Chapter 14: Birthday Boy
*Izuku's POV*
A week had passed since I was let out of the hospital and I couldn't have been happier. After a week of being confined to a wheelchair and my legs wobbling perilously every time I tried to take a step, I was finally out of that godforsaken wheelchair. I could finally walk properly on my own. Admittedly, sometimes my legs would wobble a bit and my arms would ache. Sometimes my hand would jerk around a tiny bit as a result of the electric currents which ran through me. But other than that, I was in good health and could use my quirk again. I don't think you can even begin to comprehend the relief I felt when I could finally use my quirk. The entire week, I had only been able to watch as my friends used their quirks for the most mundane things. Whether it be for entertainment purposes or their quirks were just so well integrated into their lives that they used them for things such as cooking, cleaning or charging their phone. Even though we hadn't been in class all week and therefore hadn't been training, I still felt a pool of jealousy towards my peers because they could use their quirks so freely. I felt useless. I buried the thought as soon as it cropped up, recalling what countless people had told me, but whenever I saw someone using their quirk, I couldn't help but feel as though I was weak.
"Ok. Just because you're out of that wheelchair, it doesn't mean you can go around causing trouble and getting hurt. At the moment, I'm saying that you can't transform your body for another day or so, just to make sure no damage is done to your bone structure. Don't look at me like that young man! I will, however, permit you to convert other things." Recovery Girl chastised me as she checked over my significantly better than before injuries. She would place a kiss here or there on bruises or small cuts, but otherwise, she was just checking me over. "Do you understand?" Recovery Girl asked, her voice sharp and her eyes narrowed. I nodded my head quickly, I didn't much feel like having Recovery Girl angry at me. That never tended to end well for me. "Good. Look after yourself, Izuku. Oh! Also, Dr Ihro said that he will be bringing your medication in two days time. I'll send someone to give it to you." Recovery Girl said, helping me up and off of the hospital bed. The bed may as well have had my name on it with all of the training accidents I got in. "By the way, Happy Birthday Izuku." Recovery Girl smiled at me before pushing me from the room and closing the door in my face. I shrugged slightly with a tiny smile on my face. I couldn't believe it was my 16th birthday.
I walked back towards Height's Alliance with a skip to my step. When I had woken up that morning and realised it was my birthday, I had been ecstatic. I knew that my friends were throwing a surprise party for me. I would have had to had been an idiot to not have seen all of the signs throughout the week. Sato baking a tiered cake and decorating it with heroes. He, of course, tried to hide the cake from me, avoiding any and all questions I had. That wasn't the only indication though. Kiri, Kami, Sero and Shinso had all gone to the shop the previous day and come back with bags full of food. This was highly unusual seeing as all of the food in the dorms was replaced mysteriously when we were all sleeping. The food elves theory was very common amongst my classmates. When I had asked what food they had brought, the four of them had shared a desperate look before Shinso stepped up and smoothly lied to me, "Nothing much, just a few snacks for game night." he said with a voice like silk. I would have been inclined to believe him if I hadn't attended every game night since we had all started living in the dorms. I knew that we never needed that much food. Another indicator had been when Dad had kept me firmly away from the lounge area that morning when he was pushing me towards the main campus to Recovery Girl's office. He hadn't let me look back, a clear indication that people were doing something which concerned me not knowing in there. The final clue was less of a clue and more like an obvious slap to the face. Kaminari accidentally told me when he was in his dumb state. He had short-circuited at something Shinso had said. I hadn't even asked him, he had just stumbled over to me and babbled out, "I can't wait to see you at Izuku's surprise party, dude." before stumbling away. So yeah, I knew about my surprise party.
I had nearly made it to my dorm building before my mood was ruined by the unfortunate appearance of one Monoma Neito. "Well look who it is. Midoriya Izuku, or should I saw Aizawa-Midoriya Izuku. Tch, no wonder you do so well in class, your Dad probably bumps up your grades to make himself look better." Monoma said in a petulant voice. I sighed and turned around to look at my year mate. "Please go away, Monoma. I'm in a good mood and I really don't need you ruining it." I sighed in a resigned tone of voice. "Don't act so high and mighty, Aizawa-Midoriya, you're the reason the entire school now has tighter restrictions. We were all enjoying the training camp until you decided to get yourself kidnapped." Monoma scoffed, crossing his arms and rolling his eyes. At his words, I clenched my fists and gritted my teeth. If he had said that to anyone else, I could have easily said what I knew was correct. That it wasn't anyone's faults but the villains who attacked. But, Monoma's words played upon my own guilt and insecurities. I knew it wasn't my fault, but my mind wouldn't let me escape the thought which said it was, that I was to blame. Monoma had no way of knowing that I wasn't really stable when it came to my mental health and that his words triggered something in my mind, but I couldn't help but be bitter. "Look, Monoma, like I said, I was in a good mood. I don't want to talk about this. You and I both know that it's not my fault. It's the villains. Even if nobody had been kidnapped, the villains still attacked. We would have been evacuated anyway. Now, leave me alone and go and annoy someone else." I gritted out before spinning on my heel and storming away. My once jovial and positive mood turned sour.
As soon as I reached Height's Alliance, I yanked the door open and was about to storm in when I was assaulted by a wall of sound. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY IZUKU!" the entire class shouted at me. I looked up and saw the entire class stood in the entryway, all with wide beaming smiles. Shoji held the three-tiered cake in his arms whilst Hagakure and Mina held a banner between them, the words 'Happy Birthday Izu' painted on the forest green surface in black paint. Around the words, it looked as if Kaminari had painted some things. Dogs, cats, foxes, a silhouette of me and the silhouettes of some of my favourite heroes. I could feel tears beading in my eyes. My sour mood immediately dispelled. "Guys! This is so cool! Thank you!" I laughed slightly, wiping the few tears which had fallen from my eyes. The entire class surged forwards and pulled me into a mass group hug. I smiled as I wrapped my arms around several of my classmates. Every day I was reminded why I loved everyone in my class just a little bit more.
The party was amazing, to say the least. It started off with everyone in the lounge, dancing along to the music which pounded from the speakers. I danced happily with all of my friends. Twirling Ochako around. Stumbling as I tried to follow Mina's brilliant dancing. Laughing at Kaminari and Kirishima as they both attempted to breakdance. Pulling Kacchan onto the dance floor so that he could dance with us. Watching everyone's mouths drop at how good a dancer Kacchan was. "I didn't know Katsuki could dance," Shoto said with a slight hint of amusement in his voice as he watched Mina and Kacchan have a dance battle. " Well, you know how Kacchan is. He wants to one-up everyone. Someone in middle school boasted that they were the best dancer in the year and Kacchan took that as a challenge. He challenged the kid to a dance battle. So the two agreed to dance a week later. Kacchan practised every night, perfecting every little move. When the time came, Kacchan demolished the kid." I chuckled fondly at the memory. The reason Kacchan was so good at some of the most random things is that he feels the need to be better than everyone. That's the reason he's good at speed knitting and adequate at playing the violin. Don't ask how he found himself learning how to do those.
Once the dance battle was over (ending in a tie, to the displeasure of Kacchan), everyone moved into the kitchen to get cake and party food. I shovelled food into my mouth at an unhealthy rate before eating at least 3 pieces of Sato's amazing cake. I couldn't stop complimenting him. Everyone laughed and chatted as we all sat down and watched a film whilst eating. By this point, Dad, Papa and Auntie Nemuri had joined us. They sat a bit further away from the class to give us a bit of privacy. We watched a few films before Dad said that we had to start cleaning up. This earned groan from the class, but we all complied and started picking up stray bits of rubbish, popping balloons and washing up plates.
By the time we finished everything, it was roughly 7 o'clock. Nowhere near the time which we had to be in our rooms, but the party was winding down. "I have an idea, why don't we play a song." Kyoka said, sitting up slightly from her position leaning on Yaomomo. I nodded my head eagerly and looked over to Kacchan who nodded his head as well. "What song?" Kacchan asked gruffly. "Ao To Natsu! (by Mrs Green Apple)" I shouted immediately, not giving Kyoka time to suggest a song. Kyoka laughed slightly and nodded her head, "Alright. We'll do that one since the birthday boy demands it. The new song we're working on seems a bit too sombre for the occasion anyway." Kyoka said with a shrug, standing up and walking towards a side room. "Luckily, I had the forethought to bring our instruments down," she smirked slightly. She definitely planned to have us play.
It didn't take long for us to set up the instruments and for Kyoka to bring up the piano recording on her phone. She connected her phone to the speakers, looked at Kacchan and I, before pressing play and starting the music. I started playing my guitar, accompanied by the recorded piano and Kacchan. "Suzushii kaze fuku. Aozora no nioi..." Kyoka began to sing. I smiled brightly as my best friend's voice washed over me and my fingers moved on their own over the neck of my guitar.
The song ended and, as was usual, the class gave a standing ovation before we all went our separate ways. "Izuku, come here!" Papa called happily to me. I smiled as I bounced over to my parents and Auntie. "Hey, Papa." I smiled at him, hugging me tightly before moving onto Auntie Neumri and finally hugging Dad. My hug with Dad was a tiny bit longer than my hug with Papa and Auntie Nemuri. It had always been that way when I hugged my dad. I loved my Papa and Aunties but I felt like I had a deeper connection with Dad. Maybe it was because he was the one who saved me or maybe it was something else. "We've got your presents!" Papa beamed at me, pulling a bag from behind his back. I smiled at him and plopped myself down on the floor in front of the sofa which they were sat on. Auntie Nemuri hands me her presents first. I opened them enthusiastically before jumping up and wrapping my arms around her neck and hugging her. She had given me a book about hero history and some new guitar strings which looked pretty snazzy.
Papa gave me his gifts next, he had a wide smile on his face as I unwrapped a new pair of red high-end headphones and a jacket. Upon seeing the jacket my eyes went wide and I somehow managed to smile even wider. In my hands was a near impossible to find a piece of Eraserhead merch. It was a black hoodie with the grey silhouette of my dad on the back and yellow Earserhead goggles on the hood. I hugged Papa tightly, nearly cutting off his oxygen supply. Papa tapped my arm to get out of the headlock. I smiled at him bashfully as Nemuri chuckled at me.
Dad was the last one to give me gifts. He put the gift in my hands with a small, genuine smile. I think I heard someone gasp as they passed us, but I couldn't be sure since I was so invested in unwrapping the gift in my lap. Once all of the brightly coloured wrapping paper had been stripped away, I was left with a new All Might figurine and a book on martial arts. I looked up at my dad and was about to thank him, but the words stopped on the tip of my tongue. I stared in awe at the brand new, metallic green, white and black guitar in Shota's hands. "Wha-" I gaped. "We saw this model in the music shop once and you sid that you were interested in it." Dad smiled gently, placing the guitar in my arms. I gaped at the gift some more before I gathered my wits and leapt forwards to hug my dad.
After biding my family goodnight, I walked up to my room, arms full of my gifts. "Wow. That guitar looks really cool." Shoto's cool voice said from beside me as I reached my dorm room. "Oh, Shoto. I didn't see you there. It's really cool! I've wanted this model for a while now, I was actually saving up, but Dad beat me to it." I chuckled. Shoto smiled at me. It was a small smile which was normally reserved for the confines of our rooms. My cheeks warmed at the beautiful sight before me. "Let me help you get the door," Shoto said, pushing my door open for me. I nodded my head and allowed Shoto to open my door so that I could shuffle in and place everything on my bed. I looked around and saw that my other guitar was already on its stand. It creeped me out to think the Kyoka could get into my room so easily despite not having my key. I'm fairly certain she knows how to pick locks. "Thanks for the help." I turned to Shoto. I was surprised at how close he was. My nose was practically touching his chest. I stepped back and looked up at my boyfriend, "You ok, Shoto?" I asked. Shoto looked at me a bit closer and I felt myself blush further under his gaze. Shoto leaned down and pecked me on the cheek, placing a small box into my hand, "Happy Birthday, Sweetheart." Shoto whispered before straightening and walking away. I stared after him, baffled before looking down at the box in my hand.
After preparing for bed, I finally decided to open the gift that Shoto had given me. I was slightly nervous seeing as Shoto hadn't said anything except for 'Happy Birthday' when giving it to me. I took a deep breath and cracked the lid of the box open. I gaped at what was inside. It was a beautiful platinum bracelet. The clasp of the bracelet was in the shape of a heart, which warmed my heart, and the bracelet was engraved with a beautiful wave pattern. Alongside the waves, engraved onto the bracelet, I can see an I and a S, both inside a heart. I felt small tears of love and joy bead in my eyes as I laid on my bed, the bracelet clasped in my hands as I fell asleep.
Sorry if the end bits get a bit iffy. I wrote this entire thing in one sitting, which I don't usually do unless it's the first chapter of a book. I wasn't sure how to describe the bracelet. The song at the top is the song I was referring to last chapter. Anyway, thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day wherever your are.
