midnight (fluff)
summary: phil has always lived in the same boring house and has nobody to talk to the whole summer, until one day a new family moves next door, seeing there's a boy his age.
I was laying on my bed contemplating my thoughts when I heard yelling from outside.
"Dan, come on! I need your help putting this painting up!"
I looked out my window, spotting a brown-haired boy running inside. He came back out and I watched as he helped his mother unpack boxes from the moving truck and placing them inside. He disappeared for awhile and I was about to lay back down until I saw him appear in the window across from me.
He was looking away from me, but I could see his face. He had big brown eyes, freckles, and curly chocolate hair. He was skinny and pale, but really it just made his features stand out more. Without warning he turned and I gasped, shooting back down and hiding under the windowpane.
"Shit," I cursed, hoping he didn't see me. After deciding I had hid long enough I slid back up, my cheeks heating over when I only stood back up to see the boy staring straight at me.
He walked to his window and opened it then pointed to mine, gesturing for me to do the same. I did, raising an eyebrow at him.
"Hi," he giggled. Fuck, even his voice was pretty.
"H-hi," I stuttered, mentally slapping myself. "You just moved in?"
The boy nodded. "I'm Dan."
"Phil," I grinned, reaching my arm out to shake his hand. My eyes widened, apologizing awkwardly when I realized he was a few feet away from me, too far to shake my hand. He just laughed. "S-so why'd you move here?"
He bit his lip, looking down. "I-"
"Daniel! A little help here?" His mother called from downstairs. He looked up at me sheepishly.
"I have to go," he turned and began walking out.
"Wait, Dan!" I called. He looked at me. "Can you see me tonight? Like, can you go on your roof or something?"
He only smiled, blushing as he walked out.
I dropped back down on my bed, smiling widely to myself.
I waited all day for him, rushing through my dinner in hopes of seeing Dan in his room.
I hurried up, my eyebrows furrowing when I noticed a paper plane on my windowpane. I skipped over, taking the paper and unfolding it.
meet on the roof at midnight
- dan xx
My heart pounded and tummy fluttered, my hands suddenly becoming clammy. I sat on my desk, checking the time.
23:47. (a/n: thats 11:47pm guyz)
I took the plane and wrote in it.
wouldn't miss it for the world.
- phil xxx
Should I erase that last x? Keep it? Phil, get it together, this isn't primary school.
I folded it back up and threw it, the paper flying straight through Dan's window and landing on his bed. I fist bumped then got ready, putting my phone to charge and making sure my bed was made. I checked the time again.
23:57pm. I exhaled, saying goodnight to my parents and then going into the attic.
I opened the top, climbing onto the roof. I shut the top door after me, crawling to my favorite spot.
I heard rustling and turned, watching as Dan climbed out onto his roof with a tank top and pajama shorts on.
"You got my note?" Dan asked, laying down on his roof and stargazing. I nodded.
"You got mine?"
He chuckled. "'Course. So how long have you lived here?"
"My whole life."
"Wow. Doesn't it get kinda boring?"
"Eh. My dad's job doesn't move us. What about your dad?"
Dan looked away from me. "I don't have a dad."
I sat up. "Fuck, I'm sorry- wait shit! Do you not like cussing? Ah, for God's sake-"
Dan chuckled lightly. "I'm okay with cussing. Besides, my dad died two years ago. Plane crash. That's why my mum and I drove here, she's hated planes ever since."
I gulped. "I'm sorry. I wish I could hug you right now."
"You could," Dan looked at me. I tilted my head. He nodded his head downwards and I noticed a ladder under his bedroom window, which his bedroom window led to the roof. "Come over, you doof."
I giggled, excusing myself. I ran past my parents' bedroom and out the door, climbing up the ladder and onto Dan's roof.
"Took you long enough," Dan teased.
I shoved him playfully. "You missed me."
Dan gave me a lopsided smile. I grinned back and we lay down next to each other, looking up at the stars and shouting out when we found a shape in the galaxy. "Before my dad passed, we would stargaze all the time. He told me that if he ever died, I would count the stars, and every star was another amount on how much he missed me. Which the galaxy is endless, meaning he'll miss me infinitely, just as I'll miss him."
"That's sweet," I murmured. Dan nodded and without warning he turned, resting his head on my chest. "Tell me the other things that make you feel at ease." (A/N: YO WILD REFERENCE)
Dan fiddled with the hem of my shirt, the only sounds that could be heard was our soft breathing, our quiet chatter, and the crickets chirping away. "I also like to write poetry. My favorite color is blue, my favorite animal is a fox-"
"Why a fox?" I asked.
"Because even if they are small, they're still strong," he told me and I nodded, gesturing for him to continue. "I also like coffee. I have it every morning. I like big sweaters and fuzzy socks, and I love music."
I nodded. "Well, my favorite color is red. My favorite animal is a lion, because even if they're big and aggressive, they still run away from their fears. I like smoothies and I like to watch a lot of movies. I like big t-shirts and no socks, and I like to draw."
Dan looked up at me, a toothy grin on his lips. "Well Phil, it appears we are complete opposites."
I smiled down at him. "You know what they say: opposites attract."
And we spent the rest of the night like that, talking and stargazing, until we had to go to sleep.
The next morning I woke up and saw Dan writing in his notebook, deep in thought with earphones in. I waved to catch his attention and he looked up at me, flashing me a peace sign and a small smile. I grinned at him and grabbed a notepad, getting a marker. I wrote down a sentence and held it up to him.
WHAT ARE YOU WRITING?
He giggled and tore out a page from his notebook, writing in it then holding it up to me.
POETRY, OF COURSE.
I chuckled and wrote again.
ABOUT WHOM?
He raised an eyebrow then held up his sheet.
IT'S A SECRET
I flipped him off playfully and he laughed, and then I went downstairs to eat breakfast. I quickly ate and my parents noticed my giddy mood.
"Why are you smiling so much?" Mum asked.
"The guy next door is cool, that's all."
Dad chuckled. "Dan, is it? He seems like a nice kid. You should invite him over sometime. Maybe this weekend for the game? I'll be making hamburgers and hot dogs."
I nodded excitedly. "I'll ask, thanks dad!" I sang, putting my dishes in the sink and running upstairs. I hurried to my window with a grin, but my grin faltered once I saw Dan's window was shut and the curtains were covering it. I furrowed my eyebrows, sitting down on my bed.
That's weird, I thought.
Hours had passed when I was watching TV and saw a light turn on in Dan's room. I sat up. The curtains separated, revealing a tired looking Dan in a panda onesie. I giggled.
He was holding a spiral.
MEET ON THE ROOF AT MIDNIGHT
I stood up, flashing him a thumbs-up. He gave me a lopsided smile, and then his curtains shut.
I grabbed a sweatshirt and threw on pajama pants, staring at the clock intensely.
11:58pm. Now's the time.
I walked out into the hallway and found the roof door, opening it and climbing out. I waited for Dan, and he arrived two minutes late.
"What took you so long?" I teased.
"I was getting something," he replied. I looked up at the stars. "For you."
I looked at him. "Oh really?"
He tossed it at me and I caught it, feeling soft fabric. I unwrapped it to find it was a panda onesie, just like his. I grinned.
"Now we can both be pandas."
"Does that mean I can call you bear?" I asked him. He blushed.
"Yes."
We both laid down on our roofs and remained silent as we looked up at the stars when I spoke up. "Hey, where were you earlier?"
"Family stuff," he responded, but it sounded like he was lying. I didn't push it.
"Hey, Dan?"
"Yeah?"
"Will you ever let me onto your roof?"
He let out a breath. "I don't know, Phil." But we both knew that it wasn't about roofs. It was about trust and secrets. "Will you let me onto yours?"
I looked over at him to see his eyes shut. "Yes, but not today. For now I want to keep my feet on the ground."
"Then should we met in the yard?"
Dan nodded and they parted, only to meet behind their fence in the grass. A gleam of light caught their gaze and Phil noticed it as a firefly, and soon they were all over the place as the two boys lay on the ground.
"I haven't hugged you yet, have I?"
He giggled. "No, you have not, Phil Lester."
"Well can I, Dan Howell?"
"You can," he smiled. And I reached my arms out, and he reached his out, and our bodies collided. I held him tightly, as if it were the first hug we were sharing after not seeing each other for awhile. It was like we instantly clicked- as if our bodies were designed to intertwine.
And after that moment, midnight became my favorite time of the day.
