Danny entered through the doors of Casper High. As he passed among the students, they made room for him. He passed by a certain student in a hoodie, leaned against the lockers with his nose in his phone. Danny haulted with a frown and turned to the boy. He crouched until he reached the boy's height and patted on his shoulder.
"Hey, buddy, 'think you can follow me to the class? I won't be long, just five minutes, okay?" The boy didn't utter a word but he nodded. He turned off his phone and shoved his hands in his hoodie and followed Danny.
Danny whiped the keys out from his pocket, rotating them on his finger before he picked the right key. When he stood in front of a door, he turned the key in its keyhole and the door faltered, revealing a dark classroom. Danny flipped on the light switch and the lights flickered awake. He turned on the fan. He got a chair and turned it to face his desk. Danny sat on the teacher's desk and opened a drawer.
The drawer was filled with snacks. Danny frowned in thought as he stared at the snacks. "Aye, Jamie, Doritos or Lay's?" Jamie remained quiet. Danny was about to speak up when Jamie replied with "Lays". Danny smiled.
"That's my boy! I also like 'Lay's' more." Danny said. "Fetch." He threw the bag and he caught it expertly. Danny took a glance at his watch.
"You should have about ten minutes before the first class." Danny said, "So, I wanted to say that you got a 'B' on your essay! I had to be just a tiny bit generous this time, you actually wrote words so I was able to give you a good grade this time." Jamie cracked a weak smile.
"Thanks, Mister Fenton."
"Don't sweat it, buddy. Think you can talk about what was making you fall behind all this time?" Jamie's smile fell, and his eyes met the dirty classwork ground in sadness and pain. "Hey, hey, that's alright, that's alright. It is okay not to talk." The sight of the poor boy reminded him of painful deja vu. Suddenly, the boy's brown hair turned into jet black hair and his grey eyes into a sad blue.
Danny spoke again, "I was in your place, and I had a secret that I could never tell anybody, ever, and it was the biggest burden anybody could ever bear to hold. I wouldn't sleep.. couldn't eat, fell behind my classmates and no matter how many times my friends had offered to help me with my classes, something –regarding that secret– would happen and I would fail my classes, and my teachers didn't grant me any advantages, simply left me to fail until I was told I had to fall a grade behind." Jamie's eyes widened.
"What did you do then?" Jamie asked. Danny smiled at his student's curiosity. The boy opened up the bag of chips and started to munch on them as Danny continued the story.
"You know Lancer? The principle?" Jamie nodded, eating more of the chips. Daniel leaned in and whispered from behind the back of his hand, facing Jamie. "He was my teacher when I was your age." Jamie chuckled.
"For real?"
"Yep." He popped the 'P'.
"He looks like a very boring teacher to have."
"You have no idea." Danny laughed, "I always slept through his classes, or missed them entirely. I would always wake up and hear him exclaim 'To Kill A Mocking Bird'!" Jamie chuckled and Danny joined him joyfully. "Well, for the most part, I hated Lancer. He would always be the one to lecture me the most or fail my classes.. until he gave me a second chance. He gave me a week to raise up my grade so I don't have to fall back a grade. Then, I actually shared my secret with him."
"Were you doing drugs?" Jamie asked. Danny gasped dramatically.
"I would never! What gives you that image of me, Jamie, you know what? You have saturday detention."
"What?" Jamie exclaimed, some chips shoved in his mouth. "What happened to second chances?"
"Relax, buddy, I am just joshing you." Daniel said, only to recoil in horror, "God, I sound like Vlad."
"Who's Vlad—"
"Doesn't matter," Danny said rather quickly, "Anyway, Lancer was very understanding and actually very guilty. My friends helped me with said secret and he offered to tutor me personally and I actually got an 'A' in all of the papers, exams and assignments I had."
"Wow, so you are a smart."
"Yeah. It is frustrating to remember when my Maths Teacher called me retarded." Danny said with a huff, "Anyway, what I am trying to say out of all of this is that.. I might never know how you feel.. or what you experience on a daily basis.. or where you are up there–" He pointed at his head, "–But I am willing to help you regardless of so. Would you be interested in meeting up after school to help you with Physics?" Jamie nodded.
"Thanks, sir."
"Now, off you go."
"But I have your class first thing in the morning."
"Do you? Oh, right. What idiot decided to make half-sleepy Tenth Graders learn Physics at eight a.m. in the morning? Ugh." Danny said, dramatically. Jamie enjoyed how much Danny empathised with his students. "Well, you can get out and enjoy those three minutes. I don't want others to think we've been talking about my personal life, hmm?"
"Sure. Have a good day." Jamie got out of the classroom but he didn't close the door.
"Jamie! You forgot to close the door!" He yelled.
"That's alright, Daniel, I am the one who opened it." Mister Lancer entered and closed the door behind him. "That's Jamie, the boy you told me about?" He asked, pointing behind him with his thumb.
"Aha, he got a 'B' on his essay yesterday."
"So, I have heard. Well, certainly what I have done to you when you were his age has gone round and round." Mr Lancer sat down in front of his previous student. Danny noticed that who once had been his teacher had grown quite a few white hairs. His wrinkles have intensified, his proud blue eyes older and wiser.
Danny himself had grown older, but he hadn't changed one bit. Except perhaps he had grown stronger and his hair was slightly shorter, like he had had a haircut not so long ago.
"I am proud of you, Daniel. I will talk with the school board to negotiate giving you a raise." Danny smiled.
"Thanks, Lancer." Danny said.
"Say hello to the lil' bambino, hmm?"
"You and Ellie got along so well the last time, huh?"
"Indeed, we did, I wish she would be my student, too, but I doubt I would remain that long. Daniel, I have become an old man, retirement is just around the corner."
"This school will never ever be the same without you, Lancer." Danny sighed.
"Well, I will leave you to it." Lancer stood up, "Ow! My back!" Danny shook his head with a soft smile.
"Aye, Lancer, please, drop the 'how to be hip' book, alright? It is so 2000s, nobody speaks like that anymore."
"You have never changed." Lancer said. Then suddenly, they heard a scream. Danny hopped up and bolted out of the door, running. He found Jamie and a girl named Amanda both on the ground. Amanda was hurt, her forearm sliced and bleeding. Jamie had a scratch in his face. Jamie was crying while Amanda was in shock, breathing heavily.
"What happened?"
"A ghost with a knife happened!" A third girl yelled, pointing at the glowing end of the corridor. Danny's eyes gleamed a threatening shade of green when he saw Skulker at the end of the corridor. Two rings appeared on his waist.
"Daniel! You can't—" Danny changed into Phantom. In a flash, he was in the hair with his legs in a long tail and he punched Skulker so hard he broke the door of the school and they both tumbled in the front yard. Danny planted his legs in the soil in an epic fighting stance, while Skulker got up with difficulty, Danny's punch making a crater in his iron suit's torso.
"Whelp's gotten stronger, aye." Danny stood tall. His white hair was longer and he was like a tall pillar. He had multiple new adjustments in his suit with a tiny 'fenton' logo on them. He had a belt with the fenton thermos, but a black one clipped to it. His suit had a new design that included the same color of his neon eyes.
"You just made a big mistake, Skulker." Phantom said in a sound so threatening the grass almost shook in fear, "I can't believe you were stupid enough to hurt my students. You. Will. Pay." Danny saw green and red. He fought Skulker until his suit peeled off revealing the small green blob he really was. Danny placed him in the fenton thermos. Immediately, the ear piece in his ear beeped. He pressed on it and Sam's voice appeared.
"Danny! What have you done?" She screamed, "Everybody now knows your secret!"
"Nobody threatens the safety of my students."
