Chapter 32

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

"Do you really wanna go there?"

 ***

 "I'm gonna ask again."

The air in the little bunker we were gathered in was smothering, but my glare didn't waver, even if this was the ten-thousandth time I have questioned this man, "where did you get the watch."

"Chomouda are Yu kom Skaikru?" Was the response I got, and I growled, balling my fists as Phia stepped forward from her spot leaning lazily against the wall.

"Ai owe emo." She drawled, the strange language sounding like gibberish to my ears. I made a pact the first time I questioned this Grounder that I would learn their language eventually. It was driving me crazy not knowing what to say.

"Yu are a natrona." His tone became harsh, but Phia didn't falter.

"Perhaps Ai laik, ba Yu better tell Nataniel chit he gaf in gon get in."

The man sighed deeply, hanging his head. When he looked back up at me, his one eye was smoldering, and his lips were drawn into a tight line. "I told you, I found it outside of your camp."

"That's bullshit," I leaned closer hearing Finn's sounds of repulse. I raised the watch that was gripped in my hand right in front of his eye, my words low and dangerous. I have never really felt like this before, because I have never had a reason too. This man knows something about where Clarke is, and I'll be damned if I don't figure out where that place is. "Where is the girl who was wearing this watch?"

 No response.

I scoffed, "I'm sorry, do you want a physical description? Let's see, um..." I backed up a step, "blonde, pale, about-" I held my hand up to my chin, "yea high."

"Okay, this is excruciating." Murphy groaned dramatically, throwing his head back, "he is obviously lying, maybe you should stop asking so nicely-"

"Shut up, Murphy." Bellamy and I said at the exact same time. It was the other boy who decided to speak next, and his voice was naturally more scary than mine.  "We know you took our friends, we know. Just tell us where they are."

Finn seemed to have other ideas, as before I could react, he mumbled something under his breath and brushed past me, taking the handgun from his belt and smashing it into the Grounder's forehead. I jumped, my heart flying to my throat in shock as Finn yelled. "Answer the damn question!"

"Holy-" I cursed loudly as Bellamy and I rushed forward, each of us grabbing one of Finn's arms and hoisting him back. Finn's face turned an unnatural shade of red as he struggled in our grip, "where is the girl who was wearing the watch?"

"Finn, stop!" Bellamy rose his voice to be heard over the commotion. Finn's arm flew up as soon as I loosened my grip, and I jerked backward to avoid being smacked, accidentally falling against Monroe, who squealed and shoved my back away.

 "Sorry."

"You don't want to do this," Bellamy warned, as my face burned red and I crossed my arms awkwardly. "There are some lines you can't uncross."

I turned back to Monroe, "again, sorry."

Finn took a deep breath, his chest rising. Bellamy waited a moment, and I watched carefully until Finn's face turned back to a normal color. Bellamy flashed me a look, and I nodded, portraying that I thought it would be okay to let him go.

Listening to me was his first mistake.

Finn surged forward, his fists flying and hitting the Grounder, sending his head flying to the side, blood spurting across the walls and across Finn's face.

"Shit!" I yelled, as Finn screamed bloody murder at our captor.

"Where is Clarke? Where is she?"

I reached up and snagged the back of Finn's elbow, making him whirl around, and slam the still moving fist right into my nose.

I reeled back in surprise, hot pain shooting up my nose and right into my brain. Finn's rage-induced punched hurt a lot in case you were wondering. I lifted my hand up to my upper lip, and they came back lightly coated in red.

"What the hell is wrong with you!" Bellamy yelled, his voice raised so loud it made Murphy cover his ears. Finn had his shotgun aimed at Bellamy's forehead, so I took a soft step forward, holding out my arms cautiously when the gun was directed at me.

"Finn," I made my voice as soft as possible, blood dripping down my lips. Finn's eyes were wide and crazy, like he had suddenly gone psycho. Seeing blood dripping down my face didn't seem to offer any remorse, and that made me a little more freaked out. "Finn, put the gun down."

"Three seconds!" Finn barked, putting the gun to the Grounder's head. Bellamy, seeming to forget that Finn was losing his mind, walked over to me and situating his fingers under my chin so he could take in the blood running down my face.

 "Three-"

"It's not broken," I didn't mean to whisper, but I did, and Bellamy and I both turned to look over at Finn.

 "Two-"

"Okay!" The Grounder gave in, his eye shutting and his features scrunching up. "Your friends are east of here, at the field where we keep our prisoners of war."

"Prisoners of war?" I repeated, although part of me was relieved that no one would have to get shot today. I nervously raked my hand through my hair, "how do we get to them?"

"I'll draw you a map, but you should hurry, as they will soon outlive their usefulness."

My throat turned dry, and my heart leaped to my throat, but I still managed to choke out a sentence, directed to no one in particular. "Get him something to draw a map."

I would have done it myself, but I don't think I can move.

"And you thought I was the crazy one, huh?" Murphy muttered as he walked past me, his lips curling into a smirk. I tensed, crossing my arms so tight that it sent tremors up my shoulders. Murphy was crazy, and I never thought that Finn the peacemaker would follow in his footsteps.

After a few minutes, I forced my legs to move over to the Grounder, snatching the yellowed paper from his grasp and flipping it over. There were lines and arrows that I could make little sense of, but it was definitely a map. I handed the stationary over to Bellamy, who pursed his lips, nodding slightly in satisfaction. "Gather up your gear, we're leaving."

"What about him?" Sterling's timid voice asked as Finn finished tying a gag over his mouth. I glanced behind me, watching Phia with careful eyes.

"We leave him." I decided, seeing a small, but curt nod from the girl in return. "We'll deal with him when we come back."

"Hey, what if he escapes?" Murphy asked, rising from his spot on a dirty couch, "he knows exactly where we're going."

"We're not killing him," Bellamy shot back, crossing his arms and narrowing his eyes at the implied idea from Murphy.

Murphy scoffed, running his hand over his face, "I don't see another option, if we leave him here, it is going to blow right back into our face, and you know it."

"He's unarmed, Murphy!" I snapped, the cold, compacted walls not doing much for my anxiety.

"He's a Grounder," his eyes flashed over to Phia, who was examining her knife like she couldn't care less if one of her own people was killed, "no offense."

 "None taken."

"We are not doing this!" Bellamy repeated, the anger returning in his voice, making it lower, "end of discussion!"

Murphy's eyes were murderous as he stepped forward until he was almost directly beside me, I took a half-step away, but trained my gaze on Murphy's hands. He didn't have a weapon, bit I had a feeling that wouldn't stop him if he really wanted to hurt Bellamy. "What happened to you? You're talking like you've never killed a Grounder before-"

"That was different and you know it!" I intervened, tapping my foot on the ground, "that was a battle, this would be an execution."

A loud bang cut off our argument, and I am pretty sure my heart stopped beating for at least three seconds. I turned my head, my eyes widening to the point it was almost comical at the scene in front of me. Finn held a smoking gun in his hand, the Grounder in front of him slumped lifelessly with a burning red bullet hole in his head.

"What-" I muttered, my throat dry and my entire body stiff and still. "Finn-"

The watch around his wrist glistened, and I had the strange urge to take it from him, but didn't, as I didn't want to be the next one shot.

"Let's get going." Finn brushed past us, no emotion or remorse in his eyes as he climbed out. Nobody moved for a few moments, until Phia stalked past us, right toward the body. I was worried she was going to get mad, and lightly began to push Bellamy toward the exit. Instead, she lean down, brushed her fingers over the skin of the Grounder's head, and whispered a phrase in her unknown language.

 "Yu gonplei ste odon."

 ***

"Are you okay?"

My eyes glanced up at Bellamy, who was looking down at me with a nervous expression clouding over his eyes.  I had been furiously rubbing at the skin between my nose and lips for a few minutes now, trying to get the rapidly drying blood off, although I don't know how successful I was being. "What? Oh, yeah I'm fine, Finn's kinda an asshole, though."

Bellamy eyes traveled apprehensively over to the boy, who was walking at the front of our group with purposeful strides. "You probably shouldn't let him hear you say that."

I would have laughed, but I knew he was right, "yeah, I don't wanna get shot."

 "Don't joke about that."

I cocked an eyebrow, "what, you think I'd like to be shot?" I asked, a small smirk tugging at my lips. "You really don't know me that well, Blake."

Bellamy scoffed lightly, taking his eyes off of the tree's just long enough to look at me, his facial features amused, but his eyes holding something different. "I never know with you, Sunshine."

 "Good, I like being mysterious."

The sun beat down intensely as the day went on, flushing my cheeks and pinning my messy hair to my forehead, the rest curling ruthlessly. Phia was the only one who didn't seem bothered by the heat, swinging her knife around and humming under her breath. I don't understand why she is still with us, why she hasn't turned us in to her people yet, but I seem to be the only person who trusts her, even if it is only a little bit.

"Keep your eyes peeled!" Bellamy shouted to the group, "this is Grounder territory."

"Everywhere is Grounder territory," The Grounder herself replied, her lips set in a tight line. Bellamy rolled his eyes slightly, but Murphy nodded in agreement.

"Yeah, I can't keep moving like this! We don't even know if the guy Finn killed is telling the truth." His head turned to look at Phia, who was walking off to his side, as far from the rest of us as possible. "I bet Sunshine's buddy over there could help us out."

I rolled my eyes, it's weird when Murphy calls me that and he knows it. As for Phia, she didn't respond for a full minute, walking in silence. "We have many places we keep our prisoners, it is impossible to keep track of them all."

 "That's-"

"Keep moving!" Finn barked, whirling around and grabbing Murphy's collar the second he stopped walking. We all stopped. None of us wanted to piss Finn off after he killed that Grounder without blinking, but I figured if anyone was going to do it, it might as well be me. I walked forward, lightly pushing his hand away from Murphy.

"Dude, chill. Give them a minute," I looked over at Sterling and Monroe, who were both panting for air.

"We can't!" He snapped, making me unintentionally wince. "You heard what that Grounder said! They'll outlive their usefulness!"

"I heard what he said when you had a gun pointed at his head!" I argued, my anger flaring. Finn talks about 'that Grounder' like he didn't just murder him in cold blood. Like he didn't just pull the trigger and snuff out a life without even a blink.

"You know he would have followed us! You know he would have killed us all!"

I growled under my breath, my gaze yet again being drawn in to the gleaming watch around his wrist. "I know that that-" I jabbed my finger at the object, "shouldn't be with you."

 "Clarke-"

"I want to find Clarke as much, if not more, than you do!" I snapped, taking a step forward, even though I am pretty sure he was gonna hit me again soon. "And I know damn well that she wouldn't want you killing people for her."

Finn's nostrils flared, and Bellamy took that as his cue to step in, separating Finn and I with his arms, his eyes flashing between the two of us, who were having an awful good time glaring at the other. I was testing to see if I could knock him out with the intensity of my gaze, and I had a feeling I was getting close.

 "Stop it! Both of you!"

I was tempted to mutter a 'he started it,' but that would just make me look stupid, so I didn't. Instead, I stepped down, taking a half-step backward and allowing Bellamy to remove his hand from my arm.

"Uh, you guys?" Monroe muttered nervously. I turned my head, seeing that her face had drained of all color, and her gun was pointed cautiously at the bushes. I furrowed my brow, walking toward her when I spotted a foot sticking out from the bushes. It was a body, a burnt, bloody body.

There were a lot of them.

"Oh God-" I gasped, feeling my stomach churn as I took in all of the bodies scattered around us. They were from the Ark, that I could tell by the clothing, and I was only now realizing the smoke that was pouring up from off the edge of a drop-off.

"Where the hell are they from?" Murphy questioned, as the rest of the group fell in to a tight formation, and we began walking forward.

"Skaikru," Phia mumbled, "they are your people, from space."

Despondence weighed down on our heads, as intense as the sun, as we continued our trek up the uneven path. Swarms of flied buzzing around the clusters of bodies. I didn't dare look at them, worried that I would see someone I knew. We reached the top, the steep cliff preventing us from going any farther. At the bottom, wedged into the rock, was an Ark station. It smoked, and pieces were scattered all up through the incline, some  shooting so high they were behind us.

"That's a rough landing." Murphy commenting.

"There is nothing we can do for these people," Bellamy said, swallowing thickly. Remorse pushed down my shoulders for all of these people. People who just wanted to see Earth. Something that could never happen for them now. "We gotta go."

Finn didn't hesitate, his footsteps leading the way back up to the woods. I forced my feet to follow, but before I could get far, Monroe gasped loudly.

"Guys, there is someone down there!"

My feet turned before my brain could process what was happening, and my feet skidding on the rocks as I moved to peer over the edge. Far down, clutching on to a jutted out branch, was a girl. I couldn't make out any facial features, but her pleads for help could be heard from here.

I turned to glance back at Bellamy, who's eyes were widened like he couldn't believe anyone could have possibly survived the explosion. I can't help but agree.

"Looks like we're gonna take a short break."
