He waited for Autumn to pick up the phone, but instead, he heard a child's voice on the other end. "Hello." The little girl said into the phone.
Harry felt his heart race at the sound of his little girl. "Listen," He gulped back the tears that threatened to escape, "Can you tell me if your mum will take my call today?"
"Oh," The little girl hummed. "You're that guy who's been trying to talk to mummy. I think she's in the bath and can't come to the phone right now."
"Will you please tell her its something very important, and that I need to talk to her?" Harry insisted.
"Did you do something to mummy?" Summer asked curiously. "I always see her tear up when grandma answers the phone and says someone wants to talk to her. She says 'tell him I'm not here' and makes hand signs and shakes her head."
Harry sighed. "I did do something to her a long time ago, something I'm very sorry for."
"Is that why you sound sad?" The little girl asked. "Mummy is also very sad and she doesn't say why. She never smiles." She added.
Before his tears could escape his eyes, he decided to change the subject. Clearing his throat he said, "While she gets out of the shower, how about you tell me how you're doing in school? I'm sure you've already started primary."
"Oh yes!" Summer replied, her voice full of excitement. "But since mummy works, she can't take me to school like all the other kids. The neighbor's wife takes me there with her children cause I don't have my daddy with me."
"Really?" Harry felt himself choke up. "What happened to him?"
"Mummy says he went to heaven, but that he really loved me." Summer replied. "She tells me stories of him and how he was so handsome. She said he looked like a prince. When I grow up, I wanna marry a prince like daddy."
"Who are you talking to, sweetie?" He heard Autumn's voice in the background.
Summer replied, matter-of-factly. "The sad man who calls here all the time."
There was a tussling heard as she took the phone from her daughter. "I told you not to talk to strangers." Autumn scolded.
"He doesn't sound mean, mummy." Summer said innocently.
"You still shouldn't talk to strangers, sweetie." Autumn insisted. "Its not safe."
And the line went dead.
