Valentines
Amy was woken up once again by her alarm from her phone blaring in her ear, abruptly snapping her out of her dreams as she blearily shut it off, rubbing her eyes with one hand as she stretched, sliding out of bed. She rubbed her arms, feeling a slight draft in the room. She looked around and found the door that led to the fire escape ajar.
She started to close it when she heard a noise on the roof. Curious, she carefully climbed up the metal stairs to find Phoenix sitting on the edge of the roof, his feet dangling over the side of the building.
She cleared her throat, making Phoenix jump in surprise.
"What are you doing up here?" She asked, sitting down beside him. The sun was starting to rise, the sky a collage of vibrant reds, pinks, blues, and purples.
"I come up here sometimes to clear my head." He shrugged, tearing his gaze away from the horizon to look at Amy.
"Happy Valentines Day by the way." He added with a small smile.
She had completely forgotten about it.
"Guessing you forgot?" He seemed to read her mind.
"Yeah, I guess." Amy murmured.
"Here." Phoenix leaned forward. She leaned forward as well, thinking he was going to kiss her. Instead, he awkwardly brushed a strand of hair out of her eyes.
"There." Phoenix cupped her chin with his hand and gently pressed his soft warm lips to hers, surprising her.
"Will you be my valentine?" Phoenix broke the kiss off after a couple of seconds that felt like hours, leaning his forehead against hers.
"I...I don't want to be your Valentine." She shook her head, taking his hands in hers.
"I want to be your girlfriend." She felt the words she wanted to say for days pour out of her mouth before her lips crashed against Phoenix's again. The rising sun cast a golden glow on the pair as they held each other in their arms on the rooftop, both enjoying each other's company.
"Mark." Phoenix said as the two pulled away.
"What?" Amy frowned in confusion.
"That's my real name. Phoenix was the nickname I used at the Immigrants. Ethan and Tyler are the only ones who knew, and now you know too." Mark explained.
The moment shattered as Mark's phone started ringing. He mouthed an apology as he answered it, the smile on his face replaced quickly with an expression of sheer panic.
"Yes...okay...is-okay, I'm on my way." He ended the call and quickly started to descend the stairs, nearly falling over in the process.
"What's wrong?" Amy caught his non injured arm and followed him inside.
"It's Tyler...they're about to take him off of life support." He swallowed hard, calling Jack to come pick them up.
He arrived in less than five minutes, his face set in a determined expression as Mark and Amy wordlessly climbed in. Jack drove way above the speed limit, but neither of them bothered to point it out.
As soon as Jack parked, they burst out of the car and ran into the hospital. Ethan was already in Tyler's room, acting as a wall between the doctor and Tyler to protect him.
"Don't you dare touch him." Mark warned, panting slightly from the run.
"There's nothing else we can do for him unless he gets the medication he needs, surgery on the kidney and a blood transfusion." The doctor answered calmly, unconcerned about the threat.
"How much?" Jack interjects.
"Twenty five thousand dollars." The doctor stated.
Amy didn't have near enough, neither did Ethan or Mark.
"Signe's gonna kill me for this." Jack sighed, fishing through his pocket until he found his credit card, handing it to him.
"What blood type is he?" Amy asked.
"AB." The doctor replied.
"That's my blood type." Ethan remarked.
"Then you stay here. Everyone else, I need you to leave." The doctor instructed. Wordlessly, everyone filed out of the room to wait in the lobby.
While everyone sat down, Mark remained standing, nervously pacing back and forth while running a hand through his faded red hair.
"Mark-"
"Both of my friends are in that room and I don't know if they'll both be okay!" Mark snapped, cutting Amy off.
"I came as soon as I heard you were here Sean." Signe burst through the entrance, examining him for any signs of injury.
"I'm fine, Mark's friend Tyler is getting surgery and his other friend Ethan is giving his blood to him." Jack hugged her.
Together the four waited anxiously for news, Amy finally forcing Mark to sit down to stop his pacing, which just made everyone more anxious.
After what felt like an eternity, the doctor walked back out with a grim expression.
"Tyler made it through the surgery and Ethan lost a lot of blood, but is fine." He clasped his hands together with a smile.
Eager to see them, they quickly walked back into Tyler's room.
Tyler was awake and was propped up in bed while Ethan was reclined back in a chair, his face extremely pale but otherwise he looked okay.
"Tyler!" Mark threw his arms around his friend, making sure to be carful to not hurt him.
"Hey Mark." Tyler rasped, flashing him a grin.
"Who's she?" Tyler looked around Mark at Amy.
"I'm Amy." She shyly introduced herself with a wave.
"My girlfriend." Mark added, wrapping an arm around her waist as if to prove his point.
"What?" Tyler and Ethan exclaimed in unison, making Amy and Mark laugh.
"You two are free to go. Tyler, don't do too much heavy lifting or moving around, I don't want to have to restitch you." He wheeled a wheelchair over to him and handed him a bottle of pills.
"And for you I would suggest taking it easy for the rest of the day." The doctor advised Ethan, whom only seemed to be half listening.
Once he left, Mark helped Tyler into the wheelchair before walking back to the lobby with the others.
The ride back to drop Amy, Tyler, Mark, and Ethan off at home was cheerier, Mark catching Tyler up on what he missed while Ethan slept with his head against the car window, Amy taking her phone out and taking a quick picture to humiliate him with later.
"Thanks for everything!" Mark gave Jack a high five with his good hand, waving goodbye to Signe as he took the wheelchair out of the trunk, unfolded it, and helped Tyler into again before Jack drove off.
"It's great to be home." Tyler sighed with a smile as he pushed himself forward, pausing so Ethan could open the door.
"The elevator's broken." Amy cursed.
"I guess we're doing this the fun way then." Ethan grunted, picking Tyler up bridal style since Mark only had one arm.
Amy took the wheelchair so she didn't feel useless as they began the long climb up, Ethan panting the entire time but refusing to give up.
Ethan nearly dropped Tyler on the black carpeted floor once they got inside Mark's apartment. The walls were painted red in one half, a quarter of it dark green and the last part of the walls bright blue, two beds pressed into the corner of either side of the room and a long black couch in the center with a flatscreen tv. A desk with a compute on top was by Mark's bed.
"Lay him on my bed for now." Mark instructed. Ethan complied instantly, his legs shaky as he sat down on his own bed.
"I know it's not much, but I've lived here for most of my life actually." Mark remarked.
"I like the different paint." Amy snorted in amusement, wondering why they couldn't decide on one color.
"I have to get back to my apartment, I need to start looking for a job." Amy added, wishing she didn't have to leave.
"I think I have an idea of what I'm gonna do." He glanced over at his computer.
"Good luck then." Amy smiled, giving him a hug.
"Will I see you tomorrow?" Mark asked, making her pause at the door.
"Definitely." She promised him, waving goodbye to Ethan and Tyler before going back down to her apartment.
She flopped down on her couch and stared at the crack in her wall, her smile still shining on her face. Even though the apartment was barren, she finally felt at home.
