25.
After a four-hour journey, The U.S. Air Force's F-14 jet fighter reached the Montego Ice shelf. After finishing circling the island for a while, it listened to the coordinates on the radio and started to land. The DC-3 plane that came in the morning was still on the runway, they didn't permit it to return to the mainland. Another make-shift runway was newly constructed a hundred yards to its left; The F-14 landed there. After Taxiing to settle down at the end of the runway, the pilot put off the engine, then opened the fiberglass canopy. Instantly the cold arctic air swept the cockpit through the opening.
"Are you all right, sir?" asked the pilot, looking back at the passenger's seats.
Douglas Bullock, AKA Bulldog, scoffed without answering.
He was not an aviator, sitting in a fighter jet running at Mach-3 speed;
He was at his limit already- suffering from motion sickness.
He had to restrain his nausea with great effort. He waited a minute to calm himself down and then came down from the cockpit. His legs were wobbling, the body has not fully regained balance yet. He was going to fall if someone didn't grab him right in time.
He freed himself hurriedly and said in a rude voice, "alright. I don't need your help!"
His teeth started chattering already.
He had to scrunch up his face to stop shaking while talking.
The man backed away in fear but handed him a heavy woolen jacket and a pair of pants nonetheless.
"Put them on, sir."
Bulldog grabbed the clothes and looked ahead. Two tractors came and
stopped next to the landed fighter jet. six people disembarked from them. A senior officer came forward.
He said, "Good afternoon,
Mr. Bullock. Welcome to Montego."
"Who are you?" asked bulldog while putting the warm clothes on.
"Commander Eugene Decker-Commanding officer of Coast Guard Ship Newburgh."
"Where is your ship?"
"Anchoring right next to the shelf."
"What are you waiting for? Are those bastards from Brighton still adamant about not handing over that old fool?"
Decker hesitated for a second, "that's not the case. You were en route, so nothing was reported on the radio. Umm...I mean...a miss-hap happened here."
"Miss-hap! What happened?"
"That Scientist is dead."
Bulldog paused while closing the chain of his jacket, "what did you just say?"
"You heard right, sir. Dr. Stanley Donnen is dead."
"What! How??"
"He was shot. We found the body outside the facility...on ice. One side of his head was blown off. I guess, sniper shot."
Bulldog remembered Jin's sniping skills in a flash, "does Kim Seokjin has any connection to his murder?"
"He was present at the ice shelf during the incident, also with Dr. Donnen at that time. So far this much has been confirmed. But what happened after- nobody has any idea at all."
"What do you mean by no one has any idea?" Bulldog didn't try to surpass his growl.
Decker raised his hand and pointed to the ice tractor, "let's go. I'll explain everything on the way. I think you will want to see the facility. That is a battlefield right there.
People of the facility aren't in a good condition either. Everyone is still suffering from the side effects of the gas. My medical team is treating them."
"I don't understand anything you are spewing. What gas, what battlefield?
Who fought—you and your men?"
"No, Mr. Bullock, not us. Sadly, the showdown ended even before we arrived here." Commander Decker smiled a bit, "let's not waste any more time standing here. I'll clear everything up on the way. If anything seems unclear, the facility's security chief can explain it to you."
Jin slowly opened his eyes. The inside of his head felt empty for a moment. As if there is a hollowness there- like
there is nothing inside. Never was. Then he remembered everything—Uno-code, viruses, Dr. Donnen, the research facility, the assassin attack, and finally the cliff and the jump.
He moved a little and looked around - everything was white. It was just like a hospital; The walls were like bulkheads—the Red Cross marks were seen in two places.
It was not difficult to understand that it was a sick bay of a ship.
Jin looked at himself - he was lying down on a milky white bed
his body was covered with just a thick blanket, and there was nothing underneath.
A medic standing by the bed saw him moving and he called someone instantly, "sir! He is conscious!"
A uniformed officer with a stethoscope around his neck came forward.
The red stripe on the shoulder epaulet meant doctor.
He was In his forties, with a cheerful face. He approached and said, "thank God! You have woken up!'' The voice was sincere, "I was afraid that you might have just gone into a coma!"
"Who are you?" asked Jin in a weak voice.
"Lieutenant Commander Brian Dermott, I'm from here... I mean I am the Medical Officer of CGS Newburgh. Of course, you can take me as your lifesaver for now."
CGS stands for Coast Guard Ship. Jin realized that it was the ship that was coming to take Dr. Donnen.
It must be them who rescued them from the water.
"Sorry, doctor," Jin said softly, "that title has been taken by many more in the past already. You have to stand in the queue to get your serial number."
Dr. Dermott laughed, "you are quite a funny fellow, Mr. Kim. Of course
seeing the old scars on your body, I can proudly say that If there were no doctors, you would have left the touch of the world long ago."
Sitting up, Jin asked, "how do you know my name?"
"You are still asking? We got the arrest warrant for both you and Ms. Akaishi with your photographs already!"
Jin became a little nervous after hearing the name of his partner. "Where's Arya?"
"There," said Dermot, pointing to a nearby bed.
There she was! Covered in a sheet up to her neck, eyes closed. From under the sheets, a part of her left shoulder that protruded was completely wrapped in a bandage.
Noticing the concern on Jin's face, the doctor said, “don't worry, Ms. Akaishi is completely safe."
"She was shot..."
"On her Shoulder," said Dermot, "but the injury was not serious - it just penetrated her flesh. The bullet exited without rupturing any critical arteries. The main problem is- you were both exposed to sub-zero water. Your hearts were about to stop, I had to bring them to a normal rhythm with the shock of a defibrillator."
"So she isn't in any danger now?"
"I don't think so," said Dermot, "You are a fit young man. She is too. Both of you are expected to be fully fit within hours. Her shoulder might be painful for a few days after the effect of painkillers is over, but that's just it. Nothing more than that."
"Thanks, Doctor," Jin genuinely said as relief spread over his face.
"There is Nothing to thank me, young man," smiled Dermot, "I just did my duty. Nothing else."
"How many people do that, doctor? Especially when the patients are such people whom you have received an order to arrest?"
"To me, The identity of the patient is just a patient, Mr. Kim. Nothing else. There are captains and others to decide whether you are a criminal or a saints. Not me."
"Yeah, I can see that," Jin commented seeing the armed sentry at the sickbay's door.
"Rest," said Dermot.
Arya's eyes opened almost immediately, her eyelids fluttered in a try to understand her whereabouts.
"Welcome back!" said Dermot.
"Uhh!" she grunted with pain in her shoulder as she pushed herself up on her elbows and said, "as I am still feeling the pain, I guess I am not in heaven yet?"
"Oh, she can crack a joke too in this situation!" Dermot's voice was amused.
"Actually We are in a tiny version of hell right now," Jin said in a light voice.
"Why? Where are we?"
"On that Coast Guard ship. They pulled us out of the water. And
Yes, we're prisoners... Bulldog has sent our arrest warrants to them."
"Mother luck is betraying us in all sorts of forms today, Jin. Looks like we are in the middle of her mood swing time right now." Arya groaned in pain as she tried to move her shoulder, "we lost Dr. Donnen, got captured by the Coast Guard... Perhaps it is not possible to complete the mission anymore."
"Don't be in despair," said Jin, "tell me what is your condition now.
Can you work? I need your help to escape."
"There is no problem as long as you don't ask me to lift something heavy," Arya said, "But We are in the middle of the ocean, how do you expect to escape from here?"
"Not there yet. Still thinking."
"Let's say we escaped, then what? No one can help us with that virus now as we lost Dr. Donnen. There is no one."
"There is, Arya. The last Uno... Dr. Elisa Van Buren. We will go to her."
"We don't know where she is...We even don't know whether she is alive or not. Even if she is- what is the
guarantee that she will help us?"
Jin didn't get a chance to reply, and a bunch of people entered the Sick Bay through the door led by Lieutenant Commander Cecil Flynn, executive officer.
"Good afternoon, Doctor," greeted Flynn, glancing at Dermot,
"I heard that they have regained consciousness, so I came to check."
"Just to check?" Dermot frowned.
"I think you have any other intentions, X.O."
"No particular intention, doctor. I was ordered to send them to the ice shelf.
A CIA officer has arrived there. He wants to talk to them."
Jin and Arya looked at each other - surely, it was Bulldog.
The medical officer said, "tell him that the patients aren't completely ok. If he wants to talk, ask him to come here himself."
Flynn shrugged, "sorry, doctor. None of us have the power to order around that gentleman."
"It doesn't matter," said Dermot angrily, "these patients are my responsibility. I have the right to decide what's best for them. So just
tell that man that I did not agree to release the patients."
"Please don't make any trouble," said Flynn, annoyed.
"There is nothing good in showing them so much mercy. The captain radioed me a while ago, nine bodies were found in the facility...Brutally murdered. I think they are responsible for them."
"What!"
"I am not lying. I was informed about their identities. Both are secret agents from NIS. Especially that Kim Seokjin- he is a born killer. He is more than capable of killing those people in the facility."
Dermot walked over to Jin's bed, "Is that true, Mr. Kim?"
"About what?" asked Jin.
"That you have killed nine people on the ice shelf?"
"No," replied Jin in a calm voice. "We didn't kill anyone."
'Then who did it?'
"You asked a good question, we want to know the answer too."
"Huh?"
"We don't know who killed those people."
"Don't answer vaguely, Mr. Kim," said Flynn in a threatening tone.
"Everyone in the facility was found unconscious, except for the two of you. Both of you were conscious at that time, otherwise, you couldn't have gotten out of there and jumped into the water. If you didn't kill them, then who did it?"
"If everyone was unconscious, then we just could have wandered around enjoying our time, right?" said Arya in a crooked tone, "why do you think we jumped into the water? To cool us off as I am too hot?"
"Tell me what happened?" asked Dermot.
"The killers were trying to kill us too, to escape from them we jumped from the ice shelf to the sea with a snowmobile."
"Didn't you just say that you didn't see who did the murder?"
"You have misunderstood the meaning of his words," said Arya, "we have seen them, we fought against them, but we don't know anything about their identity."
''They're confusing us with this and that, Doctor,'' said Flynn.
"Don't believe in anything they said. They are spies, masters of fooling people. It is the CIA's headache, let them deal with it."
"I am not believing or disbelieving them," Dermot said in a calm voice, "but it is true—they are not perfectly healthy. At this moment I will not allow you to move them anywhere."
"The matter is no longer at my level. will you allow it or not- it doesn't matter. I am sending them to the research facility. End of discussion."
"How ridiculous! at least you should tell the captain about it. I do not believe that he will blow my words instantly. They are sick...weak.
Being interrogated in this condition can lead them to death."
"Who cares if they die? They are the enemy of America, if they die, the country will be benefited."
"What the hell are you talking about!" Dermot was angry, "you think I will just let two people die without any judgment? Not at all. If you don't want to talk to the captain, then let me. But you will do nothing until I speak to him."
"Stand back, Doctor," Flynn ordered. "That's an order!"
"You...who are you to order me?" said Dermot angrily, "the medical officer works directly under the captain, not under you. Apart from that, you are much junior to me in terms of ranking. How dare are you ordering me?"
"In the absence of the captain, As the X.O. of the ship, I am now
In command, sir," said Flynn. He gestured for the armed sentry to enter the room. Pointing to them, he said, "Please, don't create a scene.
It will be your loss."
"Why are you so worked up suddenly, tell me?" The doctor asked in a surprised voice.
Flynn did not answer, he was looking into the eyes of the medical officer with a glare. Jin realized that man is not only stubborn but also probably
ambitious too. That's why just by hearing the name of the CIA, he jumped up to show his competency to them. He is probably just looking for a chance to show off. There must be a secret hope in his heart to prove himself worthy in the eyes of a high-ranking CIA official. If possible, it will be convenient for lobbying for his future promotions. It's no secret that to go to the top ranking of any U.S. military or any other force, clearance from the intelligence community... especially from the CIA is needed.
It wasn't late to understand that Jin's assumption was not wrong. Glancing at one of the sentries, Flynn said, “make arrangements for some clothes for the prisoners. And tell our helicopter to come back from the ice shelf. I will take the prisoners to the research facility myself."
Arya wanted to laugh—the man was indeed wanting to be a hero in front of Douglas Bullock. He intended to impress a high-ranking CIA officer, But little does this poor lieutenant commander know- Bulldog never gives any good report about anybody.
Ever.
