Chapter 43: New Resident and Band Practice

We all stepped out of the taxi outside of UA, Eri clinging to my top with wide eyes as she stared up at the towering building. Eri wiggled in my arms, clear nervousness and fear beginning to dawn on her face. She tore her eyes away from the school to look at Dad, Mirio and me nervously.

"Why is it so big? Is this where I'm going to live?" Eri whispered fearfully.

"That's the school. Remember how I told you Izuku and I go to a hero school called UA, this is that school." Mirio said gently. Eri silently nodded, prompting Mirio to continue, "You're gonna be living around five minutes away from this school. I'm not sure why it's so big, maybe Nezu is trying to compensate for something." Mirio snickered slightly at the innuendo he made, paying no heed to the glare Dad gave him.

"How about we head over to where you'll be staying, huh?" I asked kindly, " We can see the flower garden and I can show you your new room. Does that sound exciting?", Eri nodded slightly, her eyes seem to gain a slight glow at the mention of flowers. We had seen some on the way out of the hospital and Eri had been immediately entranced, so I had, of course, promised to show her some more as soon as possible. Seeing Eri seem to lighten ever so slightly made me feel better.

I carried Eri on my back past UA and down the tree-lined path towards the dormitories. Her head swivelled every few seconds, her wide eyes taking in everything we passed. All three of us watched her with smiling faces and warm hearts. Just seeing Eri express genuine curiosity without an underlying sense of fear or apprehension, was enough to make the rest of my day light up with joy. I think I might have accidentally passed on some of my habits to Eri in the short time we had known each other because the snowy-haired girl started mumbling at breakneck speeds about everything she saw. Expressing her awe and concealed excitement. I smiled gently at this. Having Eri as a sister was going to be an experience which I would treasure deeply.

We arrived outside of Height's Alliance fairly quickly. Eri looked up at the tall building (though nowhere near as tall as UA) with sparkling vermillion eyes and clenched fists. I wasn't sure if she was upset, but I decided to just go on with what I planned to do. Just as I opened my mouth to talk, Mirio's phone chimed from his pocket, he gave all three of us an apologetic smile before he checked his phone, smile falling as he read.

"I'm sorry guys, but there's an emergency I need to attend to. Sorry, Eri. I'll be back later, ok? And then we can hang out, how would you like that?" Mirio smiled sincerely at Eri, his voice was full of reluctance to go, but whatever he had read was clearly of the utmost importance. Eri nodded silently, patting Mirio's blond hair silently. We had long since learned that it was her form of affection since she didn't hug people often. Mirio beamed at Eri one last time before he bid Dad and I farewell and bounced away at top speed.

"Let's go in, ok. Stay close to my side though, other people live here as well, ok? They're my classmates so they won't hurt you, but they might be a little scary at first. If you get sacred, you can just tug on my top and I'll whisk you away, yeah?" I spoke in a gentle voice. I knelt beside Eri so that I was at eye level and Eri could see me better.

"O-ok," Eri muttered quietly.

"Good girl," I smiled, gently placing a hand on the top of her head and watching carefully for her reaction. She didn't flinch away or react negatively, she pushed her head into my hand like a cat seeking attention. It was adorable. I pulled my hand away and got us, glancing at Dad as I did so. He was looking at the two of us with a small fond smile. It was barely noticeable, I only saw it because I had been living with him for nine years. With that, I took Eri's tiny hand in mine and walked us towards Height's Alliance.

After we had removed our shoes and exchanged them for slippers (in mine and Dad's case, Eri simply stayed in her socks), the three of us moved passed the genkan and into the common area where we were greeted with a vast majority of the class. The only people who weren't there were Tokoyami, Koda, Sato, Mina and Hagakure( I think, it was hard to tell with her). As soon as we walked through the door, 14 heads whipped around to look at us, or more specifically, Eri. Nobody made any sudden moves, fearful that they would accidentally scare the fragile girl who was currently cowering behind my leg.

"All of you, please move to a different area of the dorms for the time being." Dad drawled lazily, "Except for you, Shinso, stay here please.", everyone followed Dad's instructions without any objections. They could see that Eri was obviously frightened of them and they didn't want to scare her.

The room was cleared out within seconds, everyone either filtering up the stairs, into the kitchen or out into the garden. Soon enough it was only me, Eri, Dad and Hitoshi left. Dad sighed heavily before squatting down so that he could look at Eri properly.

"Eri, are you ok?" He asked in a voice which was as close to gentle as it was going to get. Shota had a naturally very gravelly voice, so even when he was speaking in softer tones he sounded gruff, though Eri seemed to be used to it after he had visited her a great number of times. She silently nodded her head in reply, though she was gazing at Hitoshi with suspicion.

"He's not gonna hurt you. This is Shinso Hitoshi, he's my... son as well as Izuku. Since I'm going to be taking care of you, you'll probably see him in and around where you'll be sleeping a lot." Dad explained, I watched out of the corner of my eye as Hitoshi turned slightly red and turned his head away as Dad called him his son, it made me happy to see.

"Hitoshi, come over here and introduce yourself," Dad called over. Hitoshi quickly walked over and knelt down beside Eri, giving her his nicest smile and not one of the creepy ones he always did around the rest of the class.

"Hello, Eri, I'm Shinso. How are you?" Hitoshi sounded awkward as he spoke, he clearly wasn't the best when it came to children. Eri clung to my hand a little tighter, though she didn't back away from Hitoshi, which I figured was a good sign.

"I-i'm good," Eri whispered so quietly that I had to strain my ears to hear her. Shinso nodded his head and smiled again before he also said that he was good and welcomed her to her new home. We said goodbye to Hitoshi after that and continued towards Dad's room. I remembered hearing the sounds of construction the previous night, but I had no idea that they were building an extra room in Dad's quarters. Nezu sure did work fast.

When we stepped into my dad's personal area, I nearly gasped out loud. Somehow, Nezu had managed to not just add on an extra room for Eri but also remodelled the entire area. I glanced over at Dad with a raised eyebrow and a disbelieving nod to the remodelled space in front of us. I'm sure my wide eyes conveyed the message of 'How the fuck did he manage this?' well enough since Shota just shrugged and stepped around Eri and me.

"Eri, this is where you'll be living." Dad spoke gently, " Do you want me to show you around?". Eri silently nodded, clinging to my hand tighter as she did so. Dad stood up from his crouched position and started gesturing around as we walked through.

"This is the living room. There's the sofa, you can sit on that anytime, that armchair over there is my fiance's chair, his name is Yamada Hizashi and you'll meet him later. You can watch the TV whenever you want, the remote is on this table here." Dad explained as he led us through the living room which the door from the dorms led directly into. We walked from the living room into a small hallway which had four doors off-shooting from it.

Again, I was left to ponder how all of this had been built in just one night. Before, my dad's area had simply consisted of a small living from with a sofa and two armchairs, the walls a dull eggshell colour. In the corner of the room, behind a half-wall was a small kitchenette which only contained a refrigerator, one countertop, a sink and an oven. There were two doors beside each other in the living room, one leading to my parent's bedroom and the other to the sole bathroom. It looked nothing like that now.

We stopped before the first two doors in the small hallway. They were both simple white wooden doors, they were opposite each other. Dad turned to the door on the left first and opened it up to show a pristine, clearly new, bathroom. "This is the bathroom," Dad commented blandly. What more was there to really say, we didn't need him to detail what goes on in the bathroom, we were all familiar.

We turned to the door opposite, Eri looked up at Dad with wide eyes full of intrigue. Dad smiled ever so slightly down at Eri before pushing the door open to reveal a brand new kitchen. The kitchen was a lot larger than the old kitchenette which had been in the room. In the kitchen, there were multiple counters, a refrigerator, an oven and stovetop, and a table which could easily seat six people. "As you can see, this is the kitchen. There is a kitchen in the main area of the dorms, but that can get really busy." Dad explained to Eri. Eri nodded silently from beside me legs, she seemed thankful that she wouldn't have to dine with all of the 'scary' teenagers in the main area of the dorms.

We finally moved to the end of the hallway where the other two doors were. "This one is my bedroom, and this one is yours." Dad first pointed to the left-hand door then the right. Eri nodded slightly, her eyes were glued to her bedroom door which already stood out from the rest. The white wood was painted with flowers and had her name in cutesy purple bubble writing in the middle.

"C-can I go in?" Eri whispered timidly. I smiled down at her and pushed the door open.

"Of course you can go in, you don't need to ask. It's your room, after all." I answered with a light chuckle. Dad nodded to the two of us before he disappeared down the hallway, giving me the job of settling Eri into her new room. He would be back if I needed his help.

Eri and I shuffled into her bedroom and looked around. The room contained the standard things found in bedrooms. Against one wall there was a set of drawers made of white wood and on the opposite wall, there was a toy chest brimming with toys. Beside said toy chest, there was a dollhouse which suspiciously resembled Height's Alliance and I swore I could see a tuft of green in one of the windows. I filed this information away for later and looked around at the rest of the room. Eri's bed was on the opposite wall to the door, positioned directly under a window which looked out onto the flower garden. All the walls but one were painted lilac, the one wall which wasn't was the wall which the toy chest rested against. This wall was black. I was curious about this peculiar design choice, so I walked over to the wall, Eri's hand still in mine, and touched it. I smiled to myself when I realised that the wall had the same texture as a chalkboard. The entire wall was a chalkboard which Eri could draw on.

After showing Eri around her room and demonstrating that she could draw on the sole black wall in her room, which very clearly made her excited, I walked out of her bedroom, leaving her to doodle on the wall. I found Dad in the kitchen. He was sat at the table on his phone, most likely speaking to either Papa or Auntie Emi.

"Nothing too bright. Yes... Well no but... I don't think it's too hard to grasp that I'm not one for that sort of stuff. I'm not a downer. Fine, fine, whatever. I had to pick up Eri from the hospital, and you two are the ones who decided today was the best day to go out and shop for wedding stuff. Yeah, she's fine... ok, see you when you get home. Yeah, I love you too." The one-sided conversation between Dad and who I could only guess was Papa was amusing to listen to.

"Dad," I alerted him to my presence in the doorway, smiling at him as he turned around and saw me. "Eri is playing in her room. I need to go to band practice.", Shota nodded and stood up from his seat at the table. We both walked back to Eri's room where we found the small girl happily drawing on the wall.

"Eri," I called out. Eri's head shot up, she turned to me and looked at me, waiting for me to continue. "I've got to go somewhere for a bit, but I'll come back later, ok?"

"Where are you going?" Eri muttered sadly.

"I'm going to go and practice my singing and instrument. Rember how I told you that I play music with my friends. That's what I'm going to practise. We're going to be playing for a lot of people in our school soon. Do you want to come and see us when we play?" I asked gently. Eri nodded her head enthusiastically which caused the smile which was already on my face to widen further. I glanced at my dad out of the corner of my eyes, silently asking if she would be able to.

Sensing my gaze and silent question, Dad sighed "She can go. As long as she stays with Mirio when she's there. It might be good for her as long as she's around somebody she trusts.". I beamed at him and hugged him in farewell before quickly doing the same to Eri and rushing from my Dad's living quarters and to band practice.

I stumbled through Kyoka's door, panting with rushed apologies spewing from my lips. The only reaction I garnered were some raised eyebrows from Kyoka, a huff from Kacchan and a slight nod from Tokoyami.

"It's fine, we haven't started yet, anyway." Kyoka dismissed lightly. I silently thanked my lucky stars that practice hadn't started yet. Both Kyoka and Kacchan were very devoted when it came to the band. That's not to say that I wasn't devoted, because I was, it just so happened that my two childhood friends took the band a little more seriously than me. I had been late to band practice only a few times, and each time was as unforgettable as the next. I shuddered just thinking about them.

"Now that the nerd is here," Kacchan started, "we can talk about what songs we'll be playing. I hope you learn quick, Birdhead."

"I am a rather fast learner. I shouldn't find too much issue with learning the songs required." Tokoyami stated in his usual solemn voice, courteously ignoring Kacchan's unnecessary nickname. Surely it took more brainpower to come up with nicknames and remember them than to simply call people by their names.

"Great!" Kyoka enthused, " Now, I have a few ideas for songs we can play, but not many of those songs can easily be danced to given our genre. So... I've started writing a new song. It's... a bit rushed, but I'm practically finished." Kyoka paused for a second, taking in all of our reactions. Kacchan raised an eyebrow, his crimson eyes clearly showed pride in Kyoka for writing another song in such little time whilst also shining with curiosity. Tokoyami also looked rather impressed, after all, it hadn't been long since the culture festival had been announced. I can say without a doubt that I was incredibly proud of Kyoka. She really was amazing.

"It's called 'Hero Too' and we'll play it as the first song. It shouldn't be too hard to learn," Kyoka continued on, "As for the rest of our songs, I have a list here of suggestions we can play. I spoke to Momo and she said that we'll most likely have to play around six songs. Keep in mind that the last song also needs to be danceable, if you know what I mean."

Kacchan, Tokoyami and I crowded around the piece of paper which Kyoka handed over, eyes scanning the list of songs for the one's we thought were best suited. " I feel like we should definitely do 'Datte atashino hero' as the final song. " I piped up. My comment was greeted by nods from everyone else.

"What should the other songs be then?" Kyoka mused.

"I think we should play this song," Tokoyami muttered as he pointed his finger to 'Alone Together'. There were some mumbled thoughts from Kyoka and Kacchan before they both nodded in agreement.

"I'm happy to play that," Kacchan shrugged, "I think we should play 'All My Life'. It's a bit more energetic than the other three, but that'll probably rile the crowd up, which is what we want."

"I'm happy to play that song. Let's play 'Check Yes Juliet'," Kyoka piped up.

"I think we should also play 'Devil Town'," I suggested. We discussed our song choices a bit, deciding what order they should go in. After half an hour of discussion, we finally settled on an order for the songs and started practice with Tokoyami picking up the songs with very few flaws.

Thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day wherever you are.
