"See you next class!" I shouted to my friend. She waved and I fumbled through the things in my locker.
"Excuse me?" I heard a voice squeak, and then a tap to my shoulder followed. I turned to see a boy with messy ash hair and big ocean eyes. He was shorter than me, with a blue jumper on and big glasses and his hands behind his back. I smiled at him.
"Yes?" I giggled. He's cute.
The boy removed his hands from his back to reveal notecards in his hand. I raised an eyebrow. His hands were shaking and he was tapping his foot anxiously.
He looked at his cards then looked back up at me. "Are you from T-Tennessee because y- ah!" He cut himself off as he dropped his cards. I giggled at him. He scurried to pick them up and I leaned down to help him, our hands brushing in the process.
He blushed furiously and hid his smile with a sweater paw, standing back up. "S-sorry, you're just really cute and- ugh. I messed this up, didn't I?" The stranger sighed. I chuckled, reaching out and moving a strand of fringe from his face, tucking it behind his ear.
"No. Not at all."
His cheeks reddened. "I don't have a card for that," he replied sheepishly. I grinned.
"You don't need one. I'm Dan by the way," I shook his shaking hand. He relaxed at my touch, smiling a little.
"Phil," he responded.
"Nice name."
"Nice face- oh! I-I'm sorry! Shit- I'm so embarrassing, I didn't mean to say that out loud!" Phil stuttered. I laughed.
"You're adorable," I told him. He blushed again, his lips forming in a tight line to attempt hiding his smile. "So, Phil, wanna walk with me to next class?"
His mouth formed in a small 'o' and his eyes twinkled. "Sure!" He yipped excitedly.
And so he did. We walked to class and I gave him my number, then class was over for the day.
He texted me that day to say hi, and we ended up chatting for hours.
For weeks it went on, we'd text, walk to classes together, and we even started eating lunch together. He was becoming more relaxed. He didn't stutter as much or apologize for mindless things. He was at ease with me now, and I was with him.
"Phil," I began. Currently him and I were eating outside on the bench, the autumn air nice and the birds chirping sweetly as the other teenagers chatted or read. Phil looked at me.
"Hm?" He responded, taking a sip of his drink.
"How come you were so nervous when you first came up to me?"
He stiffened, swallowing harshly. "I- well um. You just. . . You're popular. And I don't mean you're like the cliche kind of popular where everybody fears you and listens to you, I mean you have a lot of people who just genuinely like to talk to you and you're nice. A lot nicer than you'd expect people to be in college. And you're also really good-looking, so I doubted I'd have chance with you."
I frowned. "Phil, you're extremely attractive too. But that doesn't even matter. Looks don't matter to me, it's personality that does. And you've got that too. You're funny, sweet, brave, nice, and generous. You put people before you. You get flustered easily and it's adorable, and you're a nerd when it comes to books but I love that about you. You're passionate about the things you like,"
"I'm passionate about you," he murmured. My eyes widened and I was about to reply when a ball was thrown straight at Phil's head, knocking him off the bench and spilling his coke all over himself. He squeaked as his body hit the floor and I shot up, looking around for who did it.
A girl came running, looking worried. "I'm so sorry! I have a tournament this weekend so I've been practicing nonstop and haven't gotten much sleep. I swear I didn't mean to hit him! I'll get him a new soda-"
"It's fine, but a soda for him would be nice. Thanks."
She nodded and hurried off while I kneeled down next to Phil who was sitting there, his eyes squeezed shut in pain.
"Ouch."
I grinned, kissing his forehead. "Better?"
He opened his eyes and his face flushed red. "Yes."
I helped him up and he staggered into me. I sat him down and got an ice pack, holding it to his head.
"My shirt's all wet," he sighed.
"I'll lend you a t-shirt. My dorm is closer. Sound good?"
He nodded and the girl came back with a brand new soda, handing it to Phil and apologizing. Phil told her it was fine and asked her name.
"Alexis. But you can call me Lexi," she smiled warmly, shaking his hand. We said goodbye after finishing our food and I walked him to my dorm, handing him a plain grey shirt.
"Thank you. For everything," Phil said. I smiled at him.
"My pleasure."
After that day we talked even more, and I started to have feelings for him. I got butterflies when we touched and my heartbeat sped up when we hung out. When Christmas break came I went back home.
My parents told me we were going to Disneyland for my little sister, and said I could take a friend. Of course, I chose Phil. He stayed with us at the hotel and we went to Disneyland together, riding all the rides and sharing cotton candy.
We chased each other in the go-karts and screamed on the rollercoasters, and when we got to a slow romantic ride, the mood had changed.
Music was playing while robot Disney characters danced, and suddenly I felt Phil's hand on mine. Luckily it was just us as my sister wanted more food, so we had alone time.
I intertwined our fingers and Phil stared at me. I looked at him. "What?"
"Can I kiss you?" He whispered.
I looked at his lips then his eyes, and simply nodded, at loss for words. He put his free hand on my jawline and mine met his shoulder, and our lips met.
Then there was a flash. The automatic camera had taken a picture of us kissing. We pulled away and I leaned my forehead on his. "I think I'm in love with you."
I pecked his lips before replying, "I think I'm in love with you too."
After the ride was over we checked the photos and bought the one of us sharing a kiss, smiling about it and putting it in our pockets.
Once day was replaced by night and my sister was tired, we drove back to the hotel, the whole family, including Phil, wearing Mickey Mouse ears and full from food.
Phil and I went to our room since they couldn't book us a big enough room. As we were cuddling, I turned to face him. "Did you like Disneyland?"
He nodded. "Loved it. But most people would say Disneyland is the happiest place on earth. But that's not true, it's the second best."
"What's the first?"
"Your arms."
And that's when I knew I was in love with him.
A few days after that Phil decided to ask me out. I said yes, of course.
Time flew and suddenly we'd been together for three years and now had a house together and a cat named Dil.
Phil looked at the cat. "Dan," he said as we were cuddling on the couch while watching TV.
"Yeah?"
"If I were a cat, I'd spend all nine lives with you."
I smiled, kissing the top of his head. "You and your pickup lines."
He giggled.
That night I asked him on a date. I booked reservations at a fancy restaurant and ordered tickets to a drive-in movie, which was Avatar in 3D.
He came out in a tuxedo and I smiled at him, kissing him softly. "Are you a parking ticket? 'Cause you've got fine written all over you."
Then we burst out laughing and pat Dil on the head before heading to dinner. We talked, ate, then shared cake, then we left to the drive-in movie. I could tell Phil was wondering why this was all so fancy and planned out, but he'd find out soon.
I parked our car and grabbed a blanket, both of us getting out. I set the blanket on the roof of the car and we climbed on. I handed him the 3D glasses and turned on the radio station.
After awhile the movie started. We shared popcorn while Phil leaned his head on my shoulder and I kept my free arm around him. He was falling asleep on me.
"Don't fall asleep, you noob."
He moaned sleepily. "Then keep me awake."
I rolled my eyes and perked his chin up with my finger, pressing my lips to his.
"It's funny kissing you in 3D," Phil laughed against my mouth. I smiled.
"Watching Avatar while kissing in 3D glasses. That's something to remember."
He smiled, and I kept my lips on his while I reached into my pocket and pulled out a box and notecards. I snuck it out and parted away from Phil, smiling at him. He raised an eyebrow but as soon he looked down his eyes watered. He put his hand to his mouth, grinning widely.
"Phil," I began. I looked down at the cards.
"Yes?" He sniffled.
"The day I met you, and you were being all shy and cute- it was adorable. I wanted nothing more than to get to know you better. And thank god, because I did. Because now I have you in my arms, we have a cat, a house of our own, and I have you. But I want more than that. I want a family," then I opened the box to reveal a ring. "I want a family with you, Phil."
Tears slipped from his eyes as he smiled, his hands still on his mouth. "I want a family too," he replied, his voice cracking at the end.
"I love you, baby. So so so much. And I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So, Phil, are you from Tennessee because will you marry me?"
He laughed, wiping his tears and nodding furiously. "Of course I will!" He cried. I grinned and slipped the ring on his finger, and he threw his arms around me. The people around us 'aww'ed and clapped, and I held him tightly.
"You and your pick up lines," Phil mocked.
I smiled against him, then pulled away, pecking his nose.
"I don't have a card for that."
And then we laughed until our stomachs hurt.
