The Chaperones
A shiver passed through Danny Fenton and his eyes blearily peeked open. His room was barely visible in the moonlight but Danny's eyes could detect every nook and cranny of the place.
He groaned softly so as not to wake up the others and sat up in bed. The sleepy headed boy slowly untangled himself from Dorian's ghostly tail and fazed out of David's grip on him. He stepped out of the bed, dragging the sheets with him to protect him from the night chill, but especially because his body refused to leave the warmth of his bed. He stepped over Damien, who was stretched on a mattress next to his own and floated to make sure he didn't step on Dani's curled up form right next to Damien.
Even though they had a guestroom, the siblings slept together in one room. Only Jazz didn't join them because, as she put it, she needed her personal space and a break away from all the Dannys in the house.
His mom and dad had promised to buy a bigger house to fit all of them as soon as they found a suitable one, but nobody was in any hurry.
Danny shuffled to the door, fazing right through it, and made his way downstairs.
He could hear scuffling from the kitchen and the sound of cabinets being opened and closed.
Danny stood in the doorway to see the Box Ghost floating around and stacking different kinds of boxes on the counter. Danny could hear Cujo barking from outside. His parents had let him keep him as a guard dog, but he had to stay outside in the little house they had made him. Danny sent a calming chill to the dog's ectoplasmic aura and Cujo whined, going back to bed.
The Box Ghost hadn't noticed Danny until he turned around and froze at seeing the sleepy teen wrapped up in sheets and looking at him blearily.
"Ummm. I will just take these and leave..." He slowly reached out to throw all the packets in his bigger carton box.
"Not the chocolate milk." Danny whined and Box Ghost paused.
He shook it. "But it's way outdated."
"Oh." Danny huffed. "Fine then. I'll have to go buy groceries again."
The Box Ghost grinned and worked on stacking it all in his boxes.
"Don't forget the Fruitloops."
"Never." The ghost closed the lid and let it levitate. "Tell the yellow girl Box Lunch is happy."
Danny managed a smile. "It's called blonde, Boxy. And her name is Star. You mean, Box Lunch likes the toys? Yeah sure I'll tell her tomorrow." He glanced a the clock hanging on the kitchen wall. "Or today I guess. Can't you pick a better time to raid my house, Boxy? And I thought I told you not to take the meat. Your wife has enough."
"I will go now, bye!" The Box Ghost fazed through the ceiling along with two big boxes. "Goodnight."
Danny frowned after him and sighed. He turned back around to get a few last hours of sleep.

Several groans escaped the occupants as the blaring of an alarm filled the space of the room.
Danny was instantly awake and he blinked away the leftover drowsiness. He stretched, moaning as he did, and sat up on the bed. Slowly, his siblings also forced their eyes open and threw the covers off. But it was too slow for Danny and he threw the curtains open, engulfing the room in sunlight.
"Danny!" David grumbled. "How dare you. Come on."
Danny smirked and tried to step over Dani and Damien to get to the bathroom. "I call dibs on the toilet!"
"No." Damien reached over and grabbed Danny's ancle, making him trip with a yelp. "It's my turn to go first!"
Danny quickly twisted out and ran into the bathroom. "You snooze, you loose, man."
He could hear Dorian's laugh at the pun and grinned. The others weren't used to waking up as early as Danny always had to for school. And Danny had run on much less sleep before thanks to the ghost attacks at night. However, now that his parents knew of his nightly escapades they forced him to tell them every time a ghost showed up so they could go with him. Of course, Danny didn't tell them about every time. He wanted them to get enough sleep. Danny could handle it. Besides, his parents had been pulling many full nighters working on stabilizing Danny's clones and worrying about where to get birth certificates for them.
Thankfully, Valerie knew of someone who forged documents. She told them it was from the time she lived in that old rundown street and she'd seen it happening once or twice in front of a house where there was literally a sign that advertised it. She denied to have had anymore contact with them, but Danny still believed her birth certificate was false and her name was actually Violet.
Either way, Maddie and Jack hadn't liked it, but they had had no choice but to have them make birth certificates for Danny's clones, giving them ages ranging from 15 to 18 and having them be Danny's cousins whose parents had died and were now adopted by the Fentons. They needed a story to tell anyone who asked.
Now, it had been almost seven months since they had gone to the Field Trip and most everyone had passed to the next grade. Danny's clones had spent a lot of their time studying at home to try and catch up with their education so they could join Danny at school in the new year.
Maddie and Jack had finally been able to stabilize them completely. It had taken a lot of time in the lab and some experimentation that scared Jack and Maddie even more than it scared the kids, as desperate as the Fenton parents were to make them feel comfortable at home. However they finally looked like normal teenagers. David had acquired skin (much to his delight) and hair. It turned out he had Danny's pitch black hair, but his skin had more color (making Danny look more like a zombie thanks to his pale skin, which was ironic because David was the one that used to be made out of bones) and his eyes were green. Damien's teeth became a bit less pointy, but they couldn't do anything about the size so they would just say he had puberty early (everyone would believe it given how big Jack is and that those two practically shared some genes). Dani and Dorian had stopped melting and were able to use their powers much more often. However, there was nothing they could do to give Dorian legs and make him look more human so he would have to do homeschooling, something that Maddie gladly helped with. Jazz was starting college and didn't have time for that.
Danny sat on the toilet as David walked in and washed his face. He brushed his hair to the side in his usual hairstyle and told Danny to hurry up. Just as Danny was about to walk out to change he was pulled back inside and David started combing his hair. "You really have to take more care of yourself," he reprimanded. "Your hair is a bird's nest."
Danny groaned, but he let him. Dani ignored the both of them as she went to the toilet as well. She didn't have a problem being with the boys as she wasn't used to it being any different. And the boys couldn't care less. She was their sister just as much as they were brothers.
David let go of Danny and grabbed Dani's hair as she washed her hands and face. He brushed that too.
Danny pushed Dorian off the bed. "Get out, lazybones. Just because you're homeschooled doesn't mean you have the privilege to sleep until late."
Damien huffed as Dorian moaned from his spot on the ground. "She'll make you wash the dishes if you don't go down with us." Those words of encouragement were all Dorian needed to push himself off the floor.
"Fine. Pass me the shirt on the chair."
Finally the five siblings stumbled down the stairs in an attempt to get to a seat first.
Neither Jack nor Maddie looked up when the small stampede skidded to a stop in the kitchen and jumped on the chairs.
All Maddie said was: "What did I say about running in the house."
The teens muttered their apologies as they glared at Dorian, who was smiling triumphantly.
"Don't look so smug," Dani grumbled. "You cheated."
"I have to use all my advantages, Danielle." Dorian smirked at them.
Danny planted his hands on the table. "I didn't use my ghost half either. We had agreed not to use them. You're allowed to fly but not use intangibility."
Maddie ignored the bickering as she spoke. "Dorian can you go get Jazz for me? Tell her to leave her books out of the kitchen."
The siblings stuck their tongue out and made faces at Dorian, who rolled his eyes at them and flew back up.
"Good morning, kids," Jack greeted his children and received a few 'Morning Dad's. He grinned as he turned on Danny. "Any ghosts?"
Danny shook his head. "Only the Box Ghost. By the way, mom, he took the chocolate milk. It was expired."
"Boxy was here?" Damien huffed dejectedly. "So I still don't have a ghost sense." They had long since concluded only Danny appeared to possess that ability, but Damien thought it was such an awesome power and always ignored Danny's arguments about how annoying it was.
Maddie opened the fridge and sure enough almost a third of its contents were gone. "Did you tell him I said to only take what was expired?"
Danny nodded as he tried to pour himself some milk on his cereal and at the same time pushing Dani away, who kept trying to snatch it from his hands. "Get yourself some cereal first." He scrunched his nose at her empty bowl. "Seriously, who pours milk before getting their cereal."
Maddie grumbled and made a mental note to write the new groceries list down. It was so hard keeping up with everyone's food.
"Good morning." Jazz walked in after a floating Dorian and tried to find a seat in between her siblings.
Maddie nodded in greeting turned to Dorian. "You finished the homework I assigned you?"
Dorian sighed. "Yes, and it was hard."
Maddie smiled. "Your brothers and sister are getting the same topics at school and I can't have you slacking off."
Slowly, the Fentons finished eating and went back upstairs to brush their teeth and get their backpacks.
Jack looked them over as they passed by the door. "Are you sure? No problems at all?"
They shook their heads.
"All systems working? Digestive?" Jack ignored their grumbles and whining and turned to Dani. "How about you, Danigirl. Is your cycle going well?"
"Oh my gosh, Dad!"
"Have you packed your stash? Here's a chocolate bar. I've read on internet that's something girls like..."
"Thank you, dad." Dani smiled through the blush and snatched the bar, quickly making her exit and ignoring her brothers laughs.
Jack rushed to the door and yelled after them. "You have money for lunch?"
"Yes dad!!" The group gave Cujo a pet as they passed. The dog tried to follow them, but was held back by the ghost leash.
Danny turned around one last time. "Don't forget to walk Cujo around! I'll take him out in the afternoon!!"
The small group hurried their way to school, meeting up with a few of their friends on the way. Once, a net was thrown from the side of the road straight towards Danny. But Danny didn't even flinch as the blast from a weapon disintegrated it. He heard some shouts of frustration and smiled. The Hunt had been trying to catch him while foiling each other's plans constantly during these last three months, when they had finally found out where he lived. This was just a normal occurrence by now and no one from their group looked up at the incident.
Finally they reached the building and shoved their ways towards their lockers after saying goodbyes to each other.
Danny grinned as he met up with Tucker. They high-fived and kept walking to get their books. On the way they met with Dash, who smiled awkwardly and excitedly asked when the next self defence lesson Danny gave them would be. He blushed when Danny told him that tomorrow and to not ask him in front of the whole school.
Other students looked at their interaction in shock but most of them had gotten used to Danny's former bullies suddenly adoring Danny like that.
In fact, Dash wasn't the only one that had changed.
The whole school had realized how after the first field trip to the Ghost Zone, the group that had gone seemed to have changed completely. They treated each other so differently and seemed to be like a small family. They could often be seen talking quietly to each other about something or other and others could only catch that it was about ghosts before they shut up. Everyone knew something big had happened, but when asked no one in the group would spill anything but what they'd already heard from Mr. Lancer's notes.
They were recognizable by the bracelets that were wrapped tightly around each of their forearms. Only Kim, Danny and those newbies didn't have one, but everyone knew they were part of the group, although they had no idea why.
They would stand up for each other and do each other favors and they weren't afraid of ghosts anymore. They were the kind of people you would want around if a ghost attack happened.
And if anybody bullied someone from that group, they would be immediately defended by another from the strange group. Whether the person was a nerd or an outcast or an A-lister brought no change to the situation. However, if someone were to even give Danny Fenton a dirty look, the whole group would chase ravaging after the offending person. Nobody dared be unkind to that boy. Not after Jake had attempted to push the kid into his locker and they noticed. Nobody really knows exactly what happened but most had heard the screams.
This strange group was nicknamed the Chaperones, because people had heard that another Field Trip would be organized this year with new students. However, one of the students from the original group would tag along because they had experience. This was one of the reasons but mainly the students wanted to go with and relive the adventure. Of course they would be followed by Danny Phantom to make sure no one did anything stupid.
Said boy was happily skipping to class. He entered his geography class and looked around at where to sit. He saw Star wave towards an empty seat next to her and Chelsea and he smiled, sitting down. "Hey Star. Boxy turned up and he says Lunch Box is happy."
Star brightened. "Really? Those toys used to be my cousin's favorites. I knew she would like them. Can I go visit them tomorrow?"
Danny pursed his lips and grabbed his notebook, where he wrote down all the requests his friends had. Most of which were asking him to take them to visit their friends in the Ghost Zone.
Chelsea leaned forward when she saw what he was reaching for. "Oh yeah, I want to check on Blackjack. Have to make sure he'd doing alright." After some intensive training, Chelsea was allowed to let Blackjack fly around freely. She would visit him frequently, much to Danny's annoyance. She did that by standing anywhere near the Ghost Zone and yelling out loudly. He would come.
Danny groaned. "You just saw him two days ago!" He jotted down Star's name on the blank space under the word 'Saturday'. "Star, I've got you at eleven. Is that ok?"
"Yes. Thank you."
"Please, Danny," Chelsea begged. "See you've got a free spot at two on Saturday."
"I want to rest in between, Chelsea."
"You can visit Leroy in the meantime." She wiggled her eyebrows.
Danny paused and slowly scribbled down her name. She cheered.
The teacher called everyone to calm down and open their books. Everything was going quietly, which had to be a huge warning sign because nothing is quiet in Danny's life.
Suddenly a phone started belting out the Ghost Busters theme song. Everyone turned to look at Danny as he straightened and snatched the extra phone he had, that was specifically only to be called when there was a ghost attacking, out of his pocket.
Danny grinned at the teacher sheepishly as she glared at him, knowing that that music meant Danny was going to ditch class, but not knowing what for. "Daniel Fenton," she warned, but Danny was already halfway out the door.
"I'm very sorry, Miss. I have to pick this up." He ran out. "Star!"
"I've got you, Danny!" Star smiled. She would send him the homework later.
"Good luck!" Chelsea shouted.
Danny picked up as he made a dash for the bathroom. Kwan's voice rang through.
"Hey Danny. There's a big one in the street by the Nasty Burger. You'll see it when you get there."
"Alright. Thanks, Kwan. Remember: stay clear. You're only out there to report, not to engage."
He could feel the eyeroll. "Yes, captain. Be careful."
Danny grinned as he opened the bathroom doors. "When am I not?"
He heard a snort on the other side of the line but hang up before Kwan could give him the list. Danny went ghost and flew out, looking for trouble.
He grinned as he flew by the hallways and waved at the students who were passing to their next classroom, including Paulina and Richard, who waved enthusiastically.
The students weren't afraid of him. They knew he was a ghost that didn't mean them any harm. Most adults knew that too, and Danny had introduced Cujo and Leroy to them. He was working on showing the world what ghosts were really like. Just like his parents, who were now giving workshops on ghosts. Few people attended, but it was better than nothing. The Field Trip was also not only for the humans to see how ghosts were, but for ghosts to meet some normal humans that weren't shooting at them and screaming in terror. It was for the two species to learn how to interact.
The others from his group of friends were also spreading word around about how good ghosts existed.
Everyone was putting in their two cents. All to reach their goal. That ghosts and humans would someday co-exist in peace.
Danny grinned exuberantly at the thought that his dream might someday come true. He couldn't imagine how life would be if their goal was reached.
Can you?
