Stress and Limitations

How far can you push someone? Where is any given individual's limit? These are questions best left untested. It's sad really, you see it everyday, people, good people, being pushed far beyond their limits. Students, employees, everyone. Today, we will discuss the consequences of pushing some past their limitations, and about the stress it causes.

First, we'll start with an example our culture tries to hide, students. The problem is, that the way the United States (if you're outside the U.S. then this may hold less merit) puts an emphasis on being the absolute best. Not the best one can be, but the best in general. This is where the problems begin.

First, an example, a student is in average classes with Bs. The parents decide to move this student to honors classes. With some adjustments, the student gets a good grip on the material and makes high Cs. However, without As, there's no way to get into a good collage. The parents push the student, the student makes As, but is now stressed, sleep deprived, depressed, and a whole slew of other problems. Before, even in honors, the student was happy, well rested, relaxed. What happened? It's quite simple. The kid had reached their limit apon joining honors classes. However, his parents continued to push, leading the student to become stressed and depressed.

Now, this student is not based on anyone, but many people could relate to such circumstances. This is the issue we are discussing today, people being pushed far beyond their limits.

Pushing someone beyond their limits is something we have all done, most likely by accident, may haps you pushed another, maybe yourself, but you've done this to someone.

Here's where the issue lies. People either: A: Don't know. (Which is just a misunderstanding) B: Don't care. (In other words, they're an asshole.)

Allow me to quote a conversation between an anonymous friend, and their parents.

"I'm so stressed," the kid says.

"You have nothing to be stressed about," the parents reply.

God Dammit! The reason the anonymous kid is stressed is you (referring to the parents, thought I'd clarify)! This anonymous friend is under similar circumstances to the example given earlier. The parents have pushed this poor kid far pass their natural limit, literally demanding all As in FUCKING HONORS CLASSES! NO ONE'S PERFECT! YOUR KID DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THE BEST! Cs IN HONORS IS GOOD ENOUGH! ACCEPT THAT THEY HAVE LIMITATIONS!

However, that is not to say that this issue only effects teenagers. Adults can experience similar problems at work. More hours, overtime, more work days, etc. This issue effects everyone. We need to accept the limitations of others and ourselves. We need to understand that when we push someone to be their best, we have to know to stop. If we can all do that, and we are vocal when we do feel stressed, I'm sure that this issue can be solved,  and we'll all be happier and less stressed. It'll just take some understanding. Anyways, I'm off to write something else. Have a great day!
