After my beak up with Sarah it seemed like everyone murmured about me everywhere I went.
Why'd they break-up?
They were so cute together.
They should get back together.
I had heard them all.
They thought I couldn't hear them, but sometimes whispers aren't all that quiet. Whispers can be loud, and whispers can hurt.
I wasn't sure why it was that people felt the need to comment on my love life in my presence. Its not like it was their business anyway.
All of it soon got to the point where I wanted to scream, I wanted to shout at all of them. Sometimes it doesn't work out. Sometimes people fall out of love and its no one's fault. Sometimes people remain together to please the world, but that wasn't my case. Sarah and I were no longer happy being with each other and we both agreed the best thing was to let go.
The blame was on me.
I made the mistake of thinking I could go out with a friend and people immediately thought I left Sarah to be with someone else.
As I arrived at the locker room at our training ground in Munich, I saw the majority of my team mates were staring at something Thomas was looking at on his iPad. "Basti sure moves on fast." One of them said, I believe it might have been Manuel. But their voices all mixed up into a sound that was a unified buzzing of a million voices. When they heard me come in, they all went silent. Thomas clicked on a button on his device and the screen went black. It was something they didn't want me to see.
Their eyes were all on me in the next moment.
I was so lost in my own thoughts that I didn't greet any of them and went to my locker. I opened it to drop my gym bag inside when Thomas approached me from behind. Tapping me on the shoulder, he said teasingly, "Basti..." He paused until I turned to look at him. On his face was a knowing grin that was trademark of Thomas and he wiggled his eyebrows at me. "Why didn't you tell us you're seeing someone? Are you embarrassed by me?" He feigned being offended.
"Ana is just a friend." I swore.
"Oh," Thomas continued teasingly, "Ana's her name?"
"Don't play dumb, Thomas." I scoffed, becoming slightly annoyed. "You know her."
My green eyed team mate shook his head. "Not the tennis player." He said, "I was talking about the beautiful blonde girl you've been spotted with."
"What?" I asked. Now I didn't know what he was saying.
Rolling his eyes, he brought his ipad out and clicked on the screen a few times until he found what he was looking for. He turned it around to show me a picture of me with a young blonde girl with ice blue eyes. And we looked in love.
But I never met her before.
I had never even seen her in my life.
I know I would remember a girl like her.
"Does this jog your memory?" Thomas questioned. He looked down at the screen and read off it, "Angeline Vivanco and Bastian Schweinsteiger are madly in love."
"I don't know that girl." I assured him.
"That's you in the picture." He pointed out.
"Yes, but-" I tried to explain, but he cut me off.
"Don't lie to me." He refused to listen to me.
"Fine!" I yelled, if only to get him to shut up. "I'm dating Evangeline."
"I thought her name was Angeline." Thomas' face contorted in cofusion.
"Whatever." I waved him off dismissively.
But now I had one objective. And that was to find the person spreading these rumors. I needed to know why they were doing it.
