Chapter 23 Alternate ending
She dies in this one so be warned this one is sad!
It had been months since Andy's outburst and there were no signs of her getting better. Bruce was in her room daily, checking if she was making progress and checking if the machines were working correctly.
Clint was in her room everyday, talking to her and making sure she knew that he missed her and that he would be right there when she woke up.
The team knew Clint was struggling to come to terms of the fact that she might not wake up, even though Bruce kept telling Clint that it was a possibility, especially since she wasn't making any progress.
"Clint, we're getting to the point where we need to talk about taking her off life support." Bruce explained as Clint walked into the room.
Clint ignored what he said for a moment as he sat down next to Andy. "Is that what's best for her?" He asked, gently taking Andy's hand in his.
"If she doesn't show any signs of progress in the next week, yes." Bruce said and looked at both of them. "I'm sorry Clint." He added.
Clint shook his head and looked down. "If that's what we need to do then we need to do it. She's been out for 5 months, it's okay." Clint whispered and wiped a tear from his cheek.
"I'll leave you be now." Bruce said before walking out of the room.
Clint didn't talk for what felt like hours but was only a few minutes. "I know this is selfish but I'm not ready to let you go." He finally whispered as tears fell freely down his cheeks. "We're finally free of the things that kept us apart, and you're struggling to stay alive. I'm so sorry we didn't come sooner." Clint whispered before wiping his cheeks.
Natasha walked in slowly, knowing the choice he has to make. "Clint?" She asked softly causing him to jump and turn around.
"Oh." Clint said and turned back to Andy. "Hey Natasha." He said as he gently took Andy's hand in his again.
"Bruce told me. I'm so sorry." Natasha said as she walked over to them. "But we need to think about her. If this is what's best, you need to let go." She said and Clint rolled his eyes.
"Yes Nat, I am, very aware of that fact. I know that I have to let her go." Clint snapped and Natasha just stood there looking at Andy.
"We're all going to miss her you know. I know you love her, and I know this is going to be hard but you have to do this. I love her too, in a very different way but I love her. She's like a sister to me, so I'm going to be struggling to let go of her too, but we're not going to be alone. We can get through this together." Natasha said and this time Clint didn't answer.
"I don't know what I'll do without her." Clint whispered, finally breaking the silence. "We've been through so much and I just thought we would finally be happy." He added and looked over at Andy.
"I know Clint, I'm so sorry." Natasha said before Clint stood up and almost tackles Natasha in a hug. Natasha wraps her arms around her best friend and holds tight.
The two of them stand there for minutes before Bruce walked back in. Natasha smiled gently and pulled away.
"Hey Bruce, is there any change?" Natasha asked and Bruce looked over at them with a sad look on his face.
"She's stable and her heartbeat hasn't changed, but she won't be able to breathe without the tube. I'm sorry." Bruce asked and Clint nodded a little, sinking into the chair he had been previously sitting in.
"So she has till the end of the week to make it?" Clint asked, running a hand through his hair.
Bruce was silent, but they all knew the answer. "I don't even know if it's going to be the end of the week. I think the sooner we say goodbye, the sooner we can move on." Bruce whispered.
The news hung in the air as Clint and Natasha understood what had to happen. They were have to say goodbye very soon.
"I already told the rest of the team...do you want me to send them in so they can say goodbye so you can say goodbye after them." Bruce explained with tears in his eyes and Clint nodded gently.
The rest of the team slowly came into the room, not sure what to say.
"We're sorry, we tried to save her but we were just a little bit too late." Steve spoke up and Bucky stepped forward and smiled gently at Natasha and Clint.
"I um, I'm so sorry for not being able to save her, I was close to her but I can't imagine what you're feeling. It's hard to imagine the team without her. I just wish I could help in some way but I know there's nothing anyone can do now. So rest peacefully Andy, I'm going to miss you." Bucky said, gently squeezing Andy's hand gently.
"We didn't get along but she was almost as sarcastic as me at times. She made a great addition to the team and I can't believe she's not going to make it. I thought she was going to out live me at least...I'm sorry Andy, for everything." Tony said.
The room was silent once more, the rest of the team saying their goodbyes in their head or softly to themselves. Most of them didn't know what to do. They had lost her once before but this one was for real.
Bruce was the last to say their goodbye before the group left, leaving Natasha and Clint alone.
"When you came and found me I didn't know what was going to happen, and it was an adventure. Even though it wasn't that easy I'm glad you found me. Together we killed the one that was responsible for our torture and I am so proud of us for that. Even though I really hoped you would make it, you passed away after you accomplished your goal. I'll see you soon, but hopefully not too soon." Natasha whispered to Andy before bending down and kissing Andy's head softly and walking out of the room.
Clint was silent for awhile, mostly because he didn't know what to say. He had said goodbye before and he didn't want to say it again, but he knew he had to let go.
"I um, when you first got here you kind of annoyed me. Little did I know I was going to fall in love with you. I'm sorry for the pain that I caused you. I am so happy we were able to meet and enjoy our time together, at least sometimes. I'm sorry I didn't get to you in time. If we were just a few hours earlier maybe I wouldn't be having to say goodbye." Clint paused, a lump in his throat rising. He looked down as he allowed himself to cry. "I'm going to miss you. I love you Andy." He finished before standing up and looking down at her.
Clint paused and kissed her forehead gently before walking out of the room.
Bruce walked back into the room and slowly started to begin the process of pulling the tube out of her throat.
"Goodbye Andy." Bruce said as he pulled the tube out and her heartbeat slowly begins to slow down.
Clint was outside the room, looking in through the window and when her heartbeat slowed to the flatline, he felt his heart break.
Spectra, the ghost, was dead.
