xliv. birth
"Hey," Jacob called out as he saw Kiara pulling her socks back on outside the house. She had already greeted Seth and Leah who were back patrolling the area after they successfully had distracted Sam's pack, but her brother had gone in to tell the others that they'd been able to get Emmett, Bree, Carlisle and Esme across the river without any hitches. "You're back."
"Thankfully," Kiara joked, nudging him lightly as she got up from pulling her shoes back on. They walked side by side towards the house, Kiara faintly being able to hear Rosalie's laugher from inside. She paused in her step slightly, their previous argument ringing in her ears.
Jacob paused too, sensing that his twin wasn't quite holding herself together with everything that was happening. Heck, none of them really were but he knew that everything would change for her after the birth. A selfish part of him knew that killing the baby would only hurt her more, but he felt like the risk of it killing their family would be worth that. He knew that Kiara agreed - but he wished it didn't have to be that way.
"You good?" Jacob asked, his hand pausing on the door as he waited for a response from her.
"Yeah, I guess" Kiara replied, shrugging her shoulders.
She wasn't. But she had no way of telling Jacob that. It wasn't that she didn't trust him, it was that she couldn't trust him with her feelings. She wasn't sure what he would do if she confessed to him that she didn't want to kill the baby, and she wasn't sure that he would react well if she told him she was having second opinions on the entire situation.
"I'll see you inside," Kiara replied, Jacob simply nodding slowly and moving back towards the house without a second thought. He knew something was bothering her, but if she didn't want to tell him then he wasn't going to force her to do so.
"Yup," Jacob said with a half-smile, pushing the door open behind him and heading towards the sound of Bella's laughter.
Kiara waited outside for a moment, taking in the cold night air and letting it freeze her bones cold. A small scoff from the trees took her attention away, noticing the way that Leah was staring at her from the distance. She could see the silent question in the eyes of the wolf, the care for her best friend never having changed slightly once she'd became her alpha.
"I'm fine, Leah," Kiara replied, although they both didn't believe it. They stared at each other for a moment longer before the wolf let out a low grumble, turning with a shake of her head as she bounded back into the trees.
Kiara shook her own head the interaction, taking a deep breath before she pushed through the door and into the chaos that was the Cullen house. It hit her all at once, the melodic pitch of Rosalie's laughter, Beverly's shrieks of amusement and the laughs of the rest of the vampires and Bella upstairs. She could faintly here Jacob entering the room, missing the pleasantries as she ascended the stairs towards the lounge.
"Why don't you tell Jacob what you've decided?" Rosalie said, a small smile on her face as she looked lovingly at Bella. The image almost turned Kiara's stomach a little - having wanted this for a while but not like this. Rosalie's eyes flickered to where Kiara entered the room, surprise on her face for a split second as she noticed her mate. "And Kiara."
"What now?" Jacob said, feeling Kiara come and stand beside him. He leant against her slightly, feeling the heat from her body against his bare arm. Edward looked between the twins, sensing that they weren't quite as aligned as he had previously thought.
Kiara felt a little bit sick at the way Rosalie and Alice were literally holding Bella up, seeing her friend being unable to stand by herself wasn't on her list of things she needed nor wanted to see today. She'd already been told by Seth that Bella had called Charlie and told him that she was going to a facility in Switzerland, so Kiara had no doubt in her mind that Bella had convinced herself that she was going to die for this baby.
"Rose is trying to talk Bella out of her baby names," Edward replied, smiling a little as he looked at his wife. He tried to avoid meeting Kiara's piercing gaze, her thoughts crushing into his head with a violence that only she possessed. He knew that she was angry about Bella's choice, but they all had to just adapt now. It was too late to do anything else.
Rosalie rolled her eyes playfully, causing Beverly to chuckle at the understatement of the century. Rosalie was almost begging Bella to not go with her baby names, wishing she chose something a bit more... normal instead.
"She hates them."
"Well, then I'm on your side no matter what you picked," Jacob replied, turning to look at Kiara for support. "Kie will be too, right Kie?"
"Ehm, we'll see," Kiara said, half-joking, half serious. She was trying to put on a strong front, but she'd be lying if she said that this entire thing wasn't boiling her up inside. How could the rest of them just be laughing about the baby when Bella was literally on death's door? How was any of this right?
"They're not that bad," Bella argued, pausing before turning to look at the twins. "If it's a boy, EJ. Edward Jacob."
Jacob smirked a little, Edward chuckling too. Kiara blinked - then blinked again. Was it not her that had literally been bitten by a vampire - twice - because of Bella yet Jacob was getting an entire baby partially named after him? Noted.
Edward bit back a laugh, Kiara tilting her head to fire him a look. She went to say something, but found herself left a little speechless as she finally had a look at him and noticed how dark his eyes had gotten. She knew that she'd done well to get Carlisle, Esme, Emmett and Bree away for a hunt, but it wasn't until then that she wished they'd done it sooner so more of them could have gone.
She'd never seen any of their golden eyes as black, including Rosalie, and the thought scared her a little. She knew that the shapeshifters blood wasn't as appealing to vampires, but at what point of thirst would Seth and Leah and Jacob start smelling like a snack?
"Okay, fine, that one's not awful," Rosalie said, Kiara's thought snapping back to the conversation at hand. Edward felt his mood dampen a little as he continued to look towards Kiara, wondering why it had taken him this long to see she was barely functioning. He'd been so focused with Bella and their unborn child that he hadn't really taken a moment to check in with the newly-crowned alpha. "Why don't you tell him the girl's name?"
"I was playing around with our moms' names. Renée and Esme. And I was thinking..."
Kiara just knew it was going to be something stupid.
"Renesmee."
There it was.
"Renesmee..." Jacob murmured, testing it out on his lips. He didn't even ask Kiara to help hide the slight dislike of the name, seeing the apparent unamusement on her face. His twin hated the name, Rosalie hated the name, Beverly clearly disliked the name... Jacob wasn't sure where he stood either.
"Too weird?"
"No, that's not too weird," Edward interrupted, stepping in when Jacob had no words to give Bella. It's beautiful. And it's unique, which certainly fits the situation. I like Renesmee."
At least someone does, Kiara thought.
"He likes it," Bella whispered to Rosalie, who looked at the others while rolling her eyes. Kiara wasn't sure if Bella was referring to Edward or the baby, but she didn't give it much thought once she noticed the styrofoam cup in Bella's hands. The girl made a small noise of discomfort as she turned around, beginning to walk out of the room so that she didn't need to see the human drink blood.
Just as her foot hit the ground in the opposite direction, her senses were immediately overwhelmed. Bones cracking, blood spilling and fast movements caused her to spin around, seeing the styrofoam cup spilling onto the white carpet and Bella in an unnatural position on the ground.
Kiara froze, not sure what to do as Beverly looked up at the girl, noticing how she had gone as pale as a sheet as she stared at the five others that were on the ground surrounding Bella.
"She's in labour."
____
Kiara stood in the corner of the room as everyone worked, her body almost frozen in a state of shock as Bella lay on the operating table. Beverly had grabbed Jasper within seconds of the vampire entering the room, having smelt the fresh blood and almost going straight into a frenzy at the sight of it. She'd wrestled him away, excusing herself as she found herself also looking at the puddle for a moment too long.
The rest of them had rushed upstairs into Carlisle's office, Alice's grip tight on Kiara's forearm as she dragged the stunned alpha with them. She went to get her to phone Carlisle, but she noticed the look on her face and instantly knew she was going to be of no help at the moment, before shoving her into the corner and calling Carlisle on her own phone. Had Kiara not been in shock, she'd have told Alice that she didn't even have a phone to call anyone with - sure that it was lying somewhere in the Black household from days prior.
"Rosalie, pass the morphine."
Kiara felt like their voices were underwater, her eyes fixated on Bella's face as her childhood friend screamed out in agony, her bones cracking with every movement. Rosalie, Edward and Jacob were rushing around her, injecting her with morphine and trying to do whatever they could to help, but Kiara could see from across the room that nothing was going to work.
"Carlisle said the placenta must have detached."
She felt like she was drowning, her eyes almost going blurry as she looked at the girl that lay on the table, her stomach growing smaller with the movements. She didn't know what was happening, what was going wrong - what was going right. She just knew that her friend was in the most pain she'd ever been in while everyone was standing around her not being able to help.
"We'll have to do it."
"Rose! Let the morphine spread."
"There's no time. He's dying."
"Get him out now!"
The scalpel sliced through Bella's stomach, blood seeping out of the wound and on to the table as Bella continued to scream and writhe in pain. Kiara didn't really register any of it, still too busy staring at Bella with heavy breaths as she tried to understand what was going on around her.
"You need to snap out of this," Alice snapped in her face, Kiara's eyes flickering back to the small vampire that was shouting at her with urgency. It was like a bucket of water had been dumped over her, her eyes finally focusing on her. "I can't be here, but if it gets too much for Rosalie - or Edward - you NEED to get them out of here."
Rosalie. Kiara's heart skipped a beat at the thought of the blonde having human blood on her lips. It was the one thing that Kiara knew Rosalie had been proudest of - every having tasted the metallic of human blood on her vampiric lips. Her self-control was probably even higher than Carlisle's, but Rosalie hadn't fed. Kiara might have wanted nothing to do with her the past few days - but she'd never let Rosalie do that to herself.
The alpha nodded, her breathing calming down as Alice disappeared from the room, her body poised as she moved a little closer to the centre. The smell of blood was overwhelming even her now, churning her insides as she noticed the blood that coated the three working on Bella.
Her eyes flickered to Rosalie, just at the same time as the blonde lifted the scalpel into the air as the blood trickled down her arm. Her eyes were the darkest black that Kiara had ever seen, a look in them that she hoped she'd never have to see again in her entire life. Edward's eyes widened as he looked at his adoptive sister, instantly hearing the frenzy in her mind as the animalistic side of her took over and the urge to feed grew.
"ROSALIE! NO!"
The alpha lunged before the words had even left Edward's lips, not thinking about her actions at all as she slammed into Rosalie, sending both of them flying across the office floor. The scalpel was in Rosalie's hand, coming closer and closer to Kiara's shoulder until it plunged straight into her flesh - only to be knocked out of the blonde's hand as a deep groan left the shapeshifter's lips.
Kiara's mind wasn't on her own wound as she struggled and kicked the vampire off her, her arms wrapping around Rosalie as her blood dripped onto the floor, the smell of it slowly reaching the blonde's nostrils as it mixed with Bella's continuous blood spillage. Jacob turned around, looking ready to jump into the scrap as his inner wolf howled out for his twin and his alpha, but she shook his head, simply grabbing Rosalie tighter and dragging her out of the room.
She shoved Rosalie hard, causing the two to tumble down the flight of stairs they had climbed only moments ago, crashing into the glass side table at the bottom with a thud. Kiara groaned a little, barely having a moment to register what had happened before Rosalie - still in a frenzy - launched back towards her, pulling her up from the table in the process.
The blonde vampire was instantly on her, her body slamming into the barely-standing alpha as she pushed her against the nearest wall. Kiara couldn't move her arms, her wrists pinned to the wall by Rosalie's hands as the vampire's chest moved up and down in anger as she snarled in her face. Kiara shut her eyes for a brief second, feeling bad about having to fight back but knowing that she needed to snap Rosalie out of it. She reared her head back before slamming it forward, head-butting Rosalie in the face with all of her strength and causing the blonde to release her grasp on the girl.
Kiara took the advantage, moving forward and pressing Rosalie against the opposite wall, seeing no recognition in her black eyes as she continued to thrash against her mate. She needed to remind Rosalie who she was and who she certainly wasn't going to become. Kiara knew if she even tasted a single drop of Bella's blood, Rosalie would never get over it and Kiara would never forgive herself.
So she did the only thing that came to her in the moment, no matter how stupid it seemed.
"Don't kill me," she muttered, taking a deep breath and just praying that something worked out for her for once.
Kiara leaned forward, closing the gap between them and sealed their lips together in a kiss. The youngest Black wolf felt the surprise form within Rosalie, the vampire momentarily stopping her struggling as she processed what was happening. The blonde felt the shock run through her before the emotion was pushed back, the overwhelming sensation of everything causing her to push Kiara back as she stared at her with deep breaths.
The smell of blood from upstairs was still prominent, but Kiara could see that Rosalie was now holding her breath, her eyes holding the sorrow of her actions that she had just committed during her lapse in strength.
"Rosalie," she started, knowing that whatever she said was only going to get her upset, but she had to try. "This wasn't your fault."
Rosalie's eyes trailed to the bruises on Kiara's arms, noticing the blood on her shoulder from the scalpel wound that she had caused. She felt sick to her stomach at the thought of having hurt Kiara, her cold heart snapping in two as she realised that the bruises resembled hand prints - her hand prints.
"You know nothing," Rosalie spat, her eyes still black as she shot Kiara one of the deadliest looks she could muster while grappling with the guilt that was building in her. She felt fury grow inside her as she looked at Kiara, looked at the way she was looking at her with pity while she stood there, bleeding on the white carpet because of Rosalie. "Don't you see what I am, Kiara? I'm a fucking monster."
"Rose -"
Kiara's heart felt like it was going to break. It was like some part of Rosalie had died in that room upstairs and she had no idea of how to fix it.
"Don't call me that! Not after... I could have killed you, Kiara," Rosalie growled, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the girl before her. "The last thing you would have ever seen is a monster."
The shapeshifter shook her head, taking a step closer to the blonde. She was aware an argument wasn't exactly helpful at this point in time, but she also knew that if Rosalie's attention was on her and not on what was happening upstairs, then that was at least somewhat helpful to everyone else. Truth be told, Kiara also didn't want to think about her best friend dying and giving birth to a demon baby.
"Then I would have died knowing that I'm with the person I love," Kiara returned, her voice remaining as determined as her expression did.
Rosalie's eyes widened at the words, her heart beating in her chest as she looked at Kiara. It had been the first time Kiara had said it with that tone of voice since she'd found out about Bella's pregnancy. Sure, she'd told her she loved her when they argued - but that wasn't the same. She could see it in Kiara's eyes, just like all the other times she had told her that she loved her.
They stared at each other for what felt like hours, neither wanting to be the first to blink or move as both of them felt everything they had ever felt for the other come bubbling to the surface. The blonde could see the resolve in Kiara's eyes, she could see how much Kiara was willing to fight for what they had, even after everything that had happened. Kiara might have wanted to kill the baby, but it didn't matter now. She knew that now.
Just as Rosalie went to say something else, a babies cry broke through the air.
"EJ," Kiara breathed, hearing Edward shout for Jacob to take the baby from him, but her brother refuse. She twitched, almost going to move towards the stairs but knowing that as soon as she saw Bella again she would freeze, the image being permanently scarred into her mind.
Within a second, Rosalie was gone. Kiara blinked, dread filling her for a split second as the vampire rushed back into the room, worried that she had caught another scent and entered a second frenzy. She didn't have to worry for long, hearing Rosalie's gentle voice as she appeared back at the top of the stairs, a small bundle cradled in her arms, cooing gently as she walked down the stairs towards Kiara.
She stopped in front of her, moving the blanket from the top of the baby's head to reveal a tiny head with a few wisps of brown hair on the top. The baby cooed back, almost sounding delighted as it looked back at Rosalie with a giggle falling from its lips. Kiara was frozen in her spot, her eyes never leaving the baby as Rosalie chucked lightly at the noise.
"Renesmee," Rosalie whispered, her eyes wide as if she was holding the most precious thing in the universe. "Meet your Aunt Kie."
Kiara swallowed, flinching at the sound of the newborn. The sound was so loud, so clear that it nearly hurt her eardrums. Her eyes flickered to Rosalie, seeing the blonde just staring at the baby with wide eyes, every emotion she could ever feel written across her face as she looked at the small bundle. Kiara looked back down at the baby, as if seeing her for the first time - a little girl... Edward and Bella's little girl.
"I won't kill you. That'd be too easy. You deserve to live with this."
Kiara tilted her head as she heard Jacob storm out from upstairs, going straight outside as Bella's heart finally gave out. A little girl, that had just killed her childhood friend and broken her brother's heart.
Without a single second of hesitation, Kiara turned and threw up into the trashcan.
_____
"She didn't make it," Seth said, watching as Jacob fell to the ground in tears outside the house. Leah stood beside him, a look of sorrow written into her face as she felt her heart break for her pack brother.
Jared, hiding on the outskirts of the trees behind them, raised his snout at the confirmation that the wolves had been waiting for. He slowly backed up, heckles raised as he lowly snarled, his feet hammering into the ground as he pressed towards the reservation. He knew the others were waiting for the signal, knowing that Sam and Paul were on their way to the Black household as he rushed to meet them there.
Billy Black rolled outside, his voice loud as he continued his argument with Sam on the driveway. Sue stood beside him, having came straight over as soon as Paul had text her that they needed to discuss their next moves against the Cullens - knowing that now included her children too. She hadn't expected Sam to tell them both that they were launching an attack - and if Kiara, Seth, Leah and Jacob were collateral damage, then so be it.
"I don't care what they've done," Billy snapped, fury running through his body as he looked at Sam. The alpha stared back at him, an apologetic look on his face but determination in his eyes. "They're still my children. They're still Quileute!"
"I'm sorry, Billy," Sam replied, his voice breaking for just a second before he turned back to the man with a stone-faced expression. He ignored Rachel, who was crying as she pushed her father, her eyes trying to meet her imprint's while silently begging him not to do this. "I just thought you should know."
"Know what?" Rachel snapped, her eyes flicking between Billy and Sam. She loved Paul, but she loved her siblings too - this entire feud was driving her insane.
"Bella's dead," Sam replied, his voice stern and with no emotion as Billy, Sue and Rachel felt their hearts drop in their chests. "It killed her. We need to go NOW!"
They watched as the pack turned, all preparing to shift as Jared waited on them at the tree line. Billy looked at the boys he had welcomed into his home over the past twenty years, the boys he had fed and told the tribe stories to and coached through the way of the wolf life. Now here they were, anger in their eyes as they rushed off to kill his daughter's imprint and potentially his children too.
"Paul, please," Rachel cried, the boy pausing in his step as he heard his imprint's whimpers from behind him. He tensed up, turning his head to look at her before his eyes flickered back to Sam's, watching him just as intensely. "Please don't do this."
"PAUL, LET'S GO!"
Rachel Black could only watch as Paul turned without another glance back at her. The love of her life was about to try and kill her baby siblings - and there was absolutely nothing she could do to stop it or help them in any way.
As soon as Sam and the pack disappeared into the trees, Paul shifted into a wolf and ran out into the forest, eager to be done with this. He could feel the resentment burning in his chest as he rushed to catch up with the pack, not caring about the wolf that was running beside him.
It didn't matter that he was imprinted with Rachel or that he had cared for her deeply. It didn't matter that her siblings had left the pack for the Cullens. None of that mattered as he rushed through the forest, impatient to get back to human form so he could end this. All of this started the day that Bella Swan returned to Forks - intertwining her fate with Kiara and Jacob forevermore.
This ended with the Cullens dead, and Jacob and Kiara back where they belonged.
Once and for all.
