes things better," Cas said. Dean smiled at him and took the bowl.
"Okay, fine," he said. They ate their ice cream and talked for a while before Dean decided they should go to bed.
"I have to... I have to work tomorrow," Dean said.
"You don't sound enthusiastic. Do you not like your job?" Cas asked.
"The job is fine, it's the coworkers I don't like. One of them... took something from me. Something important. And I don't know if I'll ever get it back," Dean said, looking down.
"That sounds horrible. I hope you get it back," Cas said. Dean wiped at his eyes and stood up.
"Me too. But this is getting depressing. I'm going to bed. I'll see you in the morning?" Dean asked with clearly forced cheeriness. Cas nodded, standing up also. Dean turned and walked to his room without saying anything. Cas took a few steps towards the door as it closed behind Dean, but he stopped as he heard a crash and the muffled sounds of sobbing through the wall. And even though he barely knew Dean, the sound filled Cas with more pain than he'd ever felt. He took a few more steps, about to knock on Dean's door, but then he changed his mind. What could he do; he was only Dean's roommate.
