Chapter 18: Provisional License Exam
When they actually enter the arena I start referring to them as their hero names, just a heads up. A reminder that Izu's hero name is Deviant. I've decided that Shoto's hero name wild be Ice Burn and Histoshi's is Mindjack.
We entered the test centre and split up into our assigned changing rooms. Shuffling into our hero costumes as fast as we could so that we wouldn't miss anything important. I was just tucking my knives into their sheaths when Dad called from the door that we needed to get a move on unless we wanted to miss the explanation of the test. I quickly finish what I was doing before running out of the changing room.
"Wow, there are so many people here," I whispered in awe as I looked around at the dense crowd around me. Members of my class such as Shoto, Kacchan, Kyoka, Momo, Tsu and Ochako surrounded me. Their arms pressed into me and whenever they moved I was jolted as well. I was glad that only people from my class were surrounding me because if somebody I didn't know was pressed up against me, I might have started to panic. I turned to comment something to Shoto but was cut off by a scratchy, tired voice echoing over the speaker system.
"So... The provisional license exam. That's why you're here." The voice groaned I pushed up onto my tiptoes and just managed to peak over everybody's head to see a pale and exhausted looking man practically sprawled across his desk out of pure exhaustion. "My name is Mera and I'm from The Heroes Public Safety Commission." the man continued to groan before his head fell into his desk and he started grumbling about how busy he was.
After a few minutes of Mera grumbling and trying his hardest to lift his head off of the desk in front of him, Mera finally got to explain the format for the exam. He honestly reminded me of my dad after he had gone 3 days straight without sleeping for more than an hour. I sometimes wondered how that man functioned.
"All 1540 of you examinees will be competing in a huge freed for all activity." a few whispers ran through the crowd as Mera continued. "The modern world is full of heroes which we don't necessarily need. The speed at which incidents are solved is near-instantaneous. If you want to succeed as a hero, you need to be quick otherwise you'll get left behind. That is why we're testing you on your speed. Only the first 100 examinees who meet the requirements will be passing.". As soon as the words left Mera's lips there was an instant uproar from the crowd of aspiring heroes. I could feel my heart skip a beat at the news. Only 100 out of 1540. That was less than 10% of the candidates. The likelihood of the entire class passing suddenly seemed very, very slim.
"The aim of the game is simple. You will each be given six of these balls and have three of these sensors," Mera held up said balls and sensors, " Your job is to eliminate your opponents by using these balls to hit their targets. The targets can be placed anywhere on your body, provided they are easy to access. That means no armpits or soles of feet. Once all three of your targets have been hit, you are eliminated. To pass this test, you must eliminate two of your opponents." Mera drawled as several people stepped forward with large boxes in their hands. "We'll hand the targets and balls out once this place opens up," Mera commented before his head hit his desk and he started lightly snoring.
Everyone shared bemused looks at the words 'open up'. Whatever we had expected the words to mean, it wasn't for the walls and ceiling to literally fall away to reveal an arena with multiple environments. "What the fuck?"Kacchan and Kyoka whispered in awe as they stared out at the area which was soon to become a battlefield. My mouth fell open as I stared out at the cityscape which blended perfectly into an industrial park and rocky terrain. "As you can see there are multiple terrains within the arena. We've tried to give you as much variety as possible. Now put on your target and get out there." Mera tried to say with enthusiasm but he fell short. The poor man.
Everyone in the class had stuck their targets to themselves and we were all moving into the arena. "It's in our best interest to stick together. I think it's obvious to all of us that we're going to be targeted. The other schools think they know the full extent of our quirks and will most likely underestimate us because we're first years." I explained to my classmates as we all huddled together to speak in hushed voices. "Deviant is right. There isn't going to be much infighting which means that school are going to target others. We are the most logical target seeing as the sports festival has exposed us to our enemies. We should all stick together." Creati assessed quietly, ducking her head slightly as a random student passed us by. "It'll be hard to stick together if we're all fighting. Anything could happen, what should we do if we get split up?" Invisible Girl asked nervously. I shared a look with Creati, we both had the same idea. "Deviant and I will create communication devices. Everyone takes one and if you get lost you can use it to communicate with those near you. If we get split up, try and get into groups of at least 3 and continue the exam. Got it?"Creati asked. Everyone nodded in understanding. Our plan was set in place.
After Creati and I had created 20 walkie-talkies, we handed them out to our classmates. "Don't lose them," Ingenium ordered everyone, giving us all a piercing stare. "We'd better move, the actual exam is about to start," Uravity said, looking around like a meerkat to see if she could spot anyone from any opposing schools. "I'm not sticking with you losers. I'm going out on my own!" Ground Zero hissed, starting to run away from the group. "Bakubro, wait for us!" Red Riot and Chargebolt shouted, following after Ground Zero. Creati opened her mouth to call them back but I placed a hand on her shoulder and shook my head, "It's not worth it. We all knew that Ground Zero would brave this test on is own." I said, watching as my best friend sprinted into the distance with Chargebolt and Red Riot in tow. Creati sighed through her nose and nodded her head. "Ok, well at least we have 17 of us." She sighed. "Actually, 15. I think I'd be better off luring people into my traps away from you guys. Plus, Ice Burn ran away right after he received his walkie-talkie. If I need help, I'll call." Mindjack said before waving and running towards the cityscape. I looked around the group of my peers and realised that my boyfriend's familiar two-toned hair was indeed missing. I shook my head slightly. "Ok. 15 of us. Let's stick together and all make it through this, ok?" Ingenium shouted, rallying the group. Everyone pumped their fists into the air and started running towards the mountain area.
As we ran a robotic voice started counting down from five. The voice bounced around the arena and echoed in my mind. With every number said, I became tenser and tenser. My muscles were winding up for some big attack. I knew what was going to happen. I could practically smell the danger in the air. "2...1!" the robotic voice bellowed, "GO!".
The word had barely even left the speakers when an entire horde of students from Ketsubutsu jumped out from behind the rocks surrounding us, balls at the ready. There wasn't a second to waste. As soon as they appeared, we had small vermillion balls flying at us. Several of my classmates immediately defended.
Tsukuyomi called forward Drak Shadow who snatched the balls out of the air and threw them back with vigour. Pinky used her acid in a whip-like fashion to dissolve the balls before they even managed to get anywhere near her. Uravity floated herself out of the way, somersaulting through the air to evade the balls. Creati created huge riot shields which protected not only her but some of the others.
Seeing as I was at the front of the group and most likely to get hit, I already had a plan for if something like this were to happen. As soon was the Ketsubutsu students popped up, I transformed into a monumental, powerful fan. My blades spun ferociously and generate enough wind to blow the balls back at their senders.
The wind made the loose soil on the ground to swirl up and create a dust screen in front of my class. I transformed back and fell back to my peers. "I knew we were going to be targetted, but I didn't expect us to be attacked from the start." Ingenium frowned slightly. "We've got to keep our guard up." Froppy ribbitted, eyes searching around us. "Should we split up into smaller groups. It'll be harder to see us and it'll split their forces." Tailman muttered, eyes swivelling around to make sure we weren't being snuck upon. "I think we should stick together until it can't be helped," Creati muttered, starring resolutely at the students of Ketsubutsu as the dust screen cleared. I knew just looking at our enemies faces that we weren't in for an easy fight.
I watched as one student used his quirk to stiffen the balls and another seemingly used his quirk to throw the balls underground. My stomach clenched as I felt the earth vibrating as the balls zoomed about underneath it. "Step back everyone! Deviant! Copy me!" Earphone Jack shouted, stepping forward and plugging her earphone jacks into the speakers on her hands. I immediately knew what she planned to do. I smirked slightly as I transformed into Earphone Jack and copied her actions, plugging my own earphone jacks into the speakers which were now on my hands. I could feel the balls getting closer, we needed to act fast. Both Earphone Jack and I pounded out fists into the ground and allowed our heartbeat to flow through our body and into the speakers on our hands. "Heartbeat Distortion!" Earphone Jack shouted as the ground around us cracked and crumbled due to the amount of noise being run through it.
The balls which had once been concealed beneath the earth flew upwards and were heading straight for Can't Stop Twinkling. Before he could do anything about the balls heading his way, Pinky created an acid veil in front of him, dissolving the balls before they could do any damage. "Tch. They've gotten good. Everyone step back. Their defence is too good. I'm going to break them up!" Shindo snarled from atop his little plateau, placing his hands on the ground. "Everyone! Take out your walkie-talkies!" I shouted. The words had scarcely left my lips when the heart began to shake very violently.
As the earth shook, I managed to transform into a swallow and take off into the air. I darted around falling bits of rock as I flew upwards, trying to get an aerial view of the now destroyed battlefield. I could see all of my classmates as they pushed themselves out from beneath pieces of stone. I also watched as the students from Ketsubutsu prowled amongst the jagged mounds of earth. I had an idea. It was a stupid idea and I'd probably tire myself out, but if I wanted my class to pass this exam, it had to be done. I looked over the battlefield for a place where nobody was and darted towards it, I needed a bit of time to conduct my plan.
"This is Deviant calling in. Is everyone ok?" I whispered into my walkie-talkie, looking around me as I spoke. I got a blend of voices confirming that they were ok. I pressed my back up against a wall and sighed. "Ok, I have a plan. It's a bit dangerous though." I rushed out, conscious of the fact that I could be pounced upon at any minute. "What is it, Deviant?" Froppy's voice inquired, her voice was also hushed, an indication that she was also being cautious. "I can't explain it fully in case I get caught, but it won't work unless I have one vital piece of information. Can you all swim?" I asked, squeezing my eyes shut for a second and holding my breath. I heard somebody's footsteps getting closer and closer to me. "Yes!" "Of course!" "Yep!" were amongst the 14 responses I received. With confirmation that my classmates could in fact swim, I decided to go ahead with my plan. Shindo wasn't the only one who could completely change the terrain we fought on.
I took a deep breath and placed my right hand on the floor, my other hand clutching my walkie-talkie in a death grip. "Ok, everyone. Be prepared to take a dip." I warned before tucking my walkie-talkie into my pocket and placing my left hand on the floor. Drawing air through my nose, I let my power flow through my arms and into the floor. I pictured a huge body of water in my mind. Be it a lake or seemingly endless ocean. Any vast body of water was enough for me to transform the entire mountain area into a deep pool of water.
I laughed lightly as I fell through the water. I relished in the feeling of the water wrapping around my body. I knew that Froppy would also feel very refreshed. She would excel in the environment which I had created for her. I had been sinking through the water for too long by this point, my breath was running out and I remembered that as a human I needed to be able to breathe. Without a second thought, I transformed into an octopus and began propelling myself through the clear water.
I had hoped to find my classmates before I had to encounter an enemy, but unfortunately, this wasn't the case. When I had transformed the mountain area, I had left some places as rock, they were like islands in a vast ocean. I didn't know if everybody at Ketsubutsu could swim and I certainly didn't want to be responsible for the death of a student. It was upon one of these islands that I came across a small gathering of three students.
Even through the water, I could hear as Mera counted down the number of remaining spots. By this point, there were still 64 places left, but the fact that 36 people had already passed within the first 10 minutes of the exam made me nervous. I wanted to find my friends, but realistically, at the rate which the exam was going, it would take too long to find everyone and regroup. It was best for us to pursue our own endeavours and pray that our friends would make it through. With a plan in mind, I decided to just go for it and claim the three students on the island as my victims.
"Who the fuck turns an entire portion of the arena into a lake? What if people couldn't swim?" A gruff voice grumbled. I had transformed into a human once again and I was lurking below the surface of the water, listening to the distorted voices of my future victims. "Must have been someone with a really powerful quirk. Do you think it was someone from UA?" a different, more feminine voice asked. There was silence for a second before a third voice spoke. It sounded female as well, but slightly deeper than the first feminine voice. "I'm not sure. There is that one student with the transformation quirk, but could he do all of this?" the voice was hard to hear. The person must have spoken very softy since their voice barely carried underwater. "Whoever it is! We're gonna find them and make them pay!" the first voice growled. Hearing this, I thought it was time that I acted.
The look of surprise on the three student's faces when I practically shot out of the water and landed on their little island was hilarious. They all looked at me with wide eyes before standing up to activate their quirks. I gave them an apologetic smile, which was met with confusion before I transformed into Auntie Nemuri. The three students scarcely had time to utter the word 'Shit' before Auntie Nemuri's sleeping gas had filled the air. The male student hit the ground immediately, his grey hair splayed in a halo around his head. The two remaining students were girls, so it took a bit longer for the quirk to take effect. I felt sorry for them as they sluggishly stumbled around, trying in vain to fight me. After a minute of this, the two girls slumped forwards and fell to the floor, asleep.
I was quick to tag all of them with one of my rubber balls before clearing the air as much as I could. I didn't want them to sleep for too long. Once I had finished, the three tags placed on me all glowed blue. "You have passed, please make your way to the antechamber to get your targets removed." a mechanical female voice beeped before my targets fell silent. I heaved a sigh and glanced down at the three students before me. They looked to be in their second year, which meant I most likely hadn't completely messed up their life. They were going to be fine.
"Hey, Shoto!" I shouted in excitement as I rushed into the antechamber. Shoto looked away from the blank wall he was staring at and looked over to me. His blank face remained the same, as it usually did when we weren't alone and he could let his walls down, except for a slight fond gleam in his eyes. "Hello, Izuku, how did the test go for you?" Shoto asked. I smiled as I skipped over to him and fell into the seat beside him. "It was stressful. The entire class was attacked by Ketsubutsu and we all got split up. Then I transformed the entire area we were in into a lake. I took out three people in total." I explained happily to Shoto. Just as I finished speaking an official-looking man came over to take my targets. I waited patiently for him to unlock them and leave before turning to speak to Shoto some more.
"How was your test?" I asked, bouncing happily in my seat. "It was eventful. I was ambushed by six people but I managed to defeat them and claim their tags." Shoto shrugged. I beamed up at my boyfriend and took his hand into my own. "You took out six people! That's so cool! Hey, are you ok? You keep looking over at Inasa." My voice tapered off at the end, my gaze swivelling towards the direction in which Shoto was staring.
"I'm fine. He just keeps glaring at me like I did something wrong to him. I remember meeting him once but I don't think I did anything wrong." Shoto sighed, allowing his eyes to stray from Inasa to me. "I wouldn't worry about it, Sho. We all need to just focus on the exam, ok? If we get distracted somebody could end up failing and that would be terrible for our development as heroes. If someone fails, they'll be a year behind the rest of the class in terms of experience." I reminded Shoto, recounting what Dad, Papa, All Might and Nezu had all told us multiple times during the lead up to the exam. Shoto nodded his head before allowing it to flop on top of mine. "Yeah, you're right. If I get the chance, I'll question him after we all pass." Shoto whispered. I smiled and took Shoto's face into my hands, squeezing his cheeks slightly. "That's the spirit. Keep up that optimistic mindset." I beamed at my boyfriend. Shoto smiled at me ever so slightly. I loved seeing the slight quirk of his lips. The fondness in his eyes. It always made my day. A sudden thought occurred to me out of nowhere, making my mood sour dramatically.
"Hey, Shoto," I whispered slightly, staring down at my hands. Shoto's head immediately snapped over to look at me. His eyes showed just how worried he was about my sudden change in attitude. "What is it, Love? Why'd you suddenly get sad?" Shoto asked, taking my face into his hands. "It's just. Well... I just suddenly thought about what Endeavour has done to you. you were very obviously abused. We should tell an adult." I whispered, wincing as I randomly brought up my boyfriend's abusive past. Shoto's grip on my face tightened ever so slightly for a second before it relaxed slightly and he pulled away. "Who would believe us, Izu? He's a top hero." Shoto whispered brokenly. I took Shoto's chin into my hand, forcing him to look at me. "Shoto, sure it would be hard, but the least I want to happen is for Fuyumi to be your legal guardian. Maybe we should speak about this more later." I whispered, watching as Shinso walked into the room, a dejected look on his face. Shoto nodded his head and slumped backwards, eyes gaining a faraway look.
I am not at all happy with this. So that the end bit is so random. I just suddenly thought about it and immediately wanted to add it in.
Also from now on I'm unfortunately only going to be posting chapters for this story once a week. The pace at which I'm writing isn't the same as the pace that I'm updating. I want to give you decent length, good quality chapters and that isn't going to happen if I feel as though I'm rushing myself. Sorry.
Anyway, thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day wherever you are.
