Family Circus

I was pulled by my arm though the back of the circus. Dodging random objects scattered on the floor; from cans to cheap children's prizes. I saw the small black trailer. Something in the pit of my stomach told me that was the Ring Master's. Zoe kept her eyes forward. The grip on my arm was getting tighter, and our pase sped up.

She opened the door and I was hit with the sent of a million roses burning my nose. The furniture was gothic, but too goddy for my taste. Zoe let go and faced me after closing the door. To my surprise she didn't look mad. She looked at me like I told her the biggest lie. Eyes narrowed, she was skeptical.

"This is the Ring Master's trailer. She's out auditioning, and she won't be back till morning. So that's how long you have," she said crossing her arms. "Till what," I asked confused. "Till she sends Daniel to kill you," she said and I swear for a split second my heart stopped. I tried to say something but the words retreated back into my throat. After a moment of silence, Zoe looked me over and sighed. "You don't look like you're here to hurt our family. Honestly you're a little plain," she frowned. "I'm sorry," I finally replied. "If you even looked dangerous I would have killed you on the spot. So tell me what's your deal. Why are you snooping around," she glared.

"I'm not sure. When I was younger I was in an accident. I was bedridden for years. Honestly I never expected to leave the hospital, but every night I've heard this melody. I saw the Circus come into town from my window. That's when the music started. I felt like I finally had a purpose. Like finding the source of that song was the reason I'm still alive," I tried to explain. "Why don't you go back home. You're not worth much to anyone if you're dead," she gave me a bored look. "I'm not worth much alive either," I smiled.

"You expect my pity. I've been through hell. We all have. We're the outcasts, the lost. You've met Daniel, you found the source of the sound. You can put this 'mission' to rest now," she snapped. "Why are you here," I asked. "This is my family and this is my home," she snapped. "I know I just think we have the same reason for coming here. To find a song, to find acceptance. It's the same thing. I'm sure you know what it's like to feel empty..."

With the sound of footsteps I saw her eyes widened. She pushed me back, causing me to trip and land in the trunk. She locked it and I heard her sit on top of it. I heard the door open and the sound of high heels echoed into the room.
