It was eerily quiet in the Hargreeves mansion, so quiet that it was like no one else lived here besides Klaus. He sat silently on the floor as I sat behind him on the bed, softly drying his hair with a towel and being careful not to hurt him.
He was so broken, so numb and just dead. Klaus had a distant look in his eyes as his face was devoid of any emotion. I knew that his mind was empty right now but his heart was hurting. I knew that he didn't want to feel anymore and I hated it. I didn't want anyone else to go through the things that I have before.
He just sat there with his legs stretched out in his leather tights and arms laying in his lap like a switched-off robot. Like if he sat still enough, he could become one and just let the world move on without him so he didn't have to feel pain or sadness anymore. He didn't want to live this life but didn't want to die as well. I knew he wanted to just run away from all this.
I hated seeing him like this.
It was like looking in a mirror.
Klaus sighed out, closing his eyes as he relaxed in my hands as I ran my fingers through his hair gently. I slowly got up and carefully moved his head back against the bed to rest knowing that it probably felt heavy like a bowling ball from all the crying, grabbing his shirt and sitting behind him on the bed again. I carefully put his shirt on him, moving his arms through the sleeves before leaning down and wrapping my arms around his neck to hug him. He sighed out again like he let out all his pain in that single heavy breath, tears falling down his face again as he held my arms. I got down from the bed with my arms still around Klaus, sitting down next to him as he laid his head on my shoulder while I hugged him.
I suddenly hear someone knock on Klaus' bedroom door and I look up to see Five looking at us with a worried look. "Are you ok?" the lanky brother perks up, breaking out of the state he was in and slowly getting up. His body creaked as he struggled to get on his feet but I quickly got up and held him steady.
"Hey. Yeah, I just... Long night."
"More than one from the looks of it." I frown, shaking my head at Five and he drops his smile.
"Yeah."
"Don't remember the dog tags."
"Yeah, they belonged to a friend." I set Klaus down on his bed, sitting down next to him.
"How about that new tattoo?"
"You know I don't totally remember even getting it. Like I said, it was a long night."
"You did it, didn't you?" I sigh out in annoyance, unravelling the towel from my head and holding it in my hands. I had to take a shower to wash off all the blood that stained me and my clothes.
"What are you talkin' about?"
You know, I can recognize the symptoms, Klaus." Five continues to push his brother, asking him multiple questions.
"Symptoms of what?"
"The jet lag. Full body itch. Headache that feels like someone shoved a box of cotton up into your nose and through your brain. You gonna tell me about it?"
"Five." I hissed at him, warning him to back off but Klaus pats my arm to let me know it was ok.
"Your pals, when they broke into the house and they couldn't find you, they took me hostage instead." Klaus glares at Five.
"And in return, you stole their briefcase." the smaller brother nods, thinking he had a briefcase not in his possession but god was he so wrong.
"Yeah. I thought there was money in it, or I could pawn it, you know, whatever. And then I opened it." Klaus explains and Five starts pacing.
"And the next thing you knew, you were... where? Or should I say when?"
"What difference does it make?"
"What diff-uh-okay, how long were you gone?"
"Almost a year."
"A year!? Do you know what this means?"
"Yeah, I'm ten months older now."
"No, this isn't any sort of joke, Klaus!" Five starts scolding his brother, explaining to him how Hazel and Cha-Cha will do whatever they can to get the briefcase and I had enough.
"Five! Enough!" I yell at him and he jumps. "I'm going to get you something to eat ok." I speak softly to Klaus and he nods, letting me lay him down on the bed before I drape the blankets over him so he could rest.
I quickly shove Five out of the bedroom and he stumbles forwards as I close the door behind me, following me as I throw the towel in the laundry hamper. "Wait! I have to ask him where the briefcase is!"
"Enough with the interrogation! He's gone through enough as it is." I pull him with me down to the kitchen and away from the bedroom, my hand holding his wrist tightly. "He destroyed it."
"He what!?" Five was about to teleport back to Klaus' room but I stopped him, tugging on his arm harshly to keep him in his place.
"Just stop! It's gone now so just leave him out of it!" I was so close to snapping and I take in a deep breath, quickly letting him go before I hurt him. Five stared at me with wide eyes as I got to the kitchen and started to make a sandwich for Klaus. "Just give him some time-"
"-we don't have time (y/n)!" I slam the knife into the cutting board, trying to calm down. "I need it so I could go back. So I could start over!" I could feel the tears threatening to escape and I heave in a shaky breath.
"I-I know. Five, he just lost someone. Someone he loved. Losing someone you love is enough to make any man break. I know you can understand so please," I hastily wipe my tears away but they keep falling. "please just let him be." I sniffle.
God, why am I crying?
It's not like I lost someone.
Just stop crying!
Stop being so pathetic!
"(y/n)..." I couldn't bear to look at Five after hearing him call for me so softly behind me. I finish making the sandwich and I walk back up the stairs to the bedroom, making sure he didn't see my face as I entered the room quietly.
I place the plate down on the bedside table next to Klaus. "Klaus." I shake him gently and he turns around. I quickly turn around, looking down at my feet so he couldn't see me and I hear rustling behind me.
"Thank you so much (y/n)." I feel him hug me and I awkwardly pat his head.
"Just rest ok." I see Five standing by the doorway and Klaus lets me go. I briskly walk past the boy as he held a note in his hand. He grabs my wrist, stopping me from walking away and I rush to wipe my tears away with my other hand.
"(y/n)-"
I tug my hand out of his grip but he holds on to me tighter. "I'm fine-"
"-no you're not-"
"-yes I am. Don't worry about me." I finally get Five to let me go. "I'll be at Vanya's. Make sure to come and get me before you face Hazel and Cha-Cha." I walk off out of the house in my hoodie and trackies since my clothes were being dried, leaving Five behind.
I stood outside of Vanya's apartment, hopping from foot to foot as I psyched myself into trying to phase through the door. I place my hands on the door, gritting my teeth as I pushed myself against it.
Come on!
I shove my way through the heavy tar feeling, pushing back one foot behind the other and I fall to the floor with a loud gasp when I managed to drop into the other side. I groan softly from the slight pain, standing up and walking towards her couch when Vanya starts playing her violin beautifully.
She stops halfway through, her eyes landing on where I was. "(y/n)?"
How did she know I was here?
I look down to where she was staring and saw the dent I was making on the couch arm as I leaned my arm on it. "Are you here?"
"I'm here Vanya..." I couldn't help but feel to feel helpless when she didn't hear me. I sat down on the couch, my weight pushing the cushion down and she smiles brightly.
"I've missed you (y/n)! There's something I want to tell you!" Vanya goes on a rant about how she met the kindest and most amazing person and I smile sadly.
Oh, how I wish I could protect you from him Vanya.
"(y/n), are you ok?" I look up to see her frowning. "I don't know how but I feel like you're sad." and that's when the waterworks switched on. I burst out in tears and she sat next to me on the couch. "You're crying." She saw droplets on her floor and she frowned even more.
"I feel so useless Vanya. I feel like I'm not doing anything right. I keep messing up and I can't help anyone. Everyone keeps hurting and I can't stop it. I don't know why I keep feeling like a burden. I don't know why I keep crying like this. I just want it to stop. I don't want to feel like this anymore. I hate it so much. I just don't want to feel anymore."
"I know that you must be feeling terrible at the moment, especially with the apocalypse right now but you are doing everything you can to help Five stop it. You're so brave (y/n), getting up to go against people that are trying to stop you. And I know that we don't know each other that well, but always know that I'm here for you ok. Like you said, if I'm not there, just imagine me being your secret guardian." I chuckle lowly, smiling and Vanya grins seeing the droplets stop appearing on the floor.
"Hey, you stopped crying! I did something right!" she jumps up. "Let me play something for you." she goes to pick up her violin and she starts playing a slow melody.
"Thank you so much Vanya." I sat there for a while, listening to her play her beautiful music when it gets interrupted by someone knocking on the door.
Vanya puts her violin down and goes to open the door to reveal Five. "Hey." He waves at me and I wave back.
"Hey..." I get up and stand beside his sister.
"So (y/n) was actually here!" Vanya gasps, a wide smile on her face.
"You knew?" Five asks and she nods.
"I could feel that she was here."
"Can you tell her thank you for cheering me up? And that she plays the violin absolutely beautifully. She has a God-given talent. Also, good luck for her audition, she's gonna kill it and get the spot!" Five repeats what I said and Vanya smiles warmly.
He takes off his blazer and gives it to me so I put it on, turning to face his sister so I could show her I was there. "Is that you (y/n)?" Five nods and I wrap my arms around Vanya for a hug. "Thank you." She hugs me back even though she can't feel me. She lets me go and I wave goodbye as I followed her brother out.
"Ready?" Five asks me and I shrug, which makes him unsure if he could grab my arm but I raise it up for him to hold. He breathes out softly and nods, letting me close my eyes before he teleports us back to the house. "Careful." he holds me still as I groan in discomfort, blinking away and coming back with a glass of water which he hands to me.
"Thanks..." I take the glass, moving to sit down on his bed and that's when I noticed that his bedroom walls were entirely covered with equations, even the floor.
I quickly lift my feet up to avoid scuffing the markings. "I think I've got something... It's tenuous, but promising." Five says and I look around to notice Dolores was missing.
"Where's Dolores?"
"...I actually let her go... I took her back to where she needed to be..." he mumbles out, turning away and I narrow my eyes at him.
This isn't supposed to happen!
He put the mannequin back in the store already!?
Before I could say anything, Luther walks into the room. "Who you talkin' to? What is all this-oh hey (y/n)!" Luther grins as he smiles at me and I realise I was still wearing Five's blazer. I wave back while his smaller brother tells him what a probability map is.
"It's a probability map of whose death could save the world. I've narrowed it down to four." Five taps his wall.
"Are you saying one of these four people causes the apocalypse?" Luther asks.
"No, I'm saying that their death might prevent it."
"Oh... I'm not following..." Five sighs out before explaining.
"Time is fickle, Luther. The slightest alteration in events can lead to massively different outcomes in the time continuum."
"The butterfly effect." I mumble out and he points at me.
"Exactly. So all I have to do is find the people with the greatest probability of impacting the timeline, wherever they may be, and kill them."
"Oh, yeah... Milton Greene. So who's he, a terrorist or something?"
"I believe he is a gardener."
Luther quickly turns to Five in shock. "You can't be serious! Wait, this is madness, Five. You-where'd you get that?" the boy suddenly pulls out a case with a rifle in it and I raise a brow at this, watching him easily set it up like a pro.
Damn, son...
"In Dad's room. I think he used it to shoot a rhinoceros. It's similar to the model I used at work. Nice shoulder fit and highly reliable."
Should I be finding this hot?
"But you can't-this guy Milton is just an innocent man!"
"It's basic math. His death could potentially save the lives of billions. If I did nothing, he'd be dead in four days anyway. The apocalypse won't spare anyone."
"We don't do this kind of thing!"
"We are not doing anything. I am." I realised Five was willing to do this for his family, to take another life so none of them would be scarred with the guilt he's gone through before, to save them from the trauma of taking their first life.
"I can't let you go and kill innocent people! No matter how many lives you'll save."
"Well, good luck stopping me." Five looks at me and I get up to go with him.
"You're not going anywhere." Luther says but I wonder what he was gonna use against his brother if Dolores wasn't-
"-hey what the fuck!?" I scream out when I suddenly get picked up, holding tightly onto Five's blazer when Luther hung me out the window holding the blazer. "Luther!" I scream at him and his brother quickly aims the rifle at him.
"Put... her... down." Five warns, looking at me warily and I glance over at high we were up.
"Put the gun down. You're not killing anyone. Don't make me do this. It's either her or the gun. You decide." I hold on for dear life, trying to reach the railing with my foot but I was held way past it. Even the dumpster wasn't below me to somewhat cushion my fall if gorilla man thinks of dropping me!
It was a stalemate and I look at Luther. "Don't do it! Don't you fucking dare-" I scream when he throws me out the window, trying to grab onto the ladder and I hear a whoosh before arms grab me. My vision blurs blue and the wind whistles around me with a second whoosh, my breath knocked out of my lungs as my back slams against the bedroom floor.
"(y/n)!" Five breathes out in relief, hovering above me as he held my cheeks and I groan out in pain.
"I can't believe that fucking asshole threw me out the goddamn window!" I yell at Luther.
"I know you're still a good person, Five. Otherwise, you wouldn't have risked everything coming back here to save us all." Five looks at me softly when his brother said that and I look at him with wide eyes. He quickly looks away and stands up, holding my arm and helping me up on my feet after.
I quickly take off Five's blazer and start waking Luther as he stumbles back. "You jackass!"
"(y/n)! I'm sorry-stop-I get it!" he gets whiplash after whiplash before I suddenly get picked up from behind.
"Put me the fuck down!" I scream at Five as he carries me away, kicking in anger and trying to pry his hands off from around me. "Let me go! Luther cannot just throw me out the damn window and fucking live!" I shrill, fucking furious!
"As much as I would love to see that, we need to go. Now behave." I snarl at the boy as he sets me down on my feet. "Behave." he narrows his eyes at me and I scoff, looking away to hide my growing blush from his demands and how he manhandled me.
"...Fine. I need to go get my clothes from the dryer-" Five blinks and comes back with my clothes, turning me around and walking me to the closest bathroom before he closes the door. I roll my eyes and change into my cargo pains, black shirt and leather jacket-pouting at the rips and scuff marks on it-before lacing up my boots and I walk out. He stands up straight when he was waiting for me and we head down the stairs, walking out of the house to see Luther waiting for us in a car just parked in front of us.
Five opens the door for me and I get in, him joining me in the back after and we drive off to the meeting area with our two favourite assassins.
