CHAPTER TWO, moving day
(violet's outfit for this chapter)
Violet was in the kitchen the next day, helping DJ out by giving Tommy his breakfast bottle. "Can't forget the most important meal of the day, Tommy." She smiled, handing Tommy his bottle. She ran a hand through her brunette hair, glancing over to he right when she heard footsteps and smiled upon seeing her best friend.
"Morning, mom, Violet." Jackson greeted as he walked into the kitchen. Violet smiled and waved at him in response.
DJ smiles. "There he is! My beautiful firstborn baby boy." Jackson looks at her weirdly while she kisses his cheek. "Have a seat right at the head of the table and while you wait for your favorite pancakes," DJ picks up a chocolate milkshake she made and bends the straw. "Enjoy a pre-breakfast milkshake."
"You're being weird." Jackson stated.
"I'm not being weird. Can't a mom make her beautiful firstborn son a pre-breakfast milkshake?" DJ asks. She cringes. "Okay, that was kind of weird."
"Can I have some hot fudge on my pancakes?" Jackson asked.
"Sure, honey." DJ smiled.
Jackson points at her, looking at her suspisoucsly. "Okay, you're up to something."
DJ grimaced and walked into the kitchen as Max walked up stairs, dragging a half awake Stephanie. Violet looked over with amusement.
"I got her up." Max announces. "Aunt Stephanie is not a morning person."
"I don't blame her." Violet laughs. "I'm not a morning person either, but I'm up anyway 'cause I have to be."
"No. No, Aunt Stephanie is a night person." Stephanie told Max.
DJ walks back to the table, setting a plate of pancakes in front of Jackson, and one plate of pancakes in front of Max. She then went back to grab the last plate, setting it in front of Violet which earned a smile from her. She always told DJ she didn't have to make her breakfast since she could do that at her house, but after the many times she failed with DJ not listening and assuring she was fine with making her breakfast, Violet just decided to go with it. She's getting a free breakfast so that is a win.
Stephanie smirks. "You know, when the clubs are going off, bottles are popping, people are hooking up..." DJ clears her throat, sending her sister a look as she points at Max. "Their Xboxes." Stephanie sheepishly smiled.
"Aunt Steph, let's go get some juice." DJ suggested, earning a confused look from Stephanie.
"I don't want any juice."
"Then help me pick out my juice." DJ links her arm with Stephanie. Violet raises her eyebrows, wondering why DJ was acting so weird. DJ glances at her with a sheepish smile after noticing her look. "She's such a good juice picker-outer." Violet shrugged and started eating her pancakes as DJ and Stephanie walked over to the fridge. Violet figured they were talking about how DJ hasn't told the boys about how Ramona is moving in.
****
Violet watches with amusement as DJ put on a lot of whipped cream on top of Jackson's pancake that also now had hot fudge on it. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed Tommy smiling at the scene which made her smile at him, thinking he was so cute.
"Mo, just tell me what's going on." Jackson pleaded after DJ finished.
"Um...Okay." DJ nervously said, setting the whipped cream can down and picking up a cherry. "You might think this is bad news, but it really is good news, just hiding in not-so-great news." She sets the cherry on top of the whipped cream. "It's like cauliflower filled with jellybeans." DJ then walked into the kitchen with a grimaced expression.
Jackson glances over at Violet for help, but she just shrugs her shoulders and goes back to eating her pancakes. Jackson sighs. He was hoping Violet knew what his mom was talking about and that she would tell him, but it seems like that wasn't happening. He stands up and follows his mom into the kitchen. "Come on, mom. How bad can it be?" His heart dropped to his stomach and his eyes widened in disbelief upon seeing one of the two people walking into the kitchen.
"Really bad for you." Violet answered Jackson's question, sympathetically smiling at her best friend.
"I've waited my whole life to say this..." Kimmy smiles widely, setting her luggage on the floor. Her daughter stood by her with an upset look on her face. She outstretches her arms. "Home, sweet home."
Jackson turns to face his mom with disbelief, immediately saying, "No."
DJ shrugs, sheepishly smiling. "Yes."
Kimmy faces Stephanie with a bright smile. "Come here, sister-wife." While Stephanie grimaced and kept her arms at her side, Kimmy hugged her and kissed her cheek.
"So, now you all know the good news." DJ said, glancing at her boys with a smile. "Kimmy and Ramona are here to help us out. And we really appreciate it, don't we, boys?"
"Works for me." Max shrugs. "The more people to drive me around, the merrier."
Jackson glares at his mom. "Uh, jellybean-filled cauliflower my butt!" He then stormed outside, slamming the door behind him.
"Ooh, the mouth on that kid!" Max commented and Violet chuckled.
"Oh, I feel at home already." Kimmy smiled, taking off her bacon scarf and set it on the counter. She then took out a drawing of a hand turkey and taped it on the fridge.
DJ smiles a bit. "Oh, that's sweet. You kept Ramona's turkey art?"
Kimmy points at the picture. "No, that's mine."
****
"You really think that this cake will bribe Jackson?" Violet asked in disbelief as she helped DJ ice a chocolate cake.
"Yes." DJ smiles. "Who can resist a chocolate cake?"
"Good point." Violet nods. She looks at the cake longingly. "I'm honestly having trouble not taking a bite out of it right now."
DJ chuckles, smiling at her with amusement. "You can have a piece of it later." She looks over when the back door opens and Jackson walks in, holding his helmet. She smiles. "Jackson, perfect timing. I baked your favorite-" Violet clears her throat to get DJ's attention. "With Violet's help. Chocolate cake."
"Mom, mom, mom, if this is another bribe about Kimmy and Ramona moving in, I'm cool." Jackson reassured his mom and DJ looked at him with relief.
Violet looks at him with surprise. "Seriously?"
"Yeah." Jackson smiles. "I can just go hide in my room."
Violet glances at DJ with confusion when the blonde looked nervous. "My boy cave." Jackson grinned.
"About your boy cave, there's something else I need to tell you." DJ admits. "Well, it's really not bad news. I wouldn't say it's great news. I wouldn't say terrible. I wouldn't say wonderful."
Max runs down the stairs, looking panicked. "Jackson! Your room is under attack! This is not a drill!"
Jackson follows his brother up the stairs as DJ groans. "Really got to work on getting to the point."
Violet sympathetically smiles at her and takes off the apron she had on. "Yeah, you really do, Deej." Violet then ran up the stairs to check out what was happening. Her eyes widened when she saw all of Jackson's things were out in the hallway.
"My stuff!" Jackson exclaimed.
"Excuse me." Ramona walks up behind him, carrying two buckets of paints. "I found some blue and white paint." She smiles. "I want my room the same colors as the flag of my people." She then spoke something in Spanish and walked into the room that used to be Jackson's.
"Wait," Violet furrows her eyebrows. "I'm confused." She looks behind her when she heard rushed footsteps and saw DJ by her. She looks at DJ with confusion. "I thought Ramona was staying in Nicky's and Alex's old room."
"She was." DJ nods. "But the room is a lot smaller than I remembered."
Jackson sighs, turning to face his mom with a frown. "You gave away my room?"
"To give you a much bigger one." DJ smiles, but Jackson groans, rolling his eyes. "In fact, it's so big, there's enough room for you and Max."
Violet grimaces. "Yeah, this isn't gonna end well."
While Max was happy about this new arrangement, Jackson couldn't be more mad. "Now I'm living with Max?!" Jackson exclaimed, staring at his mom with disbelief.
"I'm living with Jackson?" Max excitedly asks. "This is the best day of my life!"
"Okay, here's the game plan-Ramona is moving into Jackson's room, the baby is going into Max's old room, and the two of you are moving across the hall into the..." DJ pauses for a few moments, trying to figure out how to describe the room. She smiles nervously. "Good room."
Violet glances at her best friend with concern. She doesn't think she ever seen him this mad before. He was glaring at his mom and he was breathing heavy out of anger. "Awesome!" Max smiles widely, opening his arms. "Give me a hug, roomie!" Jackson didn't hug Max back when his younger brother hugged him and in fact he tried getting out of the hug.
"Come on, Jackson." DJ encourages, smiling at her oldest son. "This will be a really good thing for you and Max."
Jackson sighs. "Why can't I just move in with Violet?"
"Because you two are both minors and there's no legal guardian at her house." DJ immediately replies in a stern voice. She smile. "Besides, sharing a room will bring you and Max closer together."
Jackson scoffs, gesturing between him and Max. "How much closer can we be?"
*****
After breakfast, Violet went back to her house to spend some time by herself. While she did enjoy spending time with the Fullers and the Gibblers sometimes she needed time to herself, but not before she ate some pieces of chocolate cake along with Kimmy and Stephanie. She had to admit she and DJ did a great job with making that cake, it was so good.
She was currently in her room, sitting on her bed and playing her teal colored ukulele. She had taught herself how to play by watching many YouTube tutorials and in her opinion she thinks she's pretty good. Violet jumped and raised her ukulele to use as a weapon, startled by the sudden knock on her window. She looked over at her window, relaxing and lowered her arm when she saw her best friend standing on her balcony.
Violet will never understand how he managed to climb up the balcony to her window. He has done it so many times that she just learned not to question it and just go along with it. She smiled at her best friend and set her ukulele on the bed beside her. She then got up to unlock and open her window. After she unlocked it and opened the window, she moved to the side, letting Jackson climb in.
Violet grimaces when she saw the annoyed look on his face once he got inside. His demeanor had changed when he first saw her, but once he was inside her room he was reminded of the change he was going through at his house and he became annoyed again. "What happened this time?"
Jackson huffs in annoyance as he sits on her purple bean bag chair in the corner of her room by a bookshelf, hugging onto a smile emoji pillow that was on the bean bag chair. "I tried convincing Max to move in with Tommy and that didn't work out. Then I tried getting my room back from Ramona and that didn't work out either."
Violet sits on her rolley chair at her desk, spinning back and forth and sympathetically smiles at him. "Guess you'll have to suck it up and move in with Max."
"No!" Jackson whines and looks at her with a pleading expression. "Help me!"
Violet laughs, shaking her head. "Jax, how would I help you out in this situation?" Jackson sulks back into the bean bag chair with a frown when he couldn't think of a suggestion and she smiles sympathetically at her best friend. "Look," Violet rolls the chair over to where Jackson sat, stopping when she was in front of him. "It might seem like the end of the world now, but I think you'll eventually like sharing a room with Max." She shrugs and smiles. "Like DJ said, it could be a good way to get you two to be closer."
Jackson's eyes widen when he thought of an idea, remembering something he talked about with his Uncle Jesse a few minutes ago. He sits up straighter, his eyes lighting up and he grins at Violet. Violet leans back, looking at him nervously. "You have an idea, don't you? Why do I get the feeling it involves me and we'll both somehow end up getting in trouble?"
****
"I knew it." Violet grumbles. She sighs heavily. "I can't believe I went along with this." She and Jackson were currently hiding in the back of Jesse's car. The both were getting annoyed because of the fact Jesse kept singing the same song over and over. Jackson had the great idea of moving with his uncle to LA and he dragged her along with him.
Jackson and Violet sit up straighter, glancing at Jesse with annoyance as he finished singing the song. "That song is so good, I could listen to it a thousand times, and I think I will." Jesse repeated the song, unbeknownst to him earning an eye roll from Jackson and Violet as they went back to their hiding places behind the seats.
"Lordy, lordy, feel my temperature rising." Jesse gets on a call with his wife. "Siri, call Becky."
"Please leave your message after the tone." An automated voice spoke.
Once the beep went off, Jesse says, "Hey, babe, I just want to tell you...Girl, girl, girl, you're going to set me on fire!"
Jackson and Violet finally had enough of it so they both sat up straighter, glaring at Jesse. "Stop!" The two teens shouted. Jesse yelled, leaning away as he looked at them with surprise and fear.
"You're going to set us on fire if you keep singing that song over and over." Violet remarked.
Jesse pulls over and parks, looking back at the teens with confusion. "What are you two doing here?"
"I'm moving to LA with my favorite uncle and best friend." Jackson smiled.
Violet raises her hands in defense. "In my defense, he forced me to go with him."
Jesse's eyes widen and he points at Jackson. "Know what you're not doing? Moving to LA with your favorite uncle and best friend."
"But if we're in the truck, you can use carpool lane." Jackson pointed out, trying to convince Jesse to let him and Violet move with him.
Jesse shrugs, smiling slightly. "Oh, that would save some time..." He shakes his head, mentally scolding himself for thinking of going along with the idea. He looks back at the teens with a stern expression. "No, get up here."
Violet climbs into the front seat first, accidentally kicking Jesse in the face which made him glare at her and shove her foot out of the wave. Jackson climbs to the front seat next, using Jesse to help him get in there by putting his hand on Jesse's face. "Alright." Jesse grimaced, shoving his hand away. It was a tight squeeze, but the best friends managed to sit in the front seat together.
"Tell me," Jesse said, looking at Jackson with concern. "Is this about losing your bedroom?"
"No, it's not just that." Jackson admits. "I-I mean, it's everything. I used to live in a house full of guys. Now, there's women everywhere. I'm outnumbered." He said worriedly. Then he glances at his best friend when he noticed the offended look on her face out of the corner of his eye. "You're not a problem though." She smiled and nodded, happy to know that.
"Trust me, living with women, you'll learn valuable lessons, like how to talk with them." Jesse nods. "I mean, take Becky and her terrible cooking for instance." Violet glances at his phone, grimacing when she saw it was still recording. Jesse was going to freak out when he realized that. "She makes this lasagna that tastes like...Uh, what's the word I'm looking for...Sweatpants."
Violet raises her eyebrows at him. "You know what sweatpants taste like?"
"And, you know, I just keep feeding it to the dog because I-I don't know how to tell her how disgusting it is." Jesse confesses. "Now our dog weighs about 300 pounds." Jesse looks at his phone with panic when it beeped, ending the call. He laughs nervously. "It was still recording."
"Sure was." Violet chuckles, smiling at him with amusement. "My advice is that you should've just been honest with her and told her you don't like her cooking 'cause now she's gonna be mad at you."
"She heard my whole conversation..." Jesse said nervously and then he grimaces. "She's going to kill me."
"Yep." Violet nods. She smiles sympathetically and salutes him. "It was nice knowing you, Jesse."
"She won't kill you if we hide out in Mexico. We could fight bulls together." Jackson suggested.
"No, no, it can't work because I don't look good in matador culottes." Jesse commented.
"Yeah, 'cause that's what's wrong with Jackson's hiding out in Mexico idea." Violet sarcastically said.
Jesse points at Jackson. "Text your mom, tell her you and Violet are with me and we're on our way home." Jackson sighs sadly and gets his phone out to text his mom. "Oh, come on, kid. We can have some fun." Jesse smiles, turning on the music. "Watch this."
Violet grimaces when the same song from before came on. "...Hunk a hunk of burning love." Jesse sang, pointing at Jackson to sing the next part and he does but he does it reluctantly.
"Ooh."
Violet's grimaced expression turns into an amused one as Jesse continues. "I said, a hunk, a hunk of burning love. Your turn, Violet." Jesse grinned, pointing at Violet.
Violet grins, playfully elbowing Jackson to try to get him to smile. "Ooh." Jackson rolled his eyes but he couldn't help the small smile that formed on his lips.
"I said, a hunk a hunk of..." Jesse looks at Jackson with a scolding expression when he saw Jackson wasn't having fun. "Get into it."
"Ooh." Jackson sang with a little more enthusiasm this time and Violet smiled widely upon seeing that small smile he had was starting to widen.
"I said, a hunk, a hunk of burning love."
****
Jesse opens the back door once they get back to the Tanner's house and the two teens walk inside first before he followed them. "We're here." Violet announced, earning surprised looks from Kimmy and Stephanie.
DJ nods, looking disappointed. "Jackson, Violet, tell Team DJ where you've been."
"Um, we were in Uncle Jesse's truck." Jackson admits. "We made it all the way to Fresno."
"These kids got the bladder of a champ." Jesse commented.
"All while Team DJ was being fabulous and flawless." DJ looked at her sister and Kimmy with a disappointed look, crossing her arms.
"Deej, I am so sorry." Stephanie apologizes, looking at her sister with an apologetic expression. She offers her drink to DJ with a sheepish smile. "Frothy cocktail?" DJ tilted her head to the side, looking at her with a glare.
"On the bright side," Kimmy chimes in. "Three out of five of the kids were right here all day." Stephanie smiled, pointing at her in a sign of agreement, but DJ didn't seem amused.
"Okay, I think we need a family meeting." DJ announces, walking towards the back door. "That means you too, Violet."
"Dang it." Violet muttered, turning away from the back door since she had planned on sneaking out.
"I know that look." Max notices the look on his mom's face. He grimaces. "I feel sorry for Team DJ."
"I can go home. I'm not in trouble, right?" Jesse asked Stephanie ,walking to the front door with his niece following him while everyone sat in the living room.
"No, I am." Stephanie frowns. "It's my first day and I blew it."
"Don't be so hard on yourself. Remember my first day?" Jesse chuckles. "I changed Michelle on a meat rack, and you and DJ were go-go dancing on top of amplifiers, eating sundaes and pizza all night."
"You were so clueless." Stephanie smiles. "It was awesome."
"Well, I learned and so will you." Jesse reassures her. "I love you, Steph." He then kissed her on the forehead.
"You too." Stephanie responded.
Jesse pulls away, glancing at everyone else with a smile. "Goodbye, everybody!"
"Bye!" Everyone waved goodbye to Jesse as he opened the door.
Jesse closes the door, getting his phone out of his pocket when it beeped. He winces. "Uh-oh. Text from Becky. 'Dear Jesse, me and the fat dog are enjoying my lasagna. Your dinner is in the doghouse where you'll be sleeping'." He nods. "You know, actually, it's worth it not to have to eat that lasagna." Violet chuckled, smiling with amusement while Jesse left the house.
"Okay," DJ turns to face everyone in the living room, pointing at them. "First things first..." She pauses, glancing at her finger with a frown. "I don't want to be a person who wags her finger while saying 'first things first', so I'll put this thing away." She lowers her arm, looking at her son and Violet with disappointment. "Guys, what were you thinking?"
"Don't be mad at Violet." Jackson quickly replies. "I forced her to go with me."
"Okay, fine." DJ sighs. "I won't be mad at Violet."
Violet smiles, looking at DJ with relief. "Thanks." Jackson sighed in relief. He would've felt so bad about getting his best friend in trouble.
"But you have to promise me you won't ever do something like that ever again." DJ pointed at Violet, looking at her with a stern voice.
Violet immediately nods. "I promise."
"And mom, you should know what I was thinking. You ran away when Stephanie moved into your room." Jackson pointed out.
DJ furrows her eyebrows. "How would you even know that?"
Jackson glances over at Stephanie with a sheepish smile. DJ turns to face her sister with a glare. Stephanie's eyes widen and she looks at DJ nervously. "Okay, in my defense, that was a small part of a much larger inspirational aunt-nephew teaching moment gone horribly wrong."
DJ turns back to her son. "To your point, I ran away to the garage. You left the county."
Jackson smiles smugly. "Hey, let's not quibble over whose runaway was better, okay?"
Violet chuckles, patting him on the shoulder. "Yeah, now's not the time to be smug."
Jackson sighs, his shoulders dropping in defeat after his mom kept looking at him with annoyance. "I know I shouldn't have left like that. I just got mad. I mean, first dad dies, then we all have to move in here. Now there's more people moving in here, and to top it all off, I lose my room."
"Jax," DJ sits on the armchair he was sitting by, rubbing his back to comfort him. "I-I know this is just tough...But you have a next door neighbor and a house full of people who love you. And as far as your room goes, I get it." She glances at her sister. "I thought moving in with this squirt was going to ruin my life." She smiles. "But we got really close sharing that room." She stands up and walks over to Stephanie. "And now you're here for me." Stephanie smiled and pulled her in for a side hug.
DJ glances at her son with a smile. "You may not see it now, but living with your brother is a blessing."
"Hey, that's kinda what I told him earlier." Violet smiled proudly and crossed her arms, proud of herself that she somewhat gave Jackson the same lesson his mom would did.
Jackson smiles a bit and glances at his mom. "Are you sure?"
Violet scoots over and smiles when she noticed Max walking over to them, letting Max sit between her and Jackson. Max smiles at Jackson. "I'm here for you, bro. Like the little bird that eats the parasites off the rhino's back." Jackson chuckled and smiled.
"Can anyone explain what this kid's talking about?" Ramona inquired.
"Nope." Violet shook her head with an amused smile on her face.
Max looks over at Ramona with offense, causing her to look at him with confusion. "It's a classic symbiotic relationship."
Violet sarcastically says, "Yeah, that clears everything up."
"Ramona, I know this is hard on you, too, with your dad and I separated," Kimmy said to her daughter from her place sitting on the armchair that Ramona sat by. She smiles, wrapping her arm around Ramona. "But as much as I'm helping DJ," She glances at DJ with a smile. "DJ's helping me." DJ smiles back at her. "I'm new at this single-parent thing." Kimmy admitted and Ramona leaned into her.
"We're all figuring this out." DJ speaks up. "So everybody has to do their part to make this new family work." She smiles at Violet when she noticed the hesitant look on her face. "You're apart of this family, Violet. Don't ever think you're not." Violet nods and smiles softly at her, her heart warming because of the fact DJ didn't want her to feel excluded. DJ glances at everyone. "But making this new family work means respect, compromise, and honest, okay?"
Smiling, Max raises his hand. "I'm in." He lowers his hand. "But I was never out." He glances at his brother with a hopeful look. "Jackson?"
Jackson rolls his eyes and smiles. "Yeah, okay."
"I'm in too." Violet chimed in, earning a smile from Max.
Max glances at Ramona with a hopeful look. "Ramona?"
Ramona sighs, standing up. "I can't believe I'm going to say this," She glances at Jackson. "But if you're so desperate to have your room back," A disgusted look forms on her face as she says, "I'll go live in the hobbit hole."
Jackson grins and fist bumps the air. "Yes!" Violet sympathetically smiled at Max and pat his shoulder to comfort him when his shoulders dropped in defeat as he frowned.
"That is so sweet of you," DJ smiles at Ramona. "But I think Jackson and Max are going to love living together."
"Oh, thank God!" Ramona sighed with relief, sitting back down on the couch.
Violet giggles a bit, amused by the two very different reactions from the boys. Jackson looks at his mom in shock and drops his head in defeat while Max had a excited look on his face
"Hey, Deej," Stephanie gets her sister's attention and guides her over to the side to talk with her. "In the spirit of honesty, um...I lost my phone in your baby's diaper and I butt-answered your call."
"What?" DJ questioned in disbelief.
"Oh, like you've never lost a phone in a diaper before." Stephanie scoffed, putting her hands on her hips.
"No." DJ shook her head.
"Once, I lost a watch in some egg salad." Kimmy chimed in, earning confused and amused looks from everyone.
Max stands up, smiling from ear to ear. "You know what we need? A group hug! Come on!" He ran over to hug his mom and soon everyone got up and joined in on the hug.
"Sorry, I forgot my lucky sunglasses." Jesse apologizes as he walks into the house during the hug. He walks past the group hug after closing the door and he smiles. "I knew there would be a hug." He continues to walk towards the kitchen, pausing when he realized something. He turns to face the others with confusion. "Is it just me or do you hear violins?"
