I laced up my boots and threw on my leather jacket, grabbing my bag filled with things that I thought we would need as Five waited for me. He was staring at the eyeball again, brows furrowed and I sigh.
I shouldn't do this.
"We need to go to MeriTech and visit Lance again." I wince out, praying that I don't ruin anything and the boy looks at me in surprise.
"I thought you said-"
"-I know! But I didn't tell you why. We can say it's just a friendly visit." I shrug and he nods, moving to zip up the duffel bag that had Dolores in it before opening up his window.
"After you." Five smirks at me, bowing before the open window and I roll my eyes at him with a smile.
"Nice to know chivalry isn't dead. Especially when jumping out of windows." I chuckle, stepping out onto the railing carefully as he held my hand and I peer over the edge to see Klaus shuffling around in a dumpster beneath me.
"Hey (y/n)!" Ben calls out from above me as he was sitting on the railing and I wave back with a smile.
"Hi Ben!" Five climbs out of his window after and soon climbs down the ladder first, waiting for me as I carefully climb down and land safely on the floor next to him.
"I'd ask what you're up to, Klaus, but then it occurred to me... I don't care." Five says.
"Klaus, what the hell are you doing?" the smoking man-child turns around to the both of us and grins brightly, proceeding to try and climb out of the dumpster but failing.
"My favourite Crazy!" he opens his arms, ready to hug me but I run behind his brother who didn't give two shits about what was going on.
"Klaus, no. You're in a dumpster." he pouts at me before smiling again.
"You know there are easier ways out of the house, buddies?"
"This one involved the least amount of talking. Or so I thought." Five started to walk by Klaus as he leans over with a flask in his hand.
"You need any more company today? I could, uh... clear my schedule." the lanky man hands me his flask and I take a swig before giving it back to him.
"Looks like you've got your hands full." The Boy retorts back and the Seance dismisses him saying he can do whatever he was doing, another time. He falls down in the dumpster, searching for something and pops back up with a half-eaten donut.
"Yeah, no. I'm not letting you do that." before Klaus could even take a bite, I grab that disgusting donut and yeet it all the way down the alleyway. "As fun as this was, we have some pending doom we gotta stop. Bye guys!" Five and I walk away with Klaus yelling behind us about loving us even if we can't love ourselves. "We gotta be quick. Lance is going to work soon." Five opens the door for me to a random plumbing van that was parked in front of us, letting me climb in before he goes around to get into the driver's side. He drives off haphazardly and I cling to the door for dear life. "Do not kill us!" I hiss at him as he speeds down the road.
"I'm not a bad driver-" I gasp when Five swerves, avoiding a car and barely missing a pole.
"Yes, you are! You almost just crashed us!" I exclaim back. The drive was quick, too quick as we stopped sharply on the side of a road a little away from the lab to not be suspicious. I clutch my shirt as my heart was racing from the fear of crashing while the boy next to me looked all fine! I run my hands down my face, calming my breathing and relaxing in the van while waiting. We soon see Lance walk to work with a tray of coffee in his hand while adorning that stupid white lab coat, looking around carefully before entering the building.
"Here. It's a bit cold today." Five says as turns around in his seat to pull out a blanket and Dolores from his bag, draping the blanket over me and setting the mannequin between us.
"Oh nice, you got wine. Low budget date but I'm not complaining." I joke as I take out the bottles of wine, other empty bottles spilling out and I raise a brow at Five knowing he had been drinking. A lot. I open one wine bottle and guzzle it down empty when I notice The Boy looking at me with wide eyes. "Oh chill, I was born with a ridiculously high tolerance."
"Well maybe later, you would be up for a challenge?" Five says with a smug smile in his trademark shorts, grinning at me and I raise a brow at him.
"You wanna bet? I can easily wipe the floor with you. Try me." I grin, up for that challenge.
"Then it's on." Five suddenly turns his head around to face Dolores, frowning at her. "No, we're not drunk. We're working. Yes, it's about the eye thing."
"So you two still married or what?" I pick up a hidden bottle of vodka that was sitting behind my chair, noticing that the seal was unopened.
Jackpot.
"Not officially but I would like to think we were back then. Been together for twenty years but we split two years ago."
Wait what?
Five and Dolores are supposed to still be together.
Since when did they get divorced!?
"Wait, so you both divorced? Two years ago?" I ask and Five nods.
This is different...
"That's sad." I say, unscrewing the cap of the vodka bottle and going straight for it. "Wait, so you're just friends?"
"Yeah. We have been together through a lot, haven't we Dolores?"
"Why did you two split?" Five furrows his brows at the question, pursing his lips.
"Not really sure. We just went our separate ways really. Different ideologies."
"You both have the sanest and most calm relationship I've ever seen anyone have. Actual goals you two I swear. Like out of a movie!" Five rolls his eyes, taking the bottle away from me and hiding it. "Nooooo my baby!" I grumble under my breath, sitting back in my seat in annoyance.
"We just have to wait."
"Yeah, I ain't doing that. Look, he's not coming back out until it's nighttime. He's going to come out with a bag full of prosthetics, hand 'em over to some stranger in a car for cash and then go home." I get out of the van, stretching. I did not want to stay cooped up in that van all day! "Let's get him tomorrow when he's taking his dog for a walk." I tell Five as he looked at me through the window, him narrowing his eyes at me.
"We don't have time to waste-"
"-I get that but don't you think doing some equations right now instead of wasting hours looking at a building is better?" I could see him think this through before he nods in agreement. "Great! You can use my laptop for however long you can before it dies."
"I won't miss anything important today?" Five asks as he gets out of the van and I shake my head.
"Nope. Now come on!" I beg him and he moves back into the van to grab the bag with Dolores, stepping back out again but his eyes widen and I remember what was about to happen. "Shit-"
"-(y/n)...? (y/n)!?" he panics, looking around for me desperately but he couldn't see me, his mind stuck in the apocalypse. "(y/n)!" I rush over to him as he tears up, trying to look for me and I hold his cheeks gently to pull his head to face me.
"I'm here! Five I'm right here! I didn't go anywhere!"
"I can't see you-where are you!?" I grab his hand and pull him behind the van, away from the bypasses.
I hold his hands and he trembles in front of me. "I'm right in front of you. Just close your eyes. I'm right here. You're in 2019, not the apocalypse. Just close your eyes." He does as I ask, holding my hands tightly. "We're near a bakery. Can you smell the warm bread? The sweet cupcakes and cakes?" Five nods hesitantly. "They're making a new batch of buttery croissants and sourdough. We're close to a park too. There are children playing in the playground behind us. Can you hear them?" We hear the sound of happy screams from the children, hearing the creak of the metal swings. "We are out on the streets in front of MeriTech ok. Do you hear the cars and the people?" cars zoom past us as people do too, talking on their phones or to other people and Five nods. He lets out a shaky breath, letting the sounds and the smells bring him back. "You're safe Five. We're in New York. You're here with me..." I whisper to him, holding his face dearly and he opens his teary eyes. They shine brighter and he breathes in relief when he could see me. "I'm right here." he holds my hands on his cheeks, holding them tight to feel my hands in his.
He leans into my touch and my heart breaks seeing how scared he was. "I'm here... I'm here in New York... I'm here with (y/n)..." he repeats, nodding to himself before he moves to lean back against the van as he looks around him. He breathes out slowly to calm himself down, running his fingers through his hair before looking at me. "Thank you..." I shake my head, smiling at him softly.
"As long as you're ok..." Five looks at me with wide eyes when I said that and before he could say anything, we hear someone else calling for him.
"Five!" it was Luther. "You ok?" The smaller brother narrows his eyes at his bigger brother.
"You shouldn't be... How did you find me?" Five asks and Luther nods behind his smaller brother, all three of us turning around to see Klaus waving with a big smile on his face. "You can't be here! I'm in the middle of something!" Five hisses at his brothers.
"Any luck finding your one-eyed man?" Klaus asks.
"What's he talkin' about?" Luther asks and Five rolls his eyes.
"Does it matter? It's Klaus." The Boy sighs out before looking at the Spaceboy. "What do you want, Luther?"
"Grace may have had something to do with Dad's death. So I need you to come back to the academy, all right? It's important."
"'It's important.'" Five scoffs mocking. "You have no concept of what's important!" Klaus says his line about waxing his ass with chocolate pudding and I laugh behind my hand while Five ignores him. Luther tells off Klaus, wondering why he was still here and the both of them argue about having serious conversations-or inability to. "Luther's got a point, go away." Five says and Klaus pouts, Five and Luther having their somewhat civil conversation.
"I'm going to grab some snacks, you want anything, dear Crazy?" the lanky man asks me as he heads over to the store near us and I shrug.
"I don't know, surprise me." he grins at me with his thumbs up, jogging into the store to rob the place.
"We're all you have. And you know it." I finally listen into the conversation even though I know what it was about.
I don't think that I'm better than you, Number One. I know I am." Five sneers up at Luther. "I've done unimaginable things, things you couldn't even comprehend. Just to get back here and save you all." Just then, Klaus rushes out with a loud cheer, his arms full of stolen food and he throws something towards me to catch before running away. I wince when he almost gets hit by a car. "Now I'm starting to wonder if that was the wisest decision." Five sighs out, moving to walk away from Luther when he calls out to him but the smaller brother ignores the bigger one. "Let's go." he nods to me, heading for the driver seat of the van but I pull him away.
"It's a beautiful day outside. Let's go for a walk Five. Enjoy this before we get lazy and stay cooped up in your house." I grab his hand and we walk down the pathway, actually enjoying the sun and not artificial light. There was a comfortable silence between us, the air filled with life and vehicles driving past.
I feel Five step closer to me as an elderly couple walks by us. "Look how cute they are!"
Wait, someone can see me!?
"I remember being so young and in love like that." I could feel my cheeks burn and I quickly let go of Five's hand but he grabs it again.
"Wha-" I hold in my breath as I look down, Five entwining his fingers with mine and holding my hand tightly in his. I gape up at him and I notice his cheeks also burning red but he had a stupid grin on his face as he was avoiding to look at me. I don't know why, but I lay my head on his shoulder, stepping closer to the very shy and flustered boy.
I was in the kitchen, making some peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches for both Five-since he asked so nicely-and I.
I just want to try this and see if it actually tastes good as people say.
I walk out with two plates, the boy's cold sandwich and mine, the bread nice and toasty with melted peanut butter and marshmallows.
I actually want Smores now.
"Thank you so much (y/n)."
"No problem. I wanted to try this for a long while now." I hand Five his plate and I sit next to him on the couch. We were apparently in a secret room he found when he was younger. It was normal sized for a living room, furnished with sofas, a large screen TV, coffee table, some shelves and a mini-fridge that had food in it besides the small kitchen as well.
"How'd you find this room?" I snuggled in the blanket as the TV ran in the background.
"I got bored one day and decided to play around with my powers. I wanted to see where I would teleport to without thinking of a destination and I ended up in here."
"And how did you get all this stuff?"
"I stole it from around the house." I snort softly at how Five was typing away furiously on my laptop, sounding so serious.
"You really got the hang of using my laptop."
"It's pretty simple, but there's so much more to learn."
"Keep at it, Sheldon. I believe in you." I chuckle, patting Five's shoulder and turning to watch the TV. Luckily one of my favourite shows was on so why not have a running marathon. "Whatever you got down on my laptop, make sure to write them out on something else before it dies."
"Don't worry, I'll remember these." I pay no attention to the busy bee next to me as I take a bite of my sandwich.
Holy shit this is good!
Why didn't I have this earlier in my life!?
"Five, thank you."
"For what?"
"For introducing me to this. I can finally die in peace." Five finally looks at me, breaking out of his concentration.
"You toasted it?"
"Risky move I know but yes. Try it!" I lift one end of the sandwich closer to his face and he hesitantly takes a bite.
Five groans softly, mumbling under his breath. "I'm toasting forever now. Holy shit."
"See, I told you!" he nods and looks at me for a long while. "What? Is something wrong?" He blinks and softly leans in, his face inching closer and I slowly move back. I had nowhere else to go and my cheeks were flaring up as Five stared at me. "Five-" he lifts his hand, resting it under my chin and tilting my head up as he ran his thumb over the edge of my bottom lip.
"You had some peanut butter there." He pulls back softly, a smirk on his face as he licked his thumb clean before turning back to his work on the laptop.
This son of a bitch.
I think I've stopped breathing.
