epilogue
Thank you all. Truly.
The morning sun painted the horizon in gentle hues of pink and gold, a new day breaking over the quiet forest. Kiara stood on the balcony, a cup of coffee warming her hands, watching as the first rays of light spilled over the treetops.
It felt surreal, this sense of calm, as if the storms that had once consumed their families were merely echoes of a distant past. She could finally breathe.
Kiara closed her eyes, listening to the faint whispers of the wilderness stirring to life. In a few hours, she would be surrounded by those who had been there through it all, faces familiar and comforting. They were a part of her now, woven into the fabric of her life; past, present and future. A very long, and hopefully joyous, future.
"Considering how long you've been standing here, staring into nothing, I'm surprised at how peaceful your thoughts are," Edward spoke softly, the balcony door latching shut behind him as he walked towards his friend.
Kiara snorted a little, turning to face him slightly with a gentle smile on her face.
"How many times do I have to ask you to stay out of my thoughts?"
Edward rolled his eyes at that, refusing to humour her with an answer. He rested his forearms against the balcony railing as he leaned beside her, allowing his golden eyes to skim across the tree line just like her. He and Bella had just came back from a hunt, some of the family still out there and others helping with the final touches of the day ahead.
"You know," Kiara mused, taking a sip of her coffee, "there was a time I thought I'd never see you standing next to me without wanting to rip your throat out."
Edward chuckled, a low, melodious sound.
"The feeling was mutual, I assure you."
"Dick."
They shared a knowing glance, years of animosity melting away in the warm morning light. Both of them laughed, their voices echoing across the trees.
"When is Jacob picking you up?" Edward asked, already knowing the answer but trying to subtlety hint to Kiara that she was looking rather unprepared for her brother's arrival. "I didn't see your dress ready..."
"Alice already dropped it off," Kiara reassured him, yawning as she stretched her limbs out. "Apparently she envisioned Jacob turning up on his bike, going through mud and causing the dress to be covered. Not sure why it wouldn't be in a bag but who would I be to argue with the mighty clairvoyant?"
The sound of laughter drifted up from below, breaking the moment of contemplation. Alice's small shout of protest mixed with Emmett's booming guffaw drifted up from downstairs, having obviously been listening in on Kiara's sarcastic response.
"We should probably head down," Edward said, straightening up. "Alice will have our heads if we're the reason the entire day falls behind even one second."
Kiara grinned, downing the last of her coffee. "Can't have that, can we? I've faced enough angry vampires to last a lifetime."
With a shared smirk, Kiara and Edward made their way back inside, descending the winding staircase that led to the Cullen's spacious living room. Kiara's eyes paused as they glossed over the graduation cap wall, smiling gently at the newest cap that had been added - one from her own graduation with Edward, Bella and Alice.
As they reached the bottom, a whirlwind of activity greeted them, centred around a frantic Alice who was simultaneously curling Esme's caramel locks and barking orders at Emmett.
"No, Emmett! You need to press the suit with longer strokes. You're going to create creases if you keep doing it like that!" Alice's tinkling voice carried a note of exasperation as she deftly maneuvered the curling iron around Esme's head. "I can't believe I didn't see this!"
Emmett stood by the ironing board, his massive frame comically hunched over the delicate task of pressing his suit. He looked up as Kiara and Edward entered, a mischievous glint in his golden eyes. Kiara wasn't sure what had happened to it - since Alice had their outfits all professionally pressed weeks prior, but she knew it had something to do with the giant vampire.
"Run while you still can, Kiara," he stage-whispered, his dimples deepening as he grinned. "She's gone mad with power!"
Before Kiara could even chuckle, Alice's hand shot out, smacking Emmett across the back of his head with vampire speed. The resounding thwack echoed through the room, causing Kiara to wince sympathetically.
"I heard that, you big oaf," Alice huffed, not missing a beat as she continued her ministrations on Esme's hair. "And if you don't focus on that suit, I'll make sure you're wearing a potato sack instead."
Esme's melodious laughter filled the air, her eyes twinkling with amusement as she watched the scene unfold in the mirror before her.
"Now, now, children," she chided gently, though her smile never wavered.
"You know, Alice," Kiara piped up, unable to resist joining in on the banter, "I'm pretty sure Emmett could pull off a potato sack. Might even be an improvement."
Emmett's booming laugh filled the room as he pointed triumphantly at Kiara.
"See? The wolf gets it!"
"That wolf is about to be your sister-in-law," Alice snapped and rolled her eyes dramatically, but Kiara could see the corners of her mouth twitching upwards. She turned to scowl at Kiara who was trying to hold back a smile. "Don't encourage him, Kiara. I swear, sometimes I think you're as bad as he is."
Before Alice could launch into another tirade, the unmistakable rumble of Bella's old truck cut through the morning air, it having been passed on to the Black siblings now that Bella had been gifted a new one. Kiara's eyes widened, a mix of relief and excitement washing over her face.
"Oh, thank fuck," she muttered under her breath, loud enough for the vampires to hear. Without missing a beat, Kiara darted towards the front door, her sneaker-covered feet barely touching the polished wooden floor. She called over her shoulder, her voice a blend of gratitude and mischief, "Thanks for everything, Alice! I'll see you all later!"
Alice's protests were lost in the whoosh of air as Kiara flung open the door, revealing the misty morning and Jacob's grinning face behind the wheel of the ancient truck.
"Jake!" she exclaimed, bounding down the porch steps two at a time. "You're my hero, you know that?"
Kiara yanked open the passenger door, wincing at the loud creak of rusted metal. She hoisted herself into the cab, the familiar scent of leather, motor oil, and pine filling her nostrils. It smelled like home, like La Push, like freedom.
"Go!" she urged, playfully slapping Jacob's arm. "Before Alice changes her mind and decides I need another three hours of prep time!"
Jacob didn't need to be told twice. He revved the engine, which roared to life with a thunderous growl that seemed to shake the entire forest. As they pulled away from the Cullen house, Kiara caught a glimpse of Alice in the rearview mirror, standing on the porch with her hands on her hips, a mixture of exasperation and fondness on her pixie-like face.
The truck lumbered down the winding driveway, ancient suspension creaking with every bump and dip in the road. Kiara leaned back in her seat, letting out a long, contented sigh as the dense greenery of the forest enveloped them.
"So," Jacob began, his eyes twinkling with mischief, "on a scale of one to 'I'm going to tear you limb from limb,' how stressed out do you think Alice is right now, knowing that she can't see half of what's about to happen with all of the pack around?"
Kiara snorted, running a hand through her messy black hair. She'd enlisted the help of Kim and Emily to do her hair, much to Alice's dismay.
"Please, I've faced scarier things than an angry Alice. Besides, she loves me too much to actually follow through on her threats... I think."
She settled back into her seat, taking in the sight of her brother. Jacob looked happier than she'd seen him in years, his russet skin glowing with health and joy. The shadows that had once haunted his eyes were long gone, replaced by a warmth that spoke of contentment and love.
Jacob glanced at his sister, his eyes softening with a mixture of pride and affection.
"You know, Ki," he began, his voice low and sincere, "I just wanted to say... I'm really proud of you."
"Don't tell me you're about to get all sappy on me too... first Edward, now you? I can't handle this."
Kiara turned to him, surprise etched across her features. She felt a warmth spread through her chest, a lump forming in her throat. She reached out, punching his arm lightly.
"I'm proud of you too, you know. You've come so far from the angsty teen wolf pining after Bella."
Jacob let out a bark of laughter. "God, don't remind me. What was I thinking?"
"You weren't," Kiara quipped, grinning. "But that's all in the past now. Look at us, all grown up and mature."
As they spoke, the truck rumbled into La Push, the familiar sights of their childhood home rolling past the windows. The ocean glimmered in the distance, a constant, comforting presence. Soon, they were pulling up to Emily and Sam's house, the small yard already bustling with activity.
The pack was out in full force, their tall frames darting back and forth as they carried flowers and what looked like enough food to feed a small army. The air was thick with the scent of Emily's famous muffins and the earthy aroma of the forest. As Jacob cut the engine, Sam emerged from the house, his face breaking into a warm smile at the sight of the twins.
"There you are," he called out, striding towards them as they clambered out of the truck. "We were starting to wonder if Alice had kidnapped you for last-minute alterations."
Kiara laughed, embracing Sam in a quick hug.
"Not for lack of trying," she joked. "How's everything going here?"
Sam's eyes crinkled with amusement.
"Organized chaos, as usual. But we're on schedule." He glanced at his watch, then back at the twins. "I'm actually heading out now to pick up Billy, Sue, and Charlie. Jake... think you can keep this lot in line while I'm gone?"
He jerked his thumb towards the pack, who were now engaged in what appeared to be an impromptu wrestling match over the last muffin. Paul was almost winning, but his eyes found hers and suddenly the match was forgotten about as he launched across the lawn towards her and wrapped his arms tightly around her.
Paul set her down but didn't release her. Instead, he grabbed her cheeks between his massive hands, squishing them playfully. His eyes sparkled with mischief as he cooed in an exaggerated baby voice.
"Aww, wook at the beautiful widdle bride! Who's gonna be all pwetty today? Is it you? Is it you?"
Kiara squirmed, trying to escape his grasp, but she was laughing too hard to put up much of a fight. Jacob and Seth were doubled over with laughter, their deep chuckles mixing with the snickers of the other pack members who had gathered to watch the spectacle. Kiara's face flushed red, trying not to break character but failing.
"What is wrong with you, you freak," Kiara laughed, shoving him away from her with little success. "I swear to God, Paul, I will end you."
"You love me," Paul retorted, still squishing her cheeks and making ridiculous faces at her.
"Paul Lahote! Leave that poor girl alone before you ruin her wedding day look!"
Emily descended the porch steps, shaking her head fondly at their antics. Her long black hair was already styled in elegant waves, and she wore a simple sundress that complemented her copper skin beautifully. The scars on her face did nothing to diminish her radiant smile.
"Kiara, honey," Emily said, reaching out to smooth down Kiara's windblown hair, "why don't you come inside? We should start getting you ready."
Kiara nodded, shooting Paul one last mock glare before following Emily into the house. The interior was a whirlwind of activity, with Kim and Rachel darting about, arms full of makeup bags and hair accessories. Leah was sitting on the couch, holding a mirror with one hand as she applied eyeliner with the other.
"There you are!" Kim exclaimed, rushing over to envelop Kiara in a warm hug. "We were starting to think you'd gotten cold feet!"
Kiara snorted, returning the embrace. "As if. You couldn't keep me away if you tried."
Rachel stepped forward, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she wrapped Kiara in a tight hug.
"Oh, I almost forgot to tell you," she said, her voice brimming with joy. "Rebecca's arrived! She should be getting a lift from Sam with Dad and the others. Her flight landed earlier than originally planned."
"Really? Oh, that's fantastic! I was worried she wouldn't make it." Kiara paused, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. "And thank goodness for the cloud cover today. Can you imagine trying to explain to Rebecca why my soon-to-be wife is sparkling like a disco ball?"
"Yeah, she managed to convince Solomon to make the trip too. They're both here," Rachel continued, her smile growing wider. "She's so excited to see you. And to meet Rosalie, of course."
As the laughter subsided, Kiara felt a wave of warmth wash over her. Here she was, surrounded by her family and friends, about to marry the love of her life. The journey to this moment had been long and filled with obstacles, but standing here now, she wouldn't change a thing.
Emily clapped her hands together, drawing everyone's attention. "Alright, ladies, as much as I'm enjoying this little comedy routine, we've got a bride to get ready. Kiara, why don't you go change into your dress while we set everything up?"
Kiara nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness flutter in her stomach. As she turned to head upstairs, Leah stood up from the couch, setting aside her makeup.
"I'll come help you," Leah offered, her usual tough exterior softening slightly.
The two women made their way up the narrow staircase, their footsteps creaking on the old wood. The upstairs hallway was bathed in soft, diffused light from the cloudy sky outside, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere. They entered the spare bedroom, where Kiara's dress hung from a hook on the closet door, its ivory fabric shimmering even in the muted light.
As Leah carefully unzipped the garment bag, Kiara couldn't help but ask, "Hey, have you heard from Kate? I know she was planning on helping Rosalie..."
"You're not really asking about Kate, are you? You're worried about Rosalie."
Kiara felt her cheeks flush, caught in her transparent attempt at nonchalance.
"Ki, I've known you since we were kids. You're about as subtle as a freight train," Leah chuckled, shaking her head. "Stop worrying. Rosalie's probably driving Alice insane with her own nerves right now."
Kiara smiled gratefully, stepping out of her comfortable clothes and into the delicate wedding dress. Leah didn't look away at her naked body - both girls long over the surprise of seeing each other bare since they'd first started shifting. The delicate fabric felt cool against her skin, the intricate lace patterns tickling her arms as Leah carefully pulled the zipper up.
"You know, Leah," Kiara said softly as her friend adjusted the dress, "I'm really lucky to have you by my side today. After everything we've been through... it means a lot."
Leah's hands stilled for a moment, and when she spoke, her voice was thick with emotion. "Yeah, well, someone's got to keep you in line, right?"
As Kiara turned to face the full-length mirror, she gasped softly. The dress was perfect, hugging her curves in all the right places before flowing out into a modest train. The sweetheart neckline was adorned with delicate beadwork that caught the light, and sheer lace sleeves added a touch of elegance.
"Oh, Ki," Leah breathed, her voice thick with emotion.
When Kiara turned back to her friend, she was surprised to see Leah's eyes glistening with unshed tears. Leah quickly blinked, trying to maintain her tough facade, but a single tear escaped, rolling down her cheek.
Kiara felt her own eyes well up in response. She reached out, grasping Leah's hand tightly. The two women stood there for a moment, locked in a silent understanding. Years of shared struggles, triumphs, and growth passed between them in that quiet exchange. No words were needed; their bond spoke volumes in the stillness of the room.
Leah squeezed Kiara's hand, a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She took a deep breath, composing herself, before gently tugging Kiara towards the door.
They made their way down the creaking stairs, Kiara's heart pounding with each step. The chatter from the living room grew louder as they descended, but it abruptly ceased as Kiara came into view. A collective gasp filled the air, followed by a hushed silence.
Rachel was the first to break the spell. She stepped forward, her eyes wide and glistening with tears. Her voice trembled as she spoke, barely above a whisper.
"Oh, Kiara... you look just like Mom."
The words hung in the air, heavy with emotion. Kiara felt her breath catch in her throat, a fresh wave of tears threatening to spill over. Emily let out a soft sob, quickly covering her mouth with her hand. Kim was openly weeping, clutching Rachel's arm for support. Even Leah, who had already seen Kiara in the dress, seemed overcome once again by the emotional weight of the moment.
Jacob appeared in the doorway, likely drawn by the sudden silence. His eyes widened as he took in the sight of his twin sister, and for a moment, he looked like that little boy who had lost his mother all those years ago.
"Ki," he breathed, his voice thick with emotion.
Kiara stood there, surrounded by the love and memories of her family, feeling both overwhelmed and completely at peace. The room was charged with a potent mix of joy, nostalgia, and anticipation. In that moment, she could almost feel her mother's presence, wrapping around her like a warm embrace.
Taking a deep breath, Kiara smiled through her tears. "Well," she said, her voice wavering slightly, "I guess this means I picked the right dress, huh?"
A ripple of laughter broke through the room, releasing some of the emotional tension.
"Dad's going to lose it when he sees you," he said softly, his voice rough with unshed tears.
Jacob crossed the room in two long strides, enveloping his sister in a fierce hug.
"Mom would be so proud of you," he whispered in her ear. "So am I."
As Jacob stepped back, wiping discreetly at his eyes, Emily clapped her hands together.
"Alright, everyone," she said, her voice still a bit shaky. "We still need to actually do her hair, so let's save the tears for now, okay?"
Kiara felt her own eyes burning, overwhelmed by the love and support surrounding her. She took a shaky breath, trying to compose herself.
"Okay, okay," she said, forcing a watery laugh. "Let's do this."
____
Jacob had been right - Billy Black had tears streaming down his face as soon as his eyes had laid on to his youngest daughter. She had been standing with her back to him, the soft sea breeze blowing her hair back as she allowed Emily to take a few photos of her.
Sam had made sure that the others had found their seats before bringing Billy to see Kiara, the two men having made the agreement that it would be best for Sam to walk Kiara down the aisle. Kiara had insisted that Billy could do it, but the man had told her that he knew it was more special if Sam did it.
As Kiara turned, her eyes met her father's, and for a moment, the world stood still. Billy's weathered face crumpled with emotion, tears streaming freely down his cheeks. His hands gripped the armrests of his wheelchair tightly, as if anchoring himself to reality.
"Oh, Kiara," he breathed, his voice barely above a whisper. "You look... you look just like your mother."
Kiara felt her own eyes well up, a lump forming in her throat. She crossed the distance between them in a few steps, kneeling before her father's wheelchair. Billy reached out with trembling hands, cupping her face gently.
"I've never been prouder of you, honey," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "You've grown into such a strong, beautiful woman. Your mother would be so proud too."
Kiara leaned into her father's touch, feeling the warmth of his calloused hands against her cheeks. The scent of pine and tobacco that always clung to him wrapped around her like a comforting blanket, bringing back a flood of childhood memories.
Billy pulled her close, enveloping her in a tight hug. For a moment, they stayed like that, father and daughter locked in an embrace that spoke volumes of their shared journey, the trials they had overcome, and the love that had seen them through it all.
When they finally pulled apart, both wiping at their eyes, Kiara became aware of Sam standing a few feet away. His usually stoic face was a mask of awe and emotion. He stood there, mouth slightly agape, eyes wide as he took in the sight before him.
"Sam?" Kiara asked, a hint of amusement in her voice despite the emotional moment.
Sam blinked, seeming to shake himself out of his stupor. He cleared his throat, but when he spoke, his voice was still rough with emotion. He took a step closer, his eyes never leaving her face.
Despite the lack of bright sunshine, Kiara's dress shimmered with each movement in the La Push light, the delicate beadwork catching like tiny stars. Her long black hair, usually wild and untamed, was now styled in soft waves that framed her face perfectly.
"When I first met you," Sam continued, his voice growing stronger, "you were this scrappy little kid always trailing after Jacob, getting into all sorts of trouble. And now... now you're this incredible woman, about to start a new chapter of your life."
He paused, swallowing hard.
"I'm honored that you asked me to walk you down the aisle. You know I think of you as a little sister, and I couldn't be prouder if you were my own flesh and blood."
She reached out and squeezed his hand, unable to speak past the lump in her throat. Sam squeezed back, his eyes shining with unshed tears.
"Alright, alright," Billy chuckled, his own voice still thick with emotion. "If we keep this up, none of us will make it down the aisle without bawling."
"Okay," she said, her voice filled with determination and excitement. "I'm ready."
Sam offered his arm, and Kiara took it, feeling the strength and support of her pack leader, her friend, her brother in all but blood. Emily smiled warmly at them both, wheeling Billy as the two headed towards the beach ceremony.
With one last deep breath, Kiara allowed Sam to lead her towards the place where the ceremony was set to take place. The soft sand crunched beneath their feet as they made their way down the makeshift aisle, lined with wildflowers and driftwood.
As they rounded the corner, the full view of the ceremony site came into view. Rows of white chairs were set up on the sand, filled with a mix of pack members, Cullens, and other friends and family. At the end of the aisle stood an arch made of driftwood and adorned with white roses and local greenery.
Kiara had thought that Rosalie had wanted a big grandeur wedding, with church bells and extreme luxury. She couldn't have been more wrong - all Rosalie wanted was their friends and family there, and for it to be the wedding that they'd both dreamed of as little girls. For Rosalie, all that meant was someone who truly loved her without any hesitations.
Kiara's eyes swept over the gathered crowd, her heart swelling with emotion at the sight of so many loved ones. A few rows back, alongside some of the tribe elders, she saw Sue Clearwater, her eyes glistening with unshed tears as she clutched Charlie Swan's hand.
Next to them sat Rebecca and Solomon, who had flown in from Hawaii. Rebecca's face was a mirror of emotion, her free hand resting on her swollen belly as she watched her little sister walk down the aisle.
Kiara's gaze fell on Emmett, who was grinning from ear to ear. He gave her an exaggerated wink and a thumbs up, causing her to stifle a giggle. Beverly was absent from beside him - since she was Rosalie's Maid of Honour and was already standing by herself at the top of the aisle - but he didn't look out of place at all. Jasper and Alice were beside him, and Bella and Edward too.
Further down the aisle, she spotted Esme and Carlisle, their golden eyes filled with warmth and acceptance. Esme's hand was pressed to her heart, her face a picture of maternal pride. Carlisle nodded at Kiara, his smile radiating the same fatherly affection he showed all his children.
As they neared the front, Kiara's eyes found Jacob. Her twin brother sat tall and proud, his eyes shining with a mix of joy and nostalgia. Beside him, Renesmee bounced on her seat, barely containing her excitement. The young girl's copper curls bounced with each movement, and she waved enthusiastically at Kiara.
The pack were alongside Jake, all of the older boys trying to blink back tears as they looked at her. Those with imprints were snuggled up, with the exception of Emily who was now not only crying at Kiara but at Sam walking alongside her.
Seth Clearwater caught Kiara's eye as she passed, giving her a playful salute that made her heart swell with affection for her pack brother. Bree was wrapped in his arms, her eyes now a bright golden to match the rest of the Cullens and Denalis. Leah, who was sitting next to them and pressed against Kate's side, had a rare, genuine smile on her face, her usual tough exterior softened by the joy of the moment. Kate seemed at ease amongst the wolfs, her hand lightly resting on Leah's thigh as she grinned at the pack leader.
As they reached the end of the aisle, Kiara's eyes finally landed on Paul and Beverly. Her best man stood tall and proud. For once, his usual smirk was replaced by a genuine smile, his eyes suspiciously bright. Beverly was grinning widely, and Kiara made a note to ask Rosalie later about venom tears - since it seemed she had some pouring down her face.
Sam squeezed her arm gently as they reached the end of the aisle. He turned to her, his eyes filled with pride and love.
"You ready?" he whispered.
Kiara nodded, her heart pounding with anticipation.
As everyone settled, the officiant - the same guy that married Bella and Edward - directed their attention back down the aisle. A hush fell over the gathering as all eyes turned expectantly towards the path leading to the beach.
And then, like a vision stepping out of a dream, Rosalie appeared.
Kiara's breath caught in her throat as she laid eyes on her soon-to-be wife. Rosalie was a vision in a sleek, form-fitting white dress that seemed to shimmer like moonlight on water. Her golden hair was styled in an elegant updo, with a few loose curls framing her perfect face.
Carlisle walked beside her, his face a picture of fatherly pride as he escorted his daughter down the aisle. Rosalie's eyes, usually a striking gold, seemed to shimmer with an inner light as they locked onto Kiara's. Her red lips curved into a smile that was equal parts joy and nervousness, an expression so human and vulnerable that it made Kiara's heart ache with love.
It felt like she was imprinting all over again.
As their eyes met, the rest of the world seemed to fade away. Rosalie's face lit up with a smile so radiant it rivaled the sun, her golden eyes shining with love and adoration. In that moment, Kiara knew with absolute certainty that this was where she was meant to be.
As they made their way down the aisle, the soft lapping of waves against the shore provided a soothing backdrop to the moment. The overcast sky cast a soft, diffused light over the scene, making Rosalie's skin glow with an ethereal radiance rather than the telltale sparkle of her vampire nature.
Emmett, from his seat in the front row, let out a low whistle of appreciation, earning him a playful smack from Esme and a roll of the eyes from Rosalie. But Kiara could see the way Rosalie's smile widened at her brother's antics, the familiar banter grounding her in the moment.
Esme's hands were clasped tightly to her chest, her eyes brimming with tears that would never fall. Alice was practically vibrating with excitement, her tiny frame barely containing her joy as she clutched Jasper's arm. Jasper himself seemed overwhelmed by the waves of love and happiness emanating from everyone present, his usually stoic face softened into a gentle smile.
As they neared the front, Kiara could see the emotions playing across Rosalie's face. There was joy, of course, but also a hint of disbelief, as if she couldn't quite believe this moment was real. For a vampire who had lived through decades believing she was damned, unworthy of love, this day must have seemed impossible.
Carlisle gently placed Rosalie's hand in Kiara's, and for a moment, the two women simply stood there, lost in each other's eyes. Kiara could feel the coolness of Rosalie's skin against her own warmth, a contrast that had once seemed insurmountable but now felt like the most natural thing in the world.
"You look beautiful," Kiara whispered.
"So do you," she murmured, her voice filled with awe. "I can't believe this is real."
The officiant cleared his throat softly, drawing their attention. As he began to speak, Kiara found herself lost in Rosalie's eyes, barely registering the words being said. She thought back to their journey - from bitter enemies to reluctant allies, to friends, and finally, to this moment.
"Friends and family, we are gathered here today to witness the union of Rosalie Hale and Kiara Black. Two souls from different worlds, brought together by a love that knows no boundaries..."
Rosalie's thumb traced gentle circles on the back of Kiara's hand, a soothing gesture that spoke volumes. In that touch was a promise - of support, of acceptance, of a future filled with love and laughter.
"Rosalie and Kiara have chosen to write their own vows," the officiant announced. "Rosalie, if you'd like to begin."
Rosalie took a deep breath, her golden eyes never leaving Kiara's. When she spoke, her voice was filled with emotion.
"Kiara Black, you came into my life like a storm - wild, unpredictable, and completely upending everything I thought I knew. You challenged me, frustrated me, and ultimately, you changed me. You saw past the ice queen exterior, past the pain and bitterness I'd carried with me, for what seemed like an eternity. You saw me."
Rosalie paused, her voice wavering slightly.
"You accepted every part of me - the good, the bad, and the downright petty. You made me laugh when I thought I'd forgotten how. You showed me that even in this frozen existence, I could still grow, still change, still love."
Tears welled up in Kiara's eyes as Rosalie continued.
"I promise to love you fiercely and without reservation. I promise to stand by your side through whatever life throws at us. I promise to be your partner, your lover, your best friend. I promise to cherish every moment we have together, knowing that each day with you is a gift I never thought I'd have. I love you, Kiara, more than I ever thought possible."
As Rosalie finished, Kiara had to take a moment to compose herself, blinking back tears. She could hear sniffles from the audience, and even Paul seemed to be discretely wiping at his eyes.
"Kiara," the officiant prompted gently. "Your vows."
Kiara took a deep breath, her hands trembling slightly in Rosalie's cool grasp.
"Rosalie Hale, when I first met you, I thought you were the most infuriating, stubborn, beautiful woman I'd ever encountered. And you know what? I was right. But what I didn't know then was that you would become my everything. You pushed me to be better, to grow, to face my fears. You stood by me through the darkest times and celebrated with me in the brightest moments. You've seen me at my worst - covered in mud, angry at the world, and probably smelling like wet dog - and somehow, you still love me."
Kiara smiled as the crowd laughed at the wet dog joke - some either deeply understanding it, or others who were blissfully unaware but just finding it funny.
"I promise to love you unconditionally, through every mood swing and every bad hair day - though let's be honest, you don't really have those. I promise to be your partner in all things, to support your dreams and stand with you against any challenge. I promise to make you laugh, even on the days when you think you can't. I promise to be your safe haven, your home, your family."
Tears were flowing freely down Kiara's cheeks now, but she kept her eyes locked on Rosalie's.
"I promise to love you for eternity, Rosalie Hale. Not because I have to, but because I choose to, every single day. You are my soulmate, my best friend, my love. I am yours, and only yours. And I can't wait to spend forever with you."
As Kiara finished, she could hear muffled sobs from the audience.
The officiant cleared his throat, clearly affected by the emotional exchange.
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you wife and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Rosalie didn't hesitate. She pulled Kiara close, one hand cupping her cheek as their lips met in a kiss that was both tender and passionate. The world around them faded away, and for a moment, it was just the two of them, surrounded by the love they shared.
As they broke apart, the beach erupted in cheers and applause. Emmett's booming whoop could be heard above it all, followed by Alice's tinkling laughter. Paul was whistling loudly, while Jacob and the pack yelled out in their approval.
This was it - the start of their little slice of forever.
Kiara could get used to that.
____
They'd spent the first year of married life travelling. It had been a two month honeymoon that they'd kept extending, too consumed with their love for each other now that there were no deeply horrific impending threats.
Kiara had left the pack in the hands of Sam and her brother, still merged as one larger pack. She knew that it would have to change soon since Renesmee was now looking like she was ten years old, rather than two - something that really did still unnerve Kiara.
Her and Rosalie had gone pretty much around the world - they'd skiied in the alps (although Kiara hadn't been that good at it), swam in the pacific, hiked in the rainforests... there wasn't much they hadn't tried during their year alone.
As their plane touched down in Seattle, Kiara felt a mix of excitement and nostalgia wash over her. After a year of globetrotting with Rosalie, they were finally returning home. She glanced at her wife, marveling at how Rosalie's beauty still took her breath away, even after all this time.
"We could extend another month?" Rosalie asked with a smirk, her golden eyes twinkling with amusement.
Kiara groaned playfully. "Alice is going to kill us for extending our trip so many times, isn't she?"
"Probably," Rosalie chuckled, intertwining her fingers with Kiara's. "But it was worth it."
The drive from Seattle to Forks was filled with comfortable silence, broken only by the occasional comment about a familiar landmark or a memory from their travels. As they neared the Cullen house, Kiara felt a flutter of nervousness in her stomach.
"Do you think much has changed?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"With our families? I'm sure everything and nothing has changed all at once."
When they finally pulled up to the house, Kiara's jaw dropped. Alice hadn't just decorated - she'd transformed the entire front yard into a welcome home extravaganza. Banners, balloons, and fairy lights adorned every available surface.
Alice came bounding out, her pixie-like frame vibrating with excitement.
"Finally!" she exclaimed, yanking open Kiara's door and pulling her into a tight hug. "Do you have any idea how frustrating it is to plan a welcome home party when the guests of honor keep changing their arrival date?"
Kiara laughed, returning the hug. "Sorry, Alice. We got a bit carried away."
"A bit?" Emmett's booming voice carried from the porch. "You two were supposed to be gone for two months, not a year!"
As the rest of the Cullens emerged to greet them, Kiara felt a wave of warmth wash over her. This was her family now, as much as the pack was. The thought no longer felt strange or conflicting; it simply was.
Speaking of the pack...
Seth was the first to greet her outside, his wolf side instantly recognising that their alpha had returned. Sam and Jake might have been in charge for the past year, but it was always temporary - everyone knew and respected that.
"Ki!" Seth exclaimed, scooping her up in a bear hug that lifted her off her feet. "Man, it's good to have you back!"
Kiara laughed, returning the hug with equal enthusiasm. As Seth set her down, she noticed Bree hovering nearby, a shy smile on her face. The young vampire's eyes were now a warm gold, a testament to her commitment to the Cullen lifestyle.
"Bree," Kiara greeted warmly, pulling the girl into a gentler hug. "You look great. How have you been?"
Bree's smile widened. "Really good. Seth's been... amazing." She glanced at the young wolf, her eyes full of adoration.
Before Kiara could respond, she was engulfed in another hug, this time by her twin brother. Jacob's familiar scent washed over her, bringing with it a flood of memories.
"Welcome home, sis," Jake murmured, his voice thick with emotion.
As they pulled apart, Kiara noticed the changes in her brother. He seemed more settled, more at peace. His eyes flickered to where Renesmee stood with Bella and Edward, and Kiara was struck by how much the half-vampire child had grown in just a year.
"She looks..." Kiara trailed off, unsure how to describe the rapid aging of her niece.
"Like a pre-teen," Edward finished with a chuckle. "Yeah, it's been... interesting."
Rosalie appeared at Kiara's side, her cool hand slipping into her wife's warm one as she looked at Jacob.
"I hope you've been taking good care of my niece, mutt," she teased, but there was no real bite to her words.
Jake rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "As if you'd let me do anything else, Blondie."
Kiara marvelled at the easy banter between her wife and her brother. Two years ago, such an exchange would have been unthinkable. Now, it felt natural, a testament to how far they'd all come.
One by one, the rest of the pack emerged from the Cullen household, their faces a mix of joy and relief at seeing their alpha return.
It had been something that had changed almost instantly after she and Rosalie had gotten married - the changing of the treaty. Most of the clauses were abolished, with there being little to no reason to not allow the Cullens and wolves on each other's land when they were all doing that anyway since half of them were now linked.
The only rule that had really remained was that there was to be no killing or turning of humans - but everyone knew that there was no intention of that happening.
As the greetings continued, Kiara felt Rosalie's cool hand slip into hers. She looked up to see her wife smiling softly at her, understanding in her golden eyes. Rosalie knew how much the pack meant to Kiara, just as Kiara understood Rosalie's bond with the Cullens.
"So," Sam's voice cut through the chatter as he approached, Emily by his side. "Are you two finally done with your extended honeymoon, or should we expect you to disappear again next week?"
Kiara laughed, pulling her basically-brother into a hug.
"No more disappearing acts, I promise."
A babble from Emily's arms drew her attention away. Kiara grinned widely, her lips almost hurting from how large her smile was as she cooed towards the bundle in Emily's arms. The baby cooed softly, waving a chubby fist in the air. Kiara felt her heart melt at the sight.
"Oh my goodness," she breathed, stepping closer. "Look at this little angel!"
Emily beamed with pride, gently adjusting the blanket to give Kiara a better view. The baby girl had Sam's dark eyes and Emily's delicate features, a perfect blend of her parents.
"Would you like to hold her?" Emily offered, already moving to pass the infant to Kiara.
Kiara nodded eagerly, carefully cradling the baby in her arms. The little one looked up at her with wide, curious eyes, seemingly studying this new face.
"Oh, Emily, Sam... she's beautiful," Kiara whispered, reaching out to gently stroke the baby's cheek. The baby gurgled in response, her tiny hand wrapping around Kiara's finger with surprising strength.
Rosalie appeared at her side, her golden eyes soft as she gazed at the baby in her wife's arms. Little Uley seemed fascinated by Rosalie's blonde hair, her tiny hand reaching out to grasp at the golden strands.
"She's got good taste," Kiara chuckled, leaning into Rosalie's cool touch.
Sam cleared his throat, drawing Kiara's attention. His face was a mix of emotions - pride, joy, and a hint of nervousness.
"Kiara, Rosalie, this is Sarah," Sam breathed, noticing how Kiara's eyes lit up at the name - the name that honoured the woman that had brought her into this world. Her mother. But Sam wasn't finished yet - he had something else to say. "Sarah, this is your Auntie Kiara and Auntie Rosalie... your godmothers."
Kiara's jaw dropped, her eyes darting between Sam, Emily, and the baby in her arms. Rosalie's expression was a mirror image, her cold hand wrapped around little Sarah Uley's fingers that had been tugging at her hair.
They both felt their breath catch in their throats, overwhelmed by the trust and love implicit in Sam and Emily's decision. Tears welled up in Kiara's eyes as she looked down at little Sarah.
"Sam, Emily... are you sure?" Kiara asked, her voice thick with emotion. "I mean, we're honored, but..."
Emily stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on Kiara's arm.
"We're sure," she said firmly. "You two are family. There's no one else we'd rather have watching over our daughter."
Rosalie, usually so composed, seemed at a loss for words. Her golden eyes were fixed on Sarah, a mix of awe and longing in her gaze. Kiara knew how much this meant to her wife - to be trusted with a child, to be seen as nurturing and maternal despite her vampire nature.
"Thank you," Rosalie finally managed, her voice barely above a whisper. "We... we won't let you down."
Emily and Sam had almost managed to give Rosalie the one thing she'd wanted more than anything - and Kiara couldn't imagine how life could get any more perfect than in this moment.
As the group moved towards the house, the chatter picking up once more, Kiara found herself hanging back with Rosalie. They stood there for a moment, Sarah still cradled in Kiara's arms, Rosalie's cool fingers intertwined with the baby's warm ones.
"You okay?" Kiara asked softly, noticing the faraway look in her wife's eyes. Rosalie nodded slowly, a small smile playing on her lips.
"Just... processing," she admitted. "Before I met you, I never would have imagined this. Being married to someone that loves me unconditionally, being not just civil but friendly with the pack, being named godmother to Sam and Emily's child... it's more than I ever dared to hope for."
Kiara leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to Rosalie's cheek.
"You deserve all of it, Rose. You deserve happiness and family and love."
Rosalie's smile widened, her golden eyes shining with emotion. "We both do," she said softly.
As they made their way into the house, greeted by the warmth and laughter of their extended family, Kiara felt a sense of rightness settle over her. This was home - not just the place, but the people. The Cullens, the pack, her brother, her wife... all of them coming together, bridging divides that once seemed insurmountable.
"I love you, by the way," Kiara muttered, a grin on her face.
"Oh really?"
"And I'll love you until the end of eternity," Kiara continued, quoiting herself from so many months before.
"And forevermore after that," Rosalie replied, pressing a soft kiss to her lips. Kiara barked with laughter, knowing that they were maybe the most ridiculously in-love people to have ever existed.
Hand in hand, they walked towards the house with Sarah still cradled in Rosalie's arms, ready to embrace whatever the future held. They had eternity ahead of them, and Kiara couldn't wait to spend every moment of it with Rosalie by her side.
And the rest was history.

I AM SOBBING!!!
This story has been such a rejuvenating journey for me. It's been a long three years, and my writing has drastically improved and changed and altered as we've taken this journey together, but I cannot be happier.
To all the readers: you have created such a welcoming and positive community in the comments, chapter after chapter. While I haven't always interacted with every comment, I can guarantee that I've read every single one - whether it's smiling as you react alongside me, or laughing when you've made fun of something I've typed... I would not change a single moment of it.
This story has seen me through some of the worst moments of my life, and I think writing Rosalie and Kiara helped me to escape sometimes. You guys, you made it so much more validating.
I'll continue to post over stories on here, but this... I think this will always be the closest to my heart. If any of them interest you, please bring the same love and energy that you've brought here to those stories.
If this is where our journey ends, I again want to thank you. You'll always be my favourites - for forevermore and an eternity after that.
Signing off Petrichor for one last time, with nothing in my heart but love,
Kacey.
PS. - what was your favourite moment?
