What Can Be
Harumi's POV-
My footsteps echoed through the dark, frigid prison. The guard in front of me, in the hour we had been walking through this labyrinth, had not said a word to me, he had not even met my eyes we found ourselves face-to-face.
I rearranged my shawl to further cover my face. Though I was again wearing heavy makeup, and a scarf around my neck, the constant qualm of my secrets getting out consistently plagued me.
I let my eyes wander around the hall. It struck me that this was the very facility where the inmates of the Hreatji Droid Purge were kept, and it surely showed. Claw marks defaced the walls, metal limbs and wires lay strewn on the floor, fluids formed repugnant, luminescent pools in the ground.
The lights flickered as we moved along. As I walked, avoiding the puddles of liquid, my eye caught a dimly lit cell. Unlike the rest of the empty barracks, this one had a singular light, flashing on and off.
My heart briefly stopped when I saw what was inside.
The body of a droid lay on a operating table, his jacket torn open. His chest panel was opened, and the machinery inside ripped apart. His hand was gripping something tightly, his hand in a fist around it. What truely disturbed me was the expression of pure terror on his face, his blank eyes staring into nothing.
I quickly jerked my head away from the gruesome sight, clutching my shawl closer to my heart. I looked up at the unfazed guard in front of me.
I decided to fix my gaze on him, instead of the hallway.
We continue for a few more feet through the cold hallway before reaching a large metal door. The door was sleek dark gray and simple, it's complicated mechanisms hidden inside. It wasn't like the rusted, old gate that led to the Phantom Elite mecha bay, or even like the moss covered door that held the way inside the internment camps. This was much colder, much more frightening. It set my heart on edge.
With the digital blips of a electronic keypad and the soft groaning of heavy metal moving, the door opened.
On the other side of the door, I could see him- Kirv, sitting at a table. The artificial light emitting from the luminous ceiling and floor around him was nearly blinding.
"Come on." Said the guard, his voice gruff and harsh.
I stepped through the door. my eyes slowly adjusting to the light. The room was only slightly warmer. I brushed a hair out of my face. "I am ready to see him."
The guard nodded, then tapped the glass walls surrounding Kirv. A control panel opened, and the guard opened a door.
The sound of the door being opened was a high metallic screeching, and a black liquid seemed to ooze from the cracks.
After taking a breath in, I walked through, the door shutting behind me.
I took my seat in front of Kirv. The Apithian, in response to hearing me arrive, looked up, his eyes a cold, empty blue.
Kirv looked paper than before, the color drained from his face. His Apithian markings, unlike before, were dim and dull, matching the gray aesthetic of the prison.
"Senator .. Kogo." He smiled. "I'm glad you came."
I nodded. "I'll get you out of here soon, I promise." I said under my breath. "Kirv, can I ask you what happened?"
Kirv sighed . "I was going home, like normal, when the guards showed up at my dwelling when the guards showed up. Senator, please. They know about the konesheti. They know."
I bit my lip. "Kirv, May I ask... what exactly are the konesheti?"
Kirv bowed his head. "We are freedom fighters, seeking peace. The vankor..."
I nodded. "Are extremists who dishonor our name."
Kirv looked up at me. "Our? What do you mean?"
I removed my shawl, exposing my face. Slowly, I wiped off the power that concealed my Apithian markings. "I am like you."
Kirv nodded, but it was clear to the eye he was stunned. "You're... an Apithian.... it all makes sense now...."
"Please, be quite." I warned, glancing around. The guard was not watching us, but I did not feel safe.
Kirv nodded. "Does anyone know?" I shook my head. "No one but my handmaiden, and I trust Jitaku with my life."
"Jita... that's an Apithian name."
"She's also one of us."
After silence, I spoke up. "I would like to become a member of the Konesheti."
Kirv nodded. "I can't make you a member, but if you go to sector 603903, barrack 9658 room 7537, you'll find them."
I nodded, redoing my shawl to cover my markings. "Thank you, Kirv."
Kirv sighed as I walked out. "What's your first name?"
I paused as I was walking out. "My name is Harumi."
