(DITL/1996) The Same Moon
I did say in the preface that I would only write oneshots for songs with music videos, but this song doesn't have an official music video, although it's a single.
It's most probably because "Dance Into The Light" is a severely underrated album at the time of its release, its critical reception not that amazing in commercial terms, and with Phil still being hammered by the British tabloids and certain other news in terms of the Faxgate incident, in 1993, where he was THOUGHT to have divorced his second wife, Jill Tavelman, by fax.
No. He did not do that, by the way. (To the MJfam readers reading this, yes, not just Michael suffers from tabloids)
Anyway, let's push the negativity aside - and enjoy this oneshot I thought of spontaneously! (As usual) :)
Perspective: Phil Collins
1993 | Surrey, England
"Hey... Jill..." I was slowly waking up, turning my body real slow due to the fatigue, but my hands, expecting to feel Jill, felt nothing.
"Jill?"
I shoot up from my rest position in bed, the sun's rays lighting up the room, and I turn to see that...
I'm the only one in the room.
"Jill?" Ah, she probably just went to the bathroom to freshen up, I suppose. The bed still feels warm where she sleeps.
But I think back to when I met up once again with Lavinia Lang, my first love, in Los Angeles...
When I was with Genesis on the We Can't Dance tour, and it was because Jill had mentioned that she was... there.
I couldn't help but try and rekindle a love that I had missed - is Jill angry at me for that? Is that why she left?
I head to the bathroom, hoping Jill would be there to prove me wrong, but as my hands twist the door handle and swing the door inward...
No one's there.
Fuck! She's really angry - is she going to bring Lily with her too?
Desperate, I get dressed and head to Lily's bedroom. The door creaks open, and I see that the room is emptied of her existence, except the furniture.
They're gone... Jill really took me seriously about Lavinia.
No, Jill still loves me, because I do. I refuse to believe that it's over. There must be a reason, I'm not letting myself lose the people I love again, a second time, after what happened with Andy, no.
Not when we're so deep into our relationship now, now when everything started to feel better.
I spend a day in the house, my mind completely blank. I reach for the phone to call Jill many times over, but none of the calls get through.
Knowing Jill won't pick up, I head to the studio, melodies forming as emotions find their way into song.
Unbeknownst to me, time flew past as I made demos, to keep a record of the melodies that came by.
The moon was high up in the sky now - and I remember the time I was with Jill under the stars in the backyard, Lily fast asleep in her room...
♡♡♡
"Jill, don't you think the moon is really bright tonight?" Jill's head was resting on my shoulder as we look up to the night sky, the moon's luminous glow illuminating the ground below.
"It sure is, Phil," Jill replies, as she inhales deeply, appreciating the scenery as I did.
"You know, Jill, there will be days that seem much longer, and some nights that just seem so cold when I'm not there by your side... either because of Genesis, or my solo tours, or anything, for that matter. But choose a time and I'll catch this exact moon, we'll see each other there. Let the moon be our witness - for we both see the same stars in the same sky." I told her, as I had to make it clear.
I do love my work. I do like working with Genesis, and like with Andy, I could get so engrossed, caught up in it, I could forget everything else in the moment, and that's what I'm trying not to repeat with Jill, very badly.
I continued, "And from wherever you are, wherever I am, we'll find somewhere - if you look at the moon, you'll see me too when I do the same. It sounds really corny at this point, but our love will shine through it all."
"Aw, Phil." Jill kneads me with her elbow, a sign that she thinks that what I said indeed was corny. Oh well...
"Well, we are looking at the same moon, aren't we?"
♡♡♡
"Jill... I'm looking at the moon now, do you see me? Remember what I said? We'll see each other, as long as we both see the same moon..."
"Tell me, Jill. Where are you?" I say out loud, but in the end, it was meant for me to hear, for no one else would be there.
The phone rings at this very moment, and I pick it up, hoping it's Jill.
"Hey Phil," That gentle voice - Jill!
"You had me worried sick back there, Jill! What happened - why did you leave with Lily?" I was filled with questions - that I so desperately wanted answers.
"I... I got frustrated thinking about you with Lavinia, so I decided to bring Lily away with me for a while. I don't blame you, but it just hurts to see an old flame relight, while you already have one burning."
"I... it's my fault - I mean, you gave me her number, I had a choice..."
"I... you know what, Phil? You need time to reorganise yourself, and so do I. So how about we give some time to each other... and we'll see about that," Jill hangs up, not even a goodbye, and I fall back lazily onto the bed, staring at the ceiling.
What will life bring in time to come?

1996
I'm staying with Orianne, my new fiancé, in Switzerland - Jill and I had properly separated ourselves from each other earlier in the year, and it didn't end that well, with the tabloids still going strong regarding how I divorced her by fax back in 1993. I obviously didn't do that, some idiot passed a copy of my fax to the bloody media, just to ruin my public image - which it did.
Not great.
I was in the studio, recording another set of songs for a new album - Dance Into The Light. The record label was kinda nagging at me to make one.
And the song makes its way into my head...
When the daylight comes and I look across the room,
I see you're gone.
As the morning breaks and I reach to hold your hand,
I can see, see I'm the only one...
Well, your clothes are gone and your bags are packed
But the bed's still warm where you lay
Now I need your love to come shining through...
To carry me, come carry me away.
If you choose a time, then I'll catch the moon
I'll see you there
From wherever I am, wherever you are,
We'll find somewhere.
I see the same stars in the same sky,
Shining down on you,
I'll be looking up from wherever I am,
And it's you I'll see if you're... looking too.
There'll be days that'll seem much longer,
Some nights will seem so cold,
But I see her on the horizon...
And it's gotta come soon - please don't be too long,
Don't be too long...
If you choose a time, we can catch the moon
oh, I'll see you there
Whenever it is, from wherever you are
Oh we'll find, yes we'll find somewhere.
Tell me, are you looking at the same moon?
Are you looking at the same moon?
Oh yeah
Are you looking at the same moon?
Please tell me...
"Let's call it The Same Moon..." the memory with Jill resurfaces as the lyrics are penned down.
"Oh, Jill... I'm so, so sorry. It shouldn't end this way..."
