Chapter 11: Work

(Dan's POV)
I work at a café, like the one I went to last night, I didn't like it but I wasn't going to get money from the government forever. All the money that I have earned from this job I save for the day the check stop coming.

I've had this job for almost 2 years now, how they let a 15-year-old work here I have no clue, but I'm thankful that they let me. They trust me.

The job itself is a bore. It's the same thing every time you come in, but I don't complain, but if the manager hears you say anything bad he will pass it on, you can be fired.

I'm not scared of him of course, either I have nothing to complain about. For me boredom is great. You can do anything unless it's during a job, but I love it here. No one talks to me and I don't have to talk to anyone. I make drinks and clean up the tables, I see no problem in that.

But when I got to work today almost no one was there.

"Hey Daniel, you know how to work the cash register, right?" My manager asked me as soon as I walked in.

I nodded and a smile grew on his face, "Great, that's your job for the day!"

He walked away before I could protest. I had a feeling today wasn't going to be that good.

I was right.

It was fine, nothing got messed up, I worked over my set time and I didn't leave all day. That was my plan anyway, I guess.

Then he walked in.

He looked tired and his black hair fell into his face. His blue eyes were showing many emotions, but I can tell he was sad.

He made his way to a booth and that's when I made my move.

I move from behind the counter and walked to his booth.

"Fancy seeing you here," I say, causing him to jump. His eyes lit up once he noticed it was me.

"Oh, hello Dan," he said looking to my apron all workers wore, "I didn't know you worked here."

"Yeah, I've been here for a while. I've never seen you in here before either."

"I just needed to get out of the house and I've never been here so I thought 'why not?' and went in," he smiled and the and I returned the smile back.

"Can I get you anything?" I asked.

"Um, what's good?" He asked while he grabbed his backpack he had that was beside him and started rummaging through it.

"I don't really know, but a lot of people like the espressos," I answer.

"Okay, I'll try one of them," he said and before he could turn around I was gone.

My, so-called, 'shift' was way over and almost no one was in the café, one or two missing cups wouldn't hurt. If anything they could take it out of my pay, but I never drink anything here so it shouldn't be a big deal.

I made my way over to Phil's table with both of our drinks in hand.

"How much is it?" He asked as I set the drink in front of him.

"Nothing, it's free," I answer.

"No, let me pay!"

"Phil you're fine."

"No I'm not, won't you get in trouble?"

"No," I answered as I take my seat across from him

"Really?" He asked.

"Yeah," I answered, "so what's wrong?"

"Nothing," He answered looking down while stirring his drink.

"I can tell when something's wrong with someone, believe me," I say.

He kept his head down and said nothing. I didn't want to seem like a bother but the quietness was eating at me.

"So from what I understand you're in your last year of high school?" I start trying to change the subject. I could tell that the gladly appreciated it.

"Yeah, and you're a third year," He asked while looking up to meet my gaze.

"Yep, kill me," I answered.

He smiled and chuckled, "I know what you mean, and trust me it can only get worse from here. Unless you find the right people."

I felt flustered and I knew it was because of his smile. It was different, warmer almost. I loved it. I knew I was getting ahead of myself.

"Hey Dan, oh who's this?" One of my co-workers walked over to the booth we were sitting at.

"Just a friend," I answered taking a sip of my drink, trying to avoid eye contact with her, looking to Phil instead. His face was slightly flushed and he quickly moved his eyes to the girl talking.

"Well, he must be very important to you if he makes you smile and talk." She said then turned her attention to Phil. "Hello, I'm Louise."

"Phil, nice to meet you," He answered, sticking his hand out to shake Louise's.

Before their hands could touch we all jumped to a voice yelling, "Louise".

We all turned towards the door and we all saw the hideous beast, Maggie.

"Oh, coming!" Louise looked back to us, "I have to go. Nice to meet you Phil, and Dan you should smile more," and before I could process what she said she was gone.

My eyes stayed glued to the door.

"I didn't think I would see her so soon," he laughed nervously.

"Yeah, me either, I answered looking back down to my drink.

Phil's phone buzzed beside him, he looked down and frowned.

"I have to go," he said as he grabbed his bag and stood up with his drink in his hand and his phone in the other, "It was nice talking to you Dan, even if it was short. Oh, and I will pay you back for this."

He shook the espresso before drinking it.

I laughed a little, "I told you it's okay, I promise."

"I'll pay you back one way or another," he said before winking and turning to the doors. He said, "Bye Dan," as he started walking and waved before leaving.

"Bye," I whispered back and watched him leave.

We should have talked more, that's when it hit me. I hadn't talked to PhiltheAmazing today. I pulled out my phone and walked out the door while opening Kik.

DanShouldbeonFire: Hey

I heard the Kik beep and looked up to see Phil not too far away look down to his phone and smile.

It was him.

It had to be.

So I realize that I have to rewrite literally everything that I had written out for what comes next in the story because it doesn't really help the story. Great. I'm gonna try to get as many chapters out a week I can, probably once a week but, hey, it's more than I have usually been doing. It'll probably be up on Sundays or Wednesdays, depending on soccer practice and the amount of time band takes up. Thanks bye!

Me from the future:
Yeah, I lied...
