037. the volturi
WHEN LENA WOKE UP THAT MORNING, she felt comforted by the sight of the white on the ground. It took her back to early childhood, when she would play in the snow with her uncle and make snowmen and snow-wolves.
But then she was snapped back into reality by the distinct groan of Jacob Black from beside her. Turning her head away from the open flap of the tent, she looked at the sleeping bag across from her, where Jake was sleeping. The two of them were forced to share a tent - as the only werewolves of the group - but shared tense eye contact when they both noticed the snow sticking to the ground. She could hear commotion outside from the members of their group that didn't need sleep and were quick to exit the tent and join them.
They had camped up close to the field where they were planning on having their 'talk' - to ensure no witnesses or property damage on the Cullen's very nice house. When all Edward did was nod when they made eye contact, Lena fiddled with her necklace nervously and got out her phone to text the group-chat.
PACK LYFE
Today
LENA
come now
Then, her phone was off and back in the tent, and the group were gearing up to walk into battle.
Considering the history between Vampires and Shapeshifters - the back were told to stay back in the forest until their cue. So when Bella and Edward, along with everyone else, walked off to the middle of the field to meet the Volturi, Lena and the pack stayed behind - in form and ready to go.
Sam idled up next to her, "You ready?"
She huffed through her nose, "As I'll ever be."
When the Volturi did emerge from the woods, a chill seemed to run down the spine of everyone there. Their black and red robes did nothing but intimidate the group, even as Lena picked up Edward's mutter of, "Aro's looking for Alice."
The reminder that Alice and Jasper were still not present only scared her more, but she stood her ground and waited for her cue. When the group of hooded vampires were halfway across the snow, Sam nodded and howled to the rest of the pack - their cue to step out into the open clearing themselves. Lena was up front, and saw the Volturi physically pause at their presence, it gave her a sense of satisfaction as she walked up beside Edward, with Jacob next to Bella. They gave each other a nod, and Lena felt Edward's cold knuckles brush against her fur slightly in acknowledgment.
The Volturi removed their hoods and it was clear to Lena who the leaders were - even the teenagers stood off to the side had an air of authority that couldn't be beat. Carlisle stepped forward, and even though there was about half a mile between the two groups, he only needed to mutter his next words.
"Aro. Let us discuss things as we used to." His voice was soft, welcoming, "In a civilised manner."
"Fair words, Carlisle." Aro responded, "A little out of place given the battalion you've assembled against us."
Lena thought it was a bit hypocritical for him to say, since his group of Voldemorts was twice the size of their gathering, but didn't make a move.
"I can promise you, that was never my intent." Carlisle responded, "No laws have been broken."
"We see the child." Some blonde haired freak spoke up, "Do not treat us as fools."
Carlisle raised his voice to a shout, "She is not an immortal! These witnesses can attest to that. Or you can look, see the flush of human blood in her cheeks-"
"Artifice!" The blonde one butted in again. Lena wanted to chew this idiot's head off.
Aro raised a hand, "I will collect every facet of the truth. But from someone more central to the story. Edward. As the child clings to your newborn mate, I assume you are involved." He held an arm out, which confused Lena, but Edward, Bella and the rest of the clan seemed to understand what it meant.
Edward sent a soft look to his daughter, and shared a determined one with his wife. He stepped forward, and Lena was quick to follow along. As they walked side by side, she sent him a nod that he returned - no words or thoughts needed to be exchanged.
When they reached Aro - who looked uglier up close - the man was quick to take Edward's hand in his own. Lena kept a firm eye on them, and the blonde freak off to the right, whilst the exchange took place.
A moment passed, Aro dropped Edward's hand, and said, "I'd like to meet her."
Edward and Lena shared a look, the girl hesitant, but the man looked back at his family and nodded, and the group walked forward. Emmett and Jacob didn't hesitate to join as back up, and when they reached the group, the wolves took either side.
"Ah, young Bella." Aro mused, "Immortality becomes you."
And then, Aro let out the freakiest sound ever heard by any human being - or vampire, or wolf - in the entire world. Lena looked at him in astonishment as he pointed at Rey and giggled like a madman, "I hear her strange heart."
Rey stepped forward, and instead of taking Aro's hand like he expected her to, she put her own on the side of his face. Another moment passed, and Aro straightened up with wide eyes, "Magnifico. Half mortal. Half immortal. Conceived and carried by this newborn, whilst she was still human."
"Impossible." The greasy blonde added.
Aro turned to him quickly, "Do you think they fooled me, brother?"
Edward, Bella, Rey and Emmett were quick to return to the group. Jacob gave them a growl and a snap before walking off, and Lena did her own snarl at the blonde freak show before joining him. She heard him speak, "Bring the informer forward."
When she returned to the clan, she faced the Volturi once more, watching as a blonde woman was brought up to Aro by two guards, "Is that the child you saw?" He asked.
The woman, Irina, looked over at them, shaking her head, "I'm not sure."
"Jane." Wannabe Lucius Malfoy said, and the teenage girl stepped up.
Irina flinched, quickly defending herself, "She's changed! This child is bigger."
"Then your allegations were false."
"The Cullens are innocent." Irina admitted, "I take full responsibility for my mistake." She turned to her sisters, mouthing, "I'm sorry."
Then, without warning, a tall man stepped up, followed by two others, and gripped her arms and head firmly. The blonde one lit a flame, and Edward exclaimed, "Caius, no!"
But it was too late, Irina's limbs had been ripped from her body and even as her sisters ran forward with a shout of her name, Caius simply lowered the flame to her broken parts and lit her up without a blink. Her sisters were quick to run forward in her defence, and Bella lifted Rey onto Jake's back in preparation for what might occur.
The girls tore through each vampire who tried to stop them, until Edward turned to the Amazonian vampires and said, "Blind them."
The woman was quick to do so, and the sisters stopped in the hands of their captors as Edward talked them down from killing the Volturi, "Tanya, this is what they want. If you attack now, we all die."
Their blindness was lifted, and Tanya and Kate took deep breaths after stopping their movement. Edward took steps back towards his family, but before he could make it there, Jane whispered, "Pain."
He was quick to drop to his knees, groaning in agony. Lena stepped forward with a growl, but Emmet stopped her, "Wait."
Edward continued to thrash, but when Bella focused her shield on him, he stood without a care in the world, continuing his walk towards them. The shield spread over the entire group, and Lena could see Jane struggling to inflict pain on any one of them. She stepped forward, but was stopped by the boy beside her. The Volturi shared looks, and the wolves growled for good measure. The boy beside Jane let some black mist fall from his hands - which Lena had to admit looked pretty cool - but was stopped by Aro.
"Aro, you see there's no law broken here." Carlisle kept them on track, trying to avoid a fight.
"Agreed." Aro responded, "But does it then follow, that there is no danger? For the first time in our history, humans pose a threat to our kind. Their modern technology has given birth to weapons that could destroy us. Maintaining our secret has never been more imperative. In such perilous times, only the known is safe. Only the known is tolerable, and we know nothing of what this child will become. Can we live with such uncertainty? Spare ourselves a fight today, only to die tomorrow."
Lena could feel the group becoming uncertain, and Bella becoming angry. Something was bound to happen soon, but then footsteps from afar garnered their attention.
It was Alice - their saviour - stepping up to them through the woods and finally showing her face, Jasper by her side. They didn't stop at the group, continuing towards the Volturi with determined steps until two guards reached out and grabbed them by their shoulders. Lena growled, stepping up to them quickly but a look from Alice stopped her before she got too close.
"My dear, dear Alice were so glad to see you here after all."
"I have evidence the child won't be a risk to our kind." Alice said, holding out her hand, "Let me show you."
