The story starts...

It was unusual for Dan Kouzo to get called into the meeting room. Very unusual indeed. The other who was in the room with him was much less unusual, the detective he was supposed to share an office with but rarely did because they could never stop bickering in each other's presence... And because Dan so rarely got assigned cases that he'd need to use an office.
It was nice of Philomena to assign him half of one anyway.

Dan smiled at the other detective's frown, having deduced exactly why he was so annoyed. After all, despite not getting many cases, Dan is good at what he does.

He smiled wider as the other boy let out a sigh, it was finally happening! At last Magnus spoke, "I had to give up the Phantom Thief case." He stated, clearly irritated. Dan didn't need to use his detective skills to know the sources of Magnus's irritation were: One, not being able to solve the case and two, having to pass the case on to Dan. The second of which was the source of Dan's joy.
"I gave it up because I was getting almost nowhere with my investigations." Magnus explained, focused entirely on the corner of a sheet of paper that he was fiddling with to avoid looking at Dan, "I thought I'd pass it onto you because if I could hardly figure anything out... Given how different our investigation methods are, you should hopefully have a much easier time."

Dan laughed, resisting the urge to cheer at getting a case, "Obviously, because I'm the anti-you." He joked, prompting a fond eye roll from the other detective.
Aside from being co-workers, the pair had known each other for years. They'd always kept up a rivalry but a friendship had grown between them too. Although, even with all of their combined detective skills they couldn't figure out when that had happened.

"Yeah, I said as much to Philomena." Magnus replied, causing Dan to snort with laughter.

"Seriously?" He giggled, then stopped remembering the original source of his happiness, "Okay, okay, so I'm finally getting a case, it's not everyday that happens!" He grinned.

His dark haired coworker gave him a look, "Yeah and you have me and the four others who quit the case to thank for it." He sighed, "But still, congratulations anyway? It really isn't everyday you're trusted with a big case."

Dan hung his head slightly, pushing back his brown hair with the red stripe that ran through it with one hand so that it didn't fall in his face. He frowned at the desk, "To be fair that's really not my fault. I am a good detective, they just rarely trust me with anything other than missing animal cases!" He complained, only half serious. He truthfully didn't mind the missing animal cases, seeing owner and pet reunited always puts a smile on his face but it's always nice when he gets a more... Serious case, one that involves actual detective skills.
"Anyway!" He looked back up and smiled, "I'm being trusted with one now, aren't I? So... Fill me in! Give me all the details about this Phantom Thief case."

The detective's blue eyes shone with excitement as Magnus pushed the stack papers he'd been fiddling with on the table over to him. As Dan scanned through them, the other detective began to talk. "There's not much information as he's usually pretty careful." Magnus explained, "The most information we know about the thief himself is that for a Phantom Thief as good as he is, he's quite young."

"Like how we're both quite young for detectives as good as we are?" Dan questioned, tilting his head.

Then watched red eyes roll as Magnus nodded, "Yeah, something like that." He replied amusedly. "He's also extremely good at getting away from us detectives and the police. Even when we had him surrounded from all angles, he still got away." The dark haired boy continued, "As for how he works, he always does the same thing each time, he'll leave a card in a very obvious place and exact week before the crime. Stating exactly what he'll steal along with which day and the time for which he'll steal it, which is only ever off by a minute or two. His methods of stealing the item vary but one consistent is that no one's ever gotten hurt whilst trying to stop him."

Dan grinned, "That's not entirely true, your pride definitely got hurt."

"If this wasn't a professional environment I'd slap you for that comment."

"I'm surprised that's stopping you for once, it hasn't stopped you before."

Annoyed scarlet met teasing blue.
Magnus sighed, his irritation clear in his expression, Dan took that as a sign he should stop poking fun at his colleague before his usual disregard for the no violence policy returned.

"Anyway!" He sang, "Is there anything else about him?" The brunette asked, nodding towards the pile of papers on the desk.

The older of the pair shook his head,"Not much. We have no idea of his goal or his real identity as he always wears a mask. The information on the papers is mostly just information on the crimes he's committed and the people he's stolen from."

Dan blinked. All of those papers were just about this guy's thefts? He wasn't sure if he was impressed or annoyed that the Phantom Thief had gotten away with all that. It was probably a mixture of both.
Either way, he wouldn't be getting away with it for much longer.

At least that was what Dan thought.

"There's also a box of the letters he leaves for people to warn them about the upcoming thefts in m- our office." Magnus corrected swiftly. Ignoring the amused look Dan shot him. "I didn't feel like carrying them here since they're already in the place they need to be. It's on my desk, I can trust you to get it yourself, but if I find my desktop home screen has been changed to hot dog again, I will kill you."

"Noted." The blue eyed boy nodded, resisting the urge to make a joke about how Magnus should be catching killers, not threatening to kill his colleagues.

"There's also one that arrived yesterday." The older added, "So there'll be a theft next Wednesday, but that's your problem to deal with now Dan." Magnus smirked slightly.

Dan laughed, "You've got a new case already?"

Magnus shook his head slowly, "I'm going to get one after this. Philomena said there was one that was extremely 'up my alley' so that should be interesting."

The younger of the two detectives stood up, "Well then, what are you waiting for? If there's nothing more to share about this case, go get your new one!" He cheered, picking up the stack of papers. "I can start making my way through these and the box of cards."

He began to head towards the door, "Oh and by the way, thanks for passing the case onto me. I guarantee you I'll catch this Phantom Thief faster than you ever could." Dan winked before leaving, ignoring the way he saw Magnus roll his eyes at the comment in the reflection of the door.

After weaving through the corridors, he shoved open the door to his and Magnus's office with his shoulder. Dumping the pile of paper down on his empty desk, grabbing the box from Magnus's desk and then taking a seat. He began to read the top paper on the pile.

There was a helpful note at the top left by one of the detectives who'd previously been on this case.

This is a record of all the information about the first known heist of the Phantom Thief known as Phantom Thief Gold.

A smile crept onto Dan's lips. "Phantom Thief Gold..." He whispered, then he spoke louder and more confidently, "I'll be the one to solve this case."
