Ghost anatomy
Fenton grimaced. He was looking at the inside of the stables and it wasn't pretty.
Two horses lay on the ground, heads lowered. One cow was barely standing.
And nothing more. "Where are the rest?" Fenton asked one of the ghosts that escorted him here.
The ghosts stayed at the door and looked pretty uncomfortable. One of them spoke up. "Umm. We usually don't keep the sick ones alive. We don't want it spreading more than it already is. Queen Pandora told us to keep these for you."
Fenton sucked in air through his teeth. He rubbed his hands together to get rid of his nervousness. He glanced at the ghosts. "You can go if you want. You don't have to stay."
They hesitated even though they looked ready to bolt. "Are you sure?"
Fenton nodded. They weren't medics. They didn't need to be anywhere near the sick. The two said their thanks as they made to walk as far away as they could.
The cow shuffled and Fenton's attention was back to it. He slowly approached it and plopped on the ground next to it. He grimaced at the contaminated air near the beast. "Common, you can do this," he tried to encourage himself. "You're doing this for them. If you do it right, you'll be helping the cow." And if he got enough control over his powers and using them in this way, he might be able to change Phantom's appearance. He smiled. We would look just like before. Nothing will have changed except for him getting other powers.
He sighed and put that thought in the back of his head. He had to concentrate on this first.
The cow let out a small whimper and Fenton flinched. He carefully layed his hand on the animal's neck and stroked it. "Alright, calm down. This isn't going to hurt," he reassured the cow and himself. The cow didn't answer.
Fenton took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He directed his attention to the beast under his hand and the ectoplasm in it. He inspected the molecules. Much more in depth than he had ever done. It was fascinating. He never could have thought ectoplasm could be so complex. Man, he was starting to sound like his dad.
It was different from the ectoplasm that made up the air. He knew there should be a difference. The air is breathable. A piece of meat isn't. But he hadn't really thought much about it. Now though, he could feel it. Not only the state of matter. The whole system was different.
Really, the air and the body only had one little thing in common. That one gene which was how the Eduqa traveled.
Fenton spread his focus to the center of the body. Where the core was.
He gasped in wonder.
The core was pulsing. Not like a beating heart, but like an electric shock. Sending currents of energy throughout the body. That was all an ectoplasmic being really was if you narrowed it down, a ball of energy.
The currents sent the ectoplasm churning. It could be compared to blood without the veins or arteries holding it back.
Like insects, Fenton remembered. An open circulatory system.
The only thing keeping the 'blood' from seeping out was the thin but hard outer shell. The skin, if you will.
Fenton was too fascinated by all he was finding out he forgot what he was supposed to be doing.
He found something else. That ghostly DNA his parents had talked about. Or....he guessed it was DNA. It wasn't the usual twisted ladder form, his microscopic insight could tell that much. They were many different small blotches of information. All bundled together or floating around.
This must be where all the cow's genes and personality traits where decoded. Fenton wondered how his halfa form had it.
Speaking of personalities, do ghosts have brains?
Fenton traveled up to the head of the unmoving cow, not really expecting to actually find something. He certainly wasn't expecting sticky substances that were stretched across the inside of the skull. Two strings were connected to the eyeballs and stretched to the center where other strings connected. He wasn't sure what the other sticky strings were for but he guessed they controlled a part of the cow. One of the strings made its direct path towards the core, winding around the voice box and submerging into the energy of the core. That string probably kept the thing pulsing.
One particular part of the 'brain' caught Fenton's attention. A little ball at the back. It seemed attached to all the other strings. He wasn't sure what that was for. He would ask his parents later.
The cow shifted, snapping Fenton from his thoughts.
Oh right, he remembered, the cow's dying and I'm here inspecting its body functions. He shook his head. Ok that sounded weird. Back to dying cow.
Fenton held in his breath as he scanned for anything suspicious and immediately sensed what was wrong.
One of the genes flowing around in the churning ectoplasm wasn't like the others. Fenton didn't know how he knew, but it felt wrong.
Also, it was yellow.
So I found it. How do I stop it.
He found that the shocks the core send out were energizing it. The yellow particles bathed in the sea of energy around it.
It disgusted him.
Maybe if he stopped the electric shocks to reach the particles.
No, they were too spread out along the body. He would just stop the other substances from getting energy and the cow would fade.
No, he had to come at this another way.
And so, Fenton spent his time bringing up ideas and throwing them away. Each too risky. Even if the cow was meant to be a guinea pig for if things worked or not, Fenton would rather not kill it.
Back at the ship Phantom groaned. He lay sprawled over Leroy, who hadn't moved an inch. The monster was used to staying still in one confined space. Phantom wasn't (fortunately or unfortunately. Whichever way you look at it). He rolled over and stared at the ceiling, bored out of his mind.
He wished he could at least have his powers so he had something to do. He was a restless boy. Something not even Tucker could satisfy. He was back at the console, leaving the ghost alone to his thoughts.
And the rest of the ghosts and classmates. But they didn't count, they were talking to each other or sleeping.
Phantom wondered what the other Danny was doing. He was missing his human half. His body felt wrong without it. He didn't like it one bit. He wanted to be whole.
Phantom was suddenly overcome by an overwhelming feeling of homesickness. Then a pain erupted in his chest. He could feel his core yearning for human qualities he lacked at the moment. He felt it pulse and all at once his whole body was screaming for something to come back.
Phantom groaned and rolled to the side, falling off Leroy in the process. He wrapped his arms around his stomach and curled his legs up.
Leroy whined and sniffed at him, licking him. Phantom didn't notice. Too much in pain.
David noticed. "Phantom?" He approached the squirming ghost. "You ok?" When he didn't respond David knelt by him and patted Phantom's cheek. "Hey guys? Something is wrong."
His siblings turned and gasped. Nathan gripped his hair. "Is he dying?!"
Tucker ran in. "What the heck is happening."
Kim knelt next to David and examined the ghost on the ground, who was now gasping for air he didn't need. His aura flickered brightly and he clawed at his stomach as if trying to rip it open. She bit her lip in agitation. "I don't kow!"
Damien clenched his fists. He said what they were all thinking in worry. "He's not infected is he?"
Phantom started coughing and everyone took a few steps back. He sucked in some more, trying to get air in his nonexistent lungs.
Kim shook her head. "No. Remember what Mrs. Fenton said. We don't know how his body would react to separating from its human half."
Nathan waved his hands up in a panic. "So you're saying its trying to revive him or something!?"
"I don't know," Kim shouted back.
Suddenly it was quiet. Everyone looked back to see Phantom groaning on the ground.
Tucker held his arms and helped him to sit up. "You ok man?"
Phantom stretched his sore back. He nodded. His voice sounded scratchy. "Ugh. What was that. I felt like my molecules were trying to rearrange themselves."
Kim nodded like that was completely normal. "You miss your human half."
"Oh." Phantom was quiet as this sunk in. "So is this gonna happen every five minutes or something?"
Tucker shrugged, something that didn't ease anyone's nerves. "The only thing that's for sure is that we need to fix you." He looked around at everyone. "And fast."
Sam sighed from where she was leaning on the wall. She glanced at Agafya. The ghost was like a mother figure to Sam. From all the times she, Tucker and Danny had come to visit Pandora's castle they had come to know almost everyone in the castle and everyone knew them. Agafya had immediately adopted them as her 'children'. It wasn't official and the kids already had a mother but it was nice to have a second ghostly mother too.
Agafya had mothered them and Always welcomed them with open arms. So kind and gentle and always accepting. Something Sam had always looked for in her own mother. Don't get her wrong, she loved her mother although the woman could be nosy and way to peppy.
Sam ran a hand through Agafya's hair like how the ghost would usually do to her.
"Hey."
Sam jumped when a voice broke her out her thoughts. She looked up to see Melissa holding a plate of food. She looked nervous as she held it out. "Hey. So are you hungry. We were eating lunch over there and I brought you your plate cause I figured you were hungry." She trailed off and just held out the plate for Sam to take.
Sam glanced to the right to see all the students huddled together in the corner, sitting down and eating food Mr. Fenton was removing from the storage which apparently had an outside opening. She took the plate and sat down next to the bed. She wasn't about to leave Agafya's side.
Melissa paused where she was standing. Then she surprised Sam by plopping down next to her. "So, you know her?"
Sam blinked at her in confusion before nodding. She took a bite before responding. "We visited here a lot and she is like a mother figure."
"Oh" Melissa fidgeted with her fingers as Sam ate. "I uhhh I hope she gets better."
"Thanks." Sam glanced at Agafya before putting another piece of food in her mouth. "I hope so too."
Melissa stayed quiet before sighing. "Look we got of the wrong foot. Can we start again?"
Sam looked at her curiously and Melissa quickly elaborated. "Not as friends. I mean that would be ok. But we don't need to be friends immediately. Just...as a person who goes to my class and I tolerate?"
The goth narrowed her eyes in thought. She nodded slowly. Tolerate...she could do that. "But Danny's mine."
Melissa held her hands up. "Yeah I know." She paused. "He's a great guy, though."
Sam frowned at her before coming to the conclusion that she didn't mean it like that. She smiled. "He is. And thank you."
"For what?" Melissa cocked her head.
"For not being clingy like Paulina."
Melissa laughed. "Sure thing."
