Do your best. Fail. Try again.

Sam snorted at Dash when he and Kwan left the room as soon as they could without seeming uncool. But she could tell by their green expressions that they felt sick. Most other students had left. Either to explore or to escape the depressive atmosphere.

Sam stayed for obvious reasons. She was a goth and depressive atmospheres fit in her comfort zone. And she knew most of the people in these sick beds. She wasn't necessarily friends with them but they had known each other for a few years so you grow on each other eventually.

Sam heard something from the bed she was passing and she looked over. It was Pace. He was twitching and groaning. Sam's eyebrows furrowed in worry and she beckoned for a nurse. "Is he alright? What's happening to him?" She quickly changed her question because he was obviously not alright.

The nurse only sighed. "He's experiencing one of the last stages of the Eduqa. It won't be long before..."

Sam's eyes widened and she returned her gaze to Pace, who was gritting his teeth and shaking slightly. His aura was basically nonexistent now and all the green has left his body. Instead coloring his skin with a sickly yellow.

Sam gasped as she took in his familiar situation. Agafya had been just like that a few hours ago. She whirled around to see two doctors by her bedside. They were speaking to each other in a hurry and slight panic. One of them shouted: "Call for Danny!"

Sam ran up and pushed herself so she could stand next to the bed. Her hand flew to her mouth.

Agafya was crumbling. Literally. Her fingers had already turned to dust as had her toes. Her hands were slowly fading away and her hair was almost completely gone.

Sam took a step back and blinked back tears.

Oh Danny, hurry up.

------- 1 hour ago------totortureyou--

Fenton huffed in frustration. He had been at this for what seemed like hours but were probably just 40 minutes.

He broke his concentration from the cow before him and stretched his back that hurt from being hunched over so long. He had been racking his brain for a way to remove the infection from the body. Fenton's eyes snapped open. That's what he had to do.

He quickly returned his attention back to the cow who had long since fallen asleep. Fenton concentrated on one cell. One yellow molecule and he searched for the DNA inside. He rearranged it and concentrated on making sure the Eduqa disappeared completely instead of only removing it.

The cow shifted and let out a whimper but Fenton was too distracted. He flipped the molecule so it was connected to something else and he let out a surprised yelp when the whole molecule turned green.

Fenton gasped and was startled out of his concentration. He stared at the cow and blinked. Then a grin broke out and he flung his arms up. "Yeah! I did it! Haha!!" He did a little dance. "Take that you stupid bacteria." He paused. Wait a second. This spreads.

He quickly lunged his focus back in the cow's body to find...nothing. Not a single green molecule or a sign that it had existed. Fenton frowned but he wasn't going to be discouraged. He had found a cure. He just had to perfect his skill so he could heal the whole body before it was infected by the sick cells.

After about an hour some of the ghosts came running up. Fenton looked up in confusion.

They immediately shouted for him to come.

"Why?" Fenton asked, getting up. "What's wrong?"

"It's Agafya!"

The human froze. His breath caught in his throat. "But- but I'm not ready. I haven't practiced enough."

"Do you have a cure?" One of them asked in a panic and he snatched Fenton's arm, leading him away from the stalls when the boy nodded. "Then you're her only hope."

Fenton was led to the clinic where he made a beeline for Agafya's bed. A few nurses stood around the woman along with Fenton's parents. Sam sat on the ground, running a hand through her hair and panting.

She looked up when Fenton entered and sprang up. She gestured for him to hurry and he was by the ghost's bedside in seconds.

Agafya was in a terrible state. Fenton froze before looking away and towards his parents. They noticed his pale face and nodded encouragingly. Jack even smiled. His eyes telling him not to worry. He had this covered.

Fenton took a deep breath and focused on Agafya. He went over her molecules and was surprised to feel the utter state of panic in her body. It was a warzone. A molecule battle. The ectoplasm was struggling to stay together before they were forced to crumble and fall apart.

They young boy immediately thrust himself in to give the immune system a fighting chance. He hardened the cells and tried to keep them together before giving up on that. He had to change the matter before the sickness destroyed it.

Fenton went to the very center. To the matter around the core. He had been practicing a lot and was now able to change large pieces of matter. He swiftly rearranged the molecules around the core, turning them green. He smiled briefly. It's working!

He spread out and changed the other molecules. He send a current of power to the green molecules and reinforced them.

That was his mistake.

The Eduqa went crazy. The moment one of the freshly healed and powered cells was reinfected, it became stronger. It infected the molecule next to it and no matter how much Fenton tried, it spread like wildfire.

He hadn't gotten rid of the Eduqa.

He'd made it stronger.

The boy grit his teeth and shook as he gripped Agafya's bedside.

In his panic, he pushed more power in and tried to gain more ground.

However, it was useless. The Eduqa was gaining and bearing down on the core rapidly. He wasn't going to make it. He fought and held the enemy back with all he had. He wasn't going to let her die. Not Agafya. He was going to save her. She would heal and smile at him like before. She would laugh and call him 'Daisuke'. He wouldn't let her down.

Fenton forced the infection back. It was getting to close to the core.

Suddenly, everything exploded.

Fenton gasped and his eyes snapped open. He stared at the body in front of him.

Agafya's arms and legs had disappeared and her she had shrunk considerably. Her eyes were open and her mouth was open mid scream. It hadn't been like that before. The worst thing was the burning hole in her chest. Where the core should have been.

Then Fenton realized it wasn't smoke rising from the hole. It was the remains of his friend's core. The whisps rose into the air and swirled. Fenton imagined it waving goodbye. Before dispersing and leaving him...forever.

Fenton looked on helplessly as she, the woman who had loved him and done so much for him, went from yellow to a muddy brown.

He looked up to see his mother panting, a smoking gun in her hands. She trembled as she lowered the gun and it clattered on the ground. She connected her eyes with her son's. Both too devastated to say anything.

A nurse approached and covered Agafya with a blanket. She was crying and let her hand rest on the blanket.

Fenton took a step backward. Then another. He turned and ran.

He passed Sam, who had tears running from her eyes. He didn't dare look at her. He had failed.

Nobody stopped him as he sprinted out the door.

Fenton lay curled up on the ground, sobbing quietly. He knew he should go back. Maybe work on perfecting the cure so the same thing didn't happen again. But he was too deep in his sorrow to bother.

Something touched his head and he yerked. He looked up to see his mom standing there, worry etched in her expression.

She had gone looking for her boy and finally found him behind one of the buildings at the edge of the island. Curled up and shaking. Maddie sat down beside him and the boy sniffed, wiping his tears away.

They sat next to each other in silence for a few minutes as Fenton tried to calm himself down.

"I'm sorry." His voice cracked. Maddie looked at him in silence as he continued. "If you hadn't intervened, she would have died painfully. I was just making it worse-." He broke off and took a deep breath to keep from crying.

Maddie embraced him and patted his hair. "Shhhh. You were just doing your best. It wasn't your fault. It'll get better."

"No it won't!!!" He shouted and pushed away from his mom. "I just killed someone. Agafya counted on me. I ruined it. I-I just..."

His mom sighed. "You can't give up, Danny."

"But what if it goes wrong again. What if I just make it worse." He ran his hands through his hair, wishing he could just drown in his sorrow and get rid of the pain he was feeling.

His mom patted the ground and he scooted closer to her. She brushed his hair back and he could see her glassy eyes clearly. "I know how you feel, dear."

He frowned. "What do you mean."

She sighed deeply and dropped her hand. "A long time ago, I was working on something. It went wrong and one of my best friends lost his life. Well..." She paused. "Half of it."

Fenton blinked at her. "Vlad?"

She nodded. "He almost died. He was hospitalized for a few months. They wouldn't let us see him for fear of us catching whatever disease he had acquired. No one knew what it was and he was put in the most secluded part of the hospital. After a while he healed. At least...that's what the doctors said." She furrowed her eyebrows. "Looking back now, I think he probably used his ghost powers to let him go." She shook her head. "While he had been in the hospital, your dad and I married. We went to visit him when he was released but he had changed. He accused us of not caring about him and leaving him to die. When he heard of our marriage, it was the last straw. He cut off all bonds with us and build up his own life. The thing is, Danny, he blamed us for his disease...and he was right. We should have taken more precautions. We were just young adults messing around." She put a hand to her mouth and tears escaped her eyes. "We shouldn't have stuck our noses in ghosts' business. It would've been better for everyone."

Fenton was shocked. He had never heard his parents' side of the story and he was surprised to find so much remorse from his mom. He hugged her, reassuring her in turn. "You were just teens mom. You were just going after your dreams. You didn't cause the accident on purpose."

She broke out sobbing and embraced her son in a tight embrace. "I killed you, Danny!! It's my fault. I killed Vlad and then what do I do? I make another portal and it kills my son!! I'm so sorry. I'm so so so sorry."

She kept rambling and Fenton froze in shock. Tears pooled in his eyes and he let them fall down his face. He hugged back. Mother and son, wrapped in a tight embrace. Comforting each other.

Fenton buried his face in his mom's neck. "It's ok, mom." She cried harder. "It's ok. I'm ok. Vlad is just a crazy old fruitloop and he can't get over past grudges. He passed the blame to you guys when he was just as much to blame. As for me..." He paused and chuckled. "I was being stupid. It's not your fault I went in the portal and was being a curious idiot even though you guys had forbidden me to go. It's ok."

Maddie separated a bit. She held her son at arm's length and inspected his face with a small smile playing at her lips. "Oh Danny. How you've grown. I love you, you know that?"

The boy nodded and wiped his wet face with his palm. "I love you too."

Maddie's smile disappeared and she looked at him in the eyes. "And Agafya's death wasn't your fault either. You didn't bring the Edre- the Rueka-"

Fenton chuckled as his mom struggled. "Eduqa," he muttered wiping his eye.

His mom nodded, smiling again. "It wasn't your fault it was here. You're just doing your best to help."

Fenton sniffed and looked away. He could hear the ghosts moving about the clinic room. Somewhere away from the clinic something was being burned. He knew they were holding a ceremony for the faded ghosts.

I'll find a way, he promised Agafya, I'll save them. I promise.

Maddie stood up and held her hand out to him. She smiled. "Let's try again, shall we son?"

Fenton smiled back at her and took her hand. "We shall, mom."
