First Date
First dates were always traumatising, to say the least. Well, only if you screw the date up completely. That was the thought cycle of Phil Lester as he put on his trousers and glanced at the mirror one last time before leaving his house to attend to one of his first dates with Daniel Howell.
Phil had no backstory with this certain person but was, however, a friend of a friend who had decided to set them both up together as they were "perfect for each other".
Phil knew that Dan was a very professional man and preferred more of a formal and tidy attitude and behaviour so it was really hard for Phil to choose firstly his attire, then how he was going to talk to Dan during the date. Phil had decided that he was going to sound more sophisticated than usual to definitely impress then ease in with the clumsiness and stupidity. Not that Phil was stupid. He was a quite a literate man with his master's degree in English but never actually took advantage of the degree and works at a local café instead. Phil was a regular young adult who was just interested in finding someone to keep him company in his mundane life. Dan may be Phil's only hope of ever actually dating anybody but of course, the date comes first and that must go extremely well for him otherwise the next few steps doesn't matter.
Phil swiftly grabbed his coat and headed out towards the door only for him to come back and snatch his keys from the side table and leave once again. Phil was excited about his date but very nervous as it was his first date so he didn't know what to expect nor did he have any sort of experience with dates and was heavily debating on whether he should inform the mysterious Daniel that was indeed Phil Lester's first ever date. Phil gathered from Dan's personality from the previous times he and met him, that he had experience with dates as he was constantly complaining about how horrendously his dates go which again led Phil to the thought of, he couldn't screw this up.
As Phil parked to the only visible parking spot available in the restaurant, he noticed through the window of the restaurant that Dan was already here and pondered how long he spent waiting for him.
Phil sped into the restaurant and took a deep breath before opening the door and Phil's gaze met Dan's.
Phil's nerves began to kick in.
Hard.
Before Phil could even greet Dan, he had left the restaurant and ran back into his car.
Phil kept thinking of how he ruined the date now definitely and how Dan is going to think Phil is a loser who flunked his first date even though Dan doesn't know it's Phil's first. Ever. Date. After Phil finished hyperventilating, he heard a few taps on his window and he let go of his knees to let them rest onto the car floor. Phil scrolled the window down only a tiny bit and was about to explain to Dan what was happening but no words left his mouth.
"You okay in there, buddy?" Dan questioned as he tried to open Phil's car door but it was locked so smiled at Phil whilst leaning against his car, expecting an answer from Phil but only received a head shake.
"What's wrong? Do you want to talk about it because I'm all ears." Dan spoke again with a smile.
"Just. Nervous." Where the only words that could escape Phil's mouth and even then they were almost inaudible whispers.
"Hey, don't be it'll be okay. I won't bite you or anything, promise. If it makes you feel any better I can tell you the time how I embarrassed myself during a date with some random chick in high school." Dan reasoned with Phil which he replied to with a quick nod.
"How about we go inside first because you're shivering so you must be cold and I'm getting slightly chilly too." Dan asked, hoping that it'd encourage Phil to go into the restaurant and it definitely did as Phil opened his door slowly and grabbed his coat from his seat and put it on Dan's shoulders to stop him from shivering so much.
"You're so thoughtful, Phil." Dan said as he linked his arm into Phil's and took him into the restaurant.
"Erm, Hey, I was just sat in here so do you mind if I-" Dan asked the lady at the front who questioned why they were here and any other questions regarding their reason why they were at the restaurant. The woman already knew that Dan was previously here so shoed the pair of them off before Dan said something more stupid.
Dan held out Phil's seat as Phil sat in it and contemplated on whether he should do the same but that'd be stupid considering Dan pulled Phil's chair out for him to sit on and stay sat on.
"June 2013." Dan said and Phil gave a puzzling look but finally seemed to understand what Dan meant.
"We both decided to have a picnic in the park since it was both romantic and it was a really sunny day which was surprising because we live in fricking England." Dan replied which made Phil chuckle slightly.
"May I take your order?" The waitress asked before Dan could continue his story about his embarrassing previous date in high school.
"I'll just have a salad, what about, Phil?" Dan asked with a smile.
"Erm, I'll just have a cheeseburger." Phil said very shyly and as quickly as he could.
"A what?" The waitress asked, unable to understand what Phil had just said.
"He said a cheeseburger and scrap my salad, I'll also have a cheeseburger because who am so trying to kid here." Dan said with such a confident flare which made the waitress understand that Dan was not to be messed with at all scurried into the back of the restaurant.
"We were both playing a game of tag and I was it so I chased her and I accidentally pushed her into a tree when I touched her and I thought that would be the worst part of the date but it got worse- Lester, are you laughing at me?" Dan asked amusingly, stopping mid sentence as he realised Phil was having a giggle to himself about Dan shoving a girl into a tree.
"Maybe. Maybe not. How did you even manage to shove her into a tree? Are you that strong that you just shoved her into a tree?" Phil asked laughing harder than before.
"Hey, shut up, it's not my fault she was tiny and so light. At the time I was crying to my mum about how I shoved a girl into a tree but now it's hilarious." Dan spoke and began laughing with Phil which caught the eyes of a few people but they were nice people who only smiled at them and went back to their own business.
"So right, anyways, shut up and let me carry on. So. Stop laughing, Lester or I'll shove you into a tree." Dan jokingly threatened Phil.
"I prefer to to the shoving." Phil said in a joking but was the first time he showed any sort of dominance and confidence towards Dan that day.
"Who knew little Lester was daddy Lester in disguise." Dan spoke snorting which made Phil laugh much harder than previously.
"Woah woah. Okay finish your story before something weird happens." Phil said as he tried to calm his laughter down.
But before Dan could carry on, their food had arrived and had been placed onto the table and they both immediately started digging in.
"So." Dan said whilst chomping into his burger and watched Phil devour his which was amusing and quite adorable too.
"After I had helped her get the branch out of her hair and splint out of her nose, we sat down and began to start eating. Mind you, we were only 15 so my mum had to supervise me but completely missed the part where I shoved my date into a tree as she was too busy talking to some strange lady with a dog so good job mum." Dan spoke as he took a break to take another bite out of his burger. And Phil ate and watched Dan intently as he wanted him to carry his story on.
"We were eating egg and mayo sandwiches which smelt really bad but tasted great by the way. I tried to grab the side of my sandwich and I told her to grab the other side with her mouth so we could Lady and the Tramp it but like she didn't know what she was doing so she let go of the sandwich and it landed on my crotch which looked really wrong." Dan said once again taking a quick break to eat his burger and take a sip of water before he continued again.
"And I was trying to clean myself up but a bee kind of sat on my leg but I didn't notice until it stung me and I slapped her in the face because I thought she pinched my leg and I told her she needs to control herself. That's not even the worst part. The worst part was the ride home and I tried to lean in for a kiss but my braces got stuck to her braces and we sat there for ages whilst her dad tried to separate it and then her dad gave me. The. Talk. After that day I never spoke to her ever again." Dan said concluding his story of his terrible high school date which made Phil laugh so loud he let out a huge burp in between it which made the pair of the laugh so much, their stomachs started aching.
After the laughter had died out Dan asked,
"Tell me about your worst date." But Phil didn't know how to answer it so he decided to come clean.
"Actually, Dan. This is my first date. If you didn't realise already from the lack of communication from my side and me hiding in my car, I'm extremely nervous and I'm just a mess at this point. I don't really know what to do because I've never had any sort of experience with dates in my life. So, I'm sorry." Phil spoke shyly and ducked his head in shame.
"Hey, don't worry about that and I'm hoping that the pair of us will go on plenty more dates so you don't have to worry about experience. It makes sense how you haven't said much but I'd love to get to know you more because you seem like an amazing person and you're quite adorable too." Dan said whilst holding a finger under Phil's chin.
"Come on, let's go get some ice cream." Dan said to Phil whilst giving Phil his coat back for him to put on whilst Dan put on his own. Phil let Dan into his car and they drove a nearby dessert shop or looked to see any ice cream trucks. Phil asked how long Dan waited for Phil and Dan mentioned he liked being early and he lived nearby the restaurant so walked there.
Whilst looking for the ice cream trucks or dessert shops, the pair of them began gossiping and talking and giggling so much and they shared their hobbies and their taste in music which were very similar and they shared a few common secrets and backstories and their childhood experiences.
It took them an hour to find a dessert shop and they parked in the parking spot and they were still gossiping and talking and laughing and finally after another hour of the two of them sat in the car, did they finally leave to get some ice cream.
They both purchased two vanilla ice creams with sprinkles and went back into the car and began eating them.
"Here." Dan said pointing his spoon towards Phil's mouth which he received.
"Here." Phil repeated and gave a spoonful to Dan and they went back and forth, feeding each other's ice cream until it was all gone.
Phil kindly offered to drop Dan home and Dan had took the offer and they both began talking again. When they arrived at Dan's house, Phil's car had ran out of petrol for him to go home.
"Stay with me for the night." Dan offered.
"I couldn't, Dan. I'd just be a burden to you." Phil tried to deny but after a few minutes of arguing, Phil finally said yes.
"Oh and one more thing." Dan said.
Dan leaned on quickly and gave Phil a quick kiss on the lips.
"Thanks for an amazing date." Dan said whilst letting Phil and signifying that the date was over but their connection was still happening.
Phil had his first glance at Dan's house and it was nothing to what he has expected it to be. Unlike Phil's house, it was very neat and tidy and all his suits were carefully placed in those zippy plastic things which made me wonder what Dan worked as.
"Make yourself at home, Phil." Dan said whilst resting an arm on Phil's shoulder.
"Hey Dan, what do you work as?" Phil asked, trying his hardest not to sound like a weird person.
"You might not believe me but I work as a lawyer. It doesn't sound interesting, I know." Dan replied hopefully satisfying Phil's question.
"What about you, Phil?" Dan asked.
"Well. It's kind of hard to explain well it's not really. I have a master's in English but I've never actually ever used it so I work at a local café instead to pay the bills and stuff. I'm not really interested in hunting for a big job or anything. Just something to help me pay the bills really and to pay for my food and stuff." Phil told Dan. Phil felt a little embarrassed that he didn't ever use his degree to his own advantage and compared the fact that Dan works as a fricking lawyer and Phil only works at a café.
"Aw, that's cute." Were the only words Dan could say before taking Phil into his living room.
"Wanna watch a movie? I've already got the second Lion King in." Dan offered whilst Phil sat down and nodded.
"You know, Dan, this is a great first date. I've never realised how much fun they can be actually. I've always been too scared to do something like that. I didn't think it was for me and I wouldn't have liked it. But then Chris being Chris was probably fed up of me being indoors constantly and tried to shoe me away." Phil joked.
"But honestly, thanks for a great first date, Dan. I feel silly saying that now." Phil said whilst his cheeks turned to a rose pink shade and Dan glanced at him with a smile whilst setting up the movie and sat down next to Phil.
"You're welcome. Like I said earlier, hopefully we get to go on more." Dan grinned at Phil and leaned a little closer.
By the middle of the film, Phil had already fell asleep on Dan's lap but didn't realise and Dan obviously didn't mind.
What a great first date for Phil.
A/N: okay yeah this was rushed sorry.
